Faktorer som påverkar sjuksköterskors upplevelse av palliativ vård2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Palliative care is a special kind of care that focuses on giving relief care to patients that are living with life threatening diseases. The disease is no longer in focus in palliative care and it is therefore offered to people who have an incurable life threatening disease. It focuses on relieving the patient’s discomfort and suffering, increase wellbeing and create conditions for an increased quality of life. Aim: The aim was to describe factors that influence on nurse’s experience of palliative care. Method: In order to give an objective and systematic conclusion of the current knowledge a literature study was chosen. Result: The palliative care is complex and nine factors emerged that play an important role in the nurse's experiences of palliative care. These factors were professional experience and skills, lack of professional experience and skills, strengthening relationships, co-worker support, and lack of ability to keep a professional distance, relative’s denial, lack of cooperation between the nurses and doctors, holistic care and symptom control and lack of holistic care and symptom control. These factors influenced nurse’s experiences, both positive and negative. Positive experiences were to find meaning in their work, satisfaction, personal development and confirmation. Meaningless, stress, inadequacy and anxiety were negative experiences.

An unusual case of congenital muscular dystrophy with normal serum CK level, external ophtalmoplegia, and white matter changes on brain MRI2007In: European journal of paediatric neurology, ISSN 1090-3798, E-ISSN 1532-2130, Vol. 11, no 6, p. 381-384Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

We report a sporadic case of congenital muscular dystrophy (CMD) in a 13-year-old girl with early manifestation of muscle weakness and hypotonia, severe contractures, bulbar syndrome, progressive external ophtalmoplegia, and white matter changes on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain, but no mental defect. Serum creatine kinase (CK) level was normal. Muscle biopsy revealed a dystrophic picture with a prominent inflammatory infiltrate mimicking inflammatory myopathy-typical histological findings in CMD. Immunostaining showed normal expression of merosin, alpha and beta-dystroglycans. Mutation analyses of calpain3, dysferlin, and SEPN1 genes were negative. An electron microscopy revealed the accumulation of abnormally enlarged mitochondria located under the sarcolemma. Measurement of respiratory chain enzyme activities did not reveal any biochemical defect and mitochondrial genetic studies, including sequencing of the entire mitochondrial genome, were unremarkable. Phenotypic presentation of our patient is very unusual and differs considerably from other CMD variants.

Mäns upplevelser av att drabbas av hjärtinfarkt: studie av självbiografier2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Being suffered by myocardial infarction is for many people a traumatic experience and problems can also occur in the daily life, for a long time after the infarction. The aim of the study was to analyse and describe experiences when suffering a myocardial infarction, by lived experience. Autobiographies were used to collect data. Data were analysed using qualitative content analysis. All of the autobiographies were written by men. The result is represented by four main categories; Become ill, The caring relation, Needs and Coping. In the acute care the informants’ did not have control of their situation and they had a feeling of being deserted to the caring staff. The experience could also be positive, like the possibility to be able to leave the responsibility for their health to the caring staff. There was a need of sharing experiences with fellow patients and there was also a need for professional nearness and distanced nearness and they coped with the situation by looking forward, to adjust oneself and to take one step at the time.

Destination Branding in Relation to Airports: The Case of the City of Valencia2011In: European Journal of Transport and Infrastructure Research, ISSN 1567-7133, E-ISSN 1567-7141, Vol. 11, no 3, p. 334-345Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This study investigates various factors that contribute to the success of destination branding efforts where success is defined as the increase in airplane passenger numbers to a destination and its linked air transportation. Drawing on in-depth interviews and snowball sampling, the study examines the roles of many of the key actors involved in the efforts to increase passenger numbers. Using the City of Valencia in Spain as a case study, the role of its airport is examined as a factor of particular interest. The study concludes that Valencia has positioned itself among neighbouring destinations on the Spanish Mediterranean coast by its focus on high profile events and cultural tourism. However, other actors have taken a more active role in the effort to increase the number of tourists than the Valencia Airport that has taken a more passive role. Another finding is that the persistence in seeking resources for the costly branding efforts was another influential factor that explains the increase in Valencia tourism.

