    Abstract [en]

    Context

    Software metrics play a significant role in many areas in the life-cycle of software including forecasting defects and foretelling stories regarding maintenance, cost, etc. through predictive analysis. Many studies have found code metrics correlated to each other at such a high level that such correlated code metrics are considered redundant, which implies it is enough to keep track of a single metric from a list of highly correlated metrics.

    Objective

    Software is developed incrementally over a period. Traditionally, code metrics are measured cumulatively as cumulative sum or running sum. When a code metric is measured based on the values from individual revisions or commits without consolidating values from past revisions, indicating the natural development of software, this study identifies such a type of measure as organic. Density and average are two other ways of measuring metrics. This empirical study focuses on whether measurement types influence correlations of code metrics.

    Method

    To investigate the objective, this empirical study has collected 24 code metrics classified into four categories, according to the measurement types of the metrics, from 11,874 software revisions (i.e., commits) of 21 open source projects from eight well-known organizations. Kendall’s τ -B is used for computing correlations. To determine whether there is a significant difference between cumulative and organic metrics, Mann-Whitney U test, Wilcoxon signed rank test, and paired-samples sign test are performed.

    Results

    The cumulative metrics are found to be highly correlated to each other with an average coefficient of 0.79. For corresponding organic metrics, it is 0.49. When individual correlation coefficients between these two measure types are compared, correlations between organic metrics are found to be significantly lower (with p <0.01) than cumulative metrics. Our results indicate that the cumulative nature of metrics makes them highly correlated, implying cumulative measurement is a major source of collinearity between cumulative metrics. Another interesting observation is that correlations between metrics from different categories are weak.

    Conclusions

    Results of this study reveal that measurement types may have a significant impact on the correlations of code metrics and that transforming metrics into a different type can give us metrics with low collinearity. These findings provide us a simple understanding how feature transformation to a different measurement type can produce new non-collinear input features for predictive models.

    Abstract [en]

    Context: Technical debt is known to impact maintainability of software. As source code files grow in size, maintainability becomes more challenging. Therefore, it is expected that the density of technical debt in larger files would be reduced for the sake of maintainability. Objective: This exploratory study investigates whether a newly introduced metric ‘technical debt density trend’ helps to better understand and explain the evolution of technical debt. The ‘technical debt density trend’ metric is the slope of the line of two successive ‘technical debt density’ measures corresponding to the ‘lines of code’ values of two consecutive revisions of a source code file. Method: This study has used 11,822 commits or revisions of 4,013 Java source files from 21 open source projects. For the technical debt measure, SonarQube tool is used with 138 code smells. Results: This study finds that ‘technical debt density trend’ metric has interesting characteristics that make it particularly attractive to understand the pattern of accrual and repayment of technical debt by breaking down a technical debt measure into multiple components, e.g., ‘technical debt density’ can be broken down into two components showing mean density corresponding to revisions that accrue technical debt and mean density corresponding to revisions that repay technical debt. The use of ‘technical debt density trend’ metric helps us understand the evolution of technical debt with greater insights.

    Utilization of cancer-specific genome-scale metabolic models in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinomas for biomarkers discovery and patient stratification2019Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 40 credits / 60 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

    Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinomas initiates in the exocrine part of the pancreatic tissue and represents over 90% of all the pancreatic cancers. Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinomas are extremely aggressive and are one of the most lethal malignant neoplasms. The five-year relative survival is currently less than 8% of the patients. The main reason behind such a low survival rate is that most of the cases are diagnosed at a very late stage. Although substantial advancement in pancreatic cancer research has been done, there has not been any remarkable significance in the mortality to incidence ratio. This is mainly a result of the scarce of early diagnostic characteristic symptoms and reliable biomarkers besides the unresponsiveness to the treatments. In this study, transcriptomics and proteomics data were used for the construction of a genome-scale metabolic model that was used in the detection of altered metabolic pathways, genes and metabolites using gene set analysis and reporter metabolites analysis. As a result, altered metabolic pathways in PDAC tumours were detected, including the lipid metabolism-related pathways as well as carbohydrate metabolism, in addition to nucleotide metabolism, which are considered as potential candidates for diagnostic biomarkers. Moreover, classification of the filtered DIRAC tightly regulated network genes, based on their prognostic values from the pathology atlas, detected two groups of PDAC patients that have significantly different survival outcome. The differential expression analysis of the two groups showed that six of the eight genes used in clustering were showing significantly altered expression, which suggests their importance in PDAC patient stratification. As a conclusion, this study shows the valuable outcome of the GEM reconstructions and other systems-level analyses for elucidating the underlying altered metabolic mechanisms of PDAC. Such analyses results should provide more insights into the biomarker discovery and developing of potential treatments.

    Sverige har de senaste åren konfronterats med ett ökat mottagande av ensamkommande flyktingbarn. Vid situationer som denna är det viktigt för myndigheter att fatta rättvisa beslut med rätt beslutsstödsystem.

