    Webbapplikationer blir allt mer lika desktopapplikationer vilket innebär att högre prestandakrav ställs på dessa. Ett sätt att möta dessa krav är att bättre utnyttja tillgänglig hårdvara med hjälp av parallellisering. Många webbapplikationer är implementerade i JavaScript. Ett nytt API kallat Web workers möjliggör parallellisering av JavaScript. Web workers har dock vissa begränsningar. Denna studie fokuserar på Web workers applicerat på webbapplikationer med partikelsystem. Partikelsystem har många olika användnings-områden vilket gör att dessa kan användas för många olika typer av tillämpningar. En tillämpning är fysiksimulering i applikationer med realtidsgrafik. Studien undersöker vilka prestandaeffekter tre olika parallelliseringsstrategier implementerade med Web workers ger för fysiksimulering med hjälp av partikelsystem i en webbapplikation. För ändamålet har en enkel applikation utvecklats vilken prestandamätningar utförts med. Resultatet visar att valet av parallelliseringsstrategi begränsas av kommunikationshastigheten till och från Web workers. Ett samband mellan prestanda och antal skickade meddelanden kan påvisas men behöver undersökas närmare.

    Under konferenser distribueras det ut mycket material mellan konferensarrangörerna och deltagarna. Idag sker det mesta av denna distribuering i pappersform. Genom att utnyttja den tekniken som finns inom datakommunikation kan datanätverk användas för att underlätta denna informationsspridning. I denna rapport har två olika nätverkstopologier undersökts för att se hur dessa kan användas för att tillgodose de önskemål som finns på kommunikation vid en konferens. De topologier som undersökts är trådbundna LAN samt spontana nätverk. Lösningen blev en hybrid av de olika tjänster som dessa båda topologier kan erbjuda.

    SOMWeb: Supporting a Distributed Clinical Community of Practice Using Semantic Web Technologies2009Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

    This thesis concerns supporting the collaboration and knowledge sharing of distributed clinicians of oral medicine, a sub-discipline of dentistry. The Swedish Oral Medicine Network (SOMNet) holds monthly telephone conferences where a group of clinicians discuss interesting and difficult cases, which distinguishes it from one-to-one teleconsultations. SOMNet can be seen as a distributed community of practice, that is, a group of people sharing a concern and who interact regularly to extend their individual and collective expertise. Related to this, several topics need further investigation: How can geographically distributed clinical collaboration be characterized? What is appropriate functionality for a Web-based system supporting such collaborations? What are the impacts of such systems on collaboration? Further, Semantic Web technologies, such as the Web Ontology Language (OWL), have been proposed as a means of enhancing knowledge sharing. What are benefits and limitations of using these technologies to encode domain knowledge in oral medicine and to support clinical collaboration, and what practical issues face developers? The developed system, SOMWeb, focuses on functionality for meetings and structured cases, and has been regularly used for three years. Interviews, observations, a questionnaire, system log analysis, and case analysis were used to study SOMNet's collaboration and identify system impacts. The documentation of the forms of collaboration in SOMNet can serve as a model for other groups of clinicians wishing to establish a distributed collaboration. SOMNet's meetings provide a necessary rhythm for the community and the cases give context to the clinicians' learning which point toward that the centrality of meetings and cases in a tool will benefit collaboration. Impacts on SOMNet's collaboration include enabling the participation of a wider range of clinics. Factors influencing this are the more accessible submission process as well as the increased tangibility of the collaboration. The thesis also provides recommendations for developers of systems supporting clinical collaboration and knowledge sharing. The use of OWL in examination descriptions has enabled reasoning over cases in the system to provide improved case browsing. At the same time, limitations were found in using OWL for examination templates. Based on the lessons learned in this development, the thesis provides recommendations for using Semantic Web technologies, which can be of value for other developers and to guide future research.

