Improved accuracy of surrogate models using output postprocessing2007Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Using surrogate approximations (e.g. Kriging interpolation or artifical neural networks) is an established technique for decreasing the execution time of simulation optimization problems. However, constructing surrogate approximations can be impossible when facing complex simulation inputs, and instead one is forced to use a surrogate model, which explicitly attempts to simulate the inner workings of the underlying simulation model. This dissertation has investigated if postprocessing the output of a surrogate model with an artificial neural network can increase its accuracy and value in simulation optimization problems. Results indicate that the technique has potential in that when output post-processing was enabled the accuracy of the surrogate model increased, i.e. its output more losely matched the output of the real simulation model. No apparent improvement in optimization performance could be observed however. It was speculated that this was due to either the optimization algorithm used not taking advantage of the improved accuracy of the surrogate model, or the fact the the improved accuracy of the surrogate model was to small to make any measurable impact. Further investigation of these issues must be conducted in order to get a better understanding of the pros and cons of the technique.

Produktionseffektivisering med hjälp av flödessimulering och förbättringsarbete2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

AB Furhoffs Rostfria is a company with its base in Skövde. They are specialists in the manufacturing of stainless-steel parts, such as plumbing products, floor wells and sinks. In addition to manufacturing their own products, the company also has a subcontract to manufacture other companies’ products.

The department where this bachelor thesis will be conducted has a subcontract to manufacturing radar cones and treats only the production of the most frequent manufactured radar cones. The department consists of seven manufacturing steps and three additional steps for one of the details.

The purpose of the bachelor thesis is to create a simulation model that shows how potential improvement proposals would meet the expected increase of the order intake of the radar cones by streamlining the current production flow. In order to achieve this, a simulation model has been created in which the improvement proposals have been implemented. The improvement proposals that have been tested are based on the data that has been collected through production engineering methods.

The frame of references describes the theory that constitutes the foundation for the chosen methods. In addition, areas within discrete event simulation, lean production and improvement work have been studied from other works in the literature review. These areas can in some way relate to the work and conclusions of this project.

The empirical study was conducted by using observations according to genchi genbutsu, conversations and interviews with operators, spaghetti diagrams of the operators and the product flow as well as time studies according to the continuous method. These methods have formed the basis for both the creation of the simulation model, where the current situation is reflected, and for the development of the future state simulation model. The future state simulation model shows the implementation of the improvement proposals that increases efficiency and production volume throughout the system.

The empirical study resulted in a visual overview of the production flow, standard times, the identification of waste as well as improvement proposals. When all the improvement proposals were implemented, the hourly production was increased by 26.6% and the lead time was reduced by 21.1%. With these improvements, the company can increase their production and profit significantly.

En studie om kritiska faktorer vid implementering av E-förvaltning inom skolan.: En internanvändares perspektiv.2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In recent years, many of the services run by governments around the world have begun to become more and more digitilized. This means that many processes that required manual / physical handling have become possible to do in the comfort of your home without having to face the company/organization directly. Many of these services include healthcare, the tax office and the school. These systems aim to serve the residents, but also to streamline the work for the internal users within the municipality or government.

During these developments and implementation processes, there are usually factors that developers or organizations should try to achieve if the system or service being developed is to succeed. There are many of these factors that have been documented in previous studies. Napitupulu (2014) is one of these researchers who collected and documented these factors. Examples of these factors are Training, top managers support, User participation and strong leadership.

These factors, however, have never been centered on the internal end-users of these systems and it has often not been emphasized in previous research on factors for e-government about which of these factors have the most significant impact if these were to be achieved.

This study therefore focused on finding the most important factors when implementing internal end users. The work has focused on interviewing internal users of E-administration whom have been implemented in schools around the local municipality of Skövde and other neighboring municipalities. Where they recently had a new E-administration system implemented. The responses will then be compared to previous focuses that have been found to see which of these factors are most important when a system is to be implemented. The results that come from this study hope that municipalities and companies can learn which areas should be focused on when implementing new systems in the school. The study also hopes to provide a good basis for future research to continue on the future. This study was conducted at a municipal level, but more data and factors can be assured if this study is done at national level.