    Denna studie inriktar sig på en undersökning hos Migrationsverket samt två kommuner där forskningsfrågan som tillämpades var ”Hur används beslutsstödsystem vad gäller placering av ensamkommandebarn i kommuner?”. Metoden som användes var kvalitativ data erhölls genom litteratursökning samt intervjuer. Studien har pågående under flera faser tillämpat Zachmans ramverk som ett hjälpmedel för att analysera erhållen data samt för att skapa intervjufrågor och genomföra intervjuer. En beslutsmodell och Zachmans ramverk har applicerats på respondenternas svar för att kartlägga respondenterna enligt modellerna. Resultatet har varit en önskan av en ökad effektivitet vad gäller beslutsfattande för kommuner och mottagandet av denna information från Migrationsverket. Idag uppfattar kommunerna sina beslutprocesser som manuella. Utifrån ett Business Intelligence (BI) perspektiv är slutsatsen av denna studie att Migrationsverket samt kommunerna behöver tillämpa ett dynamiskt samspel vad gäller beslutsfattande, integrering, mottagande av information och hantering av denna information för att fatta beslut.

    Denna studie kan användas som grund för framtida forskning där syftet är att applicera Business Intelligence (BI) behov i en verksamhet genom en tillämpning av Zachmans ramverk.

    Abstract

    Sepsis is a serious clinical condition that is characterized by a systemic inflammatory response syndrome resulting from a known or suspected infection. The major clinical symptoms involve an abnormal WBC count, elevated body temperature, respiration and pulse rate. Reported cases with high mortality rate range between 13 - 20 million. In order to treat Sepsis, the detection of bacteria in blood culture is extremely crucial. Treating patients with broad spectrum antibiotics is usually related to adverse effects, drug resistance, increased mortality, and high cost. In the past decades, researches had detected that E. coli and S. aureus are the major role players that cause sepsis. These microbes are molecularly tested by methods like MALDI TOF, FISH and Microarrays.  

    In this analysis, DNA fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) assessment for the identification of S. aureus, one of the most frequent blood pathogens, was optimized in the labs of Högskolan i Skövde. As a result, the growth of S. aureus was observed very carefully, optimizing the FISH procedure for gram positive bacteria was done and the sensitivity, stability and specificity of the DNA probe were examined under variant conditions like the continuous decrease in the bacteria cells number and utilizing a mixture of different types of bacteria cells.

    Utvecklingen av informationssystem utförs vanligen med hjälp av en systemutvecklingsmodell där kravhanteringsaktivitetens (Requirements Engineering – RE-processen) syfte är att samla in och bearbeta kundens alla krav på systemet. Den slutliga produkten av RE-processen är en kravspecifikation där alla kraven gällande exempelvis systemets funktionalitet, syfte etc skall specificeras.

    Det är inte alltid självklart vilken information som en kravspecifikation bör innehålla då detta dokument kan för både kunden och leverantören ses som ett kvitto på vad som skall utvecklas och hur det skall gå till. Dokumentet skall nämligen fungera som ett underlag för de så kallade implementations- och designaktiviteterna i systemutvecklingsarbetet samt fungera som ett underlag för diskussion och kontrakt mellan leverantör och kund gällande utvecklingen av informationssystemet. Kravspecifikationen bör därför innehålla komplett och förståelig information så att detta dokument uppfyller sina syften. Därmed är det inte enkelt att veta vilken information som en kravspecifikation bör innehålla för att detta dokument skall uppfylla ovannämnda egenskaper. Då kravspecifikationen skall upprättas kan ett ramverk eller en standard tillämpas som förespråkar att viss information skall ingå.

    Det ramverk som är upprättat i detta examensarbete innehåller den information som jag anser bör ingå i en kravspecifikation. Utifrån detta ramverk finns det viss information som jag anser att en kravspecifikation bör innehålla just ur kontraktsynpunkt. Denna information är följande:

    We prove a decomposition theorem for hesitant fuzzy sets, which states that every typical hesitant fuzzy set on a set can be represented by a well-structured family of fuzzy sets on that set. This decomposition is expressed by the novel concept of hesitant fuzzy set associated with a family of hesitant fuzzy sets, in terms of newly defined families of their cuts. Our result supposes the first representation theorem of hesitant fuzzy sets in the literature. Other related representation results are proven. We also define two novel extension principles that extend crisp functions to functions that map hesitant fuzzy sets into hesitant fuzzy sets.

    Procedurell generering innebär att innehåll genereras automatiskt istället för att skapas för hand. En form av procedurell generering är att inte bara generera innehåll en gång, utan även fortsätta uppdatera innehållet allteftersom tiden går. Ett intressant användningsområde för detta är artificiella ekosystem, där växtligheten hela tiden uppdateras dynamiskt baserat på förhållandena i världen. Detta kan skapa mer variation och dynamik i dataspelsvärldar men kan också användas för att skapa spel med fokus på ekosystemet, exempelvis med ett pedagogiskt syfte. Målet med detta arbete är därför att utveckla en modell för simulering av artificiella ekosystem i dataspel, där systemet uppdateras dynamiskt. Arbetet utvärderas genom mätning av modellens tids- och minneseffektivitet, samt en diskussion kring vilken nivå av realism den uppehåller.

    Utvärderingen visar att modellen kan behöva anpassas till lokala behov, men att den ur ett generellt perspektiv anses vara rimlig som grund för ett artificiellt ekosystem i ett dataspel.

