Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Anastasia Kriachko Røren's thesis Documenting the Nation: How TV Documentaries Reflect and Shape Russian National Identity is a detailed study of how Russian TV documentaries reflect and shape national identity. The thesis explores how ideological influence is embedded in Russian documentary film. Through an analysis of over 300 documentary films, Kriachko Røren investigates how national identity is communicated to Russian-speakers and how documentaries, through their narratives, mirror the developments in Russia in times of political change.

Abstract [en]

This book is the result of trying to capture the disparate nature of dead media and to present it in yet another edited collection, but within a different casting form. Instead of issuing a call for contributions, we chose the approach of soliciting authors who we knew would bring different perspectives and ap- proachestoartisticpractices, mediasociologyand technological speculation. Coming from different traditions – art making and media studies – we deliberately sought to bring in perspectives that at first glance seemed out of step, or sometimes even in collision, with each other. Readers of the book will no doubt find this disparity frustrating, or even irritating, but hopefully also exciting and dynamic. Art and technology can intertwine in many different ways, and we wanted to highlight this nature.