Taktil massage i förskolan: Metodens effekter ur ett pedagogiskt perspektiv2012Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Purpose of the study was to investigate teachers' intentions with the use of tactile massage as educational emphasis in early childhood education, with the goal to identify and describe different conceptions as to the effects of using tactile massage in early childhood education from an educator's perspective.

The study has a phenomenographic approach, an approach that implies that the researcher investigates people's perceptions and variations of a phenomenon. Data collection consisted of interviews with six teachers who used or use tactile massage in early childhood education.

The result of the study shows that the teachers’ intentions to use tactile massage can be traced to the social, physical, psychological and cognitive effects. Effects that respondents perceive the use of tactile massage.

The conclusion reads as follows: that the use of tactile massage causes the teacher who chooses the method tactile massage facing an educational dilemma, which means that the teacher must choose between what is most important, a values perspective or a didactic perspective.

    Abstract [en]

The digitalization has led to a major change in consumer’s buying behaviour. In many businesses, for example retail, e-commerce has become very popular and it is about to influence heavily the convenience goods business too. Among Swedish consumers, it is common that they at least once, have experienced buying groceries online. But the total revenue share for online grocery sales indicates that it is not done in the same extent, compared to other businesses. Purchase of groceries occur often and repeated and is characterized by a habitual behaviour. There is still though more factors that affects how Swedish consumers purchase their groceries.

The purpose of this study is to create understanding why Swedish consumers do not purchase groceries online in a larger extent. They have good experience of online purchasing in the retail business as well as they are familiar with buying groceries online. The study also aims to identify the influencing factors when a consumer chooses online purchasing for grocery shopping.

The result of the study concludes why consumers choose to not purchase their groceries through e-commerce. It depends on consumers’ habitual behavior, but also their need of touch and feel the groceries before purchase. They are also not willing to pay the extra fees that comes with the service of purchasing groceries through e-commerce. The factors that affect a consumer choosing e-commerce for grocery shopping are convenience, availability and time saving.

Suggestions to further research is to have a broader selection of respondents, with a wider range of age, from all over Sweden. This will enable to generalize and draw conclusions of a larger population.

Revisorns personlighet: Revisorns personliga inverkan på dokumentationen samt revisionskvaliteten under tidspress2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Natively vs. non-natively compiled threaded Android applications: A comparative study on time-efficiency2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 15 credits / 22,5 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this work is to investigate whether threaded Android-applications written in C or C++ are more time-efficient than threaded Android-applications written in Java.

The first part of the work was to perform a literature analysis in order to find out which types of algorithms were used in previous studies comparing the performance between non-threaded Android-applications written in Java and C/C++. Another literature analysis was performed where the outcome was to find suitable threaded versions of algorithms that could be used to compare the difference in time-consumption between algorithms implemented in Java and C/C++.

Results have shown that for simple arithmetic operations and sorting functions, it is still possible to gain performance in terms of time-efficiency by implementing applications in C/C++. However, there are clear indications that these gains are smaller than they are in the non-threaded case. In algorithms dealing with string operations, the Java-version was significantly more time-efficient than the C++-version

Optimization and re-design of a wheel hub to reduce unsprung mass of a rallycross car2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The Wheel Hub of a rallycross car is analysed to reduce the unsprung mass of the car. The problem statement is to mainly focus on the unsprung mass related to the suspension, and more specifically on the Wheel Hub. One of the objectives of the suspension system of a car is to damping the movement of the car. This is an important area when designing a vehicle, and especially a race car due to the extreme conditions that may result in reduced traction and loose of confidence for the driver. A theoretical model is performed to demonstrate the importance of a low unsprung mass and to illustrate how it affects the vehicle-handling. A process to evaluate the current Wheel Hub and decision to re-design the Wheel Hub is performed, and the parts are analysed using the Finite Element Method to verify the design and material selection. Vehicle dynamics of the car is analysed to calculate the acting forces. Optimization of the design is performed by using Computer Aided Engineering. The re-designed Wheel Hub presented as the result of this project with a Brake Disk Adapter integrated in Hub. This design reduces the number of parts, and the unsprung mass up to 25% without any effects on suspension geometry or other parts of the car.

