    Abstract [en]

    Paper aims

    Extant Literature based on the resource-based view (RBV) of the firm suggests that it can be used to study organizations of all types and sizes. In essence, the RBV argues that firms that possess rare, non-imitable, valuable, unique, and non-substitutable resources will outperform firms that do not possess such resources. This study questions the applicability of this assumption to smaller businesses, which are likely to have common resources readily available in the market rather than rare, non-imitable, non-substitutable, unique, or valuable resources. The purpose of this study is to discuss whether the composition-based view (CBV) of the firm offers a more promising approach than the RBV to studying small businesses.

    Originality

    This study is one of the first to tentatively suggest a change in theoretical approach when studying small businesses.

    Research method

    A structured critical review approach is taken.

    Main findings

    The findings reveal that the CBV offers a more promising and appropriate theoretical framework than the RBV for research on small businesses, whereas the RBV is better suited to research on larger firms.

    Implications for theory and practice

    Future studies can use RBV and CBV to study large and small businesses, respectively.

    Abstract [en]

    This study explores entrepreneurial orientation (EO) in Finnish social enterprises in a social context using a mixed-methods approach. As a result, we propose that the generic dimensions of EO apply in a social context with minor refinements but suggest an additional dimension of persistence. The social enterprises take substantial financial risks although carefully avoid anything that may jeopardise the firms’ social impact. They exhibit highly innovative behaviour when developing new ways to serve the social purpose as well as when finding new ways to generate income. Furthermore, these enterprises exhibit remarkable persistence in adhering to a course of action despite their experienced difficulties.

    Abstract [en]

    We explore the transition phase in information system (IS) offshore outsourcing, focusing on ongoing decisions made in a client-vendor arrangement and the implications these decisions have for knowledge at risk. Drawing on time-compression and knowledge at risk literatures we argue that firms will need to make ongoing transitional decisions over time as knowledge intensive work is increasingly handed over from client to vendor. We conduct a longitudinal exploratory case study of a strategic development project transitioned from a European client to a company in India over a 4-year period. Analysis indicates: (1) four distinct phases of the transition: penetration, embedment, ramp-up and stabilization; (2) how transitional decisions and knowledge at risk vary across these phases. Results from the longitudinal approach have implications not only for understanding the ‘what’ and ‘how’ in IS offshore outsourcing but also for a deeper insight into the ‘when’ question.

    Abstract [en]

    Purpose – This paper aims to review research on the topic of knowledge risks to establish the current body of knowledge and, on this basis, to suggest some promising avenues for future research.

    Design/methodology/approach – This study consists of a systematic review of 52 refereed articles on knowledge risks.

    Findings – The findings contribute to a more holistic view of the topic and related aspects and, thus, complement the study of knowledge management. Additionally, a number of research questions are proposed, aimed at guiding and informing future research activities.

    Research limitations/implications – This study may not have enabled a complete coverage of all articles in the field of knowledge risks. Yet, based on the chosen research methodology, it seems reasonable to assume that the review process covered a large share of studies available.

    Originality/value – To the best of the author’s knowledge, no systematic literature review on knowledge risks and related issues has previously been published in academic journals.     The purpose of this chapter is to explore and discuss, in the context of Smart Cities (SC), the relations between three concepts: Intellectual Capital (IC), Innovation Process (IP) and Sustainability (S). It is important to note that, in this context, the concept of IC refers to Smart Cities Intellectual Capital (SCIC), which is characterised by four components (Human Capital, Process Capital, Renewal Capital, Clients Capital), also used for Nations IC. The Innovation analysis considers two models: the first one expresses the dependencies and limits of innovation, resulting from physical limitations such as city area and city population; and the second one is the N-Tuple of Helices model. The concept of Smart City will be modelled as a living being capable of rational behaviour, knowledge production, and intellectual activity.

    Abstract [en]

    The paper presents insights into the knowledge creation process in three Icelandic knowledge-intensive small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Data were obtained through a case study methodology. The findings indicate that the three knowledge-intensive companies use complex, non-routine knowledge to deal with complex problems. Often, practical problems are a starting point for new ideas and knowledge development. Brainstorming, collaboration, teamwork, informal and formal gathering and other knowledge creation activities are used in the knowledge creating process. The companies showed many characteristics of SMEs with little formal structure and strategies. The subject of knowledge creation has received little attention in the literature. Thus, the study responds to this situation by giving insights into the knowledge creation processes in knowledge-intensive SMEs.

