Single-page applikation vs Multi-page applikation: En jämförelse av svarstider2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Exploring Underrepresented Narratives: Social Anxiety in Games2018Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 15 credits / 22,5 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This research focuses on pushing forward the understanding of mental disorders portrayals in games, more specifically social anxiety, which still lies as a marginalized topic in this medium. In order to understand honest manifestations of social anxiety in games, the first step is to conduct a close reading of games made by people who suffer from this mental disorder. A collection of five indie games, all of autobiographical nature and featuring social anxiety as an important part of their text, was put together for this analysis. This was done embracing the need to address the representational complexity, in order to tap into such a nuanced and elusive topic as social anxiety, not to identify rights or wrongs, but to engage in a discussion of how experiences are represented in games by people directly affected by this mental disorder. Individual experiences also contribute to expand interpretations and to identify additional keys of social anxiety representation. This is done by reaching informants, people living with a comorbid mental illnesses or disorders, that face or had faced social anxiety, and assess their perspectives through an experiential workshop. This work intends to further explore the practice of game design as mediator of experiences, contributing to both deepen the knowledge of game design and explore nuances of individual experiences present in autobiographical games and how this relates to perspectives of other people living with social anxiety. By combining the games and informants perspectives it is possible to structure a debate about game design patterns based on the findings of the game analysis and further elaborated with the nuanced perceptions gathered from informants. The knowledge acquired through this work is a step towards understanding of how games can represent, in an honest and non-stereotypical way, mental disorders, starting with social anxiety and, hopefully, contribute to spark other studies to broaden the spectrum of how the complexity of adverse mental conditions can be more respectfully addressed in games.

Evaluation and assessment of a generic computerized patient record system utilized by physical therapists in a primary care setting2004Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

Within the field of medical informatics, patient medical records are the sole source of information for dealing with clinical activities concerning the documentation, care, progression, and ongoing interactions between the patient and clinicians. Electronic or computer-based patient records (CPRs) have had a presence within health care in some form and magnitude for the past thirty years yet only recently have been incorporated in health care to a larger extent. Due to the wide variation of professions in health care, there is a problem of CPRs not being able to fulfill all the possibilities and demands the individual professionals need, since many CPRs are designed as a generic system, to be used across multiple professions.

The focus of this report is on the utilization of a generic CPR in a specialist clinical setting, i.e., a physical therapy clinic, and to analyze how the therapists utilize the different components and features in a generic CPR. The purpose of the evaluation was to investigate how viable the CPR was as a documentation tool and to which extent it supported the therapists in their clinical, documentation and delivery of care activities. In this study, a total of seven physical therapists participated in a post-usage evaluation of an existing CPR. The evaluation was achieved by interpretative research with open-ended interviews and observations. The results of the study showed that despite some shortcomings, the generic CPR was an effective tool for the clinicians, not only as a documenting aid, but also enabling them to quickly research the patients' prior diagnosis and treatment history, plan for future care, support decision-making and to communicate with other professionals so as to coordinate treatment and planning.

”Mitt KUB grumlade hela graviditeten”: Kvinnors upplevelser relaterat till genomfört KUB2018Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Background: The demand on prenatal diagnosis increases among expecting parents. CUB is the most common method for the matter but doesn’t provide any diagnosis. CUB only calculates the probability of a fetus with trisomy 13, 18 or 21. Women aren’t always aware of this. Hence, careful preparations and information are necessary. This study was performed to enhance knowledge in women’s experiences in relation to have undergone CUB. Aim: To describe women’s experiences related to having undergone CUB. Method: A qualitative content analysis with an inductive approach was used. Internet was used for data collection. This collection resulted in 10 threads from bulletin board Familjeliv.se and 12 blogs which became the base for data analysis. Result: The analysis resulted in one theme: CUB is seen as an opportunity to confirm the pregnancy but leads to mixed feelings which the midwives need to support in a trustful way. Anxiety and fear are the most common emotions mentioned among women who have undergone CUB. Women felt that midwives didn’t always provide enough information or the requested information. The encounters with midwives during CUB were described as stressful and even unpleasant. Conclusion: CUB is seen as an early way to confirm the pregnancy. To reduce the anxiety, midwives need to give individualised information. Anxiety tends to obscure the pregnancy and remain a long time.