    Abstract [en]

    Complex decision-making is a prominent aspect of requirements engineering and the need for improved decision support for requirements engineers has been identified by a number of authors. A first step toward better decision support in requirements engineering is to understand decision-makers’ complex decision situations. To gain a holistic perspective of the decision situation from a decision-makers perspective, a decision situation framework has been created. The framework evolved through a literature analysis of decision support systems and decision-making theories. The decision situation of requirements engineers has been studied at Ericsson Microwave Systems and is described in this thesis. Aspects of decision situations are decision matters, decision-making activities, and decision processes. Another aspect of decision situations is the factors that affect the decision-maker. A number of interrelated factors have been identified. Each factor consists of problems and these are related to decision-making theories. The consequences of this for requirements engineering decision support, represented as a list that consists of desirable high-level characteristics, are also discussed.

In this paper we present two requirements engineering decision processes and their decision-making activities and decision matters. These were identified in a case study conducted at Ericsson Microwave Systems. We also discuss the consequences of these for requirements engineering decision support.

    Abstract [en]

    Complex decision-making is a prominent aspect of requirements engineering (RE) and the need for improved decision support for RE decision-makers has been identified by a number of authors in the research literature. Decision-supporting features and qualities can be integrated in RE tools. Thus, there is a need to evaluate the decision-supporting capabilities of RE tools. In this paper, we introduce a summative, criteria-based evaluation method termed DESCRY, which purpose is to investigate to what extent RE tools have decision-supporting capabilities. The criteria and their related questions are empirically as well as theoretically grounded.

    Abstract [en]

    Intresset för e-tjänster och affärsmodeller har ökat det senaste decenniet, med anledning av Internets snabba utspridning och att allt mer webbaserade organisationer vuxit fram. Det råder dock viss missuppfattning över koncepten, vilket kan härledas från de många olika definitioner som finns för både affärsmodeller och e-tjänster. I detta arbete ses e-tjänster som webbaserade tjänster som erbjuds genom användningen av Internet. För affärsmodeller finns två inriktningar: (traditionella) affärsmodeller och e-affärsmodeller. Många blandar ihop dessa och gör därmed ingen skillnad på begreppen. I detta arbete ses en e-affärsmodell som en affärsmodell som används för webbaserade organisationer, där Internet används som teknik. Det finns mycket litteratur om affärsmodeller. Dock behandlar den i mindre omfattning affärsmodeller för e-tjänster, och det finns följaktligen ingen riktlinje över hur en affärsmodell anpassad för e-tjänster ska se ut. Detta arbete granskar litteratur inom området e-tjänster och affärsmodeller för att analysera vilka konsekvenser e-tjänsters karaktäristik har för utformning av affärsmodeller anpassade för e-tjänster. Resultatet av arbetet är 12 komponenter som affärsmodeller anpassade för e-tjänster bör innehålla.

    Sjuksköterskornas omvårdnadsdokumentation skall fungera som stöd, arbetsverktyg och arbetsunderlag i vårdarbetet. Utvecklingen av informationsteknologi (IT) i vården har inneburit en möjliggörande faktor som har medfört nya arbetssätt, organisationsformer och arbetsprocesser. Utvecklingen och användningen av informationssystem (IS) i vården är det mest centrala informations- och kommunikationsverktyget för sjuksköterskorna i den dagliga patientbehandlingen. Det är viktigt att sjuksköterskor skaffar sig en utbildning inom IT, vilket innebär kunskap och skicklighet och stödjer dem i deras praktik, administration och forskning. Betydelsen av att sjuksköterskorna innehar en IT-kompetens i vården idag kan inte nog understrykas. Syftet med undersökningen var att hitta olika tillvägagångssätt som gör att sjuksköterskans IT-kompetens kan höjas. Intervjuer och observationer genomfördes för att undersöka problemområdet. Resultatet visade att det är av stor vikt att organisationerna för de olika verksamheterna inom Hälso- och Sjukvården utvecklar en strategi angående sjuksköterskans IT-kompetens för att precisera vilka IT-kunskaper som krävs för att kunna hantera den stora mängden av informationsflöde i vården

    Icke-kommersiella organisationer har fått en ökad betydelse för samhället vilket har medfört samhällsgranskning och kritik mot dessa organisationer. Utvecklingen kan leda till förändrade attityder för organisationerna med minskad kredibilitet som följd. Detta har en avgörande betydelse för deras utveckling och fortlevnad eftersom de interagerar med och är beroende av samhället. Ett alternativ för att bemöta den bristande kredibiliteten är Internet som via webbplatser tillhandahåller kommunikation med samhället både enkelt och ekonomiskt. Det har dock visat sig att icke-kommersiella organisationer ofta brister i uppdatering av dessa. Det finns således ett behov för dem att finna enkla och lätthanterliga verktyg för att administrera sina webbplatser. Ett möjligt sådant verktyg är det webbaserade redigeringsverktyget phpwiki. Denna studie undersöker hur detta verktyg kan integreras på en icke-kommersiell organisations webbplats för att underlätta administration. Undersökningen genomförs som en aktionsforskningsstudie baserat på ett antal cykler av observation, reflektion och analys dels ur ett praktiskt, dels ur ett teoretiskt perspektiv.