    Abstract [en]

    This conceptual paper aims to identify, present, and analyze potential knowledge risks organizations might face. With the growing complexity of organizational environments and the plethora of new knowledge risks emerging, this critical but under-researched field of knowledge management (KM) deserves closer attention. The study is based on a critical analysis of the extant literature devoted to knowledge risks, discusses potential outcomes of these risks and proposes a concept map of knowledge risks. The map shows a number of knowledge risks organizations should be aware of. Knowledge risks can be assigned to three categories: human, technological and operational. The research is the first systematic and comprehensive review of knowledge risks at the organizational level. By aggregating and consolidating the knowledge risks covered, the study does not only provide a knowledge risk taxonomy but also promising directions for future research. The study also contributes to a more comprehensive understanding of KM.

    Abstract [en]

    This chapter investigates the skills development practices and their relationship with engineer turnover in IT services companies (henceforth ITSC) from Tunisia. It presents a qualitative analysis of data that derived from a number of interviews conducted with human resource managers of these companies. Based on the findings, four human resources management (HRM) practices were identified that seemingly contribute to skills development in the firms investigated, which are recruitment, training, inter-project mobility, inter-firm cooperation. The findings indicate that these practices can also reduce engineer turnover rates. The chapter provides fresh insights into HRM practices of Tunisian companies, which has not attracted much attention yet.

    Establishing business intelligence analytics (BIA) in small- and medium-sized manufacturing enterprises is a pervasive problem. SME’s - the majority of businesses - play an important role in creating jobs, but research is primarily focused on large corporations. The authors worked with small manufacturing companies at the aspirational capability level but found that their motivation to introduce BIA was low. They had many business challenges but perceived the obstacles (primarily cost and effort) as too great, and their priorities were with operational issues. A two-phase approach based on a well-known analytics maturity model was devised to help raise company motivation. The article describes three studies in different companies using variations of the approach. Comparative analysis of the cases shows that demonstrating a clear path to improved functional efficiency is key to improving motivation, and that simple, easy to learn tools can provide these insights at little cost.

    This article aims to provide a conceptual framework for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to evaluate the appropriation of blockchain technology for their business needs and challenges. This conceptual framework aims to respond to the problem of increasing speculations surrounding the blockchain that is considered to be an absolute and innovative solution to many business related problems. However, this argument might not be realistic for SMEs despite this assumption. The main argument of the article is that SMEs should be skeptical while evaluating the appropriation of this technology for their business needs and they should follow a tailored approach whilst adopting it. Otherwise, the likelihood is high that a short-term and unstructured knowledge management process to adopt blockchain will end up with a waste of resources. The present paper conceptualizes an appropriation framework within nine factors namely, reduction of costs, internalization, digital representation of assets, unalterable data recording, network size, transparent and synchronized ledger, scalability, fair trade, and financing. Given the field’s infancy state of development, the paper relies on a qualitative document analysis involving SME literature and extant literature and white papers of blockchain applications.

    Abstract [en]

    The study of modes of open innovation in smaller companies is still in the development phase. This study responds to this situation and, drawing upon a data set from 4,679 Turkish small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), explores the influence of inbound open innovation and coupled open innovation on marketing innovation as well as process and organisational innovation in SMEs. Results reveal major differences between small and medium-sized Turkish enterprises with regard to both marketing innovation as well as process and organisational innovation. While inbound open innovation positively influences both, marketing as well as process and organisational innovation, the effects for small-sized enterprises are even higher than for medium-sized ones. Coupled open innovation positively influences both innovation outcomes as well, although the effects for medium-sized enterprises are significantly higher than for smaller ones.

    The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of knowledge risk management (KRM) on organizationalperformance, with measures considered as “softer” measures of performance, i.e. innovativeness, responsiveness,sustainability, and agility. Data were collected using an online questionnaire sent to private and public orga-nizations located all over the world. The analysis and hypotheses testing were performed using structuralequation modeling. The results showed that KRM positively affects organizational success, sustainability,growth, innovativeness, and agility, however, KRM does not show any positive effect on the responsiveness oforganizations. The results can help managers and owners to a better understanding of the linkage between KRMand organizational performance. They could use the results to design their KRM practices accordingly. To theauthors' best knowledge, this paper is the first empirical study that has investigated the relationship betweenKRM and organizational performance with a broad organization sample.