First ever case report of co-occurrence of hobnail variant of papillary thyroid carcinoma and intrathyroid parathyroid adenoma in the same thyroid lobe2020In: International journal of surgery case reports, ISSN 2210-2612, E-ISSN 2210-2612, Vol. 70, p. 40-52Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Introduction: The hobnail variant of papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) is rare. Intrathyroid parathyroid adenoma (ITPA) is also rare. Co-ocurrence of PTC and ITPA in the same thyroid lobe is extremely rare. Likewise, primary hyperparathyroidism with such non-medullary thyroid carcinoma is rare. The specific molecular profile of hobnail PTC (HPTC) is different from the classic, poorly differentiated and anaplastic variants and may contribute to its aggressive behavior. HPTC's genetic profile remains unclear. Presentation of case: A 61-year-old woman presented to our endocrine clinic with generalized aches, bone pain, polyuria, and right neck swelling of a few months’ duration. Laboratory findings revealed hypercalcemia and hyperparathyroidism. Ultrasound of the neck showed 4.6 cm complex nodule within the right thyroid lobe. Sestamibi scan suggested parathyroid adenoma in the right thyroid lobe. Fine-needle aspiration (FNA) revealed atypical follicular lesion of undetermined significance. She underwent right lobectomy, which normalized the intraoperative intact parathyroid hormone levels. Final pathology with immunohistochemical stains demonstrated HPTC and IPTA (2 cm each). Next-generation sequencing investigated the mutation spectrum of HPTC and detected BRAFV600E mutation. Conclusions: A parathyroid adenoma should not exclude the diagnosis of thyroid carcinoma. Thyroid evaluation is needed for patients with primary hyperparathyroidism to prevent missing concurrent thyroid cancers. Cytomorphologic features to distinguish thyroid from parathyroid cells on FNA cytology must be considered. Immunohistochemical stains are important. BRAFV600E is the most common mutation in HPTC. This is possibly the first reported case of HPTC and ITPA co-occurring within the same thyroid lobe. Studies that define other molecular abnormalities may be useful as therapeutic targets. © 2020 The Author(s)

Perceptionen av ljud i en stadsmiljö: Kan det påverka uppfattningen av instruktioner?2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This is a dissertation for a Bachelor Degree Project at the University of Skövde. The project is carried out in cooperation with the company Kinnarps AB.

The objective of this project was to develop a new chair for café and lunch rooms, which should satisfy the markets expectations and demands and match Kinnarps AB’s assortment today. The project has contained everything from identification of user and customer needs and requirements to evaluation and building of a prototype.

The result is a chair with a frame of tubular steel and there is nothing like it in Kinnarps AB’s assortment today. The chair has a frame of tubular steel and separate seat and backrest, just like the chairs Jig and Tango as it is intended to replace. The chair’s extraordinary characteristics are that the shape of the backrest enables a good grip and the motion which encourages variation in sitting postures. The motion is new for this kind of chair both in Kinnarps AB’s assortment as well as on the market.

The product development process is an iterative process which can be described with the activities: identification of customer requirements, product design specification, initiation of concept solutions, evaluation, embodiment design and detail design. Knowledge about the customer requirements and needs is fundamental to a successful product. The result of the market research showed that the new chair should be a comfortable and inviting chair which is lightweight and simple with a timeless design and organic shape. It also came to our knowledge that it is very important that the chair is stackable, possible to hang on a table and linkable.

Different researchers’ literatures have been studied and an analysis has been made in SAMMIE to ensure that the chair has good ergonomics. This is a very important quality but often an unspoken requirement that is taken for granted.

The result was carefully evaluated during and after the building of the prototype. Kinnarps AB will also make further analysis and quality tests.

This project has hopefully resulted in a chair with good quality and a potential to participate in the competition on the market.

Gameplay Progression: Om skapandet av en jämn progression av spelmoment till dataspelet Testament2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Developing the Game Testament: Multiple Perspectives in Serious Game Development2010In: Proceedings of the IADIS International Conference on Game and Entertainment Technologies: Freiburg, Germany 26-30 July 2010 / [ed] Katherine Blashki, IADIS Press, 2010, p. 35-44Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article presents the process of creating the game Testament; an action role-playing game for PC which uses the Old Testament as its setting. The game is primarily designed for confirmation education in the Church of Sweden, with the purpose to create interest in the Old Testament. In this paper we describe our experiences with the process of creating a game  where  the  work  has  been  guided  by  three,  in  some  cases,  contradictory  goals:  the  educational  value,  the  source authenticity and the gaming entertainment.  Our  conclusion  is  that  clear  requirements  for  the  entertainment  must  be  created  as  a  counterweight  to  the  practical aspects' requirements, e.g. education and authenticity. To create requirements  for game experience, it can be useful to identify a game genre and find a game that can serve as a template. One consequence of the fact that a specific goal for entertainment and a very clear requirement on content existed was that a number of fundamental contradictions could be identified  (e.g.  narrative,  game  mechanics,  adaptation).  When  these  inconsistencies  were  encountered,  a  suitable approach could be chosen in order to reach a compromise. If an existing game used as a reference wasn't available, it is likely that the entertainment would have suffered for the benefit of the educational aspects and biblical authenticity.

Augmented Reality Framework for Supporting and Monitoring Operators during Maintenance Operations in Industrial Environments2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In an ever-changing and demanding world where short assembly and innovation times are indispensable, it is of paramount importance to ensure that the machinery used throughout the whole process of a product are in their best possible condition. This guarantees that the performance of each machine will be optimal, and hence, the process times will be the shortest possible, while the best quality products are obtained. Moreover, having a machine in an impeccable status permits making the necessary changes to it, in order to fulfil the requirements that a more advanced or complex product may have. Maintenance operations and their corresponding trainings have historically been time-consuming, and a vast amount of information has been transmitted from an expert to a newer operator. This means that there has been the need of working with experienced operators to secure that a good service is provided. However, different technologies like augmented reality (AR) have been shown to have a positive impact in the support and monitoring of operators in industrial maintenance operations. The present project gathers information in regard to the framework of AR, with the aim of supporting and monitoring operators in industrial environments. The proposed method consists on the development of an artefact, which would lead to a possible improvement of the already existing solutions. It is believed that the development of an AR application could grant the necessary aid to any operator in maintenance operations. The result of this suggestion is an AR application which superimposes visual information on the physical equipment.

