A QUERY-BASED PIPELINE FOR SEMANTIC VIDEO GAME REVIEW ANALYSIS: Integrating Vector Embeddings and LLMs for Automated Feedback Summarization2026Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Developing successful video games requires understanding target audiences through continuous feedback. Digital platforms like Steam contain massive repositories of user reviews containing crucial developer insights regarding bugs, gameplay mechanics, and overall player experience. However, when large volumes of reviews exist, manual analysis becomes unfeasible, causing critical feedback to be buried beneath consumer-focused sorting tags. To tackle this issue, this study presents a semi-automated feedback processing pipeline combining sentence segmentation, semantic vectorization in ChromaDB (all-MiniLM-L6-v2), and Large Language Model synthesis (Google Gemini) for better sentiment extraction and an easily digestible summary. Evaluated by 11 game developers across three established titles (Elden Ring, Hades, and Blue Prince), the framework accelerated review processing efficiency and provided reliable feedback summaries. Although the system provides limited technical insight for immediate bug fixing, it demonstrates practical utility of an automated feedback parsing tool for game user research.

Determining the hMPV nucleocapsid architecture and its interactions2026Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Human metapneumovirus (hMPV) is a single stranded negative sense RNA virus and is the third leading viral cause of acute lower respiratory tract infections globally. hMPV shows mild symptoms in adults but is associated with severe symptoms requiring hospitalisation in patients that fall within any of three risk groups: infants and children up to the age of 5, the elderly, and the immunocompromised. Studies have also shown that antibodies are present in the serum of 1/5 children tested and that the virus has been circulating since the late 1950s. Despite this, it remains under-studied, with no currently available vaccines, and multiple aspects of its viral life cycle, such as its replication mechanism, not yet completely understood. One key component of its replication machinery is its nucleocapsid: a huge oligomeric filament of nucleoproteins encasing its genomic RNA strand, a structure which has yet to be resolved in its helical assembly state. This study aimed to resolve the helical hMPV nucleocapsid structure by co-incubating truncated nucleoprotein together with the C-terminal domain of the phosphoprotein, a known binding partner for the viral replication machinery. Nucleocapsids were then purified and imaged with Cryogenic-Electron Microscopy. 3D reconstruction revealed a nucleocapsid architecture distinct from previously published nucleocapsid fragment and ring-like structures and was revealed to have a unique conformation to the nucleocapsid of closely related Respiratory Syncytial Virus. These structural data may provide a blueprint by which sites of vulnerability to therapeutic intervention could be explored, while further elucidating unknown features of hMPV replication.

Intern employer branding i privat sektor – en kvalitativ studie om organisationers arbetsätt för att behålla befintliga medarbetare2026Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 15 credits / 22,5 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Background: Amid a growing skills shortage, internal employer branding has become an increasingly central concept within organizations. Since the labor market is dynamic, employees today have more opportunities, which can result in high employee turnover and hiring costs. Despite this, current research has generally focused on efforts to attract potential employees, while there is limited research on how this affects the willingness of existing employees to remain in the organization. This study aims to fill this gap.

Purpose: The purpose of the study is to examine and develop a deeper understanding of how private companies engage in internal employer branding and how this contributes to employer retention within the organization.

Method: This study is based on a qualitative method using semi-structured interviews. A total of eight interviews were conducted, involving four private organizations. Two interviews per organization were carried out with a line manager and an HR manager in order to gain a complementary perspective on the organization’s approach. The material has been analyzed using thematic analysis.

Conclusion: This study shows that ongoing internal employer branding efforts strengthen organization’s ability to retain staff. Three key aspects have been identified: the first relates to relationship-building between employers and employees, the second to skills development and the third to benefits, activities, and value driven work. Skills development is highlighted as the most important factor, as it enhances employees abilities and knowledge, thereby reducing the need for external recruitment. As a result, these aspects contribute to greater job satisfaction, sense of belonging and employee retention.

När skolan inte fungerar: Erfarenheter av stöd och svårigheter vid problematisk skolfrånvaro2026Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Problematic school absenteeism is a complex phenomenon influenced by individual, social, and structural factors. The aim of this study is to deepen the understanding of which factors individuals with experience of problematic school absenteeism describe as contributing to the onset and development of their absence, as well as which factors they have perceived as significant for their well-being and life situation. The study is based on a hermeneutic approach, focusing on interpreting and understanding participants’ subjective experiences. Using a qualitative, inductive method, 10 semistructured interviews were conducted with individuals who have experienced problematic school absenteeism. The material was analyzed through thematic analysis inspired by Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA), an analytical method aimed at understanding how individuals experience and make sense of their lived experiences. The theoretical framework of the study adopts a salutogenic perspective based on Antonovsky’s theory of Sense of Coherence (SOC), further elaborated through concepts such as social support, normative expectations, self-efficacy, and social identification. The results of the study contribute to an increased understanding of how problematic school absenteeism arises and develops, as well as how supportive relationships and appropriate adaptations can contribute to an improved school situation and enhanced well-being.

Sequence-encoded DNA hybridization weights for molecular computing2026Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 30 credits / 45 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

DNA oligonucleotides can encode molecular interactions through sequence-dependent hybridization and may serve as components of biochemical computing. This thesis examined whether defined mismatch patterns could program distinguishable affinities in MT65 and provide candidate molecular weights for a future DNA-based single-layer perceptron. Gibbs free energy(ΔG) was the thermodynamic design parameter, and responses were examined by quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR), equilibrium prediction, temperature-resolved fluorescence, and urea polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. qPCR was optimized with the perfect-match pair. All 60 possible single-nucleotide substitutions in the 20-nt complementary region were screened with NUPACK and evaluated by qPCR Second Derivative Maximum (SDM). Nine variants containing one, three, or six mismatches were examined. A concentration of 100 nM and 40 cycles gave the most consistent qPCR fits. The predicted effect of a single mismatch depended on its position and base identity, but predicted ΔΔG and experimental ΔSDM were not significantly correlated (Pearson r = −0.215, p = 0.10, n = 59). The equilibrium sweep identified 66 °C as the temperature with the greatest predicted separation. Across the perfect match and nine multimismatch variants, the predicted change in target-duplex fraction from 95 to 66 °C strongly agreed with the experimental fluorescence change (Pearson r = 0.926; Spearman ρ = 0.927; bothp < 0.001; n = 10). Urea-PAGE showed the intended 60-nt product and an unintended product near 75 nt. The results support mismatch-programmed hybridization as a method for producing calibrated candidate molecular weights, but do not yet demonstrate a complete perceptron.