    Investments in sustainable practices, such as green innovations are expected to increase both an organization’s long-term survival and its operational performance. Sustainable development of organizations is driven by organizations’ ability to continuously exploit their base of or access to intellectual capital (IC)/knowledge. Thus, organizations of each kind need to integrate the management of IC/knowledge into their overall strategic efforts. Taking the relevance of IC management for organizations’ sustainability and growth intents, the visualization of IC should be a critical component of organizations’ IC management. Against this background, the purpose of this chapter is to explore and discuss the benefits of IC visualization for sustainable development of organizations. More precisely, the focus is on IC visualization for green innovation activities in smaller companies. Smaller firms have been chosen because the resource constraints create unique challenges for both sustainability and growth. Based on a theoretical discussion a set of guidelines for improving green innovations in SMEs taking into account their IC is proposed.

    Organisational culture has repeatedly been reported as the vehiclefor organisational change, but there is still a lack of research that investigatesthe impact of HRM on organisational culture which is attributed tothe absence of comprehensive HRM frameworks. Based on a sample of161 German-speaking enterprises in Austria, Liechtenstein and Switzerland,this study responds to this gap by developing, operationalising and evaluating atypology of culture-oriented HRM systems and their effects on organisationalculture. The results demonstrate that HRM plays a crucial role in developingand shaping an organisational culture in general and that each of the developedHRM system, namely employee-, innovation-, profession and task-orientedfosters the development and/or change of a specific organisational culture inparticular.

    In order to accelerate economic growth, many countries have developed and implemented different programs and mechanisms. Benefiting universities' knowledge production and human capacity are one of those mechanisms and therefore entrepreneurial universities, in particular, are considered as a strategic factor in order to realize this target. While in many advanced economies, mainly in Europe and United States, entrepreneurial universities have been established over the years, but this has not been realized in emerging economies. Against this background and the activities found in Turkey, this article sheds light on the current state of Turkish universities regarding their development into entrepreneurial universities. Main findings show that existence of IP policy and TTO is driving factors for entrepreneurial universities. In addition, IP awareness activities in the campus, novelty search and using patent during academic promotion motivates universities to become more entrepreneurial.

    Abstract [en]

    Purpose – The aim of this paper is to explore knowledge management (KM) practices implemented by third-party logistics service companies (3PLs) and the main barriers slowing down the adoption of such practices.

    Design/methodology/approach – The methodological approach used in this paper is based on a multiple case study analysis involving a set of 3PLs operating in Italy and Sweden.

    Findings – In spite of some adoption, our findings suggest that 3PLs are not sufficiently realizing the full potential of KM. Our evidence also indicates that there is a link between the type of 3PL company (in terms of the breadth and complexity of the services supplied) and the sophistication of KM tools adopted.

    Research limitations/implications – From a practical point of view, the findings may help the management of 3PL companies to take a more strategic approach to KM and thus its contribution to the firms´ overall goals. Additionally, it is critical to conduct a careful analysis of current and future KM needs to identify the most suitable KM solutions linked to the specific characteristics of the business in which 3PLs operate. From a research point of view, further research should focus on the validation of the link between the number and sophistication of KM tools used and the breadth of services supplied. Further research should also focus on exploring how KM can support 3PL companies in enhancing their performance.

    Originality/value – This study provides fresh insights into the adoption of KM practices in logistics service organizations. The findings advance the limited body of knowledge regarding this topic and contribute to the further development of the study of KM.

    Abstract [en]

    This research evaluates the impact of competition from unregistered firms on R&D investment by formal firms in emerging economies by considering their industrial sector and institutional factors, such as intellectual property rights. We performed a study using the propensity score matching approach and the World Bank Enterprise Survey of 16 Latin American emerging economies. We observed that the R&D investment response of formal firms varies according to the typology of industrial sectors. Supplier-dominated industries reduce investments in R&D when confronted with the informal sector. However, science-based, specialized suppliers and scale-intensive industries do not alter their investments. In addition, the level of intellectual property (e.g., IPRI) modifies the effect of the informal sector on R&D investment. Formal firms reduce their investments in R&D when the IPRI environment is underdeveloped. This reduction does not occur in highly developed IPRI environments. We also discuss the finding's theoretical and practical implications and suggest avenues for future research.