Analysis of material flow and simulation-based optimization of transportation system: The combination of simulation and Lean to evaluate and design a transportation system2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The thesis has been performed in cooperation with a Swedish manufacturing company. The manufacturing site of the company is currently implementing a new machine layout in one of its workshops. The new layout will increase the product flow to another workshop on the site. The goal of the thesis was to evaluate the current transportation system and suggest viable alternatives for the future product flow. By means of discrete event simulation these alternative solutions would be modelled and subsequently optimized to determine if their performance is satisfactory. An approximated investment cost of the solutions would also be estimated.

By performing a literature review and creating a frame of reference, a set of relevant methodologies were selected to provide a foundation to the project. Following these methodologies, the current state of transportation was identified and mapped using Value Stream Mapping. Necessary data from the current flow was identified and collected from the company computer systems. This data was deemed partly inaccurate and further verification was needed. To this end, a combination of Genchi Genbutsu, assistance from onsite engineers and a time study was used to verify the unreliable data points. The data sets from the time study and the company data which was deemed valid were represented by statistical distributions to provide input for the simulation models.

Two possible solutions were picked for evaluation, an automated guided vehicle system and a tow train system. With the help of onsite personnel, a Kaizen Event was performed in which new possible routing for the future flow was evaluated. A set of simulation models portraying the automated guided vehicle system and the tow train system were developed with the aid of simulation software. The results from these models showed a low utilization of both systems. A new set of models were developed, which included all the product flows between the workshops. The new flows were modelled as generic pallets with the arrival distribution based on historical production data. This set of models were then subject for optimization with regard to the work in process and lead time of the system. The results from the optimization indicates the possibility to reduce the overall work in process by reducing certain buffer sizes while still maintaining the required throughput. These solutions were not deemed to be ready for implementation due to the low utilization of the transportation systems. The authors instead recommend expanding the scope of the system and including other product flows to reach a high utilization.

Determinants of sickness absence rate among Finnish municipal employees2019In: Scandinavian Journal of Primary Health Care, ISSN 0281-3432, E-ISSN 1502-7724, Vol. 37, no 1, p. 3-9Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Objective: In addition to acute health problems, various aspects of health behavior, work-related and sociodemographic factors have been shown to influence the rate of sickness absence. The aim of this study was to concomitantly examine factors known to have an association with absenteeism. We hypothesized the prevalence of chronic diseases being the most important factor associated with sickness absence. Design: A cross-sectional study. Setting: Occupational health care in the region of Pori, Finland. Subjects: 671 municipal employees (89% females) with a mean age of 49 (SD 10) years. Information about the study subjects was gathered from medical records, by physical examination and questionnaires containing information about physical and mental health, health behavior, work-related and sociodemographic factors. The number of sickness absence days was obtained from the records of the city of Pori. Main outcome measures: The relationship of absenteeism rate with sociodemographic, health- and work-related risk factors. Results: In the multivariate analysis, the mean number of chronic diseases (IRR 1.24, 95% CI 1.13 to 1.36), work ability (IRR 0.83, 95% CI 0.76 to 0.91), and length of years in education (IRR 0.90, 95% CI 0.85 to 0.95) remained as independent factors associated with absenteeism. Conclusion: According to our results, chronic diseases, self-perceived work ability and length of years in education are the most important determinants of the rate of sickness absence. This implies that among working-aged people the treatment of chronic medical conditions is also worth prioritizing, not only to prevent complications, but also to avoid sickness absences. KEY POINTS Various sociodemographic, health- and work- related risk factors have been shown to influence sickness absence. The study aimed to find the most important determinants of absenteeism among several known risk factors in Finnish municipal employees. Chronic diseases, self-perceived work ability and education years remained as the most important determinants of sickness absence rates. Treatment of chronic medical conditions should be prioritized in order to reduce sickness absence rate. © 2019, © 2019 The Author(s). Svårigheter och möjligheter i mötet mellan sjuksköterska och patient med övervikt eller fetma.: En litteraturöversikt2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Säkerhetens betydelse för elektronisk handel1999Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Ikonisk karaktärsdesign: utvecklande av karaktärsdesign i ett konvergent mediasamhälle2010Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Background: HIV is a global problem, about 30-36 million people have the disease. Generally, people with HIV infection have worse health and sense of coherence, the need for information has health-related effects on patients.

