When life changes : Experiences of life after stroke in adults aged 18 to 64 – A literature-based study (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Stroke during working age entailed a profound life change affecting employment, family life, identity, and social participation. Despite this, limited knowledge existed regarding how individuals aged 18–64 experienced life after stroke, which could hinder the development of individualized and person-centered nursing care.

Aim: The aim was to describe how individuals aged 18–64 described their experiences of living with stroke.

Method: The study was conducted as a qualitative literature review in accordance with Friberg’s (2022) model. Data was collected in databases through systematic searches in the CINAHL and PubMed. A total of ten scientific articles were selected and analyzed using an inductive approach to identify themes in the participants’ experiences.

Findings: The results showed that suffering a stroke during one's working life entailed a comprehensive and long-term life transition. Three main themes were identified: a changed everyday life, roles and responsibilities in family and professional life, and the encounter with healthcare and the need for long-term support. Invisible symptoms, such as cognitive difficulties and fatigue, emerged as particularly burdensome.

Conclusion: Stroke between the ages of 18 and 64 affected identity, independence, and future outlook. Recovery was a long-term process requiring (alternativt: that required) more than medical treatment alone. To promote quality of life, coordinated, person-centered, and age-adapted nursing care with sustained support was essential.