Obligatorisk byrårotation: Påverkan på revisionskvaliteten och revisionens legitimitet2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Backgrounds: In 2016, mandatory audit firm rotation was confirmed as a new law for public interest entities into Swedish legislation. The definition of "public interest entities" include listed companies and certain financial undertakings. The mandatory audit firm rotation rule was included in the EU audit package. The idea with the audit package was to improve the audit quality and increase the auditor independence for the member states of EU. There was also a need to improve the legitimacy confidence in the audit after all the scandals that occurred. Previous research finds that there are both advantages and disadvantages with mandatory audit firm rotation. Some research shows that the audit quality increase by mandatory audit firm rotation, while some shows that the audit quality decrease. Thus, it is interesting to study the impact of mandatory audit firm rotation on audit quality and audit legitimacy.

Questions: How does the audit quality and the audit legitimacy affect by mandatory audit firm rotation?

Purpose: The purpose of the study is to investigate, form an auditor's perspective, how mandatory audit firm rotation affects audit quality and public confidence in the audit. The study thus aims to create an increased understanding about how audit quality and audit legitimacy are affected by mandatory audit firm rotation.

Method: The study's approach was qualitative and the data was collected by six semi-structured interviews. All informants have background in the audit profession.

Result and conclusion: The study shows that mandatory auditor rotation has a predominantly positive impact at the quality of the audit and the audit legitimacy. This applies to both financial undertakings and listed companies. Mandatory auditor rotation decreases the risk of counteracts long-standing relationships between the auditor and tha client. At the same time, knowledge of a company is lost when an audit firm rotation is implemented.

Cyber Security Training Perspectives2013Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Building comprehensive cyber security strategies to protect people, infrastructure and assets demands research on methods and practices to reduce risks. Once the methods and practices are identified, there is a need to develop training for the manystakeholders involved, from security experts to the end user. In thispaper, we discuss new approaches for training, which includes the development of serious games for training on cyber security. The identification of the theoretical framework to be used for situation and threat assessment receives special consideration.

    Abstract [en]

In order to identify needed skills and competencies for privacy and security, we propose a systematic process that maps privacy and security threats to related controls that are required to prevent, detect or remove such threats. This work suggests how to apply the process, while discussing how games and simulations can be used both to develop the desired behavior and to monitor the current competency level.

    Abstract [en]

There is a growing understanding that privacy is an essential component of security. In order to decrease the probability of having data breaches, the design of information systems,  processes  and  architectures  should  incorporate considerations  related  to  both  privacy  and  security.  This incorporation may benefit from the offering of appropriate training. In this way, this paper intends to discuss how to better offer training while considering new developments that involve both multimedia production and the “gamification” of training. The paper suggests the use in conjunction of two frameworks: the EduPMO Framework, useful for the management of large scale projects  that  may  involve  a  consortium  of  organizations developing multimedia for the offering of training, and the Game Development Framework, useful for the identification of the main components of the serious game for training on privacy by design to be developed as part of the training offering.

Metamodel Based Multi-Objective Optimization with Finite-Element Applications2018Doctoral thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

As a result of the increase in accessibility of computational resources and the increase of computer power during the last two decades, designers are able to create computer models to simulate the behavior of complex products. To address global competitiveness, companies are forced to optimize the design of their products and production processes. Optimizing the design and production very often need several runs of computationally expensive simulation models. Therefore, integrating metamodels, as an efficient and sufficiently accurate approximate of the simulation model, with optimization algorithms is necessary. Furthermore, in most of engineering problems, more than one objective function has to be optimized, leading to multi-objective optimization(MOO). However, the urge to employ metamodels in MOO, i.e., metamodel based MOO (MB-MOO), is more substantial.Radial basis functions (RBF) is one of the most popular metamodeling methods. In this thesis, a new approach to constructing RBF with the bias to beset a priori by using the normal equation is proposed. The performance of the suggested approach is compared to the classic RBF and four other well-known metamodeling methods, in terms of accuracy, efficiency and, most importantly, suitability for integration with MOO evolutionary algorithms. It has been found that the proposed approach is accurate in most of the test functions, and it was the fastest compared to other methods. Additionally, the new approach is the most suitable method for MB-MOO, when integrated with evolutionary algorithms. The proposed approach is integrated with the strength Pareto evolutionary algorithm (SPEA2) and applied to two real-world engineering problems: MB-MOO of the disk brake system of a heavy truck, and the metal cutting process in a turning operation. Thereafter, the Pareto-optimal fronts are obtained and the results are presented. The MB-MOO in both case studies has been found to be an efficient and effective method. To validate the results of the latter MB-MOO case study, a framework for automated finite element (FE) simulation based MOO (SB-MOO) of machining processes is developed and presented by applying it to the same metal cutting process in a turning operation. It has been proved that the framework is effective in achieving the MOO of machining processes based on actual FE simulations.