    Det praktiska resultatet från studien är dels en integrerad version av phpwiki på webbplatsen, dels en manual för hur det webbaserade redigeringsverktyget phpwiki kan integreras på en icke-kommersiell organisations webbplats. Studien påvisar att phpwiki är ett alternativ för att bemöta bristande kredibilitet i form av dåligt uppdaterade webbplatser. Den bekräftar även kritik som riktats mot aktionsforskning men påvisar samtidigt att bra modeller, tekniker, ramverk och kunskap kan förebygga detta.

    IT-outsourcing blir bara mer vanligt och därmed blir det även mer nödvändigt att uppmärksamma de risker som kan uppstå i samband med outsourcing. Denna studie identifierar olika risker med IT-outsourcing och applicerar dessa i en kvalitativ undersökningsform för att ta reda på riskmedvetenheten hos småföretag i Göteborg. Studien har påvisat att det inte finns några genomträngande drag gällande om småföretag har bra eller dålig riskmedvetenhet. Det studien har påvisat är att det är väldigt blandat och att företagen i många fall är väldigt spridda kring vetskap av de olika riskerna som behandlas i denna studie. Denna studie bidrar även med en lista med punkter som är viktiga att tänka på vid IT-outsourcing och denna lista baseras på vad som framträdde som bristande hos vissa företag vid deras riskmedvetenhet.

    Abstract [en]

    XML was designed to be a new standard for marking up data on the web. However, as a result of its extensible and flexible properties, XML is now being used more and more for other purposes than was originally intended. Today XML is prompting an approach more focused on data exchange, between different applications inside companies or even between cooperating businesses.

    Businesses are showing interest in using XML as an integral part of their work. Ericsson Microwave Systems (EMW) is a company that sees XML as a conceivable solution to problems in the work with radar communications. An approach towards a solution based on a relational database system has earlier been analysed.

    In this project we present an investigation of the work at EMW, and identification and documentation of the problems in the radar communication work. Also, the requirements and expectations that EMW has on XML are presented. Moreover, an analysis has been made to decide to what extent XML could be used to solve the problems of EMW. The analysis was conducted by elucidating the problems and possibilities of XML compared to the previous approach for solving the problems at EMW, which was based on using a relational database management system.

    The analysis shows that XML has good features for representing hierarchically structured data, as in the EMW case. It is also shown that XML is good for data integration purposes. Furthermore, the analysis shows that XML, due to its self-describing and weak typing nature, is inappropriate to use in the data semantics and integrity problem context of EMW. However, it also shows that the new XML Schema standard could be used as a complement to the core XML standard, to partially solve the semantics problems.

    A beam/adhesive-layer model is developed. For this model a closed-form solution method applicable to arbitrary boundary conditions is presented. This enables the solution of a large number of practical problems which may be statically indeterminate. The stress state in the adhesive layer and the adherends of the beam/adhesive-layer model is also scrutinized. The method is exemplified in an analysis of the end-loaded split (ELS) specimen, commonly used to determine fracture energies of adhesive layers. The effect of the flexibility of the adhesive layer on the energy release rate and the critical crack length for stable crack growth is examined. Both symmetric and unsymmetric ELS-specimens are studied.

    Developers have a tendency to deliver meaningless dashboards to users from different organizations. A dashboard is a visual display that presents the important information on one single screen, for users to make decisions. As it is with the help of dashboards that decisions are to be made, the design is as important as the data is right. Most of the time the developer only throws something up on a dashboard and visualize according to his own experience and feelings, which may cause users not to attempt to work with the dashboard. With a user-friendly dashboard, it becomes easier for the user to make decisions and also becomes more grateful.  2  The results of this study is that there are important areas that developers should focus on in order to be able to achieve a user-friendly dashboard. The study has only focused on user-friendly based on the design principles. Based on the focus areas that have been developed, points have also been established based on what all users themselves have said and share in common. The developed focus areas are the placement of information, colours and choice of graphs. The study´s results make a clear difference from what previous literature has said and what users have in common with the literature.

    Replenishment is an important process in automotive industries. It is the process by which parts required at assembly lines are stored and organized in assembly lines supermarket. Over many years replenishment have been done with the aim of positively impacting the varying demand frequency of articles in multi flows mixed-model assembly lines (MMALs) operating in just-in-time (JIT) fashion. However, a series of successive replenishment actions have negative impacts on the number of reallocation movements of parts within volume flows of supermarkets especially within a context of multi-flows supermarkets (MFSs). The cost of movements of parts within the supermarket has not been taken into consideration in previous replenishment methods. This is a significant problem since both un-optimized reallocation movements, and articles misplacement resolutions lead to production halts which cost assembly plants valuable time and money. Therefore, this research study proposes a replenishment method that optimizes flow of material within multi-flow assembly lines supermarkets and hence reduces the cost due to reallocation movement of multi-flow assembly lines supermarkets. The proposed method has been evaluated in the context of Volvo automobile engine assembly plant in Skövde. The proposed replenishment method has been evaluated by conducting an experiment using real-world data for the assembly plant in context. Performance metrics such as accuracy, F1-score, precision, sensitivity, and specificity were used to demonstrate the utility and validity of the proposed method. The evaluation results showed that the proposed method for optimizing material flow in supermarkets performed better than the existing method. In addition to utility, the proposed method provides contribution to knowledge by providing means for the industry to adopt replenishment method that takes into consideration the cost of reallocation movements of the parts within the supermarket.