Neurodiversity and Empathy: A Comparative Examination - Investigating Cognitive and Affective Empathy in Autistic and Non-Autistic Adults2026Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 15 credits / 22,5 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Empathy is a core component of social cognition, commonly divided into cognitive empathy, involving perspective-taking and mental state inference, and affective empathy, referring to emotional resonance. In autism research, empathy has traditionally been conceptualized as globally impaired, although recent findings suggest a more complex and heterogeneous pattern. The present systematic review examines whether autistic and non-autistic adults differ in cognitive and affective empathy, and whether a consistent and theoretically meaningful pattern emerges across behavioral and neuroimaging studies. A systematic literature search was conducted in Medline (EBSCO) and Web of Science, yielding 431 records. Following screening and eligibility assessment in accordance with PRISMA guidelines, 29 studies were included in the final review. The findings indicate that cognitive empathy is most consistently affected, particularly in tasks requiring spontaneous mental state inference, where autistic adults show reduced automaticity and altered neural recruitment. In contrast, affective empathy demonstrates greater variability, with evidence of intact emotional responsiveness alongside condition-specific differences related to context, ambiguity, and embodied processing. Neuroimaging findings further suggest that differences are better understood in terms of altered functional organization across social brain networks, including key regions associated with mentalizing and affective processing (e.g., the temporoparietal junction, medial prefrontal cortex and anterior insula) rather than uniform deficits.Overall, the results support a differentiated and context-dependent model of empathy in autism, challenging deficit-based accounts. Instead, the evidence points toward a reconfiguration of empathy-related processes, shaped by methodological factors, task demands, and individual variability. These findings highlight the importance of adopting more nuanced and context-sensitive approaches to social cognition in autism.

GAMES USER RESEARCH IN PRACTICE: Small- and Micro-sized Game Developers’ Perspectives on Games User Research2026Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 15 credits / 22,5 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

While research on players and the responses of players to gameplay, often called games user research (or GUX), has increasingly attracted attention in later decades, few studies empirically look at how small game studios make use of research methods proposed by GUX-researchers. It has been theorized, both by UX-theorists generally, and by GUX researchers specifically, that practitioners’ usage of methods likely differs from researcher descriptions and models. This interview study thus set out to investigate how seven small game studios in western Sweden use GUX-methods, and what their reflections are on their experiences and current practices. The main takeaways are that the studios strongly favor qualitative analysis of remote observation of gameplay, through live or prerecorded material. Sampling from the studios’ online community was a very popular strategy. Feedback from playtesters was weighed against the feedback garnered from other game developers and industry experts, with the latter primarily used to inform the most important decision-making around the games.

HOW SPATIAL ARRANGEMENTS CONTRIBUTE TO PLAYERS’ UNDERSTANDING OF GAME RULES IN VIDEOGAMES: A Case Study of Dark Souls III2026Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 15 credits / 22,5 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study examines how spatial arrangements in video games contribute to players' understanding of game rules, using the Undead Settlement level in Dark Souls III (FromSoftware, 2016) as a case. Dark Souls III was selected for its minimal reliance on explicit player guidance, which foregrounds the role of spatial design. The study proceeds in two phases: a textual analysis of the level's spaces, examining their affordances and constraints, and playtesting sessions with four participants, who played through the level while thinking aloud and were interviewed afterwards. The two phases were compared. Several recurring spatial patterns were identified, along with the rule understanding participants formed around each. From these findings a process is described, in which spatial arrangement carries affordances and constraints that players perceive, which evoke a cognitive set and in turn an expectation of what is likely to occur.

DESIGNING AN AUGMENTED REALITY APPLICATION USING GAMIFICATION FOR ENGAGING TEENAGERS WITH RIGAS´ CHARTA IN A MUSEUM2022Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This work describes the design, construction and evaluation of an Augmented Reality prototype application with gamification aspects and the main purpose is for visitors to spend more time with Charta and gain knowledge of alternative and more playful methods. With the help of a smartphone or a tablet, teenagers can view and interact with Rigas´ Charta, a twelve sheets map measuring approximately 70x50 cm, with total dimensions of approximately 2x2.1 m. During the development of the interface, the lifecycle model for interaction design was used. This model encourages a user focus and has four different phases; Establish needs and requirements, (re) design, build an interactive version and evaluation. The prototype even though it is simple attracts the interest of the teenagers and demonstrates benefits and also supports user engagement.

DEN TEKNISKA UTVECKLINGENS PRÄGEL PÅ MILJÖBERÄTTANDE: En studie om utvecklingen av miljöberättande utifrån fem olika spel2026Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

WHEN FASHION BECOMES COMPETITION: Functional Fashion and Competitive Progression in a Female-Oriented Game2026Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Players may not enter a game for competition, yet competition can become embedded in how they play. Game 01 provides a distinctive case: a female-oriented game combining fashion and character development with intensive player-versus-player (PvP) play, in which costumes also contribute directly to combat performance. Drawing on autoethnography, eight semi-structured interviews, and a survey of 19 players, this study examines how such functional fashion shapes player engagement. Findings show that functional fashion connects fashion, collection, and character development to competitive progression, providing pathways through which players attracted by these forms of engagement can become deeply involved in PvP. Competitive participation therefore does not necessarily begin with competitive motivation, nor does it require a strong competitive identity. Functional fashion can thus bridge non-competitive forms of engagement and sustained competitive participation.

Tillit inom E-handel: En studie om hur användare prioriterar tillitsfaktorer vid olika typer av köp och kontexter2026Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

E-commerce can create uncertainty for users because they cannot physically evaluate the product or service. Instead, users must rely on the information presented by the e-commerce service. This study investigated the factors within e-commerce that contribute to increased trust and how these factors are influenced by context. Through interviews and a survey, the study examined how user perceptions are shaped by previous interactions with e-commerce services. The interviews provided a deeper understanding of user reasoning, while the survey offered a broader perspective on how trust factors are ranked. The results revealed that e-commerce design, information quality, past experiences, social proof, and security and data protection significantly influenced user trust in e-commerce; however, the importance of these factors varied depending on the context, type of purchase, and perceived risk. The findings indicate that clear information, secure payment options, familiarity, and credibility signals contribute to increased trust. The study demonstrates that trust should not be viewed as a single factor, but rather as a combination of various factors whose importance shifts according to the context. These results can enhance understanding among UX designers regarding how to design e-commerce services to boost user trust across different purchasing situations.

Implementation of a weakly structured system as a case of digital transformation – a study of an emergency response training organization2024In: Proceedings of the 57th Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences / [ed] Tung Bui, University of Hawai'i at Manoa , 2024, p. 6034-6043Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This long-term (10-year) exploratory case study investigates the implementation of a weakly structured IT system (WSS) in the Swedish agency responsible for safety education. Guided by the analytic lens of the Trifecta model of organizational regulation, we sought to examine the mutually shaping effects of novel IT, the practices, and the organizational rules, while maintaining a focus on the role of ‘ordinary employees’ – the trainers in charge of the education process. The case reveals which elements or actions or the lack of thereof aided or curbed the implementation process. The findings contribute to the ongoing discussion on the nature and meaning of the digital transformation (DT) process, illuminate distinctive features of WSS, and allow the formulation of conjectures on its implementation.