Metamodel based multi-objective optimization of a turning process by using finite element simulationArticle in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This study investigates the advantages and potentials of the metamodelbased multi-objective optimization (MOO) of a turning operation through the application of finite element simulations and evolutionary algorithms to a metal cutting process. The objectives are minimizing the interface temperature and tool wear depth obtained from FE simulations using DEFORM2D software, and maximizing the material removal rate. Tool geometry and process parameters are considered as the input variables. Seven metamodelling methods are employed and evaluated, based on accuracy and suitability. Radial basis functions with a priori bias and Kriging are chosen to model tool–chip interface temperature and tool wear depth, respectively. The non-dominated solutions are found using the strength Pareto evolutionary algorithm SPEA2 and compared with the non-dominated front obtained from pure simulation-based MOO. The metamodel-based MOO method is not only advantageous in terms of reducing the computational time by 70%, but is also able to discover 31 new non-dominated solutions over simulation-based MOO.

Radial basis functions with a priori bias as surrogate models: A comparative study2018In: Engineering applications of artificial intelligence, ISSN 0952-1976, E-ISSN 1873-6769, Vol. 71, p. 28-44Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Radial basis functions are augmented with a posteriori bias in order to perform robustly when used as metamodels. Recently, it has been proposed that the bias can simply be set a priori by using the normal equation, i.e., the bias becomes the corresponding regression model. In this study, we demonstrate the performance of the suggested approach (RBFpri) with four other well-known metamodeling methods; Kriging, support vector regression, neural network and multivariate adaptive regression. The performance of the five methods is investigated by a comparative study, using 19 mathematical test functions, with five different degrees of dimensionality and sampling size for each function. The performance is evaluated by root mean squared error representing the accuracy, rank error representing the suitability of metamodels when coupled with evolutionary optimization algorithms, training time representing the efficiency and variation of root mean squared error representing the robustness. Furthermore, a rigorous statistical analysis of performance metrics is performed. The results show that the proposed radial basis function with a priori bias achieved the best performance in most of the experiments in terms of all three metrics. When considering the statistical analysis results, the proposed approach again behaved the best, while Kriging was relatively as accurate and support vector regression was almost as fast as RBFpri. The proposed RBF is proven to be the most suitable method in predicting the ranking among pairs of solutions utilized in evolutionary algorithms. Finally, the comparison study is carried out on a real-world engineering optimization problem.

Radial basis functions as surrogate models with a priori bias in comparison with a posteriori bias2017In: Structural and multidisciplinary optimization (Print), ISSN 1615-147X, E-ISSN 1615-1488, Vol. 55, no 4, p. 1453-1469Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In order to obtain a robust performance, the established approach when using radial basis function networks (RBF) as metamodels is to add a posteriori bias which is defined by extra orthogonality constraints. We mean that this is not needed, instead the bias can simply be set a priori by using the normal equation, i.e. the bias becomes the corresponding regression model. In this paper we demonstrate that the performance of our suggested approach with a priori bias is in general as good as, or even for many test examples better than, the performance of RBF with a posteriori bias. Using our approach, it is clear that the global response is modelled with the bias and that the details are captured with radial basis functions. The accuracy of the two approaches are investigated by using multiple test functions with different degrees of dimensionality. Furthermore, several modeling criteria, such as the type of radial basis functions used in the RBFs, dimension of the test functions, sampling techniques and size of samples, are considered to study their affect on the performance of the approaches. The power of RBF with a priori bias for surrogate based design optimization is also demonstrated by solving an established engineering benchmark of a welded beam and another benchmark for different sampling sets generated by successive screening, random, Latin hypercube and Hammersley sampling, respectively. The results obtained by evaluation of the performance metrics, the modeling criteria and the presented optimal solutions, demonstrate promising potentials of our RBF with a priori bias, in addition to the simplicity and straight-forward use of the approach.

The effect of DLG knockout, vitamin D and probiotic treatment on Drosophila gene expression2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Background: Colorectal cancer is one of the most frequently diagnosed cancers today. Dlg is a tumor suppressor gene commonly silenced in cancer cells. Many colorectal cancer patients are subject to vitamin D3 deficiency and/ or an altered microbiome. Treatment using vitamin D3 or probiotics shown decreased cellular proliferation, invasiveness and induction of apoptosis. This study aimed to knockdown Dlg and map genetic interactions coupled to Dlg downregulation using a Drosophila model. Vitamin D3 and probiotic treatments were performed to investigate mechanism of action and capacity for Dlg rescue.

Result and discussion: After vitamin D3 treatment, PGRP-SB1 (p<0.0001) and Drsl2 (p<0.0003) expression was significantly increased. These genes are part of the immune related Toll pathway suggesting its activation. Dlg and Veli (p=0.0042) upregulation could tentatively be through vitamin D receptor regulation of Wnt-signaling pathway, or direct VDR interaction. Traf6 and MPK2 (p38α) (p=0.0049) expression increased after vitamin D3 treatment suggesting MPK2 activation through Traf6. Pro-apoptotic pathways through Fas or Bax and decreased survival through inhibition of Pi3K/Akt and Ras/Raf pathways are also possible outcomes of MPK2 activation. Probiotic treatment increased PGRP-SB1 (p<0.0001) without enhanced Drsl2 expression, possibly activating the Imd pathway. JNK-induced apoptosis through Erg (p<0.0001) induction was speculated and increased Dlg (p=0.0113) expression was seen after probiotic treatment.