    Abstract [en]

    Purpose – The understanding of the later stage (i.e. the exploitation phase) in the new product development (NPD) process by companies from emerging markets is underdeveloped. The purpose of this paper is to address this lack and, by drawing upon a dataset from Turkish firms, explore how different factors affect the exploitation phase of the NPD process.

    Design/methodology/approach – Multiple hierarchical regression analyses were carried out on a sample of 671 Turkish firms operating in five industries (i.e. information and communication technologies, biomedical, machinery, chemical and plastic, and food and beverage) in the Izmir region (Turkey) to test the hypotheses.

    Findings–Results reveal major differences regarding human capital, leadership, marketing capabilities, and business and institutional networks in terms of the commercialization of newly developed products in domestic and international markets. Originality/value – By focusing on the exploitation stage, this paper extents the growing research efforts to study the NPD process of companies in emerging economies other than China by using primary data from Turkey.

    This paper aims to verify the relationships that may exist between knowledge absorptive capacity (ACAP), innovation performance, and organisational performance in Brazilian firms. A sample of 111 firms from Southern Brazil was surveyed and PLSSEM was used to test the theoretical hypotheses. The relevance of ACAP for innovation and organisational performance is supported. The research also shows that realised ACAP has more influence on innovation performance compared with potential ACAP. Some guidelines for furthering ACAP models suitable for developing countries are provided as well. The findings are a good reference for practitioners as they identify possible actions which can enhance ACAP and thereby contribute to improving innovativeness and performance. This research complements earlier studies which called for the exploration of the role of ACAP on innovation performance and firm’s competitiveness in developing countries, and it opens new avenues for multidisciplinary research.

    Against the background of knowledge as an ever more important strategic resource in the current environment, as well as demographic developments which will soon lead to a shortage of expert knowledge, the practice of knowledge management (KM) calls for an even stronger consideration. Knowledge is the critical asset that will help organizations master present and future organizational challenges. This applies to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in particular. Therefore, the aim of this chapter is to discuss KM in SMEs by first defining this category of firms in quantitative and qualitative terms. Once this understanding is established, we turn to the current body of knowledge regarding KM in SMEs and discuss both the benefits and challenges ahead. We then address how to apply knowledge management in SMEs. The chapter concludes with a number of promising research avenues intended to develop further the study of KM in SMEs.

    In environments that are characterized by skill shortage, knowledge retention should be a key activity. Our understanding of this knowledge practice, however, is underdeveloped. The purpose of this chapter is to contribute to the further development of this field. The authors are interested in studying how smaller firms approach the retention of critical knowledge. Semi-structured interviews with organization members of five smaller Austrian firms operating in the building and construction industry were conducted. The findings presented in this chapter advance the limited understanding of knowledge retention in general and regarding smaller businesses. They also contribute to the further development of the study of knowledge management in the building and construction sector. Based on the study's findings, suitable measures to better manage the process of knowledge retention in smaller firms are derived. These measures may be useful for smaller firms operating in similar industries as well.

    Abstract [en]

    Purpose

    This study aims to contribute to the understanding of knowledge risk management (KRM) and a range of related knowledge management practices in the public sector through a case study conducted in a Swedish municipality.

    Design/methodology/approach

    A single case study was conducted in a Swedish municipality involving two offices. Data were collected through an online survey, group interviews and group exercises involving members of the offices who represented different functions, roles and age groups.

    Findings

    The findings underline the need for a systematic approach to KRM for being in a position to continuously deliver the municipality’s products and services, specifically against the knowledge challenges ahead. In addition, the authors identified a number of internal and external factors that are challenging KRM.

    Research limitations/implications

    Data were collected from a single case study, to generalize the findings future research should study additional local governments.

    Practical implications

    A holistic KRM framework is proposed intended to help managers tackle present and future challenges in the public sector.

    Originality/value

    The study contributes to the underdeveloped field of KRM by providing insights into KRM and KRM-related activities found in a Swedish municipality.

    The term “big data” has been discussed often in recent years so it is high time for us to determine the current state of knowledge on big data and the benefits and challenges that its applications may bring to individuals, companies, or the society at large. We argue that such work will allow for greater dissemination of results across both academic research and practitioners. The determination of the body of knowledge will help to systematize research, whereas practitioners will get insights into the pros and cons of using big data, which in turn can provide the basis for the improved use of big data or its first-time application, respectively. Based on a systematic review consisting of 87 papers, this chapter proposes a number of future research avenues that can be used to organize the study of big data. The future avenues and the determination of the current body of knowledge about big data are considered the main contributions of this chapter. Next, we briefly discuss the term “big data.” Then the insights into the methodology are provided. After that, the results are presented. This is followed by a discussion about the possible future research opportunities. The chapter terminates with final remarks and conclusions.