PUSSLENS FUNKTION I SILENT HILL F: ANALYS AV SYMBOLIK OCH TEMATIK2026Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Do Alpha Oscillations Predict Body Ownership Information's Access to Conscious Awareness?2026Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Body ownership depends on the integration of visual, tactile, and proprioceptive signals, but the neural mechanisms linking multisensory bodily integration to conscious awareness remain unclear. This preliminary EEG study examined whether posterior parietal alpha-band activity predicts temporal integration and perceptual awareness sensitivity during bodily self-perception. Seven participants completed a two-rubber-hand body ownership task and a matched synchronicity task while EEG was recorded. In each trial, participants made a two-alternative forced-choice judgement and rated the clarity of their perceptual experience. Behavioural analyses showed that Type-1 sensitivity increased with visuotactile asynchrony, indicating that the tasks captured sensitivity to temporal discrepancies between seen and felt touch. Temporal binding window estimates were narrower in the ownership task than in the synchronicity task. However, individual alpha frequency did not show the predicted negative association with temporal binding window width. Alpha peak power at individual alpha frequency was positively but non-significantly associated with meta-d′ in both tasks. These findings do not yet provide reliable evidence that alpha-band measures predict conscious awareness of body ownership information. Nevertheless, the study establishes a viable framework for linking psychophysical measures of body ownership, perceptual awareness ratings, and individualised EEG measures of alpha activity.

WHY DO PLAYERS FIDGET?: Exploring Non-Goal-Directed Behaviours in Digital Games2026Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Players often make repeated actions that do not help with the current game goal, such as jumping or rolling on an empty road. These inputs are normally treated as habit or noise. This thesis first explores why this kind of In-Game Fidgeting appears and how the start, stop, reduction or return of an action relates to local gameplay conditions, player-reported reasons and reported experience. It then examines whether repeated links between these behavioural changes, the players' explanations, experience ratings and nearby game events could make fidgeting a useful clue for developers when locating gameplay segments that may deserve closer review. Fourteen participants played the opening part of Neva for about 30 minutes. Their gameplay was observed across six target segments. All 14 participants rated Boredom, Attention, Perceived Control, Frustration and Threat/Anxiety for each segment, and 13 completed a follow-up interview about the marked actions. The analysis compared the behaviour record, the local game condition, the segment ratings and the players' explanations. Candidate fidgeting-like behaviour appeared in 42 of 84 participant-segment records. The clearest shared change happened in Segment 2. Six participants were already making repeated extra actions before a new scene appeared, and five of them stopped or reduced the actions at the scene change. Some started again later. Players associated the observed actions with low stimulation, keeping attention, control feedback, character visibility, possible threat, habit and feelings carried over from combat or failure. Similar actions therefore had different meanings, and no single reported reason or experience rating explained every case. That change is used here only as a cue for later review, not as a label for what the player felt.

GÖR VAD DU VILL, MEN INTE DET: En undersökning av agens och dess gränser i digitala spel2026Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Remote Virtual Simulation for Incident Commanders—Cognitive Aspects2021In: Applied Sciences, E-ISSN 2076-3417, Vol. 11, no 14, article id 6434Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Due to the COVID-19 restrictions, on-site Incident Commander (IC) practical training and examinations in Sweden were canceled as of March 2020. The graduation of one IC class was, however, conducted through Remote Virtual Simulation (RVS), the first such examination to our current knowledge. This paper presents the necessary enablers for setting up RVS and its influence on cognitive aspects of assessing practical competences. Data were gathered through observations, questionnaires, and interviews from students and instructors, using action-case research methodology. The results show the potential of RVS for supporting higher cognitive processes, such as recognition, comprehension, problem solving, decision making, and allowed students to demonstrate whether they had achieved the required learning objectives. Other reported benefits were the value of not gathering people (imposed by the pandemic), experiencing new, challenging incident scenarios, increased motivation for applying RVS based training both for students and instructors, and reduced traveling (corresponding to 15,400 km for a class). While further research is needed for defining how to integrate RVS in practical training and assessment for IC education and for increased generalizability, this research pinpoints current benefits and limitations, in relation to the cognitive aspects and in comparison, to previous examination formats.

Can Remote Virtual Simulation Improve Practice-Based Training?: Presence and Performance in Incident Commander Education2019In: Presence - Teleoperators and Virtual Environments, ISSN 1054-7460, E-ISSN 1531-3263, Vol. 28, p. 127-152Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

An incident commander (IC) is expected to take command in any incident to mitigate consequences for humans, property, and the environment. To prepare for this, practice-based training in realistic simulated situations is necessary. Usually this is conducted in live simulation (LS) at dedicated (physical) training grounds or in virtual simulation (VS) situations at training centers, where all participants are present at the same geographical space. COVID-19-induced restrictions on gathering of people motivated the development and use of remote virtual simulation (RVS) solutions. This article aims to provide an increased understanding of the implementation of RVS in the education of Fire Service ICs in Sweden. Data from observations, questionnaires, and interviews were collected during an RVS examination of two IC classes (43 participants) following an initial pilot study (8 participants). Experienced training values, presence, and performance were investigated. The results indicated that students experienced higher presence in RVS, compared with previous VS studies. This is likely due to the concentration of visual attention to the virtual environment and well-acted verbal counterplay. Although all three training methods (LS, VS, and RVS) are valuable, future research is needed to reveal their respective significant compromises, compared with real-life incidents.

    Abstract [en]

The emergence of immersive virtual reality (IVR) technologies has raised interest in the use of fire and rescue services (FRS) as a supplement to the established practice-based hot fire-live simulation (HF-LS) training. This is due to features such as time efficiency, portable technologies, and training in scenarios not possible in HF-LS. However, whether IVR provides realistic firefighter training situations has been called into question. Previous studies have revealed differences regarding perceived presence in, and attitudes toward IVR training between novice firefighters (who can only relate to HF-LS training) and experienced firefighters (who can relate to both HF-LS and real fires). In the present study, two groups of experienced full-time employed firefighters, 53 from Brazil and 18 from Sweden tested the same IVR technology. The hypothesis was that differences in national education and training programs and real fire experiences might influence experiences in IVR technology. This study examines the differences and similarities in experienced presence, opinions on whether the graphical representations and tasks performed convey realism, and attitudes toward the IVR-supported training format. Data were collected via systematic post-training presence questionnaires and observations. The results revealed a highly experienced presence and perceived realism of the representations by the participants from both countries. However, attitudes toward using IVR technologies differed. The motivation to utilize currently available IVR training tools was higher in Brazil than in Sweden. This may be partly explained by less frequent HF-LS training opportunities in Brazil. Nevertheless, further research is needed to investigate the training transfer of IVR technologies and how these can better support skills training.