Conclusion: Vitamin D3 and probiotic treatments increased Dlg expression. Genes linked to polarity, growth and apoptosis were also enhanced suggesting various mechanisms of action. Further studies concerning knockdown and treatments are needed to fully understand the true mechanisms of action and interactions.

Function Block Environment in Wise ShopFloor: Graphical User Interface2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Nowadays, accomplishing real time information applications is one of the goals that customers are looking for in the market. Furthermore, two essential features are required in this society to ensure the success of these applications: reusability and interoperability. The new standard of Function blocks [FB] is one efficient way to reach them. This new standard, whose use has considerably  increased,  consists  of  a  large  number  of  functionalities  divided  into  distributed shorter  codes.  In  fact,  that  is  why  function  blocks  are  different  from  other  programming languages:   it   works  with   short   distributed   functionalities   interconnected   among   them. Therefore,  for  this  reason  function  blocks  are  used  in  distributed  automation  systems.  The function  block  standard  is  formally  specified  in  IEC  61499,  for  distributed  Industrial  Process Measurement  and  Control  Systems  (IPMCS).  It  is  worth  of  mentioning  that  function  blocks design is usually carried out graphically (interconnecting data and events within a FB network), whose clarity and easiness are always significant requirements, as in any visual system. On  the  other  hand,  web-based  application  development  is  getting  more  and  more  common during the last years because of its efficiency, portability and flexibility. It also provides many advantages to users, in real-time monitoring, real-time manufacturing, or even remote control. These are what companies are looking for in the 21st century. Nevertheless, combining web-based programming with function blocks can be the key to companies’ success.  This project consists of implementing a web-based function block environment for IEC 61499 compliant  control  systems  development.  It  would  be  a  proper  way  to  meet  the  above mentioned    customer    requirements    (efficiency,    portability,    flexibility,    reusability    and interoperability).  The  main  objective  of  the  five-month  project  is  to  develop  a  web-based function block environment with a user-friendly graphical interface. The challenges include:   - Carrying out research on Function Blocks and its run-time environment. -  Implementing  an  easy-to-use  graphical  interface  for  creating,  saving  and  editing different types of function blocks (basic FB, composite FB and applications). - Introducing iconic design and visual presentation of function blocks and connections via drag-and-drop. -  Developing  an  application  to  generate  eXtensible  Markup  Language  (XML)  files, allowing  the  exchange  of  files  between  different  tools  and  devices  of  different vendors. This web-based function block environment will be used at Volvo Cars and Sandvik AB as a part of  a  big  research  program.  It  is  anticipated  that  the  function  block  environment  will  be extended  and  applied  to  a  real-time  decision  support  system  for  walking  workers  where important events or tasks will be distributed to the right person at the right time.

    Abstract [en]

During the autumn term of 2017, Jenny Ander and Matilda Johansson have performed a project in collaboration with Sea Ice AB in the course Degree Project in Integrated Product Development at the University of Skövde. Sea Ice AB is working on developing charging infrastructure systems for rechargeable vehicles with focus on end-user benefits, high quality and increasing sustainability for the environment. The company is aiming to grow larger in the market and, in the future, be able to deliver attractive products and services, which in this project has involved the development of a new vehicle connector for rechargeable vehicles.

During the project, vehicle connectors and CEE-plugs have been compared with each other, focusing on its internal components. The pre-study is based on literature studies where standards have been studied, ergonomics and user studies, questionnaires, electrical measurements, but mainly disassembly and analysis of vehicle connectors and CEE-plugs.

After the pre-study, the concept development of the vehicle connector began with design methods, FEA-analyzes, CAD and clay modeling, concept screening and detail design. The concept development resulted in a complete final concept for both internal components, but also an external shell with ergonomic grip surfaces and angles.

The final concept has been compared to the requirement specification and achieved the requirements set for the project, with some reservation for continued development. The vehicle connector has a unique and appealing appearance and meets the demands that both users and Sea Ice AB whished for.

Analysis of the effects of LIN7A and LIN7C upregulation and knockdown in neuroblastoma cells2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Background: LIN7 are a group of proteins that play a pivotal role in membrane protein localization and are thus important for cell adhesion and polarity. LIN7 proteins are shown to be important in neuroblastoma outcome, possibly through interactions with Disc-Large proteins (DLG). DLG2 has been shown to directly affect the regulation of LIN7A. Previous studies into the role of LIN7 have given conflicting results as to its nature.

Methods: In this study we transfected LIN7A and LIN7C in SK-N-AS cells through the use of plasmids for upregulation and siRNA for knockdown of these genes. We also evaluated the expression levels of specific genes related to pathways such as PI3K, autophagy/lysosomal activity, AKT, etc., both independently and related to LIN7 expression through the R2 platform. Genes of interest were selected and then analyzed through qPCR.

Results: Many of the genes that were significantly correlated when compared to LIN7A/C through R2 showed no significant expression correlation after experimentation. Some more functionally close genes to LIN7 were affected in a more predictable way such as CASK being upregulated after LIN7 knockdown, PTEN being downregulated upon LIN7 plasmid transfection while others such as FOXO3 also showed significant alterations.

