It doesn’t happen to me – Young adults’ described experiences of living with Diabetes Mellitus type 2 : An integrated compilation inspired of meta-synthesis (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus is a progressive disease that has increased among young adults in recent years. This means a high risk of complications that can debut later in life. After the diagnosis, young adults experience emotional challenges that affect their existence and self-care behaviors, which in return can lead to life related difficulties. The nurse has a responsibility to motivate and teach individualized measures to meet the needs of young adults and promote their well-being.

Aim: To describe young adults’ experiences of living with type 2 Diabetes.

Method: An integrative review of qualitative research inspired by metasynthesis, based on twelve scientific articles.

Findings: Three themes with associated sub-themes emerged from the findings. The themes were Social barriers to lifestyle changes, Life in transition - living with the disease and The need for support and information in care planning.

Conclusion: Young adults may experience difficulties integrating DMT2 into their everyday lives. Lack of motivation and various stress factors can lead to poor self-care. Coping strategies became common among young adults to deal with different emotions. The nurse has an important role in creating conditions for better management of the disease through motivational conversations and education.
