    Abstract [en]

    This research evaluates the impact of competition from unregistered firms on R&D investment by formal firms in emerging economies by considering their industrial sector and institutional factors, such as intellectual property rights. We performed a study using the propensity score matching approach and the World Bank Enterprise Survey of 16 Latin American emerging economies. We observed that the R&D investment response of formal firms varies according to the typology of industrial sectors. Supplier-dominated industries reduce investments in R&D when confronted with the informal sector. However, science-based, specialized suppliers and scale-intensive industries do not alter their investments. In addition, the level of intellectual property (e.g., IPRI) modifies the effect of the informal sector on R&D investment. Formal firms reduce their investments in R&D when the IPRI environment is underdeveloped. This reduction does not occur in highly developed IPRI environments. We also discuss the finding's theoretical and practical implications and suggest avenues for future research.

    Abstract [en]

    Purpose – The understanding of the later stage (i.e. the exploitation phase) in the new product development (NPD) process by companies from emerging markets is underdeveloped. The purpose of this paper is to address this lack and, by drawing upon a dataset from Turkish firms, explore how different factors affect the exploitation phase of the NPD process.

    Design/methodology/approach – Multiple hierarchical regression analyses were carried out on a sample of 671 Turkish firms operating in five industries (i.e. information and communication technologies, biomedical, machinery, chemical and plastic, and food and beverage) in the Izmir region (Turkey) to test the hypotheses.

    Findings–Results reveal major differences regarding human capital, leadership, marketing capabilities, and business and institutional networks in terms of the commercialization of newly developed products in domestic and international markets. Originality/value – By focusing on the exploitation stage, this paper extents the growing research efforts to study the NPD process of companies in emerging economies other than China by using primary data from Turkey.

    Abstract [en]

    This paper aims to verify the relationships that may exist between knowledge absorptive capacity (ACAP), innovation performance, and organisational performance in Brazilian firms. A sample of 111 firms from Southern Brazil was surveyed and PLSSEM was used to test the theoretical hypotheses. The relevance of ACAP for innovation and organisational performance is supported. The research also shows that realised ACAP has more influence on innovation performance compared with potential ACAP. Some guidelines for furthering ACAP models suitable for developing countries are provided as well. The findings are a good reference for practitioners as they identify possible actions which can enhance ACAP and thereby contribute to improving innovativeness and performance. This research complements earlier studies which called for the exploration of the role of ACAP on innovation performance and firm’s competitiveness in developing countries, and it opens new avenues for multidisciplinary research.

    Against the background of knowledge as an ever more important strategic resource in the current environment, as well as demographic developments which will soon lead to a shortage of expert knowledge, the practice of knowledge management (KM) calls for an even stronger consideration. Knowledge is the critical asset that will help organizations master present and future organizational challenges. This applies to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in particular. Therefore, the aim of this chapter is to discuss KM in SMEs by first defining this category of firms in quantitative and qualitative terms. Once this understanding is established, we turn to the current body of knowledge regarding KM in SMEs and discuss both the benefits and challenges ahead. We then address how to apply knowledge management in SMEs. The chapter concludes with a number of promising research avenues intended to develop further the study of KM in SMEs.

    In environments that are characterized by skill shortage, knowledge retention should be a key activity. Our understanding of this knowledge practice, however, is underdeveloped. The purpose of this chapter is to contribute to the further development of this field. The authors are interested in studying how smaller firms approach the retention of critical knowledge. Semi-structured interviews with organization members of five smaller Austrian firms operating in the building and construction industry were conducted. The findings presented in this chapter advance the limited understanding of knowledge retention in general and regarding smaller businesses. They also contribute to the further development of the study of knowledge management in the building and construction sector. Based on the study's findings, suitable measures to better manage the process of knowledge retention in smaller firms are derived. These measures may be useful for smaller firms operating in similar industries as well.

    Abstract [en]

    Purpose

    This study aims to contribute to the understanding of knowledge risk management (KRM) and a range of related knowledge management practices in the public sector through a case study conducted in a Swedish municipality.

    Design/methodology/approach

    A single case study was conducted in a Swedish municipality involving two offices. Data were collected through an online survey, group interviews and group exercises involving members of the offices who represented different functions, roles and age groups.

    Findings

    The findings underline the need for a systematic approach to KRM for being in a position to continuously deliver the municipality’s products and services, specifically against the knowledge challenges ahead. In addition, the authors identified a number of internal and external factors that are challenging KRM.

    Research limitations/implications

    Data were collected from a single case study, to generalize the findings future research should study additional local governments.