Purpose: The purpose is to describe nurses' knowledge and its importance in the care of patients with HIV infection.

Method: The study consists of a literature review with thirteen articles of both quantitative and qualitative approach.

Results: Nurses have the will and believe they need to learn more about the disease. Positive attitudes towards patients are associated with better knowledge. Education about HIV reduces fear and gives nurses greater understanding of discrimination and stigmatization.

Conclusion: The knowledge of nurses is important in the care of patients with HIV infection; it manifests itself in attitudes and positions, as well as fear and stigma. Knowledge reduces the fear of nurses, leading to good health care for patients. The nurse's awareness that behavior affects stigma means that health is likely to increase in the patients.

Förstföderskors upplevelser av socialt stöd under graviditet2016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Background: One of the major events in human life is childbearing and the transition to becoming a parent.  It is a momentous time when women are especially vulnerable and the possibility of increased support should be available to create conditions for health and wellbeing. According to previous research, there is a clear correlation between perceived social support and numerous health benefits. Problem: However, there is barely research on pregnant women's experiences of social support during pregnancy. Aim: The aim of this study was to describe pregnant women's experiences of social support before childbirth and parenting. Method: A qualitative content analysis with an inductive approach was used as a method. Semi-structured telephone interviews were conducted and totally 15 first-time pregnant women were included in the study. Results: The results are presented in three categories with an overall theme. The result showed that social support during pregnancy had a keyrole in women's experiences of mental preparation and security for childbirth and parenthood. Conclusion: The women described the social support like a big puzzle, where each piece of the puzzle of social support contributed to a complete puzzle of mental preparation. Professional support, through for example, midwives, could facilitate social support. To meet the needs of pregnant women it is important that the professional who comes in contact with them are aware of how they can provide support, in order to facilitate social support.

LIVET EFTER EN HJÄRTINFARKT: en studie om patienters upplevelser2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

A great number of people suffer yearly from myocardial infarction (MI) and it´s the most common cause of death within cardiovascular disease. An MI often strikes suddenly and the patient is often unprepared, yet the diagnosis will interfere with the victim for the rest of their life. Knowledge about this illness has steadily increased but more has to be researched concerning the patients experience of their illness. The aim of this study is to describe patient experiences after an MI. The research method is a literature review, which consists of ten qualitative articles. The result is presented in five different themes: A changed approach to life, To accept or deny your illness, To make change in your lifestyle, The importance of personal support and information and To get a second chance. Most people experiences are different to each other and they cope with this change in different ways. Personal support is important but the support from medical society is often not optimal. Some people look at life in a positive way and find that their new way of life is rewarding, but others find their new situation to be scary and restrained. Thus patients experience recovery after an MI quite differently and our conclusion is that the support to patients should be individualized and often life-long.

Serious Platform Games: A comparative study between a serious game and a conventional method2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 15 credits / 22,5 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

A big problem in the world today is vaccine hesitancy (VH), a tool to combat this could be to use serious games (SG) as a tool for education. There has been some research into this field, these studies have mainly used a single game or looked at a series of games, and they have required quite a lot of interaction. A trivia can allow the player to focus on thinking rather than performing various tasks; even if both can be equally educational.

In this work a platform game was developed and used together with a questionnaire to test the knowledge of the common person in regard to vaccines and vaccine preventable diseases. 20 people participated in this study, 10 in a control group and 10 in the game group.

The results in this study show that there was no significant statistical difference between a serious platform game and a compendium when it comes to learning.

Tids- och verklighetsuppfattning genom sceneri i virtuella miljöer2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

ESTETISK VÄGPLANERING: Prestanda hos A*PS och Theta*2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Valörers betydelse i spel: En studie om att upptäcka föremål2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

EDI: en studie i grossistmiljö2001Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Analysis of transmembrane and globular protein depending on their solvent energy2009Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The number of experimentally determined protein structures in the protein data bank (PDB) is continuously increasing. The common features like; cellular location, function, topology, primary structure, secondary structure, tertiary structure, domains or fold are used to classify them. Therefore, there are various methods available for classification of proteins. In this work we are attempting an additional method for making appropriate classification, i.e. solvent energy. Solvation is one of the most important properties of macromolecules and biological membranes by which they remain stabilized in different environments. The energy required for solvation can be measured in term of solvent energy. Proteins from similar environments are investigated for similar solvent energy. That is, the solvent energy can be used as a measure to analyze and classify proteins. In this project solvent energy of proteins present in the Protein Data Bank (PDB) was calculated by using Jones’ algorithm. The proteins were classified into two classes; transmembrane and globular. The results of statistical analysis showed that the values of solvent energy obtained for two main classes (globular and transmebrane) were from different sets of populations. Thus, by adopting classification based on solvent energy will definitely help for prediction of cellular placement.