Conclusion: Many of the pathways discussed in this study are better studied through protein analysis due to the nature of the function of LIN7 proteins, however some downstream transcript changes were analyzed. Unexpectedly, the knockdown of both LIN7A and LIN7C displayed similar behavior to upregulation of LIN7A or LIN7C, possibly meaning that extreme expression differences have similar regulatory outcomes for some affected genes.

A bioinformaticians view on the evolution of smell perception2006Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

    Background:

The origin of vertebrate sensory systems still contains many mysteries and thus challenges to bioinformatics. Especially the evolution of the sense of smell maintains important puzzles, namely the question whether or not the vomeronasal system is older than the main olfactory system. Here I compare receptor sequences of the two distinct systems in a phylogenetic study, to determine their relationships among several different species of the vertebrates.

    Results:

Receptors of the two olfactory systems share little sequence similarity and prove to be a challenge in multiple sequence alignment. However, recent dramatical improvements in the area of alignment tools allow for better results and high confidence. Different strategies and tools were employed and compared to derive a

high quality alignment that holds information about the evolutionary relationships between the different receptor types. The resulting Maximum-Likelihood tree supports the theory that the vomeronasal system is rather an ancestor of the main olfactory system instead of being an evolutionary novelty of tetrapods.

    Conclusions:

The connections between the two systems of smell perception might be much more fundamental than the common architecture of receptors. A better understanding of these parallels is desirable, not only with respect to our view on evolution, but also in the context of the further exploration of the functionality and complexity of odor perception. Along the way, this work offers a practical protocol through the jungle of programs concerned with sequence data and phylogenetic reconstruction.

Important building blocks of an Architectural Description Language2002Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

Software Architectures is an area that started to develop in the beginning of the 1990's. Through Software Architectures, software engineering developers have new improved opportunities for reusing, understanding, communication, analysis etc. To describe Software Architectures, Architecture Description Languages (ADLs) were proposed in the middle of the 1990's. There is not yet any common well-accepted definition of what an ADL really is. There are two tracks however; the first consider that an ADL's primary role is to provide formal syntax and a lower level of semantics; the second approach means that communication and understanding is the most important part for an ADL to play.

Because of the lack of a common definition, numerous ADLs have been developed, each with their own strengths and weaknesses and all reflecting their developers' view on what an ADL is. The problem with these ADLs is that they work in a standalone fashion and can not use the facilities of the other ADLs. ACME has been developed to solve this problem. ACME is an Architecture Description Interchange Language, which means that it can serve as a bridge between different ADLs, i.e. that one ADL can use the features of another ADL.

There are some software engineering researchers that consider ACME not to be an ADL, since ACME is the least common denominator of the present ADLs and is according to the researchers therefore not an ADL in itself. Therefore, in this report we will first compare ACME with other ADLs, and then present what features ACME needs to add to its environment to become an ADL.

Att främja sömn hos intensivvårdspatienter: En litteraturöversikt2010Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Musik i rollspel: Till vilken grad påverkar musik spelinlevelsen i ett pen and paper RPG?2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

According to the steering documents it is the teacher's responsibility to make every student feel safe. The aim is that through interviews with students in grades 2-3 from the focus groups show the factors that can provide security and insecurity in a schoolyard, in order to provide identifying factors that affect students' perception of security and insecurity. We also want to examine whether there are specific areas that constitute potential risk zones for students.

We began by doing a pilot study to test the questions. Subsequently we conducted interviews with students in grades 4-5. We have used a qualitative approach with focus interviews. Five focus interviews with five students at each interview were performed.

Our results show several factors that students either felt created security or insecurity. The factors identified as contributing to security was confirmation from friends, the game creates community, the size of the schoolyard and space for play, access to playmaterial, freedom to choose the activity and the teachers' presence. Factors that contributed to the insecurity was a fight, exclusion, vehicular and teachers' absence. Results also show where there is potential danger zones for students. Finally, the conclusions drawn about how security is tied to social interaction and a categorization of student statements from entirely safe to precarious was made.

In the discussion we reflect on the method chosen. Then discussed the results and the literature in relation to the problems that can arise when working with different students. Although the social interaction positive advantages and disadvantages discussed utanförskapets and the pedagogical implications affecting friend relations and conflict resolution. Finally, suggestions for further research.

Upplevelser av att leva med bipolär sjukdom: En självbiografisk studie2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Background: Bipolar disorder is a chronic disease that entails suffering for the individual. The disease characterized by recurrent manic and depressive episodes. It affects the individual's lifeworld and his or her's health experience. The nurse has a significant role to support these patients.

Aim: The aim is to describe patients' experiences of living with bipolar disorder.

Method: A qualitative method was used and was based on six autobiographies analyzed with meaning analysis.

Results: The results showed five themes. These are: the experience of living in the pitch-black darkness and the clearest light, the experience of shame, the experience of losing control of their life, the experience of fear and the sense of safty and support to reduce loneliness.

Discussion: People with bipolar disorder experience both health and illness, depending on their current state of disease. The family and society have an impact on how the individual experience their existence. With support from a nurse the person can achieve control of the disease. Their reality is constantly changing and support from a nurse is important.