    The purpose of knowledge management is innovation. However, this study proposes that the existence of knowledge management in the knowledge-worker's work environment can nurture the overall satisfaction of knowledge worker. As the ultimate purpose of knowledge management is innovation performance, therefore, the satisfaction of knowledge worker as an outcome of knowledge management should be greater innovation performance. Consequently, the purpose of this study is to test the mediating role of satisfaction of knowledge worker between knowledge management and innovation. The study collected the data from 306 knowledge workers (engineers and managers) of software houses from Pakistan. The SmartPLS 3 Version 2.7 software that uses the PLS-SEM (Partial Least Square-Structural Equation Modelling) technique was used. The results indicate that satisfaction of knowledge worker mediates between two knowledge management processes (knowledge creation and knowledge sharing) and innovation significantly. However, it does not mediate between knowledge utilization and innovation significantly.

    This paper presents a case study that addresses factors that influence unlearning at the individual level. These factors were studied in a public sector organization located in a country characterized by high power distance. The case organization went through a change process of a daily routine caused by the introduction of a new technology. Data were collected through semi structured face-to-face interviews with shop floor agents in the state of Santa Catarina/Brazil. The results highlight the strong influence of the support of formal leaders on the unlearning process of individuals, suggesting that managers operating in a high power distance environment have to make bigger efforts compared to their counterparts in small power distance settings to promote unlearning processes of employees. The study advances the limited body of knowledge regarding unlearning in general and unlearning at the individual level in particular. It also stresses the influence of the national cultural dimension on the unlearning process of individuals.

    The study of corporate governance is dominated by quantitative research and tends to focus on large listed companies businesses. As a response to this situation, this chapter examines how corporate governance is practiced in smaller businesses. It reports findings based on semi-structured interviews conducted with executive staff of smaller privately held firms from the Rhine Valley region. More precisely parts of both Austria (Province of Vorarlberg) and the Principality of Liechtenstein were covered. In total, twenty-five individuals were involved. The findings particularly emphasize the concept of relational governance as a more appropriate governance approach in small firms. Thereby the chapter suggests that the relational governance approach needs to be extended by considering employees and their contribution to governance practices and company development as well. The chapter´s findings may help managing directors of smaller firms to better understand and exploit the benefits of different governance mechanisms in their efforts to cope with different business challenges ahead. The findings may also be used by policy makers helping them to develop improved corporate governance codes and best practice recommendations. To sum up, the chapter provides fresh insights into the practice of governance in smaller firms taken from a practitioner’s perspective. Additionally, it offers the opportunity of expanding our understanding of the topic in different parts of the world.

    What's mine is yours. An increasing number of people are participating in sharing and exchanging information, knowledge, data and goods. As research addressing the so-called ‘sharing economy’ is still in its infancy, this article aims to shed light on it. To do this, a qualitative research approach comprising guided interviews with 14 companies from Germany, Austria and Switzerland provides detailed insights into different aspects of the sharing economy phenomenon. Our results make a direct contribution to sharing economy research, especially regarding the new business models of start-ups. Here, we find a clear difference between the relevance of economic and social orientation. The latter appears to be in higher demand among customers than entrepreneurs. The increasingly digitalized environment has led to a changed living situation characterized by urbanity, openness to new solutions, changed working situations and new mindsets. All of these aspects drive the sharing economy. The results of this paper are summarized in a framework highlighting the requirements, drivers and goals of the sharing economy. Considering the limited research in this field, the developed framework is a strong basis for discussion, critique and/or support of future research.

