Sustainability communication and the implementation of sustainability practices at the store level in the fast fashion-industry (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Introduction: Sustainability has become a central part of fashion companies’ strategies and communication. At the same time, the fast fashion-industry has been criticized for contradictions between sustainability goals and a business model based on high consumption and rapid production. Previous research shows that differences may arise between companies’ sustainability communication and how sustainability work is implemented in practice.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to examine how sustainability work is implemented at the store level within the fast fashion-industry and how this relates to companies’ sustainability communication. By examining the relationship between communication and practice, the study contributes to a greater understanding of the organizational tensions that may emerge when sustainability initiatives are implemented in practice.

Method: The study is based on a mixed methods approach with a qualitative emphasis. The empirical material was collected through six semi-structured interviews, 28 survey responses, and secondary data in the form of sustainability reports and corporate communication from H&M, Zara, Lindex, and Kappahl. The material was analyzed through thematic analysis and descriptive analysis.

Conclusion: The results show that sustainability work at the store level is mainly implemented through practical routines such as recycling and material handling, while broader sustainability goals are often perceived as difficult to translate into everyday store operations. The study also shows that sales targets are often prioritized over sustainability issues in daily practice. Several respondents experienced differences between companies’ sustainability communication and the practical sustainability work, indicating that greenwashing can also be understood as a result of organizational priorities and implementation difficulties.