    Practical implications

    A holistic KRM framework is proposed intended to help managers tackle present and future challenges in the public sector.

    Originality/value

    The study contributes to the underdeveloped field of KRM by providing insights into KRM and KRM-related activities found in a Swedish municipality.

    The term “big data” has been discussed often in recent years so it is high time for us to determine the current state of knowledge on big data and the benefits and challenges that its applications may bring to individuals, companies, or the society at large. We argue that such work will allow for greater dissemination of results across both academic research and practitioners. The determination of the body of knowledge will help to systematize research, whereas practitioners will get insights into the pros and cons of using big data, which in turn can provide the basis for the improved use of big data or its first-time application, respectively. Based on a systematic review consisting of 87 papers, this chapter proposes a number of future research avenues that can be used to organize the study of big data. The future avenues and the determination of the current body of knowledge about big data are considered the main contributions of this chapter. Next, we briefly discuss the term “big data.” Then the insights into the methodology are provided. After that, the results are presented. This is followed by a discussion about the possible future research opportunities. The chapter terminates with final remarks and conclusions.

    Organizational resilience deals with companies’  and organizations’ ability to survive, or more positively stated, to maintain their vitality in a changing world that constantly requires adaptation. This chapter introduces and describes the concept of organizational resilience and presents an overview of the book.

    A resilient company or organization is in the chapter defi ned as the capacity to use its technical, economic and social resources in order to develop long-term skills and competencies, in an efficient, reliable and flexible manner, and in a way it could manage challenges and exploit opportunities. This definition is developed both by acknowledging previous defi nitions and also by using the theoretical framework of the book consisting of evolutionary theory, complexity theory and practice theory of management.

     In this chapter, a general theoretical framework of the book is presented. The framework builds on various sources of literature and in particular on an organic view on economic and organizational development. Using the classical concepts of variation, selection and retention, organizational resilience is seen as the capacity of a company to over time become a selected variation in the marketplace.

    Furthermore‚  the framework builds on findings from complexity theory that highlights the centrality of unforeseen events and unanticipated consequences. Such events and consequences can be both positive and negative (serendipities as well as severe challenges). The chapter ends in a new model that emphasizes the importance for a resilient organization to find an adequate balance between reliability,efficiency and change capacity.

    Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to describe and analyze how physicians and nurses strategicallyemploy the managerial logic.Design/methodology/approach – A qualitative case study incorporating interviews and observations.Findings – Neither physicians nor nurses were prone to strategically employing the managerial logic.However, when doing so nurses were able to acknowledge the legitimacy of managerial impact on practice,whereas the physicians were not. Consequently, physicians might find other, more subtle, ways tostrategically employ the managerial logic.Originality/value – This paper argues for and makes explicit the applicability of qualitative methods inorder to delineate actors’ strategic use of available and accessible institutional logics, the conditions for suchusage, as well as the multiplicity of actors’ interactions that needs to be taken into account when conductingqualitative data analysis of such occurrences. By the merits of the qualitative research approach utilized inthis study, novel insights concerning the strategic use of the managerial logic in the everyday work ofphysicians and nurses were obtainable. These insights emphasize the necessity of acknowledging situational,organizational and institutional context, incorporating inter-professional power discrepancies and relationsvis-à-vis managers.

    Purpose: The purpose of this study is to understand the growth of a quasi-market industry and the distribution of capital generated by the industry´s private companies. Methodology: Using a longitudinal case study approach, descriptive panel data and a regression analysis highlight the development of medium-sized Swedish companies within the personal care assistance (PA) industry. Findings: This study demonstrates a quasi-market growth cycle and how the hierarchical organizational dimension explains key figure differences between the business types of independent firms (undivisionalized) and conglomerate subsidiaries. Originality: This study is the first to reveal that quasi-market conditions open up for broad redistributions of capital to non-related conglomerate-owned industries. Thereby, non-intended industries receive public funding advantages.

    Abstract [en]

    This special issue uses the occasion of the centenary of the Whitley Commission Reports to illuminate the contemporary crisis in public service industrial relations from a historical perspective. In all six countries studiedBritain, France, Germany, Italy, Sweden and the USApublic service employment is labour intensive and quantitatively significant in the overall economy. Public services have also been major targets of neoliberal reforms, starting in the UK and the USA at the turn of the 1980s and in the other countries about a decade later. In addition, the relatively high union density and the political dimension of public services and public union strategies have been major targets of new public management and more latterly austerity. However, the regressive period has had a differential impact in different countries. In the liberal market economies of the UK and the USA, the neoliberal turn has destabilised traditional patterns of public sector industrial relations to greatest effect. While in the more coordinated market economies, traditional arrangements and values have been more resistant to austerity and neoliberal reforms. We attempt to shed light on these differential impacts through a critical analysis of the historical evolution of public sector industrial relations in each country.