    Abstract [en]

    Background: Arsenic is a potent pollutant that has caused an environmental catastrophe in certain parts of the world including Bangladesh where millions of people are presently at risk due to drinking water contaminated by arsenic. Chronic arsenic exposure has been scientifically shown as a cause for liver damage, cancers, neurological disorders and several other ailments. The relationship between plasma cholinesterase (PChE) activity and arsenic exposure has not yet been clearly documented. However, decreased PChE activity has been found in patients suffering liver dysfunction, heart attack, cancer metastasis and neurotoxicity. Therefore, in this study, we evaluated the PChE activity in individuals exposed to arsenic via drinking water in Bangladesh.

    Methods: A total of 141 Bangladeshi residents living in arsenic endemic areas with the mean arsenic exposure of 14.10 ± 3.27 years were selected as study subjects and split into tertile groups based on three water arsenic concentrations: low (< 129 μg/L), medium (130-264 μg/L) and high (> 265 μg/L). Study subjects were further sub-divided into two groups (≤50 μg/L and > 50 μg/L) based on the recommended upper limit of water arsenic concentration (50 μg/L) in Bangladesh. Blood samples were collected from the study subjects by venipuncture and arsenic concentrations in drinking water, hair and nail samples were measured by Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectroscopy (ICP-MS). PChE activity was assayed by spectrophotometer.

    Results: Arsenic concentrations in hair and nails were positively correlated with the arsenic levels in drinking water. Significant decreases in PChE activity were observed with increasing concentrations of arsenic in water, hair and nails. The average levels of PChE activity in low, medium and high arsenic exposure groups were also significantly different between each group. Lower levels of PChE activity were also observed in the > 50 μg/L group compared to the ≤50 μg/L group. Moreover, PChE activity was significantly decreased in the skin (+) symptoms group compared to those without (-).

    Conclusions: We found a significant inverse relationship between arsenic exposure and PChE activity in a human population in Bangladesh. This research demonstrates a novel exposure-response relationship between arsenic and PChE activity which may explain one of the biological mechanisms through which arsenic exerts its neuro-and hepatotoxicity in humans.

    Since the notion of hesitant fuzzy set was introduced, some clustering algorithms have been proposed to cluster hesitant fuzzy data. Beside of hesitation in data, there is some hesitation in the clustering (classification) of a crisp data set. This hesitation may be arise in the selection process of a suitable clustering (classification) algorithm and initial parametrization of a clustering (classification) algorithm. Hesitant fuzzy set theory is a suitable tool to deal with this kind of problems. In this study, we introduce two different points of view to apply hesitant fuzzy sets in the data mining tasks, specially in the clustering algorithms.

    PREDICTION OF PROTEIN SECONDARY STRUCTURE by Incorporating Biophysical Information into Artificial Neural Networks1998Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

    This project applied artificial neural networks to the field of secondary structure prediction of proteins. A NETtalk architecture with a window size 13 was used. Over-fitting was avoided by the use of 3 real numbers to represent amino acids, reducing the number of adjustable weights to 840. Two alternative representations of amino acids that incorporated biophysical data were created and tested. They were tested both separately and in combination on a standard 7-fold cross-validation set of 126 proteins. The best performance was achieved using an average result from two predictions. This was then filtered and gave the following results. Accuracy levels for core structures were: Q3total accuracy of 61.3% consisting of Q3 accuracy’s of 54.0%, 38.1% & 77.0% for Helix, Strand and Coil respectively with Matthew’s correlation’s Ca = 0.34, Cb = 0.26 , Cc = 0.31. The average lengths of structures predicted were 9.8, 4.9 and 11.0, for helix, sheet and coil respectively. These results are lower than those of other methods using single sequences and localist representations. The most likely reason for this is over generalisation caused by using a small number of units.

    Enligt vissa kontroversiella forskare, som kallar sig kognitiva etologer, så kan antropomorfism användas i forskningssyfte inom djurkognition. Syftet med den här rapporten är att analysera antropomorfism och dess grundläggande beståndsdelar, samt utföra en undersökning för att ta reda på vilka faktorer som påverkar människors tolkningar av djurs beteende. Tre personer fick kommentera några videosekvenser, innehållande djur. De skulle låtas att de var ett av djuren och efter varje videosekvens blev de utfrågade om hur de hade resonerat under "agerandet". Den kvalitativa analysen av materialet visade att flera faktorer tillsammans inverkade på deltagarnas tolkningar och att överdriven antropomorfism kan undvikas till viss del, beroende på individuella faktorer.