Conclusion: People with bipolar disorder experience strong emotions that affect their lives. For people to feel seen and recognized the nurse must show candidness to the individual's unique lifeworld.

Dynamiska gränssnitt för dataspel2007Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Otydligheter i beskrivningen av Use Case-tekniken i UML 1.32001Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    * saknar stöd för på vilken nivå Use Cases skall utformas,

    * saknar bra exempel,

    * inte har tillräckligt fokus på syftet med Use Cases,

    * saknar stöd för hur Use Cases skall utformas,

    * inte beskriver skillnaden mellan generalisering och <<extend>>

    * inte beskriver skillnaden mellan <<include>> och <<extend>> tillräckligt väl.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to investigate students' perception of how computers are used in teaching. The question was to see if there are benefits, drawbacks, and if there are areas of change to use computers in teaching. Data Usage is increasing in today's society and in most schools, students get a private student computer use in education. Studies show that data usage will need to be individualized to better help the individual student. The wording of their school says that students should learn IT for their future profession and to better discuss with their consumers / patients. The method used is interviews. Six students in grades three to Health and care program in high school were interviewed. Four interviews were conducted in the study, three individual interviews and group interviews. The results indicate student computer means access to the student when it facilitates the ability to take notes. The computer prevents students in the teaching when it is watched on social media during class, making it difficult to focus on the teacher during the lesson. The computer makes it easier for students to organize their student records in a better way. The possibilities for change focused on improving their notes.

    Abstract [en]

The reason why the authors conducted this study was that breast cancer is one of the most common types of cancer among women. For most women the diagnosis means that the entire or parts of the breast will have to be removed. For most women the breast represents sexuality and femininity. The aim was to describe how female sexuality and sexual relationship change after breast cancer surgery and subsequent treatment. The method was a qualitative litterature review. The study resulted in three main categories: (1) a changed body – a changed sexuality, (2) a changed sexuality – a changed sexual relationship, (3) emotional changes in sexuality, and thirteen subcategories. The result shows that female sexuality changes physically as well as psychically. Most women experience changes in body image, decreased sexual desire and pleasure. Intercourse becomes painful which makes many women withdraw from their partner. Many women experience difficulties in communicating about their changed sexuality with their partner. The result also shows that sometimes health care providers give poor information to women about plausible side effects due to breast cancer surgery and subsequent treatment. Because many women with breast cancer experience sexual problems nurses should give better information about plausible side effects from the treatment and highlight these problems. Nurses should also enable conversations with women regarding their thoughts concerning their changed sexuality.

    Abstract [en]

The nuclear issue is highly topical after the Fukushima-accident and since the concept

of democracy is the foundation of the Swedish school, it's pertinent to question how

different forms of nuclear education is related to the democracy assignment. The

purpose of this study was to examine how some teachers describe their nuclear

education in relation to the democratic assignment and to create a roleplay about nuclear

power using the teachers' thoughts and the democratic engagement. The first part of the

study is based on interviews with high school teachers in science studies. They

described their nuclear education and their dictums were analyzed in relation to the

school's democratic assignment. The interviews revealed, not just factual about nuclear

education, but also goals that can be linked to the democratic engagement; students

should be able to argue, participate in public debate and take a position on the nuclear

issue. Some described the factual knowledge as the primary objective, others as a means

to achieve other objectives, such as the above. Respondents used different teaching

methods, most common were traditional theory lessons and discussions. Positive was

that the teachers pointed out many goals of democratic character, maybe because the

nuclear issue is a controversial social issue, which may have led to that it's being

considered a political issue. The study's second part was mainly based on literature and

advice from experts in role-playing. The results showed that the role play, in theory,

may develop important democratic skills and knowledge in students.

Kvinnors upplevelser av förändrad kroppsuppfatting och sexualitet efter mastektomi: En litteraturstudie2010Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer affecting women. The treatment of breast cancer may lead to forcing the woman to remove her breast. The breast is a symbol of femininity and sexuality for many women. The purpose of this literature-based study is to describe women's experiences of altered body image and sexuality after mastectomy. This may provide a better understanding of the nurse in responding to these breast cancer patients. The method used is a qualitative literature-based method, based on qualitative analysis of 13 articles. The results show that women undergoing mastectomy feel loss of part of the body, loss of sexuality and womanhood and that their bodies and sexuality are changing. Many women feel that their bodies have been mutilated and disfigured which leads to decreased sexual desire. The desire to feel normal again is great and to meet that many women undergoing breast reconstruction or prosthesis wear. Given that many women suffer as a result out of their changing body image and sexuality following a mastectomy, it is important that the nurse has knowledge of women’s experience of altered body and sexuality. The knowledge leads to better response from the nurse to patients' experiences of illness and suffering and to mitigate this as far as possible.

    Abstract [en]

It is becoming increasingly common for companies to publish sustainability reports. These aim to report the companies social, environmental and economical impact in a transparent and balanced way. Previous research has questioned the motives behind companies' work with CSR issues. Some argue that companies not only publish their sustainability reports to take responsibility for their impact, but also to use it as a marketing tool.