Cohesive modelling of the temperature dependence of epoxy based adhesives in Mode I and Mode II loading2013Licentiate thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

In this work, the influence of the temperature on the cohesive laws for two epoxy adhesives is studied at temperatures below the glass transition temperature for both Mode I and Mode II loading. Cohesive laws are measured experimentally under quasi-static loading conditions in the temperature range -30≤T≤80"C" . Three parameters of the cohesive laws are studied in detail: the elastic stiffness, the peak stress and the fracture energy. Methods for determining the elastic stiffness in Mode I and Mode II are derived and evaluated. With these methods, the results in this work show that it is possible to measure all three parameters for each pure mode loading case by the use of only the DCB- and the ENF-test specimens. Even though the measures tend to spread in values, this can significantly reduce the cost for performing experiments. It is shown that most of the cohesive parameters are decreasing with an increasing temperature in both loading modes and for both adhesives. An exception is the Mode I fracture energy for one of the adhesives. This is shown to be independent of the temperature in the studied temperature range. For the same adhesive, the Mode II fracture energy is shown to be continuously decreasing with an increasing temperature. The experimental results are verified by finite element analyses. The simulations only consider uncoupled cohesive behaviours. By use of the experimental results, simplified bi-linear cohesive laws to be used at any temperature within the studied temperature range are derived for one adhesive in both loading modes. This is desired in order to simulate adhesively bonded structures that suffer a wide range in temperature.

Influences of temperature, fatigue and mixed mode loading on the cohesive properties of adhesive layers2015Doctoral thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This thesis concerns some aspects that have influence on the strength of adhesive layers. The strength is determined by the stress deformation-relation of the layer. This relation is also referred to as cohesive law. The aspects having influence on the cohesive laws that are studied in this work are temperature, fatigue, multi-axial fatigue and mixed mode loading.

For each aspect, a model is developed that can be used to describe the influence of the aspects on the cohesive laws numerically, e.g. by using the finite element method. These models are shown to give good agreement with the experimental results when performing simulations that aims at reproducing the experiments. For the aspect of temperature, a FE-model is suggested that can be used to simulate the mechanical behaviour in pure mode loadings at any temperature within the evaluated temperature span. Also, a damage law for modelling high cycle fatigue in a bonded structure in multi-axial loading is presented. Lastly, a new experimental set-up is presented for evaluating strength of adhesives during mixed mode loading. The set-up enables loading with a constant mode-mix ratio and by the experimental results, a potential model for describing the mechanical behaviour of the evaluated adhesive is presented.

System for measurement of cohesive laws2009Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 15 credits / 22,5 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In this thesis an experimental method to calculate cohesive characteristics for an adhesive layer in a End Notched Flexure (ENF) specimen is presented and evaluated. The method is based on the path independent J-integral where the energy release rate (ERR) for the adhesive is derived as a function of the applied forces and the rotational displacements at the loading point and at the supports of the specimen. The major advantage with the method in comparison with existing theory known by the job initiator is that it is still applicable with ENF specimens that are subjected to yielding of the adherends.

The structure of this thesis is disposed so that the theory behind the J-integral method is shortly described and then an evaluation of the method is performed by aid of finite element simulations using beam and cohesive elements. The finite element simulations indicates that the ERR can be determined with good accuracy for an ENF specimen where a small scale yielding of the adherends has occurred. However when a fully cross sectional yielding of the adherends is reached the ERR starts diverging from the exact value and generates a too high ERR according to input data in the simulations, i.e. the exact values. The importance in length of the adhesive process zone is also shown to be irrelevant to the ERR measured according to the J-integral method.

