When knowledge is lacking and symptoms are downplayed : Women’s interaction with healthcare during menopause (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Menopause marks the end of a woman's reproductive phase and may cause physical and psychological symptoms that affect quality of life. Women express a need for empathetic and supportive approach from healthcare professionals when they seek care for their complaints.

Aim: Explore women's experience of healthcare approach related to menopause in outpatient care.

Method: A quantitative survey with quality elements was conducted via Facebook during the summer of 2025. A total of 106 participants answered questions about healthcare encounters. Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics as well as qualitative content analysis.

Results: The study revealed the experience of low knowledge levels and lack of support from healthcare professionals regarding menopause. Older participants reported higher satisfaction with healthcare encounters than younger women, gynecological clinics were rated more positively than other outpatient settings. The qualitative analysis identified categories; lack of sensitivity and respect, insufficient knowledge, supportive and caring approach and the feeling of being dismissed or deprioritized.

Conclusion: Woman experienced inadequate knowledge and poor attitudes among healthcare professionals when seeking care for menopausal symptoms. The findings highlight the importance of empathic encounters and the need for increased competence in menopause healthcare.