Using a Serious Game as an Educational Tool about Obligation to Give Notice: A Game Collaboration with Tidaholm Municipality2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 15 credits / 22,5 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The focus of this thesis was to use serious games as a tool to teach about obligation to give notice. Obligation to give notice means that certain professionals need to report to social services if a child is being harmed. This thesis studied if case-based storytelling could bring a relevant teaching experience, if storytelling could help participants learn about obligation to give notice and how instant and delayed feedback affect the learning. Participants played a story-based game with either instant or delayed feedback and answered three questionnaires about obligation to give notice. The study found that participants did find that the storytelling was useful for learning and gaining more knowledge about about obligation to give notice. For the feedback it was found that both types of feedback made the participants learn significantly more but there was no significant difference when comparing the feedbacks to each other.

Utveckling av vippgunga för barn i åldrarna 1-3 år2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

During the spring of 2013, Emilia Andersson, a student in product design engineering at University of Skövde, carried out a product development project in cooperation with HAGS Aneby AB. The aim of the project was to develop a seesaw adapted for children aged 1-3 years. The goal was to develop a seesaw that could be sold worldwide and meet the American standard and European standard for playground equipment.

The project began with a pre study and a theory phase, which included literature review and competitor analysis and information were gathered to gain a deeper knowledge of the subject. Later on ideas and concepts were generated, which then through evaluations as user testing lead to a final concept. The concept was evaluated with for example strength calculations and an anthropometric analysis.

The final seesaw can, despite adjustment for the age group, not only be use by 1-3-year-olds, but also by older children, this thanks to the design and the handles that provide extra play values.

SJUKSKÖTERSKEPROFESSIONENS IDENTIFIKATION: Medarbetarskap i professionella organisationer2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Background: People tend to identify themselves with different social groups based on, for instance, professional or organizational affiliation. Individuals who identify themselves with the same social group often create similar norms and values, which create a sense of belonging. In a professional organization professional co-workers tend to identify themselves with their profession rather than their organization, which in turn affects the relationship between the individual and the organization. In recent years the concept of co-workership has become increasingly popular in the Swedish labor market. The concept of co-workership includes how employees handle the relationship with their employer and to their own work. Depending on the extent to which employees identify themselves with their profession and their organization these relationships are affected.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to describe how professional identification influences the co-workership in professional organizations.

Method: To give a descriptive picture of the chosen area the study is based on a qualitative approach. In order to describe how professional identification influences the co-workership in professional organizations two case studies has been conducted, both organizations are to be found in the health care field. The study is based on qualitative interviews with respondents belonging to a chosen profession.

Results and conclusion: The present study has revealed that professional co-workers in a professional organization tend to identify themselves with their profession rather than their organization. Since co-workership is based on relationships both with employers and to the co-workers own work the professional identification therefor has an influence on the co-workership. The present study further revealed that trust occurs more widely within the own profession. It has also been found that fellowship and collaboration primarily occurs within the own profession. The study has shown that professionals tend to experience a stronger commitment to their work than to their organization, they also tend to take more responsibility for their own work than for the whole organization.

Könsfördelning och karriärmöjligheter inom revisionsbranschen2007Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Collaborative robots are a new technology that offers flexibility and precision for manual tasks that previously have been difficult to automate. Volvo Group Trucks Operations engine plant in Skövde is a pilot plant where new technical solutions are tested before it is implemented in the rest of the company. The company sees that collaborative robots can provide benefits for the operator’s ergonomics and improved process and product quality in the final assembly of 13L truck engines. The purpose of the project is to investigate the possibilities of collaborative robots in the final assembly as well as to give a deeper understanding of the robot's field of application. The project has been defined to Universal Robots, preparation, preassembly and final assembly for 13L truck engines. The objectives are to develop distinctive features for a coactive implementation, to develop a basic analysis and to co-locate possible tasks into a coactive station and if co-location is not possible provide recommendations on minimal features that should be included in the collaborative robot.