Simulation performed with continuum elements indicates that a more reality based FE- simulation implies a higher value of the applied load in order to create crack propagation. This is an effect of that the specimen is allowed to roll on the supports which makes the effective length between the supports shorter than the initial value when the specimen is deformed. This results in a stiffer specimen and thus a higher applied force is needed to create crack propagation in the adhesive layer.

An experimental set up of an ENF specimen is created and the sample data from the experiments are evaluated with the J-integral method. For measuring the rotational displacements of the specimen which are needed for the J-integral equation an image system is developed by the author and validated by use of linear elastic beam theory. The system calculates the three rotational displacements of the specimen by aid of images taken by a high resolution SLR camera and the system for measuring the rotations may also be used in other applications than for a specific ENF geometry. The validation of the image system shows that the rotations calculated by the image system diverge from beam theory with less than 2.2 % which is a quite good accuracy in comparison with the accuracies for the rest of the used surveying equipment.

The results from the experiment indicates that the used, about 0.36 mm thick SikaPower 498, adhesive has an maximum shear strength of 37.3 MPa and a critical shear deformation of 482 µm. The fracture energy is for this thickness of the adhesive is determined as 12.9 kJ/m2.

This report ends with a conclusion- and a suggested future work- chapter.

An evaluation of the temperature dependence of cohesive properties for two structural epoxy adhesives2012In: 19th European Conference on Fracture, Kazan Scientific Centre of the Russian Academy of Sciences , 2012Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Cohesive modelling provides a more detailed understanding of the fracture properties of adhesivejoints than provided by linear elastic fracture mechanics. A cohesive model is characterized by astress-deformation relation of the adhesive layer. This relation can be measured experimentally. Two parameters of the stress-deformation relation are of special importance; the area under thecurve, which equals the fracture energy, and the peak stress. The influence of temperature of theseparameters is analyses experimentally and evaluated statistically for two structural epoxy adhesivesin the span from of -40°C to +80°C. The adhesives are used by the automotive industry and atemperature span below the glass transition temperature is considered. The results show that thattemperature has a modest influence on the adhesives Mode I fracture energy. For one of theadhesives, the fracture energy is independent of the temperature in the evaluated temperature span.In mode II, the influence of temperature is larger. The peak stresses decreases almost linearly withan increasing temperature in both loading cases and for both adhesives.

Temperature dependence of cohesive laws for an epoxy adhesive in Mode I and Mode II loading2013In: International Journal of Fracture, ISSN 0376-9429, E-ISSN 1573-2673, Vol. 183, no 2, p. 203-221Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The influence of the temperature on the cohesive laws for an epoxy adhesive is studied in the glassy region, i.e. below the glass transition temperature. Cohesive laws are derived in both Mode I and Mode II under quasi-static loading conditions in the temperature range C. Three parameters of the cohesive laws are studied in detail: the elastic stiffness, the peak stress and the fracture energy. Methods for determining the elastic stiffness in Mode I and Mode II are derived and evaluated. Simplified bi-linear cohesive laws to be used at any temperature within the studied temperature range are derived for each loading mode. All parameters of the cohesive laws are measured experimentally using only two types of specimens. The adhesive has a nominal layer thickness of 0.3 mm and the crack tip opening displacement is measured over the adhesive thickness. The derived cohesive laws thus represent the entire adhesive layer as having the present layer thickness. It is shown that all parameters, except the Mode I fracture energy, decrease with an increasing temperature in both loading modes. The Mode I fracture energy is shown to be independent of the temperature within the evaluated temperature span. At C the Mode II fracture energy is decreased to about 2/3 of the fracture energy at C. The experimental results are verified by finite element analyses.

