Self-care in a digital age – Patients’ management of digital tools in type 2 diabetes : A literature review (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: DT2 is caused by insulin resistance and impaired beta cell function, which lead to elevated blood glucose levels. Digital tools can improve self-care and communication between patients and caregivers, but there are challenges for certain patient groups, including elderly patients, individuals from low socioeconomic backgrounds and patients without digital experience. The role of nurses is crucial in improving the quality of life of DT2 patients.

Aim: To describe the significance of digital tools in relation to the disease in patients with type 2 diabetes.

Method: Quantitative and qualitative studies from 2015 to 2024 were included, focusing on health parameters and perceived quality of life. Articles were selected through systematic searches in PubMed, CINAHL, and SCOPUS.

Findings: Four themes are presented in the literature review: improved quality of life, enhanced psychosocial health, varied effects on glycemic control, and both limitations and opportunities associated with the use of digital tools. Digital interventions may have a positive impact on health parameters, such as lowering HbA1c levels, but primarily contribute to improved psychosocial well-being by reducing anxiety, increasing motivation, and enhancing the patient's sense of control.

Conclusion: Digital tools can improve quality of life in DT2 patients by increasing treatment adherence and reducing diabetes-related stress. For nurses, this means that digital tools can be integrated into care to strengthen self-care and create more person-centered care.
