Women’s experiences of living with polycystic ovary syndrome : A qualitative study (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a complex chronic condition that affects women of reproductive age and may lead to reproductive, metabolic and psychosocial consequences. Previous research shows that women with PCOS often experience mental health problems, reduced quality of life, and shortcomings in treatment and support provided by the healthcare system.

Aim: The aim was to describe women’s experiences of living with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).

Method: A literature-based study with an integrative synthesis of qualitative research was conducted. A total of ten qualitative scientific articles were included and analyzed according to Friberg’s five-step model, in which similarities and differences were identified and compiled into themes.

Results: The results showed that PCOS affects women’s lives in several dimensions and were presented in three themes: Psychological and emotional difficulties, Not being taken seriously- insufficient support from healthcare providers and Increased financial costs and limitations in everyday life. Women experienced mental health problems, negative body image, and an impact on identity and fertility. Furthermore, shortcomings in healthcare were identified, such as delayed diagnosis, insufficient information, and inadequate treatment. PCOS also causes financial burdens and limitations in daily life and work life.

Conclusion: PCOS appears to be a complex condition affecting women’s physical, psychological, and social lives. The results show a need for a person-centred approach in nursing, where women’s individual experiences, needs, and life situations are taken into account.
