Abstract [sv]

Denna studie undersöker hur unga migranters ackulturationsprocess i Sverige påverkas av interaktioner på TikTok, med fokus på memes som verktyg för social interaktion och tillhörighet. Studien har en kvalitativ ansats och bygger på semistrukturerade intervjuer med tio unga migranter, vilka har analyserats genom tematisk analys. Studien utgår från social identitetsteori, ackulturationsteori och social inlärningsteori. Resultaten visar att unga migranter aktivt deltar i meme-baserade interaktioner genom att dela och reagera på innehåll, vilket bidrar till gemensamma referensramar och social gemenskap. Memes fungerar som ett kulturellt kapital som stärker tillhörighet, men kan även exkludera individer som saknar förståelse för dessa referenser. Samtidigt visar resultaten att TikTok-memes kan bidra till känslor av utanförskap i relation till det svenska samhället, särskilt när normer och kulturella referenser upplevs som svåra att identifiera sig med. Vidare spelar memes en central roll i konstruktionen av kulturell tillhörighet, där innehåll kopplat till ursprungskultur väcker både stolthet och hemlängtan, medan exponering för svensk kultur kan främja integration genom igenkänning. Studien visar även att digitala erfarenheter överförs till fysiska sammanhang och påverkar beteenden, relationer och känslor. TikTok-memes har en dubbel funktion genom att både möjliggöra inkludering och bidra till exkludering, vilket belyser deras betydelse i unga migranters ackulturationsprocess. 

Abstract [en]

This study examines how young migrants’ acculturation process in Sweden is influenced by interactions on TikTok, with a focus on memes as tools for social interaction and belonging. The study adopts a qualitative approach and is based on semi-structured interviews with ten young migrants, which have been analyzed using thematic analysis. The study is grounded in social identity theory, acculturation theory, and social learning theory. The findings show that young migrants actively engage in meme-based interactions by sharing and responding to content, contributing to the creation of shared frames of reference and social cohesion. Memes function as a form of cultural capital that can strengthen a sense of belonging, but may also exclude individuals who lack familiarity with these references. At the same time, the findings indicate that TikTok memes can contribute to feelings of exclusion in relation to Swedish society, particularly when prevailing norms and cultural references are perceived as difficult to identify with.Furthermore, memes play a central role in the construction of cultural belonging, where content related to the country of origin evokes both pride and homesickness, while exposure to Swedish culture can promote integration through recognition and familiarity. The study also demonstrates that digital experiences are transferred into offline contexts, influencing behaviors, relationships, and emotions. TikTok memes thus serve a dual function by both enabling inclusion and contributing to exclusion, highlighting their significance in young migrants’ acculturation processes.