    Abstract [en]

    One way of gaining knowledge about organizational resilience is to studying business leaders who have contributed to create companies and business models with long endurance. In this chapter three successful Swedish business leaders are described and analyzed in accordance with the theoretical framework of the book. Some important results emerge from the analysis. First, an emphasis on creating decentralized organizations based on an active followership and trust is revealed. Second, the business leaders in question have shown the courage and capability to develop strategies even if they did not correspond to at the moment popular beliefs in society, and third the business leaders have shown the ability to find creative solution to situations they did not foresee, which included abandoning a previous strategy (i.e. fl exible adaption).

    Good to Great by Jim Collins and colleagues (2001) is one of the most influential management books in the last decades. In this chapter, a critical analysis of the book is made using the framework developed in the book. This is made through an analysis of the fate of Circuit City, one of the heralded companies in Good to Great. The critique contains displaying methodological flaws and the one-sidedness in  Good to Great where simple and timeless business models fanatically applied is seen as a general recipe for success. On the contrary, the fate of Circuit City demonstrates the need of developing a strong financial base, efficient operations, good stakeholder relations as well as the ability to alter existing business models and to develop new models.

    The construction of professional identity of an entrepreneur involves many factors. In this chapter, the case study of a Chinese female immigrant entrepreneur in Sweden illustrates the complexity of professional identity which intertwines with the gender identity and the cultural identity in all levels from personal, professional and socio-cultural. The methods of participant observation and discourse analysis are used. The results reflect the impacts of gender and culture factors in the construction and communication of professional identity, which can contribute to the integration process of Chinese immigrants in Sweden.

It is shown how SMEs can benefit from applying these three archetypes and what are the preconditions for applying them in the best way.

    The purpose of knowledge management is innovation. However, this study proposes that the existence of knowledge management in the knowledge-worker's work environment can nurture the overall satisfaction of knowledge worker. As the ultimate purpose of knowledge management is innovation performance, therefore, the satisfaction of knowledge worker as an outcome of knowledge management should be greater innovation performance. Consequently, the purpose of this study is to test the mediating role of satisfaction of knowledge worker between knowledge management and innovation. The study collected the data from 306 knowledge workers (engineers and managers) of software houses from Pakistan. The SmartPLS 3 Version 2.7 software that uses the PLS-SEM (Partial Least Square-Structural Equation Modelling) technique was used. The results indicate that satisfaction of knowledge worker mediates between two knowledge management processes (knowledge creation and knowledge sharing) and innovation significantly. However, it does not mediate between knowledge utilization and innovation significantly.

    This paper presents a case study that addresses factors that influence unlearning at the individual level. These factors were studied in a public sector organization located in a country characterized by high power distance. The case organization went through a change process of a daily routine caused by the introduction of a new technology. Data were collected through semi structured face-to-face interviews with shop floor agents in the state of Santa Catarina/Brazil. The results highlight the strong influence of the support of formal leaders on the unlearning process of individuals, suggesting that managers operating in a high power distance environment have to make bigger efforts compared to their counterparts in small power distance settings to promote unlearning processes of employees. The study advances the limited body of knowledge regarding unlearning in general and unlearning at the individual level in particular. It also stresses the influence of the national cultural dimension on the unlearning process of individuals.

    Purpose – This paper addresses the phenomenon of venture capital firms which are also family businesses(VCFBs). The purpose of this paper is to explore and understand the phenomenon of VCFB by answering thefollowing questions: What are the features of professionalization in VCFBs? And, how do professionalizationand types of family businesses explain the strategies and governance of VCFBs?Design/methodology/approach – As an explorative case study, it maps the Swedish venture capital (VC)industry and compares two VCFBs and their business investments with regard to strategy and governance.Findings – By suggesting two major configurations, the study explains how family business developmentand levels of professionalization relate to differences in VCFBs’ strategies, which in turn, affect theirgovernance. The personal VCFB features active owners who personally take responsibility roles and stronglyfocus on customers and relationships. The administrative VCFB strongly focuses on predetermined financialmetrics, high ethical awareness among board members, and ongoing interplay between the active familyboard members and minority shareholders.Research limitations/implications – The study was conducted in Sweden and concerns Swedish VCFBs.The paper contributes to the literature by combining the two currently separate research streams, i.e. familybusiness and VC, highlighting the importance and consequences of family ownership in VC businesses.Practical implications – The present study provides stock market investors and stock analysts with adeeper understanding of VCFBs’ strategy incentives. By identifying the kind of VCFB and its relation tostrategy, more reasonable assessments and analyses of the VCFBs’ actions will be possible. Family firms willingto accept VC-finance should consider the type of VC and the potential consequences of family ownership.Originality/value – This study is the first to classify VC firms as family businesses. Moreover, it shows thefeatures of professionalization in VCFBs by suggesting a set of configurations.

    Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to investigate the verbal content and its impact on panel-basedbusiness advice meetings (springboards) for family business owners and startup entrepreneurs. Further,the study also investigates how panel-based advising assists entrepreneurship.Design/methodology/approach – The investigated springboards concern family business owners whorun established firms and startup entrepreneurs who are applying for venture capital. Data from 12 differentspringboards are collected and studied by content analysis.Findings – The outcomes indicate that advising is more constructive for the family business owners than forthe startup entrepreneurs. This can mainly be explained by the rational screening that follows the businessplan concept and group dynamics which appear in these meetings.Research limitations/implications – The study was conducted in Sweden and concerns Swedish familybusiness owners and startup entrepreneurs. It reveals different speech patterns that appear during organizedadvice-giving and its implications depending on the type of entrepreneur.Practical implications – This study provides potential input to change the institutional practice ofpanel-based business advice, which will likely support entrepreneurs in their business development andnetwork building.Originality/value – This study is the first to investigate the verbal content in panel-based business advicefor family business owners.     The study of corporate governance is dominated by quantitative research and tends to focus on large listed companies businesses. As a response to this situation, this chapter examines how corporate governance is practiced in smaller businesses. It reports findings based on semi-structured interviews conducted with executive staff of smaller privately held firms from the Rhine Valley region. More precisely parts of both Austria (Province of Vorarlberg) and the Principality of Liechtenstein were covered. In total, twenty-five individuals were involved. The findings particularly emphasize the concept of relational governance as a more appropriate governance approach in small firms. Thereby the chapter suggests that the relational governance approach needs to be extended by considering employees and their contribution to governance practices and company development as well. The chapter´s findings may help managing directors of smaller firms to better understand and exploit the benefits of different governance mechanisms in their efforts to cope with different business challenges ahead. The findings may also be used by policy makers helping them to develop improved corporate governance codes and best practice recommendations. To sum up, the chapter provides fresh insights into the practice of governance in smaller firms taken from a practitioner’s perspective. Additionally, it offers the opportunity of expanding our understanding of the topic in different parts of the world.

    While the scholarly focus has shifted from strategic alliance formation to alliance performance and thus alliance outcome, the process that leads to a particular outcome: alliance success or alliance failure remains indeterminate. Given their high failure rate, this study aims to identify factors that contribute to an alliance failure to better understand the strategic alliance management process to help alliances survive. Purposefully, the Volvo-Renault alliance break-up is investigated. A Process Model for International Strategic Alliance Lifecycle is developed. The findings establish that post-formation, the strategic alliance process necessitates managing interactions among: partners’ objectives; partners’ resource contribution; access to partner’s network; and alliance performance. However, for an alliance to sustain, learning and assessment must be an integral part. Learning and assessment are critical strategic inputs that serve as ‘binding forces’, and as an ‘alert mechanism’ whereby timely corrective managerial actions are triggered in favor of an alliance sustainability and vice versa.

    What's mine is yours. An increasing number of people are participating in sharing and exchanging information, knowledge, data and goods. As research addressing the so-called ‘sharing economy’ is still in its infancy, this article aims to shed light on it. To do this, a qualitative research approach comprising guided interviews with 14 companies from Germany, Austria and Switzerland provides detailed insights into different aspects of the sharing economy phenomenon. Our results make a direct contribution to sharing economy research, especially regarding the new business models of start-ups. Here, we find a clear difference between the relevance of economic and social orientation. The latter appears to be in higher demand among customers than entrepreneurs. The increasingly digitalized environment has led to a changed living situation characterized by urbanity, openness to new solutions, changed working situations and new mindsets. All of these aspects drive the sharing economy. The results of this paper are summarized in a framework highlighting the requirements, drivers and goals of the sharing economy. Considering the limited research in this field, the developed framework is a strong basis for discussion, critique and/or support of future research.