Fatigue damage of adhesive layers: experiments and models2014In: Procedia Materials Science, ISSN 2211-8128, Vol. 3, p. 829-834Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Mode I fatigue crack growth at load levels close to the threshold is studied with the aim of improving the understanding of the fatigue properties. We also aim at identifying a suitable damage evolution law for large-scale simulation of built-up structures. A fatigue test rig is designed where up to six specimens are tested simultaneously. Each specimen is evaluated separately indicating the specimen-to-specimen variation in fatigue properties. A rubber-based and a PUR-based adhesive are tested. The two adhesives represent adhesives with very different material properties; the rubber adhesive is a stiff structural adhesive and the PUR adhesive is a soft modular adhesive. The experiments are first evaluated using a traditional Paris’ law approach. Inspired by an existing damage evolution law, a modified damage evolution law is developed based on only three parameters. The law is implemented as a user material in Abaqus and the parameters are identified. The results from simulations show a very good ability to reproduce the experimental data. With this model of fatigue damage, a zone of damage evolves at the crack tip. The extension of this zone depends on the stiffness of the adherends; stiffer adherends leads to a larger damage zone. This means that the rate of crack growth depends on the stiffness of the adherends. Thus, not only the state at the crack tip governs the rate of crack growth. This is in contrast to the results of a model based on Paris’ law where only the state at the crack tip, through the energy release rate, governs the rate of crack growth. This indicates that the threshold value of the energy release rate may depend on the stiffness of the adherends.

Prediction of mixed-mode cohesive fatigue strength of adhesively bonded structure using Mode I data2016In: International Journal of Adhesion and Adhesives, ISSN 0143-7496, E-ISSN 1879-0127, Vol. 66, p. 15-25Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

A cohesive zone model is presented for analyzing the fatigue life of an adhesive joint in the range of 104–106 load cycles. The parameters of the model are derived from Mode I double cantilever beam experiments. Fatigue experiments with adhesively joined components from the automotive industry are performed, and the results from the experiments are compared to the results of simulations. The error in the predicted fatigue strength is of the same order as the statistical deviation of the fatigue experiments, indicating that the simulation method produces acceptable predictions of the fatigue strength for applications in e.g. early product development.

    Abstract [en]

Background:Our meat intake increases. Previous research has shown the connection between high meat intake, including cardiovascular disease and cancer. Information on appropriate diet to reduce the risk of endemic disease is limited. Research on health and disease in women is limited and, therefore, women's health must be taken seriously. Objective: The aim of the literature study was to investigate whether a high meat intake may influence risk of endemic diseases in women. Results: The results suggest a link between a high intake of red and processed meat and endemic diseases in women. Correlations have been found between high meat intake and breast cancer, diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Exchanges from the red and processed meat to other sources of animal protein and vegetables have been shown to reduce the risk of endemic diseases. Discussion: Advice on diet should be an important prevention strategy on endemic diseases. Advice on diet for women should include a low intake of red and processed meat and a diet rich in fruits, vegetables and protein from sources other than red and processed meat. Conclusion: Clear and consistent dietary guidelines should be developed to help reduce the endemic diseases of the female population.

    Abstract [en]

Introduction: Insomnia is a major and growing public health problem for the adult population. Currently recommend medication and cognitive behavior therapy as treatment for the diagnosis, but no special recommendations are available for the purpose of preventing chronic insomnia och insomnia symptoms. Research shows that peoples living habits appear to be determining factors for their sleep quality, but it is still estimated that the area is relatively unexplored. Aim: This study investigate whether physical activity can prevent chronic insomnia and symptoms of insomnia in adults. Method: Systematic literature study in PubMed. Result: Physical activity was found to be associated with chronic insomnia and insomnia symptoms, and the association was affected by the body mass index (BMI) of the individual. Differences in intensity levels and physical activity were observed between the sexes and in different age groups. Discussion: The prescription of physical activity to individuals at risk for insomnia, or for treatment of those suffering from insomnia, represents a potential future public health strategy for the management and prevention of insomnia, however, cost-effectiveness of these strategies must be evaluated.

Nattfastans påverkan på äldres vikt: Ett pilotprojekt på särskilt boende2009Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Examensarbetets frågeställning berör användarnas medverkan i Requirements Engineering (RE).

    Abstract [en]

Obesity and mental illness are two global public health problems which causes not only comorbidity but also huge economic losses for societies. This systematic review was carried out with the purpose to investigate the occurrence of the association between obesity and mental illness. In this study mental illness includes anxiety, low mood and depression. Databases that were used were Lib Hub and PubMed. Ethical criteria were met and the used articles had been peer reviewed. Collected data were then analyzed and compared. The results showed that there is an association between obesity and mental illness, although there are some differences. A stronger association is found in women, in the lower educated, in people with more severe obesity and for some ethnic groups. Further research proposed to be more global and made with the same measurement techniques, to make sure that the results are generalizable and usable in different contexts.