Hierarchical configuration decisions in transfer line balancing: Operational, tactical, and strategic effects on cycle time2027In: International Journal of Production Economics, ISSN 0925-5273, E-ISSN 1873-7579, Vol. 303, article id 110186Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The Transfer Line Balancing Problem (TLBP) concerns the optimal assignment of tasks to workstations in automated machining lines to improve operational efficiency. This problem is particularly relevant to high-volume manufacturing industries, such as the automotive and aerospace industries, because it directly affects productivity and cost efficiency. This study examines how hierarchical configuration decisions at the operational (task assignment), tactical (joint task–tool assignment), and strategic (joint task–tool–fixture assignment) levels affect cycle time in an existing automotive machining transfer line. Three mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) models are developed to represent these configuration levels while accounting for setup times and industrial constraints, including task–machine accessibility, zoning, and technological restrictions. Because the exact models do not scale effectively to large instances, a constructive heuristic combined with a local search strategy is also developed. The proposed solution methods are evaluated using an industrial case study and 225 benchmark instances generated using a MILP-based benchmark generator. Across the benchmark size groups, operational cycle times are, on average, up to 11.87% and 12.65% higher than those obtained under tactical and strategic configurations, respectively, indicating potential productivity and economic benefits. The findings support managers in selecting an appropriate configuration level. Sensitivity analyses are also conducted to assess the effects of task–machine accessibility and task-time variability on solution performance.

Implementing Virtual Reality for Fire Evacuation Preparedness at Schools2025In: Computers, E-ISSN 2073-431X, Vol. 14, no 7, article id 286Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Emergency preparedness training in organizations frequently involves simple evacuation drills triggered by fire alarms, limiting the opportunities for broader skill development. Digital technologies, particularly virtual reality (VR), offer promising methods to enhance learning for handling incidents and evacuations. However, implementing VR-based training remains challenging due to unclear integration strategies within organizational practices and a lack of empirical evidence of VR’s effectiveness. This paper explores how VR-based training tools can be implemented in schools to enhance emergency preparedness among students, teachers, and staff. Following a design science research process, data were collected from a questionnaire-based study involving 12 participants and an exploratory study with 13 participants. The questionnaire-based study investigates initial attitudes and willingness to adopt VR training, while the exploratory study assesses the VR prototype’s usability, realism, and perceived effectiveness for emergency preparedness training. Despite a limited sample size and technical constraints of the early prototype, findings indicate strong student enthusiasm for gamified and immersive learning experiences. Teachers emphasized the need for technical and instructional support to regularly utilize VR training modules, while firefighters acknowledged the potential of VR tools, but also highlighted the critical importance of regular drills and professional validation. The relevance of the results of utilizing VR in this context is further discussed in terms of how it can be integrated into university curricula and aligned with other accessible digital preparedness tools.

Impact of Fire Suit Ensembles on Firefighter PAH Exposures as Assessed by Skin Deposition and Urinary Biomarkers2017In: Annals of Work Exposures and Health, ISSN 2398-7308, E-ISSN 2398-7316, Vol. 62, no 2, p. 221-231Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Over the past 10 years, a number of safety measures for reducing firefighters’ exposure to combustion particles have been introduced in Sweden. The most important measure was the reduction in the time firefighters wear suits and handle contaminated equipment after turn-outs involving smoke diving. This study was divided into two parts, those being to investigate the level of protection obtained by multiple garment layers and to assess exposure during a standardized smoke diving exercise. First, realistic work protection factors (WPFs) were calculated by comparing air concentrations of the full suite of gaseous and particle-bound polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) inside and outside structural ensembles, including jacket and thick base layer, during a tough fire extinguishing exercise using wood as the fuel. Second, during a standardized smoke diving exercise, exposure was assessed by measuring PAH skin deposition and levels of eight urinary PAH metabolites in 20 volunteer student firefighters before and after the exercise. The average WPF for the sum of 22 PAHs was 146 ± 33 suggesting a relatively high protective capacity but also indicating a substantial enrichment of contaminants with a risk of prolonged dermal exposure. Accordingly, in the second exercise, the median levels of skin-deposited Σ14-PAHs and urinary 1-hydroxypyrene significantly increased 5-fold (21 to 99 ng/wipe) and 8-fold (0.14 to 1.1 µmol mol−1 creatinine), respectively, post exposure. Among the PAH metabolites investigated, 1-hydroxypyrene proved to be the most useful indicator of exposure, with significantly elevated urinary levels at both 6 h and 20 h after the exercise and with the strongest correlation to dermal exposure. Metabolites from two-ring and three-ring PAHs were eliminated faster while levels of 3-hydroxy-benzo[a]pyrene did not meet the detection criteria. The results from correlation studies indicated that dermal uptake was a major route of exposure in accordance with previous findings. To summarize, this study shows that some of the newly adopted protective measures were correctly implemented, and should continue to be followed and be more widely adopted.

ESG-faktorer i kreditbedömningen av medelstora företag2026Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 15 credits / 22,5 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Background: The interest in integrating environmental, social and governance (ESG) fac-tors into financial decision-making processes has increased significantly and is today largely driven by economic incentives rather than solely ethical considerations. Previous research shows that ESG factors can contribute to reduced financial risk and thereby influence credit assessments. At the same time leading to medium sized enterprises is characterized by a high degree of information asymmetry as these firms often lack standardized ESG reporting. This creates a challenge for banks aiming to incorporate sustainability aspects into their risk assessment. Furthermore, research highlights the presence of a so called “firm size bias” where larger firms are favored in ESG rating due to greater resources for reporting which further complicates fair assessments of medium sized companies.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to increase the understanding of how credit analysts who actively work with sustainability identify, interpret and evaluate financially material ESG information in the credit assessment of medium sized enterprises. The study also aims to highlight how analysts manage the lack of standardized ESG data and which methods are used to integrate sustainability aspects into the credit assessment process.

Method: The study was conducted using a qualitative research method with semi struc-tured interviews as the primary data collection method. The respondents were selected through purposive sampling and consist of credit analysts within the banking sector with experience in assessing medium sized companies. The interviews were conducted digitally and analyzed using thematic analysis with a focus on identifying patterns in how ESG in-formation is handled in practice.

Conclusion: The findings show that standardized ESG data is often lacking for medium sized companies which leads credit analysts to rely heavily on soft information such as customer dialogue, local knowledge, and company visits. ESG information undergoes a process in which it is first identified then interpreted and finally evaluated based on its financial materiality. The study shows that ESG factors are primarily used to identify risks rather than opportunities and are not assessed in isolation but always in relation to a company's cash flow and industry context. Sustainability aspects rarely affect credit decisionsdirectly but they have a clear impact on risk assessment, lending conditions and interest rates. In conclusion ESG is integrated as part of the overall risk analysis where the professional judgement of the analyst plays a crucial role in situations of limited information.

Comparative analysis of convolutional neural networks for advanced glaucoma detection2026Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 30 credits / 45 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Glaucoma is an optic neuropathy characterised by irreparable damage in the form of gradual vision loss. As one of the leading causes of blindness worldwide, research into preventative healthcare such as accessible, early-stage screening mechanisms is rapidly growing in importance. Automated deep learning methods integrated with retinal fundus image datasets hold promise however balancing model capacity against calibration and resource constraints remains a major challenge within digital healthcare.

This study systematically evaluated trade-offs between diagnostic performance, structural complexity and clinical calibration across convolutional neural networks (CNNs) to identify optimal frameworks for mobile health glaucoma screening. Five distinct architectures- EfficientNet B0, EfficientNet-B7, Efficient-V2-M, VGG16, and ResNet50- were optimised across a hyperparameter grid search using the REFUGE2 dataset and results evaluated were based on the optimal configuration for each architecture.