    Our purpose is to understand the process of ‘going private’ decisions in family firms by applying a socioemotional wealth (SEW) perspective, specified in the following research questions: how do socioemotional wealth considerations influence owning families’ decisions to delist their publicly-listed companies? How do socioemotional wealth considerations change after the delisting of a firm? Based on case studies of two family firms, we elaborate upon the balancing of socioemotional and financial wealth considerations by the family owners, the assessment of which changes over time. Ultimately, we propose that the experiences from being listed can lead to the reevaluation of financial, as well as socioemotional, wealth considerations. By delisting, the companies reclaim independence and control, and the identity as a private family-owned firm becomes once again pronounced. We develop the SEW-perspective by viewing the decision to delist as a mixed gamble, in that owning families have to weigh personal and financial losses against SEW gains, thereby indicating how SEW-considerations change over time. We find that owning families are willing to sacrifice current SEW, accepting current financial losses for prospective increased SEW. Additionally, in this study we extend the argument that decisions to leave the stock market are tradeoffs between competing factors.

    Purpose

    The purpose of this paper is to describe and analyze conditions that influence how employees engage in healthcare quality improvement (QI) work.

    Design/methodology/approach

    Qualitative case study based on interviews (n=27) and observations (n=10).

    Findings

    The main conditions that influence how employees engage in healthcare QI work are professions, work structures and working relationships. These conditions can both prevent and facilitate healthcare QI. Professions and work structures may cement existing institutional logics and thus prevent employees from engaging in healthcare QI work. However, attempts to align QI with professional logics, together with work structures that empower employees, can make these conditions increase employee engagement, which can be accomplished through positive working relationships that foster institutional work, which bridge different competing institutional logics, making it possible to overcome barriers that professions and work structures may constitute.

    Practical implications

    Understanding the conditions that influence how employees engage in healthcare QI work will make initiatives more likely to succeed.

    Originality/value

    Healthcare QI has mainly been studied from an implementer perspective, and employees have either been neglected or seen as passive resisters. Weak employee perspectives make healthcare QI research incomplete. In our research, healthcare QI work is studied closely at the actor level to understand healthcare QI from an employee perspective.

    Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to describe and analyze nurses’ perceptions and evaluations of healthcare developmental work after the introduction of Lean and Six Sigma and, how nurses aspire to maintain a high reliability organization (HRO).

    Design/methodology/approach – Nurses’ roles and the way they respond to new efficiency and quality working methods are crucial. Underlying themes were analyzed from in-depth, semi-structured interviews with (n 17) nurses at two Swedish hospitals.

    Findings – The nurses perceived that Lean worked better than Six Sigma, because of its bottom-up approach, and its similarities with nurses’ well-known work qualities. Nurses coordinate patients care, collaborate in teams and take leadership roles. To maintain high reliability and to become quality developers, nurses need stable resources. However, professional’s logic collides with management’s logic. Expert knowledge (top-down approach) without nurses’ local knowledge (bottom-up approach) can lead to problems. Healthcare quality methods are standardized but must be used with flexibility. However, HROs ensue not only from method quality but also from work attitudes, commitment and continuous work-improvement.

    Practical implications – Management can support personnel in developmental work with: continuous education, training, teamwork, knowledge sharing and cooperation. Authoritarian method structures that limit the healthcare professionals’ autonomy should be softened or abandoned.

    Originality/value – The study uses theoretical concepts from HROs, which were developed for unexpected events, to explain the consequences of implementing Lean and Six Sigma in healthcare.

Design/methodology/approach – Using a neuropsychologic analogy, we assume that the development of smart cities corresponds to the development of a sensorial or even a nervous system for cities based on their Structural Capital, and the development of City Intellectual Capital (CIC) corresponds to a further phase of the cities’ mind development. We propose a practical framework that combines the concepts of city nervous system and city mind. It can be used as an instrument for project management. In this model, sensorial data -associated with the implementation of cities’ sensorial systems - should naturally contribute with open data to the development of higher abstract functions that in turn supports the creation of CIC. Findings –This paper highlights the interrelations between IC (especially its structural component) and SC and their synergic capability of improving both a smart city’s competitiveness and sustainability, and by this illustrates the benefits of combining both concepts in a common theoretical framework. Research limitations/implications – Given the paper’s theoretical nature, the empirical validation of the proposed framework is missing. This limitation will be addressed in forthcoming empirical research. Originality and implications – By proposing a framework that combines the concepts of SC and IC, the paper contributes to theory development regarding the strategic management of cities and the application of IC.

    This article studies interprofessional barriers between nurses and physicians in the context of quality improvementwork. A total of 17 nurses and 10 physicians were interviewed at 2 hospitals in Sweden. The study uncovered anumber of barriers relating to both the relative status of each group and their defined areas of responsibility.