    Purpose – The purpose of this conceptual and exploratory paper is to explore and discuss possible solutions to integrate the concepts of Smart City (SC) and Intellectual Capital Management (ICM), especially referring to Structural Capital. Based on this we propose a theoretical framework that highlights the relevance of Structural Capital for strategic and operational planning of smarter cities. Design/methodology/approach – Using a neuropsychologic analogy, we assume that the development of smart cities corresponds to the development of a sensorial or even a nervous system for cities based on their Structural Capital, and the development of City Intellectual Capital (CIC) corresponds to a further phase of the cities’ mind development. We propose a practical framework that combines the concepts of city nervous system and city mind. It can be used as an instrument for project management. In this model, sensorial data -associated with the implementation of cities’ sensorial systems - should naturally contribute with open data to the development of higher abstract functions that in turn supports the creation of CIC. Findings –This paper highlights the interrelations between IC (especially its structural component) and SC and their synergic capability of improving both a smart city’s competitiveness and sustainability, and by this illustrates the benefits of combining both concepts in a common theoretical framework. Research limitations/implications – Given the paper’s theoretical nature, the empirical validation of the proposed framework is missing. This limitation will be addressed in forthcoming empirical research. Originality and implications – By proposing a framework that combines the concepts of SC and IC, the paper contributes to theory development regarding the strategic management of cities and the application of IC.

    The paper aims to identify, describe and analyse knowledge risksorganisations might face and based on this, proposes a taxonomy of knowledgerisks. To achieve this goal, a literature review was conducted. After the analysisof the existing material, it was possible to divide knowledge risks into twocategories: internal (originating from the inside of the organisation) andexternal (originating from the outside of the organisation). Some of thepresented knowledge risks appear to have an incidental character (e.g.,knowledge spillover, knowledge leakage or knowledge waste), while others areof a continued nature (e.g., knowledge attrition or risks connected withknowledge work).Our study is not only timely but also relevant for initiating increased andrigorous research activities in the field of knowledge risks. The proposedtaxonomy will also help organisations in concentrating on their crucialknowledge and in finding ways to prevent or reduce these risks.

    Abstract [en]

    Continued new product introduction (NPI) concerns all companies regardless if they are from advanced economies or emerging ones. Our understanding of NPI in emerging economies is still in the development phase. There is also a lack of studies of variations across sectors relating to determinants of NPI in particular. This study addresses these lacks and, drawing upon a dataset from Turkish companies, it explores whether there are di®erences regarding infuential factors on the introduction of new products or services across sectors. Results reveal major differences with regard to human capital, social capital, and leadership capital.

    Abstract [en]

    This paper aims to review research that determines the influence of outsourcing on knowledge management and learning, a process which will help identify new research opportunities and contribute to the further development of outsourcing theory. The study consists of a review of 34 refereed articles on outsourcing in relation to knowledge management and learning. The findings were summarised in a number of hypotheses and two conceptual models which highlight the contribution of outsourcing to either competitive advantage or disadvantage. This study may not have enabled a complete coverage of all peer reviewed articles in the field of outsourcing in relation to learning and knowledge management. Yet, it seems reasonable to assume that the review process covered a large share of studies available. To the best of the authors' knowledge, no literature review on this topic has previously been published in academic journals.

    Abstract [en]

    The purpose of this study is to increase our understanding of how SMEs retain critical knowledge. Against the background of the underdeveloped body of knowledge regarding knowledge retention, the authors selected an explorative (qualitative) research approach. More precisely, they conducted semi-structured interviews with organization members (i.e. executive and regular staff) of five Austrian SMEs operating in the building and construction industry. This study provides fresh insights into knowledge retention in SMEs. The findings advance the limited understanding of knowledge retention in general and regarding SMEs. They also contribute to the further development of the study of knowledge management in the building and construction sector. Based on the study's findings the authors derive suitable measures to better manage the process of knowledge retention in SMEs. These measures may be useful for SMEs operating in other industries as well.

    Abstract [en]

    Universities are considered as the central actors for developing knowledge needed to drive economic growth and development, thus it is important to study how well universities manage this role. In particular against the background of knowledge-based developments which have increased lately. Therefore, the aim of the paper is to review research on universities and knowledge-based development in order to identify gaps in our understanding. In accordance with this aim, the following research questions were formulated: Which areas are researched? What is the gap in the literature? What are the main findings of the reviewed studies? What are possible directions for further research in the field? We propose the approach of a literature review for the period 1997–2016 in order to answer the question on the role of universities in knowledge-based development. The review resulted in 49 empirical studies, and four main themes were identified: knowledge transfer from universities to industry, universities as component of knowledge city design, universities and knowledge-based development, and university-industry collaboration. The paper concludes with a research agenda highlighting several promising areas for future research.