To achieve the goals, a systematic method has been prepared to ensure that the project addresses to the problem and the objectives. Knowledge has been gathered through literature studies and reference frameworks to form the basis for the practical work. All operations in areas 1-4 on the production line have been identified and analyzed to find coactive features, which has been the basis for developing a basic analysis. Several of the features that have been identified from the production line are consistent with what a Universal Robot can perform. That these features match, shows that a collaborative robot is possible to implement in the final assembly. The basic analysis has then been used to co-locate two coactive stations in the production line.

The basic analysis could be used as a basis for the company in the implementation of collaborative robots. As technology of collaborative robots develops, the features and basic analysis needs to be updated.

    Abstract [en]

The aim is to analyse the institutional character of, and the on-going communication in, a net community organised by and for young people. This is achieved using terms of conditions for situational political socialisation – a situation in a specific context in which the participants, within the battle between different groups attempting to organise society through interaction and action, adopt political preferences and skills. The thesis builds on agonism, a political theory in which controversy and struggle are viewed as prerequisites for human life that uses language as a political act. The net community, as an institution, contingently depends on political rebirth via action and communication. The use of language creates places that give the institution meaning while at the same time the institution claims the participants and their creation of meaning. Black Heart, the analysed net community, is a quasi-public space for and by young people aged between 14 and 28 years. It is a cultural community where political conversations take place among other kinds of communication. The institutional character of Black Heart and ten politically controversial conversations are analysed, using a case study method that applies web content analysis and computer mediated discourse analysis. There is a strong institutional framework operating in the political text conversations of Black Heart, the participants are governed by the institution and the participants govern each other. The political communication is characterised by revealing and arguing for political interest. To challenge is the dominant category of political action which constitutes political subjects that are offensive, argumentative and polemic. Political communication and the on-going interaction generate an educational situation in which the participants are expected to be content oriented, argumentative, expressive, communicative and polemic.

Irony in the Political: Young people's use of irony in a political text conversation in a net community2010In: Lifelong Learning and Active Citizenship: Proceedings of the twelfth Conference of the Children's Identity and Citizenship in Europe Academic Network / [ed] Peter Cunningham and Nathan Fretwell, London: CiCe , 2010, p. 641-650Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The net community1 as a public place expresses current society while creating conditions and providing a framework for societal development and young people’s participation, living and understanding of the wider society. Today young people spend much time on the Internet, specifically in the social media2, and everyday political conversations are minimally researched. My research deals with young people’s conversation in net communities and how these conversations look, and the opportunities this creates for the growth of political citizens: What potential relevance may these opportunities have when young people are faced with existentially controversial and vital issues (about sustainable development)? The question for this paper is limited to a small part of this broader context concerning everyday political conversations in the light of irony. According to previous research, irony is a multifaceted and ambiguous phenomenon and the social media offer new expressions for irony. What does this mean for the text conversation? Irony is shown to be, through an initial observation, a rhetorical resource that visualises adversaries and pushes the conversation forward. My intention is, through a rhetorically oriented discourse analysis, to understand irony by identifying different types of irony and discuss possible implications: How does the use of irony look? What are its consequences for the conversation and the growth of political citizens? The theoretical entrance for this leans on the idea of the political. First I will present the concept of irony; secondly, theoretical and methodological inputs; thirdly, a description of the empirical data and how irony is identified; and finally, I present some preliminary results and conclusions.

Teachers find it difficult to conduct political controversial conversations in the social science classroom and due to an increased use of social media in educational settings new challenges and possibilities are raised. The use of social media causes fundamental changes to the role of the learner who becomes a producer and consumer – a prosumer – of educational content. With a social media perspective and a didactical focus on learning in democracy and political action the article discusses didactical conditions and possibilities of political controversial conversations in social science education and derives a set of didactic strategies. When approaching the classroom as a diverse ideological public space, recognising the students as political agents and using a social media perspective it is possible to balance the function of education – socialisation, qualification and subjectification – and at the same time stimulate societal engagement and political action.