Due to the dataset’s class imbalance (80% healthy), clinical viability was evaluated at the standard 0.5 decision boundary using F1 Score and classifier decision-boundary calibration was profiled using confidence strip plots. Continuous prediction probabilities from unseen test sets were extracted for each architecture to calculate Receiver Operator Characteristic (ROC) curves. Structural parameter weights were mapped against diagnostic performance to outline the experimental efficiency frontier.

The study revealed that while high-capacity networks like EfficientNet-B7 (~64M parameters) can achieve isolated, peak theoretical metrics (highest AUC=0.8556), they can fall short at the clinical decision boundary (F1 Score = 0.5674).

Conversely, the highly compact EfficientNet-B0 (~4M parameters), established a superior efficiency frontier and delivered a predictable, stable performance consisting of AUC=0.837, the highest overall F1 Score (0.643), and B0 yielded more polarised, confident predictions with a low False Positive Rate of ~5.3%. VGG16 and ResNet50 delivered poor performances despite increased parameter count compared to the lean, EfficientNet-B0 model with smeared predictions across the decision boundary, demonstrating higher diagnostic uncertainty.

This study demonstrates that architectural scale does not guarantee clinical reliability on finite and specialised, biological datasets. Out of the evaluated models, EfficientNet-B0 is established as the definitive choice for clinical translation into low-resource settings due to its compact parameter profile and highly confident calibration.

Workplace behavioral health in financial advisory work: An integrative narrative review of advisor well-being2026In: Journal of Workplace Behavioral Health, ISSN 1555-5240, E-ISSN 1555-5259, p. 1-36Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Client-facing financial advisory work is a workplace behavioral health issue because advisors routinely manage emotionally charged conversations about debt, insecurity, retirement, family strain, loss, and financial uncertainty while also meeting organizational, regulatory, and performance demands. This integrative narrative review synthesizes evidence on financial advisors and adjacent financial helping professionals, including financial counselors, debt advisors, bankers, financial coaches, and financial therapists. Drawing on financial planning, occupational health, communication, emotional labor, counseling, and helping-professions research, the review examines how client distress, case complexity, workload, compliance burden, role conflict, market uncertainty, and technological change shape advisor stress, burnout, emotional exhaustion, engagement, and job satisfaction. The review develops a workplace behavioral health framework for financial advisory work that links economic, regulatory, and technological conditions to proximal job demands, psychological mechanisms, well-being outcomes, and protective resources. The synthesis shows that advisor well-being is not only an individual resilience issue but also a work-system outcome shaped by autonomy, role clarity, workload design, peer support, supervision, referral pathways, technology fit, and organizational support. The review argues that sustainable financial advisory practice depends on workplace systems that reduce avoidable strain, support emotional and ethical decision-making, and protect the behavioral health of advisors who deliver client-centered financial guidance.

    Reconfigurable process-aware factory layout planning: a human-centric multi-objective optimization approach2026In: Engineering optimization (Print), ISSN 0305-215X, E-ISSN 1029-0273, p. 1-27Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Factory layout planning is central to manufacturing performance. By aligning productivity with worker well-being, factories can achieve more sustainable operations. Traditional approaches often treat the process sequence as static, limiting adaptability. This article introduces a human-centric approach that treats the process sequence as reconfigurable, enabling dynamic adjustment of resources and equipment across the assembly line. The approach integrates sequence generation with precedence constraints, block layout creation and resource positioning into a unified multi-objective optimization process. A genetic algorithm combined with digital human modelling evaluates proposals in terms of worker well-being, walking distance and area utilization, while ensuring compliance with work-environment regulations. Unlike previous studies, this method integrates reconfigurable sequencing with resource positioning into full assembly-line optimization, validated in an industrial testbed. The findings show how adaptable layouts improve performance and embed human factors and ergonomics into decision making, supporting Industry 5.0 principles of sustainable, human-centric manufacturing.

An LLM-powered Chatbot for Knowledge Management in Manufacturing Automation2026Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Knowledge is a key strategic resource for organizations, and an organization’s ability to successfully manage and transfer knowledge has a wide range of impacts on key performance indicators. This study looked at how Elektroautomatik, a small Swedish automation company could improve their knowledge management process through use of generative AI. Prior to this study employees at Elektroautomatik used a OneNote document (Kunskapsbank) to manage knowledge across various automation projects.

This study proposed solution in the form of an LLM-powered chatbot that utilized a Neo4J GraphRAG database built off the Kunskapsbank document. An iterative design and creation process was used to develop the chatbot first utilizing a RAG retrieval model, then a GraphRAG with a monolingual query function for the chatbot, and finally a bilingual query function that could search information in the GraphRAG in both English and Swedish. Developing the RAG and GraphRAG required specialized data generation and query handling processes as the Kunskapsbank document contained a mix of information in a mixed media format of text, images, and tables, and was written in both English and Swedish.

The chatbot was evaluated based on a set test questions and ground truths developed by Elektroautomatik using the RAGAS metrics context precision, context recall, semantic similarity, factual correctness, and faithfulness. The three methods, RAG, monolingual GraphRAG query, and bilingual GraphRAG query were all evaluated, and the bilingual GraphRAG query had the best performance overall. Through the development of this LLM-powered chatbot the study was able to demonstrate how generative AI could be used to develop a knowledge management system that could handle a mixed media and bilingual knowledge dataset.

Future studies should focus on improving performance of Swedish language queries, evaluating the system on a more robust set of test questions, and following up on user testing evaluation after completing a full application. Additionally, the LLM-powered chatbot knowledge management system developed in this thesis should be tested at other manufacturing automation companies to verify results.

Employer branding i rekryteringsprocessen: En kvalitativ studie om hur HR kommunicerar arbetsgivarvarumärke till kandidater2026Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 15 credits / 22,5 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Background: Employer branding has emerged as a necessary strategy in response to increasing competition for talent, requiring organizations to shift their focus from solely selecting candidates to actively attracting them. In this context, HR seeks to reduce the information asymmetry that develops when external candidates lack insight into the organization by communicating a clear Employer Value Proposition (EVP) that balances concrete benefits with cultural and symbolic values. The recruitment process represents a central arena for this signaling, where factors such as clarity and credibility affect whether candidates choose to proceed.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to increase the understanding of how HR communicates the organization's Employer Value Proposition (EVP) through signals in the recruitment process, and how the difference between a strategically formulated EVP and practical communication manifests throughout the recruitment process.

Method: To address the purpose of the study, a qualitative approach was adopted using semistructured interviews. This method was chosen to enable a deeper understanding of how HR professionals, in their role as signal senders, navigate and construct signals and the Employer Value Proposition (EVP) within the recruitment process.