    Abstract [sv]

Patients with prostate cancer and androgen deprivation therapy have increased risk of fractures: a study from the fractures and fall injuries in the elderly cohort (FRAILCO)2019In: Osteoporosis International, ISSN 0937-941X, E-ISSN 1433-2965, Vol. 30, no 1, p. 115-125Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Summary: Osteoporosis is a common complication of androgen deprivation therapy (ADT). In this large Swedish cohort study consisting of a total of nearly 180,000 older men, we found that those with prostate cancer and ADT have a significantly increased risk of future osteoporotic fractures. Introduction: Androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) in patients with prostate cancer is associated to increased risk of fractures. In this study, we investigated the relationship between ADT in patients with prostate cancer and the risk of incident fractures and non-skeletal fall injuries both compared to those without ADT and compared to patients without prostate cancer. Methods: We included 179,744 men (79.1 ± 7.9 years (mean ± SD)) from the Swedish registry to which national directories were linked in order to study associations regarding fractures, fall injuries, morbidity, mortality and medications. We identified 159,662 men without prostate cancer, 6954 with prostate cancer and current ADT and 13,128 men with prostate cancer without ADT. During a follow-up of approximately 270,300 patient-years, we identified 10,916 incident fractures including 4860 hip fractures. Results: In multivariable Cox regression analyses and compared to men without prostate cancer, those with prostate cancer and ADT had increased risk of any fracture (HR 95% CI 1.40 (1.28–1.53)), hip fracture (1.38 (1.20–1.58)) and MOF (1.44 (1.28–1.61)) but not of non-skeletal fall injury (1.01 (0.90–1.13)). Patients with prostate cancer without ADT did not have increased risk of any fracture (0.97 (0.90–1.05)), hip fracture (0.95 (0.84–1.07)), MOF (1.01 (0.92–1.12)) and had decreased risk of non-skeletal fall injury (0.84 (0.77–0.92)). Conclusions: Patients with prostate cancer and ADT is a fragile patient group with substantially increased risk of osteoporotic fractures both compared to patients without prostate cancer and compared to those with prostate cancer without ADT. We believe that this must be taken in consideration in all patients with prostate cancer already at the initiation of ADT.

Type 2 Diabetes and Risk of Hip Fractures and Non-Skeletal Fall Injuries in the Elderly - A Study from the Fractures and Fall Injuries in the Elderly Cohort (FRAILCO)2017In: Journal of Bone and Mineral Research, ISSN 0884-0431, E-ISSN 1523-4681, Vol. 32, no 3, p. 449-460Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Questions remain about whether the increased risk of fractures in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2DM) is related mainly to increased risk of falling or to bone-specific properties. The primary aim of this study was to investigate the risk of hip fractures and non-skeletal fall injuries in older men and women with and without T2DM. We included 429,313 individuals (80.8 ± 8.2 years (mean ± SD), 58% women) from the Swedish registry "Senior Alert" and linked the data to several nation-wide registers. We identified 79,159 individuals with T2DM (45% with insulin (T2DM-I), 41% with oral antidiabetics (T2DM-O), and 14% with no antidiabetic treatment (T2DM-none)), and 343,603 individuals without diabetes. During a follow-up of approximately 670,000 person-years we identified in total 36,132 fractures (15,572 hip fractures) and 20,019 non-skeletal fall injuries. In multivariable Cox-regression models where the reference group was patients without diabetes and the outcome was hip fracture, T2DM-I was associated with increased risk (adjusted Hazard Ratio (HR) [95% CI] 1.24 [1.16-1.32]), T2DM-O with unaffected risk (1.03 [0.97-1.11]) and T2DM-none with reduced risk (0.88 [0.79-0.98]). Both the diagnosis of T2DM-I (HR 1.22 [1.16-1.29]) and T2DM-O (HR 1.12 [1.06-1.18]) but not T2DM-none (1.07 [0.98-1.16]) predicted non-skeletal fall injury. The same pattern was seen regarding other fractures (any, upper arm, ankle and major osteoporotic fracture) but not for wrist fracture. Subset-analyses revealed that in men, the risk of hip fracture was only increased in those with T2DM-I but in women, both the diagnosis of T2DM-O and T2DM-I were related to increased hip fracture risk. In conclusion, the risk of fractures differs substantially among patients with T2DM and an increased risk of hip fracture was primarily seen in insulin-treated patients, while the risk of non-skeletal fall injury was consistently increased in T2DM with any diabetes medication. Dynamiskt tröskelvärde baserat på intresseområden för dead reckoning i racingspel2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Sjuksköterskors triagearbete på akutmottagningen: En litteraturöversikt2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Background: Nurses use triage guidelines to sort patients who seek care in the emergency department. It is a complex situation which demands critical thinking and medical knowledge. Nurses play an important role in patients’ experience of seeking care in the emergency department.