Situational political socialization: a normative approach to young people’s adoption and acquisition of political preferences and skills2015In: Journal of Youth Studies, ISSN 1367-6261, E-ISSN 1469-9680, Vol. 18, no 8, p. 967-983Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Research on young people’s political socialization has had an adult-centered top–down bias in which young people are considered incomplete and in need of the right upbringing. The article attempts to balance this bias. The aim is to introduce and argue for another normative approach – situational political socialization. Four theoretical elements constitute its basis: (1) the political, (2) contingency (the principle of the public sphere), (3) space and place, and (4) situation. In the contingent western digital media society marked by cultural dissemination, individualism, and the erosion of traditional institutions, situational political socialization represents a normative basis for a research approach which is open, action-oriented and contextualized, viewing young people as political actors in their own right.

Sociala medier och politiskt kontroversiella samtal2015In: Kontroversiella frågor: Om kunskap och politik i samhällsundervisningen / [ed] Carsten Ljunggren, Ingrid Unemar Öst & Tomas Englund, Malmö: Gleerups Utbildning AB, 2015, 1, p. 77-94Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This article concerns young people’s political acting on their own terms. With a broad understanding of the political life – the political – and a recognition of space and place as central aspects determining young people’s condition for political socialization, the use of stake in a political conversation between young people is analyzed as an approach to describe and discuss aspects of political socialization in a public room within the social media – the net community. The political conversation within the national net community is shown to be built up and maintained by certain discursive conditions and pressures determining the character of the conversation, as well as the conditions to which you are expected to conform as a participant within this place. The findings indicate that young people’s political conversation – their political acting – in social media could be a new form of political communication with its own unique characteristics, creating conditions for young people’s political socialization.

    Abstract [en]

The ability to express oneself in text has come to be an even more pressuring task due to new media. The use of text in the new media and the school looks slightly different and create different claims on which kind of text activity that are advocated. Language activity and use of text in different spaces and places has become a constituent principle in the western society of today – language and the use of text is seen as the ontological condition for social life. The historical and conventional media notion of public and reception has been replaced by a more complex communication situation due to the digital media. Related to this context and the linguistic turn, three concepts; text action, text conversation and the pedagogy of place are developed and exemplified by a national net community. The theoretical contribution makes it possible to understand and approach the use of text and the complexity this use in different spaces and places articulates. The national net community is discussed in relation to the school exemplifying two different public spaces where new media is put forward illustrating a social situation consti-tuted of text – young people’s use of text practically becomes context. How can we understand and approach this new educational situation?

    Abstract [en]

Political conversation is a prerequisite for social cohesion in society. Due to digital media, a new educational situation has been shaped that creates different conversational possibilities in which the political conversation can take place. The analysis of two cases, the international students' questionnaire used in the ICCS 2009 and findings from research in a Swedish net community, represents two spaces - school and social media - containing specific educational conditions for political conversation. These two spaces are used to problematize and discuss, in terms of political socialisation, educational conditions for political conversation in school. The Political Voice of Young Citizens is shown to be framed by different conditions depending on where, when, and how the political conversation is institutionally arranged and directed.

    Abstract [en]

In a local school development project the principles of values and norms are studied. The focus of the study is set on the moral of the collective (norms), the praxis theory (norms and valuations) and the value foundation within the context of a local school development project. The value base is compared to the value discourse in the national curriculum. In a greater perspective the study is about understanding the essence of school development. The ontological and epistemological perspectives make the value objective theory. Values become objects for assimilation and guidance of humans as social beings in the world. The values are found in the intersubjectiv construction, in the social community, where values come to exist. The research is in the areas of pedagogy and philosophy. The main technique used for collecting empirical materials is focus groups.

Pedagogical and ethical value discourses come in to sight and are expressed by the teachers. The pedagogical values Development, Participation and Autonomy are all of great importance in the practice of teaching. On the one hand the teaching fundament is constituted by the pedagogical values, the duty of teaching. The ethical values Respect, Development, The duty to do the assignment, Freedom and The integrity of the individual, are, on the other hand all units of importance in the construction of a good school. In teaching praxis the ethical values legitimate the things that are going on. In the organization of The Tenth Day the ethical values stand for the duty of educating children. In the context of local school development pedagogical and ethical values show the existing understanding of the national curriculum. In this wholeness teachers’ values in the pedagogical deed and values for the pedagogical deed exist. If those two perspectives are used they will create a teaching praxis that contains the interaction between teachers as well as between teachers and their pupils. This interaction constructs the value base as a whole.