    Abstract [en]

    This paper looks into knowledge that is ‘wasted’ in organisations, that is existing relevant knowledge that is not (re)used in business operations. Against the backdrop of today’s business environment, a lack of knowledge application is not only costly but also dangerous. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to review research on knowledge reuse (waste) in organisations to identify our current body of knowledge and gaps in the field justifying further research activities. In order to do so, the study consists of a systematic review of 52 refereed empirical articles on knowledge reuse in organisations. The topic seems to be a promising field for intensive research and offers a variety of future research avenues. Some ideas for future research are proposed in this study.

    Abstract [en]

    This article reports on the involvement of nurses and physicians in improvement work, with a special focus on the drivers. The purpose was to describe how the nurse and physician groups understand involvement drivers for improvement work and to explain the differences in how they understand involvement. The study was conducted at 2 Swedish hospitals, and a total of 20 nurses and 10 physicians were interviewed. The theoretical framework, developed by an interpretative approach, identifies and describes a number of involvement drivers. On clustering the drivers into larger involvement factors, the study shows clear differences and profiles in terms of the 2 groups' perception and understanding of the involvement—drivers. Each group's profile was then analyzed on the basis of concept of professional culture.

    The advantages of sharing knowledge when participating in a Supply Chain (SC) are well established in the literature, but the challenge of knowledge leakage, and how to manage it, is still in its infancy. In order to increase the understanding of knowledge leakage, when SMEs participate in SCs, this study describes types of knowledge that may leak away, how they are valued, and how knowledge leakage can occur. The result includes two frameworks that also have shown to be potentially useful for examining the maturity of a specific SME with regard to knowledge leakages when participating in the SC.

    This chapter presents a knowledge risk management framework. In turbulent times organizations of all sizes are required to be even more prepared to make necessary changes in their business strategies. Access to knowledge that is relevant and up-to-date is critical in meeting this challenge. Knowledge however is not always positive, i.e. something of value, but has a negative side as well. This situation can be tackled with a knowledge risk management approach that addresses knowledge from a holistic point of view. Therefore this approach supports companies in better managing their critical knowledge to master present and future business challenges. The aim of this chapter is to introduce knowledge risk management and its contribution to meeting these challenges. Regarding Knowledge management tools refer to the following chapter.

    In this paper we are interested in developing an understanding of the concepts of knowledge waste and knowledge loss. The latter can in the worst case lead to "a decreased capacity for effective action or decision making in a specific organizational context" (DeLong, 2004, p. 21). Whereas knowledge waste means that companies are not using the full capacity of existing knowledge. As outlined by Ferenhof (2011) it is any failure in the process of knowledge conversion. These definitions imply differences between the concepts, the literature however suggests that many authors uses them interchangeably. Is that correct? Are the concepts important, of relevance? The present article's aim is to highlight the importance of having better insights into the concepts. The authors believe that both theory and corporate practice will benefit from an improved understanding.

    Even though the study of risk management (RM) in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) has increased recently, there have been few cross-country studies. Therefore, the present research project can be considered as one of the first of its kind drawing upon an extensive empirical study into the status of RM in SMEs. More precisely, the cross-country study, involving SMEs from China, Germany and Scotland, investigates differences in their RM practices. The findings, which were based on a web-based survey, provide a clearer understanding of the personal and organisational factors that have influenced the RM practices of SMEs in these countries. This study also sheds light on the influence that the perception of environmental uncertainty has on the RM efforts in SMEs.

    The ageing workforce soon leads to a number of retirements in government organisations that will put the knowledge basis at risk. Addressing this point the present study provides an analysis and evaluation of a Swedish municipality’s dealing with the aspects of knowledge management and succession planning against the background of demographic developments and the increased relevance of knowledge. It reports findings based on semi-structured interviews conducted with executive staff of the municipality. Results of data analysed show that the municipality is far from being ready to master the challenges ahead. To date the municipality follows a sporadic approach rather than a strategic and planned one when addressing the issue of succession planning. Indeed, the findings suggest that a muddling through approach prevails. Based on the findings some suggestions were derived that may help both municipalities facing similar circumstances as well as policy makers drafting suitable policies.

    The purpose of this paper is to review extant research on knowledge risk management (KRM) to establish our body of knowledge and to identify gaps justifying further research activities. The study is based on a systematic review of peer-reviewed empirical and conceptual articles on the management of knowledge risks. This proceeding proves evidence that there are a small number of papers addressing knowledge risks and its management. The recommendations derived from the findings can assist researchers, managers and consultants to better understand the critical importance of integrating KRM in the firms’ enterprise risk management. This increased understanding can particularly be useful for managers as better decisions will be possible.