Conclusion: All respondents describe employer branding as an important part of the recruitment process, even when the concept has not always been clearly defined within the organization. In several of the studied organizations, it appears that HR professionals work to communicate the organization's value proposition through clarity, credibility, consistency and engagement communication to candidates. The Employer Value Proposition (EVP) is expressed both through instrumental factors such as working conditions, flexibility and career development opportunities, as well as through more symbolic values such as culture, meaningfulness and societal contribution. At the same time, several respondents indicate that the Employer Value Proposition is not always used as a clearly defined or formal tool. Instead, EVP is in several cases communicated through practical actions, engagement and various touchpoints throughout the recruitment process. Overall, several respondents' descriptions suggest that realistic and well-founded communication can help strengthen candidates' confidence and organizations' attractiveness as employers.

Comparing performance between Pure-SQL and ORM libraries: Is there a performance difference between Pure-SQL and ORM libraries?2026Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

As the complexity of Pure-SQL queries continues to increase, the impact they have on the readability and maintainability of code also continues to increase. Object Relational Mapping (ORM) offers a means of abstracting the SQL queries, turning them into more easily handled objects. The main drawback of ORMs is the performance impact from the addition of an abstraction layer to transform ORM objects into SQL queries for interactions with a server. The study aims to measure the impact of two ORM libraries, Prisma and Sequelize, with Pure-SQL as a baseline using the metrics of response time and memory usage through a quasi-experiment.

The response time results show that while generally close, as expected Pure-SQL has the lowest response time across all query operations and is statistically different from both Prisma and Sequelize. Memory usage results also show that Pure-SQL is the most memory efficient and is also statistically different from Prisma and Sequelize.

Examining The Determinants of Customer Satisfaction in Retail Banking: A Qualitative Study ofRTK Bank in a Large City in Ghana2026Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study seeks to examine the determinants of customer satisfaction within a retail banking setting through qualitative inquiry among bank customers in the city. Unlike existing literature that uses SERVQUAL surveys and regression analysis, this study focuses on customers’ subjective interpretation of their interactions. The qualitative analysis utilized reflexive thematic analysis of twenty in-depth semi-structured interviews.

Results show that the determinants of customer satisfaction are service quality and branch experience, digital banking experience and infrastructure constraints, trust and relationship quality, and complaint management and service recovery. Moreover, age, occupation, personal income and socioeconomic status shape distinct pathways to building customer satisfaction. Infrastructure-constrained channel migration is a novel phenomenon that reveals customer experience and satisfaction determinants that emerge in the context of network outage-induced frustration from customers on the digital banking channel.

The study offers five recommendations to RTK Bank on how to improve service delivery, digital banking experience, customer relationship and trust, complaint management, and transparency on bank charges after the 2017–2019 banking crisis in Ghana.

Assessing DNA Extraction for Culture Independent Sepsis Diagnostics Using Genomic Nanopore Sequencing2026Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Sepsis is a severe and potentially life-threatening condition resulting from an uncontrolled immune response to infection. Rapid identification of pathogens is essential for enhancing clinical outcomes. While conventional blood culture diagnostics remain the gold standard in clinical practice, they are limited by lengthy turnaround times and decreased sensitivity in low-biomass infections. This study examined how the yield and purity of DNA extracted from human whole blood that has been spiked with bacteria or synthetic microbial DNA affect sequencing-based microbial detection using Oxford Nanopore MinION technology. Manual and semi-automated extraction workflows utilising the QIAamp DNA Mini Kit were assessed for bacterial cultures, and the Quick-DNA Miniprep kit was employed for samples spiked with blood. Subsequent taxonomic and antimicrobial resistance analyses were conducted using Kraken2, EPI2ME, and BV-BRC workflows. Semi-automated extraction has enhanced workflow efficiency and diminished operator-dependent variability compared to manual extraction methods. Gram-negative E. coli demonstrated higher DNA yields and more consistent purity than Gram-positive S. epidermidis, which can be attributed to differences in cell wall structure and lysis requirements. An updated statistical evaluation and outlier handling revealed variability across different sample types. Sequencing of blood spike-in samples facilitated taxonomic classification and the detection of antimicrobial resistance genes, including fosA, mph(K), blaZ, and several efflux-associated genes. However, samples with low bacterial biomass or a high background of host DNA exhibited reduced microbial read recovery and limited detection of AMR genes. Additionally, the presence of occasional low-level taxa, such as S. aureus, likely indicated contamination or misassignment of reads. The study emphasises that DNA extraction quality significantly affects the effectiveness of nanopore-based microbial detection. It highlights both the potential and challenges of rapid, culture-independent metagenomic diagnostics for bloodstream infections, stressing the need to optimise extraction methods to improve accuracy and reliability in clinical use.

Ökennivåer i spel: Vilken betydelse har instrumentering respektive skala för lyssnarens upplevelse och associationer till ökenmiljöer i spelmusik?2026Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Introduction: Digitalization has contributed to societal development and created opportunities to communicate and receive information more quickly. At the same pace, digital violence has become an increasingly common form of violence in close relationships. Women are a group that often suffers from digital violence in close relationships when their partner monitors, harasses, and controls them, as well as limits their personal space. Health consequences such as stress and anxiety are common results of digital violence, and they have an impact on women's everyday lives as well as their overall health. Aim: The purpose of the study was to investigate how adult women experience digital violence in close relationships and how this violence affects perceived stress, anxiety, everyday life, and well-being from a public health perspective. Method: The study is designed as a structured literature review. Through systematic searches in the databases Medline Ebsco and Web of Science, 20 original articles were included, which were then analyzed through narrative synthesis with thematic presentation. Results: Four themes were identified, and the results showed connections between digital violence and psychological stress. The results are presented thematically and illustrated with quantitative and qualitative findings. Conclusion: The literature review shows that digital violence in close relationships can have extensive consequences. Everyday life, social relationships, work ability, and studies were areas negatively affected by continuous monitoring. The need for increased knowledge and preventive measures is great in order to better prevent and address digital violence in the future

Optimizing Microbial DNA Extraction for Enhanced Molecular Diagnostics of Sepsis2026Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Sepsis requires rapid identification of the infectious microorganism so that targeted antimicrobial treatment can be started as early as possible. Conventional blood culture remains important, but it may require one or more days before preliminary identification is available. This study evaluated manual and semi-automated QIAcube DNA extraction workflows for recovering microbial DNA from Luria Broth-grown bacterial cultures and from human blood samples spiked with Escherichia coli. The extracted DNA was assessed using NanoDrop and Qubit measurements, and selected samples were cleaned with AMPure beads before Oxford Nanopore MinION library preparation and sequencing. Extraction performance was evaluated using DNA concentration, A260/A280 and A260/A230 purity ratios, hands-on time, turnaround time, sequencing output, and Kraken 2 taxonomic classification in EPI2ME. Manual extraction produced higher DNA concentrations for several Escherichia coli culture samples than the semi-automated QIAcube workflow, but the results were more variable between replicates. The QIAcube workflow reduced hands-on time and produced more standardized handling, although total turnaround time was longer because of instrument processing. Blood-derived samples were more challenging because bacterial DNA was present at low abundance together with host-derived human DNA. Nanopore sequencing generated sufficient read yield and quality for taxonomic analysis, and expected bacterial taxa, including Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus epidermidis, were detected in culture-derived and selected blood-derived samples. Classification at a Kraken confidence threshold of 0 improved species-level detection compared with 0.1, although unclassified and Homo sapiens reads remained. Overall, the study supports the potential of nanopore sequencing for rapid microbial identification while showing that host-DNA depletion, extraction efficiency, and low-biomass sample handling require further optimization before clinical implementation.