The theoretical contribution of this study contains a new perspective of approaching school development. They are closely related to the praxis and they also show the underlying values in an organization by defining the central concepts/ideas and using them as tools.

Political Participation as Public Pedagogy: The Educational Situation in Young People’s Political Conversations in Social Media2014In: Journal of Social Science Education, ISSN 1611-9665, E-ISSN 1618-5293, Vol. 13, no 4, p. 110-121Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In this article we argue that young people’s political participation in the social media can be considered ‘public pedagogy’. The argument builds on a previous empirical analysis of a Swedish net community called Black Heart. Theoretically, the article is based on a particular notion of public pedagogy, education and Hannah Arendt’s expressive agonism. The political participation that takes place in the net community builds up an educational situation that involves central characteristics: communication, community building, a strong content focus and content production, argumentation and rule following. These characteristics pave the way for young people’s public voicing, experiencing, preferences and political interests that guide their everyday political life and learning – a phenomenon that we understand as a form of public pedagogy.

    Abstract [en]

Participation as a pedagogy and democratic value turns out to be a critical element in students’ completion of school. Completed education is a regional development project in which a survey has been conducted in order to identify successful strategies to promote completed education in school. In an analysis, in the context of the survey, with an emphasis on school and participation as a pedagogy and democratic value, several findings are shown. It turns out that the importance of participation manifests itself through an emphasis on the societal and democratic mission of school; school ethos; the value praxis of school; pedagogical approach; and viewing the pupil as capable. It is, in more detail, shown that it is particularly crucial to understand the completion of school as a pedagogical problem; create sustainable institutional structures not bound to one person; and to make sure that students are participants in their own studies.

Young people's conversations about environmental and sustainability issues in social media2017In: Environmental Education Research, ISSN 1350-4622, E-ISSN 1469-5871, Vol. 23, no 4, p. 465-485Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Young people’s conversations about environmental and sustainability issues in social media and their educational implications are under-researched. Understanding young people’s meaning-making in social media and the experiences they acquire could help teachers to stage pluralistic and participatory approaches to classroom discussions about the environment and sustainability. The aim of the article is to explore the characteristics of meaning-making in young people’s conversations about environmental and sustainability issue in social media, more precisely in an online community. The study takes a public pedagogy and citizenship-as-practice approach and uses Epistemological Move Analysis. The conversation are shown to be argumentative, sophisticated, elaborative and competitive and create an educational situation in which facts about the world and moral and political values and interests are confronted and argued. The findings raise questions about pluralistic and participatory approaches and the staging of classroom conversations in environmental and sustainability education.

”Tjugo olika elever innebär tjugo olika sätt att lära”: en studie om elevinflytande och lärstilar2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Everyone has in some extent their own experiences of school; it means that thoughts and attitudes vary depending on who is asked. Awareness, communication and commitment are essential elements for the cooperation between home and school. The school has over time been characterized by different power configurations that contributed to the teachers' authority was granted. Today, school and parents both are responsible for children’s education, therefore it´s pedagogues’ personal characteristics that becomes the authority. The purpose of this study was to investigate how parents of children in grades 1-3 think about the collaboration between home and school. The study is based on parent surveys in three counties in central Sweden. The result shows that parents wants to bee involved in their child's schooling, conversations about school is a priority. The result indicates both similarities and differences based on respondents' gender, age and educational level. The compilation also reveals that schools profiling shines through in respondents' language. The study shows the pedagogues´ difficulties to meet all parents' views, while their opinions must be addressed. Pedagogues’ can´t possibly meet all the parents at the same time, while their views should not be taken for granted.

    1.   Introducción

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Measuring participants’ immersion in healthcare simulation: the development of an instrument2016In: Advances in Simulation, ISSN 2059-0628, Vol. 2016, no 1, article id 17Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

    Background

Immersion is important for simulation-based education; however, questionnaire-based instruments to measure immersion have some limitations. The aim of the present work is to develop a new instrument to measure immersion among participants in healthcare simulation scenarios.

