Bakgrund: Diabetes mellitus typ 1 är en kronisk sjukdom som orsakar långvariga komplikationer och lidande för patienter. Lidandet kan vara både fysiskt och psykiskt och kräver stöd för att lindra dess påverkan. Sjuksköterskans roll är att ge personcentrerad vård, stöd och utbildning för att minska komplikationerna.

Syfte: Att beskriva patienters upplevelser av att vårdas vid diabetes mellitus typ 1.

Metod: Studien använder en kvalitativ metod för att få en djupare förståelse av patienters känslor och upplevelser. Data analyserades med en tematisk analys av självbiografier i sex steg.

Resultat: Resultatet presenteras med fyra huvudteman och tio subteman. Det framkom att patienter ofta känner oro och rädsla vid sjukdomsbesked, vilket försvårar informationens upptagande. Förnekelse och bristfällig information hindrar egenvård, medan brister i kompetens och empati skapar osäkerhet. Vårdorganisationens brister leder till frustration, men omtänksam vård ger trygghet och stärkt självkänsla.

Konklusion: Patienterna upplever ofta brist på kommunikation, kompetens och empati från vårdpersonalen, vilket påverkar deras egenvård och förtroende. Trots detta har god utbildning och effektiv kommunikation hjälpt många att hantera sjukdomen bättre.

Background: Diabetes mellitus type 1 is a chronic disease that causes long-term complications and suffering for patients. The suffering can be both physical and psychological and requires support to alleviate its impact. The nurse's role is to provide person-centered care, support and education to reduce complications.

Aim: To describe patients' experiences of being cared for in type 1 diabetes mellitus.

Method: The study uses a qualitative method to gain a deeper understanding of patients' feelings and experiences. Data were analyzed using a thematic analysis of autobiographies in six steps.

Findings: The results are presented with four main themes and ten subthemes. It emerged that patients often feel anxiety and fear when diagnosed, which makes it difficult to absorb the information. Denial and inadequate information prevents self-care, while deficiencies in competence and empathy create uncertainty. The shortcomings of the healthcare organization lead to frustration, but caring care provides security and strengthened self-esteem.

Conclusion: Patients often experience a lack of communication, competence and empathy from healthcare professionals, which affects their self-care and confidence. However, good education and effective communication have helped many cope better with the disease.