Utmaningar och möjligheter med Business Intelligence i finansiella organisationer2026Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Sustainable Content Marketing Attributes on Instagram and TikTok and Their Influence on Consumer Trust: The Mediating Role of Perceived Credibility2026Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study investigates how transparency, evidence-based sustainability claims and message consistency in sustainable content marketing on Instagram and TikTok influence consumer trust, and whether perceived credibility mediates these relationships among young adults in South Africa and Cameroon.

Grounded in Brand Credibility Theory and Organizational Trust Theory, a positivist, cross sectional online survey of 276 Instagram and TikTok users aged 18-35 was conducted. Established Likert-scale measures captured sustainable content attributes, perceived credibility and consumer trust. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, correlations, multiple regression, mediation analysis and independent samples t-tests.

Transparency and message consistency significantly and positively predict consumer trust, whereas sustainability claims do not when these attributes are controlled. Perceived credibility partially mediates all three relationships, carrying a particularly large share of the effect of sustainability claims on trust. No significant cross-country differences emerge for transparency, credibility or trust, but Cameroonian respondents report higher perceived message consistency and stronger sustainability claims.

Overall, this study offers one of the first empirically tested models linking sustainable content attributes, credibility and trust on Instagram and TikTok in emerging African markets, highlighting credibility as a central psychological mechanism in sustainability communication to youth.

Functional analysis of altered colonic mucosal micro-ecology in Ffar2ΔGC mice2026Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 30 credits / 45 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The intestinal mucus layer forms an important barrier between the host epithelium and the gut microbiota. Goblet cells are responsible for producing mucus, and they can respond to microbial metabolites such as short-chain fatty acids through receptors including FFAR2. This study aimed to investigate whether goblet cell-specific deletion of Ffar2 affects the composition and functional activity of mucus-associated microbiota in the colon. RNA-seq data from wild-type and Ffar2 goblet cell-specific knockout mice were analyzed using a computational workflow. Reads were quality controlled and classified taxonomically to examine bacterial community composition. Alpha and beta diversity analyses were performed to compare bacterial diversity between groups. In addition, reads were mapped to a publicly available Helicobacter typhlonius reference genome to investigate bacterial gene expression, and mouse gene expression was also analyzed using the host read count matrix. Most RNA-seq reads were assigned to the mouse host, while the bacterial fraction was smaller and varied between samples. The bacterial community was dominated by a limited number of taxa, including Helicobacter, and H. typhlonius was detected as an important bacterial species in several samples. However, alpha diversity, beta diversity, and genus-level community profiles did not show clear or statistically significant differences between wild-type and knockout samples. Similarly, H. typhlonius gene expression and mouse host gene expression did not show significant genotype-associated differences after correction for multiple testing. The most informative bacterial result was the detection of highly expressed H. typhlonius genes in vivo, including genes related to stress response, metabolism, respiration, motility, and general cellular function. In conclusion, this study showed that bacterial RNA, especially from H. typhlonius, could be detected in mouse colon mucus-associated RNA-seq samples. However, no clear evidence was found for a strong effect of goblet cell-specific Ffar2 deletion on bacterial community composition, H. typhlonius gene expression, or mouse host gene expression in this dataset. The results suggest that individual sample variation and uneven bacterial read depth were major factors influencing the analysis.

Narrative and Themes in a Potential Concept Band: An in-depth analysis of Sleep Token's discography2026Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis begins with a look into concept albums, specifically previous research and work by scholars; what ground-work exists and how are concept albums defined? Here, it is established that there is a strong connection between concept albums and transmediality. As part of this, narratology, both in general and in music especially, is also taken into account. What is a narrative, and how have narratives been analysed by other scholars? The main question that arose based on the literature review is if the concept album concept is evolving into something larger, in this case into ‘concept bands’. This, along with other points raised in the literature review works as the basis for the main problems and research questions for this thesis. To help answer the research questions, a methodology and framework was created to help with the analysis of a proposed ‘concept band’: Sleep Token. The analysis takes an in-depth look at Sleep Token’s whole discography to try and answer the research question. This is then discussed, based on the results, ethical considerations and future work.

Gacha-spel och bildkompositionstekniker: En fallstudie på hur gacha-spel använder bildkompositionstekniker  för att öka värdet på kortillustrationer2026Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Testing a novel NBAT1 overexpression therapeutic approach for neuroblastoma, based on long non-coding RNA2026Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Recent developments in mRNA vaccines have opened up new therapeutic opportunities for diseases that remain a global health concern. One of these is neuroblastoma, the most common solid cancer in childhood, with numerous high-risk cases every year. Neuroblastoma-associated transcript 1 (NBAT1) is a long noncoding RNA associated with tumour suppressor functions, and its low expression correlates with higher pathological grade. This study aimed to optimise a procedure for synthesising NBAT1 long non-coding RNA and further investigate if exogenous delivery would restore tumour suppressor function in the neuroblastoma cell line SH-SY5Y. NBAT1 and p53 upregulated modulator of apoptosis (PUMA) expression was profiled by real-time qPCR in SH-SY5Y and BE(2)-C cell lines. NBAT1 and PUMA sequences were cloned into an mRNA expression vector using cloning based on restriction enzymes, with insert identity confirmed by Sanger sequencing. In vitro transcription was performed to generate RNA, which was used to transfect SH-SY5Y cells. Overexpression following transfection was assessed by real-time qPCR, and an apoptosis assay was performed to evaluate downstream effects. NBAT1 and PUMA expression seemed to be higher in the SH-SY5Y cell line than in the BE(2)-C cell line, consistent with the genes’ relation to the p53 pathway and p53 mutation in the BE(2)-C cell line. NBAT1 insert identity was confirmed, though suboptimal plasmid preparation was noted. PUMA cloning was unsuccessful due to an off-target amplification. In vitro transcription reaction yielded RNA, but poor plasmid quality influenced RNA yield and transfection outcomes. Transfections of SH-SY5Y cells with NBAT1 constructs did not result in confirmed overexpression. The apoptosis assay suggested elevated apoptosis in transfected cells, though insufficient replicates did not allow for appropriate statistical analysis. The project represents a first step towards a therapeutic approach based on RNA targeting NBAT1 in neuroblastoma, providing a basis for future optimisation of the procedure setup.