    Abstract [en]

    This article describes the modeling of clinical examinations in oral medicine using OWL. Based on experiences from our previous work and knowledge model, requirements for an ontology for examinations in oral medicine are identified. OWL can be used to address most, but not all, of the requirements. We found a lack of guidance for several design choices and for development of OWL ontologies at different levels of sophistication. However, using OWL gives us the ability to come back and refine the knowledge model after initial deployment.

    To support knowledge sharing between practitioners of oral medicine throughout Sweden, the SOMWeb system for community collaboration has been constructed, based on Semantic Web technologies. A large function of the system is to support the discussion of difficult and interesting cases at a monthly telephone conference. From our observations of these meetings, a the users’ responses to a questionnaire, and discussions with users, we find that many of the improvements that can be made to enable further use of the system relate to adding the use of context. Some initial thoughts on what would be relevant to represent in relation to context are given, such as the experience of the practitioner, the reason for adding a case to the system, and the current activity of the user. The long-term aims of this work is to identify aspects of context relevant to online communities of practice in healthcare, and to investigate how these contexts can be modeled using Semantic Web technologies.

    Medical ontologies like GALEN, the FMA or SNOMED represent a kind of “100% certain” medical knowledge which is not inherent to all medical sub-domains. Clinical radiology uses computerized imaging techniques to make the human body visible and interprets the imaging findings in a clinical context delivering a textual report. For clinical radiology few standardized vocabularies are available. We examined the definitions given in the glossary of terms for thoracic radiology published by the Fleischner Society. We further classified these terms with regard to their definitions in terms of (a) describing visible structures on the image itself, (b) referring to ontological entities of the body (anatomical or pathological), and (c) terms imposing knowledge on structures visible on the image, epistemologically representing ontological entities of the body. Each ontological/epistemological definition was rated on a scale of vague/weak-sound/strong and put in context with the evaluation comments for the use of the terms given in the glossary itself. The result of this distinction shows that clinical radiology uses many terms referring to ontological entities valid for representation in a medical ontology. However, many epistemological terms exist in the terminology which impose epistemological knowledge on ontological entities. The analysis of the evaluation comments reveals that terms classified as sound (ontologically) and strong (epistemologically) are evaluated higher than terms bearing vague or weak definitions. On the basis of this, we argue that the distinction between ontological and epistemological definitions is necessary in order to construct epistemologically-sensitive application ontologies for medical sub-domains, like clinical radiology, where knowledge is fragmented in terms of description, inferred from a description, concluded on the basis of imaging, or other additional information with varying degrees of certainty.

    This paper describes how Semantic Web technologies have been used in an online community for knowledge sharing between clinicians in oral medicine in Sweden. The main purpose of this community is to serve as repository of interesting and difficult cases, and as a support for monthly teleconferences. All information regarding users, meetings, news, and cases is stored in RDF. The community was built using the Struts framework and Jena was used for interacting with RDF.

    Detta arbete undersöker ett par olika tekniker för att implementera single sign on med Kerberos i webbapplikationer. Undersökningen har gjorts på HTTP-autentisering som bygger på Microsofts NegotiateAuth och Cosign från University of Michigan. Dessa två tekniker har undersökts för att se hur de står sig mot varandra på kriterier såsom komplexitet, arbetsinsats och mjukvarukrav.Resultatet visar att HTTP-autentisering är väldigt simpel att implementera men kräver dock att användarens webbläsare konfigureras för den. Cosign är mer komplext men använder sig av Cookies vilket gör att de flesta webbläsare stödjer tekniken utan extra konfiguration.