    Facilitation matters: A framework for instructor-led serious gaming2014Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

    This thesis explores the use of serious games from an instructor perspective. More specifically, it aims to study the roles of instructors and how they can be facilitated within an instructor-led game-based training environment. Research within the field of serious games has mostly focused on the learners' perspective, but little attention has been paid to what the instructors do and what challenges that entails. In this thesis, I argue that serious games, as artefacts used for learning and training, cannot fully replace the instructors' tasks, but must rather be designed to facilitate the various activities of the instructors. Thus, instructors form an important target audience in serious game development – not just as subject matter experts, but also as users and players of the game – with a different set of needs than the learners. Moreover, serious gaming (the actualisation of a serious game) involves more than in-game activities, it also involves actions and events that occur off-game. These activities must also be considered when designing and utilising games for learning and training.

    Using a qualitative approach, instructor-led serious gaming has been explored from a range of contexts, from rehabilitation to incident commander training and military training. Several different instructor roles have been identified and characterised, including in-game facilitator, puckster, debriefer, technical support and subject matter expert. Based on empirical and theoretical material, a framework for instructor-led serious gaming has been developed. It involves best practices in different phases of game-based training, such as scenario authoring, coaching-by-gaming, assessing in-game and off-game performance, giving feedback, and conducting a debriefing or after-action review. Furthermore, specific needs and challenges for instructors have been identified and reformulated into guidelines for instructor-led serious gaming. The guidelines highlight the importance of usability and visualisation, as well as the need for carefully designed support tools for instructors' situation awareness, assessment and debriefing. Lastly, a number of success factors pertaining to both the development and actualisation of serious games are presented. Since serious games aim to be both productive and engaging, it is advantageous to work with interdisciplinary teams when developing serious games. This includes subject matter experts well versed in serious gaming practices. Furthermore, a successful serious game should adhere to sound pedagogical theories, be easy to use and maintain, and include system support for instructors' tasks. Successful serious gaming practices also involve having an organisational culture that fosters knowledge sharing among practitioners.

    In this paper we describe four player roles in game-based learning and training, namely student player, student author, teacher player and teacher author. By this, we want to emphasise the creative and collaborative nature of gameplay, such as in-game feedback, scenario creation and “puckstering“, that put students and teachers, not on opposite sides of a spectrum, but as members of a community of practice with varying degrees of expertise. Using these four player roles as a basis for analysis, we have observed training sessions for vocational education within military and rescue contexts. The result is multifaceted insights into both the strengths and draw-backs of incorporating these roles into a serious game.

    Abstract [en]

    Game-based tools for rehabilitation of different types of physical and cognitive impairments are becoming more and more popular. By introducing an element of fun, these systems aim at increasing patients' motivation to train and, from a further perspective, improve recovery rates. There is, however, a question whether such tools will be fully accepted by the intended target group. Earlier work on user acceptance has mainly focused on utility systems, i.e. systems used mainly in the work place. However, people use systems for different reasons and that makes it difficult to apply the same principles on systems with the main purpose to entertain. Serious games have characteristics from both utility and entertainment systems, which makes it interesting to study the acceptance of these kinds of systems. In this study, we have developed a home-based entertainment system for stroke rehabilitation, with focus on rehabilitation of motor impairments. By analysing the gaming behaviour and interview responses of five stroke patients, we investigate factors influencing user acceptance of this specific type of system. The results show that current models of acceptance are not sufficient to fully explain acceptance of serious games in general and serious games for rehabilitation in particular. Besides well-known factors, such as perceived usefulness, perceived ease-of-use and perceived enjoyment, other, more specific, factors also play a vital role in the acceptance of the system.

    Abstract [en]

    The goal of the project presented in this paper is to enable motor rehabilitation to stroke patients in their home environment and to utilise game enjoyment to achieve frequent training. Stroke patients have an average age above 70 years, which implies that they typically do not belong to a gaming generation. In addition, these patients suffer from motor, and many times cognitive impairments, which make traditional games extremely difficult to use. Nearly all work in this area has been conducted in a clinic environment where it is possible to overcome some of these difficulties by letting professionals assist and guide patients.

    In this paper, we present the challenges faced, the system itself and the result from a study where five patients were equipped with a game console in their homes for five weeks. The focus of this paper is on analysing the gaming behaviour of patients, which includes the amount of time they spent, the type of games they selected and their comments on the gaming experience. The conclusion from this analysis is that their behaviour resembles that of gamers. They spent significant voluntary time, and it has been possible for patients, with no prior experience of computer games, to enjoy gaming in their homes where they had no professional assistance.

    Abstract [en]

    Elinor is a game based tool for rehabilitation of stroke patients to be used in their home environment. The application is the result of a creative and exploratory development project in which researchers in the serious games area and experts in stroke rehabilitation collaborated in order to develop a motivating, easy to use and relatively inexpensive tool for relearning functions lost due to a stroke. Elinor can be viewed as an integrated system for stroke rehabilitation in that it is both a system, controlled by movements, for training of its primary user group and a system for monitoring the training by medical expertise. In this paper, we will describe the Elinor application itself, the development process and the initial evaluation of it in order to identify implications for serious games.