    Design is an activity that formulates, physically and mentally, the “environment” of human (designer and user) and the “artifact” interaction. To develop the mentioned “interaction” it is vital to understand the mechanism of the design and designers’ behavior and approaches as a manageable knowledge-based outlook. According to our literature review, there is not any specific integrated model based on Knowledge Management (KM) and sharing information explaining the “Architectural Creation and Conceptualization”. In this paper, it has been emphasized that architectural design is a creative process of converting knowledge and information into products and/or services (Durst et al., 2014), based on requirements into an upper level of awareness as the product concept and capturing the new knowledge as the solutions which are complete, clear, and consistent. Regardless the normative considerations, an organizational framework based on knowledge for architecture SMEs, can improve the overall performance of the architecture design enterprises. The objective of this article is to propose the need of a new approach toward “Architectural Design Process Syntax” (Yousefi, 2014) based on the developing a KM visual system/model illuminating the managerial approach in the process. The final Visual KM model could be used as a conceptual reference for architectural design process in architectural small and medium offices (SMEs). The authors have mainly followed the literature study, task analysis based on interviews and questionnaires and also visual models, as the assessment and result methodology. This article also reflects the lack of application of the key knowledge management initiatives in architecture SMEs and highlights the essential of a managerial approach toward the question by presenting some potential line of research.

    Champions are commonly suggested as a means of promoting the adoption of information systems. Since there are many different definitions of the concepts of champion and champion behaviour in the literature, practitioners and researchers may be confused about how to exactly use these concepts. A qualitative analysis of a single case study in a Swedish health-care organisation enabled us to explain how different champion behaviours relate to each other and how multiple champions interact. Combining our rich case observations with an analysis of champion literature reveals how champion behaviours form a coherent and meaningful whole in which networks of different types of champions at different levels in an organisation utilise their network of relations, their knowledge of the organisation and their insight into strategic decision-making politics to time and orchestrate the framing of innovations and the involvement of the right people. In conclusion, championing is a complex performance of contextually dependent collective social interaction, varying over time, rather than a heroic act of one individual promoting an idea. Future studies need to focus more on how the relations between different champions and their behaviours develop across innovations and over time, in order to develop a richer understanding of championing.

    In the context of succession planning a huge number of critical knowledge can be at risk. This challenges smaller firms in particular. Based upon this, the chapter intends to highlight the contribution of IT-supported repositories to small and medium-sized enterprises (SME) succession planning as a promising approach to better cope with the risk of knowledge loss. More precisely, the aim of this chapter is to analyze different types of knowledge loss in the capture process with SME succession planning to demonstrate the potentials and deficiencies with IT-supported knowledge repositories. The findings presented in this chapter will hopefully contribute to a better understanding of how to deal with knowledge loss in the capture process when using IT-supported knowledge repositories for SME succession planning.

    Purpose – Clinical governance and leadership concepts can lead to more or less successfulimplementations of new clinical practice. The purpose of this paper is to examine how Fiery Spirits, asinstitutional entrepreneurs can, working in a team, implement sustained change in hospital clinicalpractice.Design/methodology/approach – This paper describes two case studies, conducted at two Swedishhospitals over a period of two years, in which changes in clinical practice were implemented. In bothcases, key-actors, termed Fiery Spirits, played critical roles in these changes. The authors use aqualitative approach and take an intra-organizational perspective with semi-structured in-depthinterviews and document analysis.Findings – The new clinical practices were successfully implemented with a considerable influenceof the Fiery Spirits who played a pivotal role in the change efforts. The Fiery Spirits persuasively,based on their structural and normative legitimacy and the adoption of learning processes, advocated,and supported change.Practical implications – Fiery Spirits, given flexibility and opportunity, can be powerful forcesfor change outside the trajectory of management-inspired and management-directed change.Team members, when inspired and encouraged by Fiery Spirits, are less resistant to change and morewilling to test new clinical practices.Originality/value – The paper complements literature on how the Fiery Spirit concept aligns withconcepts of clinical governance and leadership and how change can be achieved. Additionally, thefindings show the effects of legitimacy and learning processes on change in clinical practice.