    Abstract [en]

    Information is a vital part for most organizations, not least for state agencies as they handle personal data for every citizen, such as medical records, social security numbers and other sensitive information. It is therefore critical to protect the information assets at a sufficient level according to its value. Information security aims to do this by preserving the properties of confidentiality, integrity and availability of the information. This means that accurate and complete information shall be accessible and usable by an authorized entity upon demand. Swedish state agencies are obliged to manage their information security by the implementation of an information security management system (ISMS). The ISMS has to be set up and operated in compliance with the international standards ISO/IEC 27001 and ISO/IEC 27002, but these standards are somewhat vague in describing how to perform certain procedures. One part of the ISMS consists of the process of classifying the information, a process that according to the result from a survey by the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency (MSB) is troublesome (MSB, 2014), especially for smaller-sized agencies. In this classification process, a classification scheme is used to determine the consequences to the organisation if the confidentiality, integrity or availability of the information is jeopardized. The result of this process determines the level of protection that each piece of information asset will receive at a later stage. It is vital to classify the assets at a suitable level to avoid over or under classification, as the former can lead to unnecessary costs and difficulties in using the assets, and the latter can put the asset at risk of unauthorized access. The interest from the academic world have however been low regarding research focused on the 27000 series of standards, compared to the more mature ISO/IEC 9000 and ISO/IEC 14000 series. This thesis project aims to investigate how the classification scheme has been simplified and to identify enabling factors from the development and use of simplified classification schemes. The research questions for this thesis project are:

    In which ways have a number of Swedish state agencies simplified their information classification schemes?

    Which factors have influenced the development and use of a simplified classification scheme?

    A mixed method, an embedded case study, was used, including both a review of existing information security policies for the state agencies to gather information about current information classification models and schemes, as well as interviews with the chiefs of information security for the state agencies regarding the development and usage of a simplified information classification scheme. In total, 120 documents from 81 agencies were reviewed and 7 interviews were completed. The results from the study shows that the state agencies that have simplified their classification scheme do so by focusing on one aspect: confidentiality. The agencies motivate this by a number of reasons:

    • The aspects integrity and availability are regarded complex and difficult for the end user to relate to and classify. In order to simplify for the end user these aspects are handled by the IT department and the IT environment
    • The integrity and availability aspects are more or less built into the IT environment and thus handled automatically as long as the end user correctly classifies the information asset according to the confidentiality aspect and handles the information according to the handling guidelines

    The study also shows the need for a national, common set of handling guidelines and consequence levels for the classification scheme as this would simplify and improve the security in communication between the state agencies

    Model driven development has several advantages over traditional development, including simplified maintenance. We demonstrate an architecture which, through model driven engineering, allows heterogeneous distributed development of components in a mechatronics application. Key to the approach is an architecture which allows automated and dynamic component integration, together with model sharing through the transformation of XMI files.

    XMI is a standardized format for model interchange between tools. However, XMI-based interchange currently has one great disadvantage: an XMI file exported from one tool is unlikely to import correctly into a different tool. This makes XMI unusable for moving models around in a heterogeneous development environment, leading to increased maintenance problems. We suggest using specialized XSLT transformations to bridge between the XMI dialects of tools, and report on an industrial case study in which the technique has been successfully applied.

    I detta arbete undersöks det hur en NoSQL-databas presterar jämfört med en relationsdatabas när kommunikation sker med en webbapplikation. Testning sker med hjälp av en PHP-applikation och Ajax för att simulera användningen av en webbapplikation. Den data som kommer lagras i databaserna kommer vara strukturerad och databaserna kommer vara på ett odistribuerat system. Metoden är teknikorienterade experiment men för framtida arbeten kan dessa tester utföras som en fallstudie för att ytterligare simulera en skarp användning av en webbapplikation.I detta arbete förklaras anledningen till framtagningen av NoSQL-databaser. Saker som diskussionen om att NoSQL kommer ta över platsen som de mest använda databaserna från relationsdatabaser tas också upp. Förhoppningsvis kan detta arbete ge viss insikt till den diskussionen.Resultatet av detta arbete visar att NoSQL kan passa bra för databaser som har en last som ärskriv- och uppdateringstung, men också att relationsdatabaser fortfarande passar bra i många fall.

    e-lärande handlar om hur man ska ha tillgång till lärandeinformation vart man än är, oberoende enhet så länge internetuppkoppling finns. Adaptivt test är ett test som kontrollerar användarens kunskaper för att kunna anpassa t.ex. läroinnehållet efter användarens kunskaper. Live-programmering är då användaren kodar i ett program som ger direkt feedback på vad koden gör.