    Abstract [en]

    Military organizations have a long history of using simulations, role-play, and games for training. This also encompasses good practices concerning how instructors utilize games and gaming behavior. Unfortunately, the work of instructors is rarely described explicitly in research relating to serious gaming. Decision makers also tend to have overconfidence in the pedagogical power of games and simulations, particularly where the instructor is taken out of the gaming loop. The authors propose a framework, the coaching cycle, that focuses on the roles of instructors. The roles include instructors acting as game players. The fact that the instructors take a more active part in all training activities will further improve learning. The coaching cycle integrates theories of experiential learning (where action precedes theory) and deliberate practice (where the trainee's skill is constantly challenged by a coach). Incorporating a coaching-by-gaming perspective complicates, but also strengthens, the player-centered design approach to game development in that we need to take into account two different types of players: trainees and instructor. Furthermore, the authors argue that the coaching cycle allows for a shift of focus to a more thorough debriefing, because it implies that learning of theoretical material before simulation/game playing is kept to a minimum. This shift will increase the transfer of knowledge.

    Detta arbete är en studie av hur motivation påverkar individens inlärning. Lär vi oss bättre om vi är motiverade? Kan man motiveras under en utbildning och nå lika goda resultat som om man hade varit motiverad vid utbildningens början? Detta är några av de frågor som jag ställt mig inför min undersökning om motivationens påverkan på inlärningen.

    Undersökningen av problemet har skett med en kvalitativ intervju med bestämda frågor. I denna undersökning har jag utgått från de faktorer som påverkar motivation - vilja, delaktighet, tilltro, självförtroende, information och kunskap samt trygghet. Med dessa faktorer som utgångspunkt har jag ställt frågor för att reda ut hur stor betydelse individens motivation har för det han/hon lär sig.

    Resultatet av min undersökning visar att motivationen har betydelse för vår inlärning. Framförallt är viljan att lära sig mycket viktig. Mitt undersökningsresultat visar också att man kan motiveras under pågående utbildning. En individ som är motiverad i det initiala skedet av utbildningen lär sig bättre, men en individ som motiveras under utbildningen kan uppnå nästan lika goda slutresultat.

    Abstract [en]

    Wireless Protected Setup (WPS) is a security protocol for wireless networks. Its design contains a serious security flaw that could allow an attacker access to a password-protected wireless network. An attack can be executed using various tools available.

    In this report, the software-tools Reaver and Bully are compared in performance against WiFi’s WPS-protocol, where Bully previously has been shown to be more effective and predicted faster to execute a bruteforce-attack. A practical laboration has been executed in order to determine differences in speed that can be seen between the tools Reaver and Bully in a bruteforce-attack. The experiment was done by measuring the time it took both tools to test 100 PIN-numbers against a router without protection for WPS.

    The result shows that Bully performs a bruteforce-attack in higher speed compared to Reaver. However, with the higher attack-speed that Bully uses, some stability issues may follow, opening the topic of future discussion regarding priorities of speed vs. stability for successful attacks.

    Challenging the dual coding theory: Does Affective Information Play a Greater Role in Abstract Compared to Concrete Word Processing?2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 15 credits / 22,5 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

    It has long been held that concrete material has a processing advantage over abstract material, as predicted by Dual Coding Theory (Paivio,1991), although this has been challenged. For example, based on evidence for behavioural and neuroscientific studies, Kousta,, Vigliocco, Vinson, & Del Campo, (2011) proposed that emotional valance had a greater influence in the processing of abstract words, and that under some circumstances there may be no concreteness effect and might even be an abstractness effect. This would not be predicted by DCT. In addition, Isen and Daubman (1984) have claimed that emotional valence, and particularly positive emotion can influence cognitive processing. Specifically, they demonstrated that positive emotion was associated with more inclusive categorization of ambiguous category members. This current study was a 2 x 2 between group design to investigate the effect of positive and negative valence on recognition memory for concrete and abstract words and on categorization. Contrary to what was predicted by Dual Coding Theory, abstract words were generally better recognized than concrete, with there being an additional interaction with valence. A significant interaction between word type and valence on categorization was also found. Results partially support Kousta et al. (2011).

    Some scientists claim that there's a connection between entertainment and immersion. The epic theatre wanted to distance the audience but at the same time encourage them to reflect and be entertained. The study intended to examine how entertaining and immersive the participants experienced a game designed after epic theatre principles. After playing such a game, the participants either answered a questionnaire or took part in an interview. In general, they experienced high or mid-high immersion and entertainment. However, there were large differences between different individuals. The experience might have been affected by an interest in the theme or similar games. Immersion and entertainment share some components that seem to make the concepts difficult to separate in practice. There's a value in further research to understand immersion, entertainment and reflection better, and also how these affect each other. This might lead to more critical thinking and knowledge amongst the population.

    På bara ett par år har elektronisk handel potential att radikalt förändra de ekonomiska och sociala förhållanden i samhället. Internets snabba tillväxt kopplar samman individer och organisationer till ett stort globalt nätverk som representerar enorma möjligheter. Det talas om ett nätverkssamhälle och en nätverksekonomi.

    Elektronisk handel driver företag mot att bedriva affärer på ett fundamentalt nytt sätt. Behovet av att dela information i realtid ökar tillsammans med förändringarna i värdekedjan.

    Syftet med studien är att kartlägga elektronisk handel i allmänhet. Studien fokuseras på hur elektronisk handel används för att länka samman företag, stora som små, från råmaterial till konsumenten. Arbetet belyser hinder och krav i samband med elektronisk handel och det sätt de hanteras på.

