To report or refrain : Social inclusion and its impact on individuals’ willingness to report crime in urban and rural contexts: A quantitative vignette study (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The aim of the study was to analyze the correlation between perceived social inclusion and individuals’ willingness to report crime, as well as whether this correlation is moderated by a reported culture of silence and residential context. The study was based on a quantitative survey conducted among adults in Skaraborg, with a non-probability convenience sample of 107 participants. Respondents were recruited through contact with municipalities in Skaraborg, where four municipalities distributed the questionnaire through municipal staff and local community services. Additional recruitment was conducted through the authors’ social media channels and local Facebook groups. The data were analyzed using simple and multiple regression analyses, including tests of interaction effects.

The results showed a significant correlation between perceived social inclusion and individuals’ willingness to report crime. However, no clear moderating effects of a reported culture of silence or residential context were found. The conclusion was that the experience of social inclusion is related to individuals’ willingness to report crime, suggesting that individuals who experience higher levels of social inclusion are also more willing to report crime.

The practical value of the study lies in the fact that the results can be used as a basis for policy development in crime prevention work. Efforts should focus on multiple levels simultaneously to strengthen social inclusion, participation, and belonging, which may promote individuals’ feelings of safety and trust, and in turn increase the willingness to report crime.