    Problemet består utav att utforma en algoritm och en datastruktur som kan utnyttja den data som erhålls från en live-programmerings-miljö för att kunna genomföra ett adaptivt test. Undersökningen kommer att ske i en webbläsare med hjälp av live-programmering.

    Implementationen av arbetet sköts smidigt genom att programmera en hemsida där användaren får testa de olika algoritmerna. Användaren får skapa ett konto, logga in och göra de olika stegen i olika tester.

    Resultatet visade att det fanns en liten skillnad mellan algoritmerna. I framtida arbete går det främst att utveckla algoritmen och fixa buggar.

    The composite event detection process in different consumption modes has been proven to be difficult to comprehend. It is believed that visualization of this process can make it easier to grasp. In this final year project, a prototype of a visualization tool that visually displays the composite event detection is developed. The prototype uses time graphs to display the composite events and the chronicle consumption mode is used in the detection of the composite events. Animation is used in the prototype when the composite events are visualized, as it is believed that animation can be of help when learning complex algorithms, such as consumption modes. The prototype is then compared with other similar visualization tools. This prototype addresses factors, which have been identified as playing a central role in the visualization of composite events, that other similar visualization tools do not.

    Denna studie är ämnad att undersöka vad som får ett spel att upplevas som rättvist och strävar efter designriktlinjer som leder till rättvisa spel. Studien utgår från en filosofisk bakgrund och försöker att finna samband med diskussionen om rättvisa i spel som existerar, men fokuserar specifikt på interaktion mellan spelaren och spelmekaniken.För studien har ett digitalt kortspel utvecklats enligt designriktlinjer baserade på egalitarianism och meritbaserade förtjänstprinciper. Olika spelmoment har designats för att skapa en kontrast som kan användas för att jämföra resultaten av att följa de olika designriktlinjerna.Spelet spelades av tio testpersoner som fick spela igenom alla spelmomenten och sedan svara på intervjufrågor om spelupplevelsen. Resultaten antydde att det finns olika uppfattningar om vad rättvisa innebär även i spel, men att meritbaserade belöningssystem ansågs mer underhållande än egalitarianistiskt rättvisa system och att uppfattad rättvisa skiljer sig i tävlingar mot människor och datorer.

    Detta arbete undersöker möjligheterna med att simulera mikrovågor i ett slutet system. Systemet implementeras med en redan befintlig teknik kallad ray tracing. Ray tracing är en ljussättningsteknik som går ut på att simulera fotoners rörelse mellan ljuskälla och betraktare i en miljö man önskar ljussätta, och sedan belysa de områden som blir träffade för att på detta vis rendera en bild. Fotoner och mikrovågor har egenskaper som liknar varandra då de båda är elektromagnetism med olika våglängder. Ray tracing är en krävande algoritm då många uträkningar för varje foton måste utföras varje uppdatering. Därför har algoritmen implementerats med CUDA, ett bibliotek från Nvidia som gör det möjligt att använda GPU:n som ett generellt beräkningssystem. Detta är lämpligt för just den här typen av problem då GPU:ns arkitektur är ämnad för multipla, parallella uträkningar.

    Abstract [en]

    Software is all around us in our lives in the industrialized world, and we as a society and individuals need it to function correctly. Software testing fills the role of performing behavior audits, to guide the correction of the software to its intended behavior. The consequences of faulty software can range to the late arrival of trains, to nuclear meltdowns.

    This places quality requirements on the software of various levels. Program based mutation testing provides a high level of faultfinding capability. It does this by injecting many synthetic faults into the code under test, as described by mutation operators. These faults are used to search for testcases that would identify such faults, and consequently find real faults that the synthetic faults mimic.