    Methods

The instrument was developed in four phases: trigger identification, content validity scores, inter-rater reliability analysis and comparison with an existing immersion measure instrument. A modified Delphi process was used to develop the instrument and to establish validity and reliability. The expert panel consisted of 10 researchers. All the researchers in the team had previous experience of simulation in the health and/or fire and rescue services as researchers and/or educators and simulation designers. To identify triggers, the panel members independently screened video recordings from simulation scenarios. Here, a trigger is an event in a simulation that is considered a sign of reduced or enhanced immersion among simulation participants.

    Results

The result consists of the Immersion Score Rating Instrument (ISRI). It contains 10 triggers, of which seven indicate reduced and three enhanced immersion. When using ISRI, a rater identifies trigger occurrences and assigns them strength between 1 and 3. The content validity analysis shows that all the 10 triggers meet an acceptable content validity index for items (I-CVI) standard. The inter-rater reliability (IRR) among raters was assessed using a two-way mixed, consistency, average-measures intra-class correlation (ICC). The ICC for the difference between weighted positive and negative triggers was 0.92, which indicates that the raters are in agreement. Comparison with results from an immersion questionnaire mirrors the ISRI results.

    Conclusions

In conclusion, we present a novel and non-intrusive instrument for identifying and rating the level of immersion among participants in healthcare simulation scenarios.

Visualisering av loggdata: Jämförelse av prestanda vid inläsning av data med MySQL och MongoDB2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

In Sweden 200-250 children and youths are affected with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) every year. JIA is one of the most common causes of short-term and long-term disability and impairment of quality of life during childhood. The entire family is affected when a family member becomes ill. Aim: The aim with this study was to illustrate how a prolonged disease as JIA is experienced by children, youths and their families. Method: The method used was a general literature overview. In total 7 quantitative and 5 qualitative articles. Result: During analysis one main themes were identified. This was experiences of being different. The result showed that the experiences of living with JIA is individual but common for many of the families is a sense of being different. Conclusion: When a child or youth is struck by protracted disease, this also affects family members. The life situation is affected, and also the life situation for parents, brothers and sisters is changed. Every child and youth who is affected by JIA is unique, and has its own reality. As a nurse it is meaningful to see the entire individual, and to involve its family in to the nursing.

    Abstract [en]

Former studies show that people living in nursinghomes are often suffering from feelings of depression and loneliness. The staff working at the nursing homes is often occuped with daily chores and the time for social interaction with the residents are limited. This results in feelings of desolations and anxiety. Troughout the centuries, man have always depended on pets as a company and comfort. Studies show that general health improves when interaction with animals occur. The purpose of this study was to describe the staff’s opinion of a pet in nursinghomes and what influence or meaning it may have on the care of the residents. A qualitative interview study was made to examen the purpose of the study. Seven assistant nurses were interviewed. Results show that pets have a positive affect on human beings. They often make people around them feel more joyful and relaxed. The residents in nursing homes, who have experienced a pet living with them at the unit, have showed a calming, positive effect in their behaviour. Dogs and cats are among the most popular animals as a company because of the satisfaction of stroking and its friendly nature. Allergy, fear for some animals and the potential risk for the animal to cause injury to it self or others occurs. The authors acknowledge the need for futher research about animals involved in caregiving.

Kan sjuksköterskan hjälpa överviktiga barn och deras familjer : En litteraturöversikt2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

How women who have experienced one or more miscarriages manage their feelings and emotions when they become pregnant again: a qualitative interview study2012In: Scandinavian Journal of Caring Sciences, ISSN 0283-9318, E-ISSN 1471-6712, Vol. 26, no 2, p. 262-270Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate how women who have experienced one or more miscarriages manage their feelings when they become pregnant again.

Method:  Individual qualitative interviews were conducted with 16 women who were pregnant again after experiencing one or more miscarriages. The interviews were analysed using qualitative content analysis with an inductive approach.

Results: The analysis of the material ended up in five categories: distancing herself from her pregnancy, focusing on her pregnancy symptoms, searching for confirming information, asking for ultrasound examination and asking for professional and social support. Because of their past experience with miscarriage, it could be painful to have another pregnancy terminate in disappointment. Therefore, the women manage their feelings by distancing themselves from their pregnancies. Simultaneously, they are managing their emotions by seeking affirmation that their current pregnancy is normal.

