Abstract [sv]

Obemannade flygfarkoster, eller UAS (Unmanned Aerial System), används i allt större utsträckning i samhället. Men i takt med att systemen blir mer avancerade ställs också högre krav på den mjukvara som används för att interagera med dem. Dessa designutmaningar delas i viss utsträckning med bemannad flygfart, medan vissa är unika för UAS. Mot bakgrund av forskning inom flygpsykologi, multimodala användargränssnitt, och Multiple Resource Theory undersöker denna studie hur multimodal presentation påverkar UAS-operatörers arbetsbelastning och användarupplevelse. En användarstudie med 14 deltagare genomfördes, där varje deltagare fick utföra två flygpass var med unimodala (visuella) respektive multimodala (visuellt-auditiva) instruktioner. Deltagarnas upplevelse utvärderades sedan med enkäter för arbetsbelastning (NASA-RTLX) samt semistrukturerade intervjuer. Resultatet visade ingen signifikant effekt av multimodalitet på upplevd arbetsbelastning. I intervjuerna uppgav däremot 7 av 14 deltagare en positiv upplevelse av multimodalitet, medan bara 3 ställde sig negativa. Studien illustrerar hur kvalitativa och kvantitativa metoder kan ge olika perspektiv på användarupplevelse. Utifrån detta diskuteras användning av mixed-methods inom UX-forskning i relation till forskningsmetoder för människa-datorinteraktion inom flyget.

Abstract [en]

Unmanned aircraft, or UAS (Unmanned Aerial Systems), are getting increasingly common across society. As these systems become more advanced, however, higher demands are placed on the software used to interact with them. These design challenges are to some extent shared with manned aviation, while others are unique to UAS. Building on the literature in aviation psychology, multimodal user interfaces, and Multiple Resource Theory, this study investigates how multimodal presentation affects UAS operators’ workload and user experience. A user study with 14 participants was conducted, in which each participant completed two flight sessions using unimodal (visual) and multimodal (visualauditory) instructions respectively. Participants’ experiences were then evaluated using workload questionnaires (NASA-RTLX) and semi-structured interviews. The results showed no significant effect of multimodality on perceived workload. However, in the interviews, 7 out of 14 participants reported a positive experience of multimodality, while only 3 expressed a negative view. The study illustrates how qualitative and quantitative methods can provide different perspectives on user experience. Based on this, the use of mixed methods in UX research is discussed in relation to human–computer interaction research in the field of aviation.
