How migrated people with diabetes mellitus type 2 experience care in their new home countries (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Diabetes Mellitus Type 2 is globally an increasing public health problem. Migrations around the world due to various reasons, the migrating population faces major obstacles to getting quality informative and practical treatment for their finally hidden or newly diagnosed Diabetes Mellitus Type 2.

Purpose: To describe how migrants with type 2 diabetes mellitus experience healthcare in their new home country.

Method: A meta-synthesis based on 6 articles with a qualitative design.

Main results: Four themes emerge from the included articles: Economic difficulties and social isolation, Lack of knowledge about the disease Diabetes Mellitus type 2, Emotional stress before necessary lifestyle changes in connection with the disease and the cultural and religious factors as obstacles to lifestyle changes.

Conclusion: Economic difficulties and isolation experienced by migrated people, absence of sense of community with other population, contribute to the disease being overshadowed by other, in their view, more important problems. Low level of education, which most have from their countries of origin, leads them to resort to alternative treatment methods, which often lead to permanent damage to their health.