Conclusion: Generally speaking, women manage their emotions by themselves. They feel isolated with their worries and concerns, and they are in need of the support provided from their intimate circle of friends and family as well as from the staff of the maternity health care ward. Unfortunately, the women do not feel that they get the support they need from the staff, instead they have to rely on their friends, family and partners to help them manage their emotions.

Vitamin and mineral status in elderly patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease2007In: Clinical Respiratory Journal, ISSN 1752-6981, E-ISSN 1752-699X, Vol. 1, no 1, p. 23-29Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Introduction: Eating problems are common in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and intake of micronutrients might be lower than recommended. Objective: To study dietary intake, serum and urinary concentration of trace elements and vitamins in elderly underweight patients with established severe COPD. Methods: Outpatients at a university clinic for lung medicine, with COPD, 70-85 years old, with no other serious disease, and with a body mass index (BMI) of similar to 20 kg/m(2) and an FEV(1) of < 50 % predicted were recruited. Body composition and bone density were evaluated with dual energy X-ray absorptiometry. Dietary intake was studied by a trained dietitian using diet-history interview. Blood and urine samples were analysed for various vitamins and trace elements. Results: Seventeen of 30 recruited patients took part. Osteoporosis or osteopaenia was found in 16 patients. Dietary intake of energy and macronutrients was in line with recommendations for healthy individuals. Intake of protein did not meet recommendations for COPD patients. Intake of polyunsaturated fatty acids was lower than recommended and intake of saturated fatty acids was higher than recommended. Mean intake of vitamin D and folic acid was far below recommendations. Serum concentrations for folic acid and methylmalonate and plasma concentrations for homocysteine were below normal in several patients. Conclusion: Intake of vitamin D and calcium is often low in older COPD patients, which might contribute to osteoporosis. Low intake of folic acid might also be a problem. The results support prophylaxis with calcium, vitamin D and folic acid.

Casting glamour: En fenomenologisk studie om HBTQ-personers uttryck av sexualitet och kön i Final Fantasy XIV2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Online games allow players all over the world to interact with each other in new ways in virtual worlds. Through the creation of visual representations of the players they can communicate and express themselves beyond the limits of the physical world. In this phenomenological study we investigate how and if LGBT individuals experience that they can express sexuality and gender identity in the online roleplaying game Final Fantasy XIV and if the game community affects this experience. With qualitative methods players of Final Fantasy XIV were interviewed to capture this experience and through a queer theoretical lens critically examine the norms of the game. These experiences were also analysed from a dramaturgical perspective and a focus on identity theories. The results suggest that the player, despite restrictions, find new and creative ways of expressing their sexuality and gender in the game world. The players do this by constructing alternative identities and perform with their avatars on the stage that is the virtual world. The community is a major part of this as the accepting atmosphere is perceived to encourage openness.

Prehospital smärtbedömning: En litteraturgenomgång2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

A great deal of the reports which arrives to the patient´s committee is about bad encounters. Patients who seek care at an emergency department should not feel inferior or unsafe because of a bad encounter from the nursing staff. A professional and caring encounter will give power and raise the wellbeing within the patient and that must be offered to the patient. A raised feeling of wellbeing might reduce the sense of bad health. The group of patients this study focuses on is the patients which arrive to the emergency department with a non urgent diagnosis. They often experience a lower rate of good encounters than the patients with an urgent diagnosis. The aim of this study was to highlight what´s important for the patient in the nurse-patient encounter in an emergency department. The search for literature was done in databases. A literaturereview was made from articles and an analysis was made where patient’s similarities and differences in the experience of the encounter sought out. The authors found twelve themes presented in possibilities and difficulties so that the patient will experience that the encounter I satisfying. The result shows that if the nurse’s take some time for the patient and gives them information, treats them as individuals and with respect, the patient feel empowerment to handle the situation. It is of importance for the nurse to understand how the patient experiences the encounter. A good encounter from the nurse can make the patient feel a raised wellbeing and a presence of health. This is a possibility for the patient to gain a feeling of better health.

Traditionella metoder eller abstrakt kreativitet?: En jämförelse av ljuddesign inom crafting och dess påverkan på spelupplevelsen2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