There is a strong link between the fashion industry and CSR-related questions, as the industry has an affect on both environmental, social and economic conditions in their production chain. With this in mind, this study aimed to examine the way in which fashion enterprises on the Swedish market present themselves in their sustainability reports. The aim was to create an understanding of what is reported and furthermore describe how the companies portray themselves. This in order to come to a conclusion whether companies use their sustainability reports as marketing material, or if the reports are produced solely as factual information. In order to answer the research question, the sustainability reports were analysed in two steps. Firstly, a qualitative description of each company was made in order to convey a comprehensive picture of the content of the sustainability reports. Moreover a quantitative content analysis was carried out, which treated factors as the “content”, “non-narrative information”, “business relationships”, “future hopes”, “actual behaviour”, “positive and negative revelations related to the company” and “the legitimisation of negative aspects”.

The study showed that fashion enterprises mainly present social information, and also that the content is primarily positive, which corresponds with previous research. Furthermore, images are used to a great extent in relation to the number of pages of the reports. In light of this the impression is that the companies chose to present themselves in a positive manner with tendencies towards marketing.

Användbarhetsaspekter i samband med systemutveckling1999Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Curriculum for the Compulsory School System, the Pre-School Class and the Leisure-time Centre (Lpo 94) is clear in its definition that individualized tuition shall be applied in the school and that the tuition shall come from the individual pupil’s needs. Since research emphasizes that the definition and meaning of the term needs is not clear we found it interesting to research how teachers define the meaning of the term individualized tuition in school year 1 with special focus on the aspect of pupils’ needs. In order to study active teachers’ reasoning and dictums regarding this we chose a qualitative method with interviews as aid to gather data. The collected material has been analyzed and subsequently discussed with reference to research within the area. The result shows that individualized tuition is regarded as a question of conditions. The identification of individual pupils’ needs is what is perceived to be the basis of how the education should be individualized. The difficulty lies in that it is not always easy to identify the needs. The result showed that the possibility to individualize bases itself in the access of resources and the school subject’s nature. The result also show that age integrated classes is an advantage considering the access of resources, since cooperation between coworkers makes it easier to enable individualized tuition.

Effekten av Mickey-Mousing i datorspel: En studie av Mickey-Mousing och dess effektivitet i dynamiska datorspel2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Towards a Reference Ontology for Business Models2006In: Conceptual Modeling - ER 2006: 25th International Conference on Conceptual Modeling, Tucson, AZ, USA, November 6-9, 2006. Proceedings / [ed] David W. Embley, Antoni Olivé, Sudha Ram, Springer, 2006, no 4215, p. 482-496Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Ontologies are viewed as increasingly important tools for structuring domains of interests. In this paper we propose a reference ontology of business models using concepts from three established business model ontologies; the REA, BMO, and e3-value. The basic concepts in the reference ontology concern actors, resources, and the transfer of resources between actors. Most of the concepts in the reference ontology are taken from one of the original ontologies, but we have also introduced a number of additional concepts, primarily related to resource transfers between business actors. The purpose of the proposed ontology is to increase the understanding of the original ontologies as well as the relationships between them, and also to seek opportunities to complement and improve on them.

    Abstract [en]

To create an understanding of enterprises and the ways they do business, a starting point could be to identify the main actors and the values transferred between them. Business models are created in order to make clear who the business actors are in a business case and to make their relations explicit. The relations are formulated in terms of values exchanged between the actors. The purpose of the work reported in this paper is to create a better understanding of business models by identifying basic notions used in such models. It does so by constructing a common ontology based on three established business model ontologies: e3-value, REA, and BMO. By means of a careful analysis of these ontologies a conceptual schema is created that defines the common concepts. An example is worked out that explains how the common ontology should be understood.

Effektiv uppdatering av datorspel med hjälp av filskillnader2007Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This study is based on an interest in trying to understand what is needed to ensure that students actually learn in a learning object, in this study equations. Algebra is an area of mathematics in several studies proved to be a stumbling block for many students. Using letters in mathematis is difficult for most students according to research reports and it is also consistent with my own experince as a teacher. The purpose of this study was to seek answers to what in the lesson content and also during the interview that allowed the students to learn more about the learning object. Based on students' prior knowledge and the difficulties students might have with the learning object and the offer of learning, I try to get an answer to what might have contribut the students to developed knowledge of the learning object. This qualitative study is based on a variation theory perspective. The two students who participated in the study attended the same class in high school. By using the theory of variation patterns, it made it possible for me to describe how students learn new things about the learning object, equations. To gain insight into how the students solved the data and developed new knowledge, I had the lesson content and their statements in the interviews to help me understand the difficulties in solving the equtionatask and what in the lessons that have contributed to new knowledge. The results show that pupils' understanding and difficulties in learning objects are relevant to how they can perceive, discern and assimilate new knowledge. One student was able to experience learning from their prior knowledge and assimilate what he had to develop in the variety in the offer of learning. The offered learning did not give the second student the same opportunity. The results indicates that the knowledge of students' prior knowledge, the difficulties the learning object can create and students' own narrative, I argue on the basis of the study'sresults, it is important knowledge for every teacher to be aware of befor the presentation of the lesson if it will give every student opportunities to learn.