Aim: To gather and identify research which describes nurses’ triage work in the emergency department.

Method: The chosen method was a literature review. The data consisted of nine qualitative and three quantitative studies.

Results: Four themes were identified through the analysis. These where Nurses’ way of working with triage, Nurses’ work related relationships in their triage work, Nurses’ work environment in their triage work and Nurses’ attitudes to patients in their triage work.

Conclusions: If nurses work together they can strengthen the profession and be more confident in their triage decisions. Nurses need to have good self-knowledge. If good health care is to be conducted, nurses need the administration to provide the right conditions. The study suggest that more research is needed, which can develop nurses’ role in the triage work in the emergency department.

IT-stöd för distansutbildning2003Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Emergent quantum mechanics: David Bohm Centennial perspectives2019In: Entropy, ISSN 1099-4300, E-ISSN 1099-4300, Vol. 21, no 2, article id 113Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Emergent quantum mechanics (EmQM) explores the possibility of an ontology for quantum mechanics. The resurgence of interest in realist approaches to quantum mechanics challenges the standard textbook view, which represents an operationalist approach. The possibility of an ontological, i.e., realist, quantum mechanics was first introduced with the original de Broglie-Bohm theory, which has also been developed in another context as Bohmian mechanics. This Editorial introduces a Special Issue featuring contributions which were invited as part of the David Bohm Centennial symposium of the EmQM conference series (www.emqm17.org). Questions directing the EmQM research agenda are: Is reality intrinsically random or fundamentally interconnected? Is the universe local or nonlocal? Might a radically new conception of reality include a form of quantum causality or quantum ontology? What is the role of the experimenter agent in ontological quantum mechanics? The Special Issue also includes research examining ontological propositions that are not based on the Bohm-type nonlocality. These include, for example, local, yet time-symmetric, ontologies, such as quantum models based upon retrocausality. This Editorial provides topical overviews of thirty-one contributions which are organized into seven categories to provide orientation.

The Neural Correlates of Aesthetic Appreciation2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In everyday life, people all over the world come across art in some way, and the question of what constitutes an aesthetic experience has long been an interesting topic for humanistic and philosophical studies. Recently, neuroscientists have begun pinning down the neural correlates of artistic production and appreciation, sparking a whole new subfield within cognitive neuroscience, known as neuroaesthetics. Most studies have focused on the relationship between brain mechanisms and the appreciation of visual art, which has shown to be a meaningful and interesting complement to empirical aesthetics and psychology. By means of several modern measuring instruments and tools such as functional magnetic resonance imaging and magnetoencephalography, neuroscientists have successfully been able to observe specific brain activity in relation to specific aesthetic activities, such as viewing paintings or artworks. In this thesis, the supposed neural correlates of aesthetic appreciation are examined through critical investigations, where evidence from some of the more outstanding studies is reviewed and compared, as well as the different problems and complexities that the field is dealing with. Furthermore, the evolutionary history of aesthetic experiences and philosophical theories on aesthetics are also examined, as well as how certain neural deficits affect our cognitive and emotional abilities to appreciate art. The findings demonstrated in this thesis show that aesthetic appreciation is a multifaceted phenomenon, depending on specific neural interactions between bottom-up sensory processing areas, reward-related subcortical structures and top-down cortical processing areas, that all together form the experience of enjoying artworks across different sensory modalities.