Investigation of physiological and gene expression responses to a low carbohydrate high protein dietary intervention2026Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 15 credits / 22,5 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Low-carbohydrate dietary interventions have gained scientific interest due to their potential effects on body weight, glucose regulation, and energy metabolism. Carbohydrate restriction may also influence biochemical and molecular pathways involved in nutrient sensing and metabolic regulation. The aim of the present study was to investigate physiological, metabolic, biochemical, and molecular responses to a 21-day low-carbohydrate high-protein dietary intervention in healthy young adults. Four healthy university students (two males and two females, aged 20–26 years) participated in the study. Participants maintained carbohydrate intake below approximately 10 g per day during the intervention. Body weight, body composition, blood pressure, fasting blood glucose, and blood ketone concentrations were assessed, while clinical blood biomarkers and amino acid profiles were analyzed using external laboratory services. Gene expression of FOXO3, SIRT1, and BDNF was investigated using quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR), with GAPDH used as the reference gene. Fasting glucose concentrations were lower and blood ketone concentrations were higher during the dietary intervention compared with baseline. When the first seven intervention days were compared with the final seven days, mean fasting glucose decreased from approximately 4.41 to 4.12 mmol/L, while mean ketone concentration increased from approximately 1.24 to 2.46 mmol/L. However, neither difference reached statistical significance. Body weight decreased in all four participants, and numerical decreases were also observed in BMI, visceral fat, and blood pressure. Circulating concentrations of the branched-chain amino acids leucine, isoleucine, and valine increased numerically, although these differences were not statistically significant. Clinical biomarkers showed considerable inter-individual variability, with mixed responses in lipid and other metabolic markers. FOXO3 expression remained largely unchanged, while SIRT1 showed a numerical increase. Reliable quantitative BDNF data were not obtained and were therefore excluded from the final quantitative comparison. Overall, the results showed metabolic adaptation to severe carbohydrate restriction, particularly through lower fasting glucose concentrations and increased ketone production. However, the small sample size, short intervention duration, absence of a control group, and inter-individual variability limit the conclusions that can be drawn. Larger and more controlled studies are required to determine whether the observed physiological, biochemical, and molecular changes are reproducible and persist during longer-term carbohydrate restriction.

Effect of sheet-thickness ratio on fluid flow and keyhole dynamics in laser wobble lap welding of AA1050 aluminum2026In: Journal of Advanced Joining Processes, E-ISSN 2666-3309, Vol. 14, article id 100426Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The integrity of the laser welding joints at the interface between battery tabs and busbars is crucial for ensuring the safety and efficiency of electric vehicles (EVs). Despite advancements in laser welding techniques, the effect of varying interface position on melt pool morphology, fluid flow, and keyhole stability remains unexplored. This study examined how different lap-joint interface positions affected fluid flow, melt pool depth and keyhole dynamics in AA1050 aluminum sheets, using a combination of experiments and numerical simulations. A wobbling pattern was employed to achieve the desired weld joint width, with a ring spot beam introduced to minimize spatter in the melt pool. The results reveal that the lap-joint interface position significantly alters heat distribution, melt pool convection patterns, and keyhole behavior. It was found in a lap-joint of 1 mm upper sheet and 3 mm lower sheet (1–3 mm) that early interaction with the interface promotes unstable fluid flow and keyhole fluctuations. In a 1.5–2.5 mm configuration, balanced heat transfer conditions were observed, resulting in deep penetration. In a 2–2 mm configuration, the penetration efficiency is reduced and susceptibility to porosity at the interface is increased. To gain further insight into the mechanisms leading to these observations, a 3D multiphysics simulation of laser wobbling with a ring spot beam was implemented. The model was validated against single-track experiments, and the results demonstrated that the interface position strongly influenced keyhole morphology and stability.

The human centricity illusion2026In: Frontiers in Industrial Engineering, E-ISSN 2813-6047, Vol. 4, article id 1907420Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Human centricity has become a central but increasingly diluted concept in contemporary industrial development. This brief article argues that many supposedly human-centric production systems remain dependent on human compensation rather than genuine human-centred design. Drawing on resilience engineering, cognitive systems engineering, and the literature on invisible work, the article introduces the concept of the human centricity illusion: a situation where humans are placed at the centre of the system primarily as adaptive buffers who absorb variability, compensate for system flaws, and keep production stable through undocumented workarounds. The article distinguishes between flexibility as competence and flexibility as compensation, and proposes that truly human-centric systems should preserve human adaptability as a strategic resource rather than consume it as a routine operational requirement. Human centricity is therefore framed not as a matter of intention or rhetoric, but as a question of socio-technical system design, governance, incentives, and protected capacity for learning and resilience.

LYSSNA NOGA: NAVIGATION BORTOM DET VISUELLA: Utvecklingen av heuristiker för att utvärdera tillgängligheten för blinda och lågseende spelare2026Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Background: AI-based recruitment tools have become more common in recruitment processes, especially in the first screening of candidates. These tools are mainly used to make the process more efficient and to help recruiters handle a large number of applications. However, the use of AI in recruitment also raises questions regarding transparency, candidate experience and the role of human judgement. Previous research shows that AI can contribute to efficiency, but also that candidates may experience uncertainty when AI is used in assessment processes. This creates a need to understand the differences between recruiters' perspectives and candidates' experiences in AI-based recruitment.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to examine and compare candidates' experiences of AI-based and automated selection processes with recruiters' perspectives on the use of AI support. By comparing candidates' experiences with recruiter's perspectives, the study aims to develop a deeper understanding of where potential differences arise and how these may influence the overall experience of the recruitment process.

Method: This study was conducted using a qualitative comparative research approach, where semi-structured interviews were used to capture both recruiters' and candidates' perspectives on AI-based recruitment. In total, eight candidates were interviewed through snowball sampling and seven recruiters were interviewed through a purposive sampling strategy. The comparative method enabled an analysis of similarities and differences between the parties' perspectives and experiences.

Result: The results of the study show that AI-based assessment is perceived differently by the two parties. The findings indicate that recruiters primarily associate AI with increased efficiency and time savings, especially in the initial screening stage. Candidates' experiences vary but are generally characterized by uncertainty regarding how AI is used and how assessments are made. Both parties highlight that AI has a limited ability to evaluate soft skills, which makes human judgment still crucial.

Working Memory Performance Under Different Cognitive Load Stimuli: A Within-Subject HRV Study2025Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 15 credits / 22,5 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Short-form media on platforms such as YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram have completely changed the way people consume media. Different forms of media compete for our attention and aim to be remembered, liked, and shared. Multimodal media with voice-over stories have gained popularity quickly. Subjectively, it seems to succeed in giving a feeling of heightened attention. However, the actual effects this has on our memory and attention remain unclear. In this study, we sought to contrast predictable, low-event visual stimuli with distracting, high-event stimuli to examine their effects on the encoding of auditory working memory. 21 participants were recruited to perform a memory recall test in three different conditions. Baseline, high-event, and low-event condition memory scores were then compared along with recorded HRV data for each condition to represent cognitive load. No statistical significance between HRV data or memory scores was found. Repeated measures ANOVAs of HRV and memory scores showed p-values higher than 0.05. This means that further research is needed on the subject to understand why it has become such a widespread phenomenon and if there is any real evidence behind this feeling of sustained attention.

PARASOCIALA INTERAKTIONER I KARAKTÄRSDRIVET SPELBERÄTTANDE: En spelanalys av Dragon Age-serien2026Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