    Företagen i undersökningen visar ingen tydlig strävan mot att uppnå en totalt integrerad värdekedja. Grundliga affärsprocesser flyttas mot Internet för att utnyttja nätverkets fördelar. Främst används EDI och online-tjänster som Internetbutiker för elektronisk handel.

Precis som andra värdefulla resurser så måste också denna skyddas mot obehörigas åtkomst. Detta examensarbete handlar om systemförvaltning och arbetet med att revidera säkerheten i ett datorsystem. Eftersom denna typ av revision är en väsentlig del av arbetet med att upprätthålla säkerheten i ett system, är det följaktligen viktigt att känna till hur en säkerhetsrevision genomförs. I resultatet presenteras ett antal olika aspekter och delområden som bör granskas vid en revision av säkerheten hos datorer i ett datorsystem. Resultatet visar även att det är svårt att finna någon enskild modell eller standard som täcker samtliga aspekter som bör undersökas vid en säkerhetsrevision

    Abstract [en]

    Placebo treatments are inert but are known to alleviate symptoms across numerous clinical conditions. One of the most studied placebo effects is placebo analgesia, which is a placebo effect limited to pain relief. This thesis aims to introduce the current state of research regarding the neuroscience of placebo analgesia and specifically to present research findings regarding the neurotransmission. Studies have demonstrated that placebo analgesia can be elicited through two separate processes interacting with each other; manipulation of expectations and through conditioning. These processes seem to affect neurotransmission in different ways. Many brain areas have been found to be correlated to placebo analgesia. Besides the pain-processing brain areas, studies point to that the prefrontal cortex can have a vital role in the placebo analgesic effect. Known neurotransmitters that have shown to be involved in placebo analgesia are endogenous opioids, cholecystokinin (CCK), and endocannabinoids. Studies point to that endogenous opioids are involved in the placebo analgesic effect when elicited by expectation or conditioned by an opioid drug. CCK act on placebo analgesia by affecting the release of endogenous opioids and endocannabinoids seem to be involved in placebo analgesia while it occurs due to conditioning with non-opioid drugs. Getting a better understanding of placebo analgesia and find ways to apply this knowledge in the clinical context could powerfully develop the whole medical society.

    Hur presterar Single-page applikation och Multi-page applikation beroende på datamängden webbsidan består av?  Hur påverkas svarstiderna beroende om det är en MPA- eller en SPA-baserad webbsida. Dessa frågor är de som ligger i fokus för detta arbete. Empiriska mätningar tillämpades för att besvara de frågor. En webbsida skapades för skönhetssalongen Red Carpet i Skövde. Två olika versioner av webbsidan utvecklades, en SPA-baserad och en MPA-baserad. Skillnaden mellan de båda versionerna är enbart att ena är utvecklad som en SPA och den ena är utvecklad som en MPA.Därefter lades en varierande datamängd i form av bilder till på sidorna för att se hur datamängden påverkar webbapplikationernas svarstider.

    Within the field of medical informatics, patient medical records are the sole source of information for dealing with clinical activities concerning the documentation, care, progression, and ongoing interactions between the patient and clinicians. Electronic or computer-based patient records (CPRs) have had a presence within health care in some form and magnitude for the past thirty years yet only recently have been incorporated in health care to a larger extent. Due to the wide variation of professions in health care, there is a problem of CPRs not being able to fulfill all the possibilities and demands the individual professionals need, since many CPRs are designed as a generic system, to be used across multiple professions.

    The focus of this report is on the utilization of a generic CPR in a specialist clinical setting, i.e., a physical therapy clinic, and to analyze how the therapists utilize the different components and features in a generic CPR. The purpose of the evaluation was to investigate how viable the CPR was as a documentation tool and to which extent it supported the therapists in their clinical, documentation and delivery of care activities. In this study, a total of seven physical therapists participated in a post-usage evaluation of an existing CPR. The evaluation was achieved by interpretative research with open-ended interviews and observations. The results of the study showed that despite some shortcomings, the generic CPR was an effective tool for the clinicians, not only as a documenting aid, but also enabling them to quickly research the patients' prior diagnosis and treatment history, plan for future care, support decision-making and to communicate with other professionals so as to coordinate treatment and planning.

    Detta arbete handlar om ifall perceptionen av ljud i stadsmiljöer kan påverka uppfattningen av instruktioner och minne. I den litterära bakgrunden presenteras vad ett ljud är, vad skillnaden är mellan Hi-fi och Lo-fi ljudlandskap samt en generell överblick om vad noise är och hur människans minne fungerar. Frågeställningen som undersöktes var om perceptionen av olika ljud i en stadsmiljö kan påverka uppfattningen av instruktioner. För att kunna svara på frågeställningen skapades tre olika ljudsekvenser, där två av sekvenserna innehåller ljuden som kan påverka instruktionerna och en är kontrollsekvensen för att se om instruktionerna är lätta att följa. Den urvalsgrupp som deltog fick lyssna och utföra olika instruktioner samt svara på kvalitativa frågor. Detta användes sedan för nå en slutsats. Vid ett framtida arbete och fördjupning av undersökningen kan det leda till att information och ljud i spel inte går förlorade i mängden av andra ljud, perspektivet av dem finns kvar.