    However, mutation testing is costly on three accounts; each mutant of the original code is compiled, each mutant should ideally have an associated testcase to reveal that fault the mutant contains, finally the testcases are analyzed thoroughly by looking the output of the original and mutants to reveal the error in behavior.

    In order to reduce cost while maintaining a high level of faultfinding, selective mutation testing is investigated, it uses a subset of all the available mutation operators. The investigation found that using Absolute value-, and Relational operator-, mutation reduces cost of mutation testing by 80%, while uncovering 83% of the injected faults.

    Abstract [en]

    This thesis compares the remote desktop protocol Spice to NX and VNC taking into consideration user experience when viewing multimedia content. By measuring the quality of the protocols by viewing a video in a slow-motion benchmark compared to ordinary speeds it is shown that Spice has a low video quality compared to VNC. It is likely that due to a large amount of data sent, Spice does not manage to reach a high quality user experience.

    Business through e-commerce has become popular recently due to the massive amount of information available on internet. This has resulted in the abnormal number of reviews on websites like www.amazon.com  and www.ebay.com, where customers express their opinions about the purchases they have made. Analyzing customer’s behavior has become very important for the organizations to find new market trends and insights. For the potential customer  it becomes really difficult to get the knowledge about a product in the presence of such huge number of reviews and to sort the useful reviews and make good decision. The reviews available on these websites are in heterogeneous form i.e. structured  and unstructured form and needs to be stored in a consistent format. Since good decision requires quality information in limited amount of time, Yaakub et, al.(2011) have  proposed an ontology that uses a  multidimensional model to integrate customer’s characteristics and their comments about products. This approach first identifies the entities and then sentiments present in the customers reviews related to mobiles are transformed into an attribute table by using a 7 point polarity system (-3 to 3). The research proposed by Yaakub et, al.(2011) is in developing stage. The limitation of their approach is that the ontology proposed by them is too general. The authors have shown their desire that it should be tested for a large group of products. Also, Yaakub et, al.(2011) have used very short and simple comments for the manual extraction of features for which a sentiment has been expressed. Usually comments present on e-commerce websites are not that short and simple.

    In order to fulfill the aim of this thesis project, a case study has been conducted on websites www.amazon.com and www.ebay.com and the ontology proposed by  Yaakub et, al.(2011) has been refined for the three categories of mobile phones: smart phones, wet and dirty mobile phones and simple mobile phones. Further, sentiment analysis has been conducted by first using the ontology proposed by Yaakub et, al.(2011) and then by using the refined version of the ontologies for the three categories of mobile  in order to compare the results.

    Based on the link between Sugeno integrals and fuzzy measures, we discuss several algebraic properties of discrete Sugeno integrals. We recall that the composition of Sugeno integrals is again a Sugeno integral, and that each Sugeno integral can be obtained as a composition of binary Sugeno integrals. In particular, we discuss the associativity, dominance, commuting and bisymmetry of Sugeno integrals.

    I detta examensarbete har en studie av svenska små och medelstora företag som genomfört en satsning på Internet genomförts. Studien hade till syfte att undersöka vilka resonemang som föregått olika företags satsning på Internet och huruvida företagen uppfyllt sina målsättningar med sin satsning.

    För att skaffa mig en bättre överblick av problemet och för att kunna definiera problemställningen, så studerades tillgänglig litteratur och tillämplig information inhämtades från Internet. För att sedan besvara problemet och de problemställningar som identifieras i kapitel 3 så genomfördes två intervjuomgångar med olika inriktningar. Den ena intervjudelen inriktades mot reklambyråer som skapar WWW-platser åt andra företag. Den andra intervjudelen genomfördes med svenska små och medelstora företag som etablerat närvaro på Internet.

    En del av slutsatserna består av att företagen inte planerar speciellt mycket innan de påbörjar processen med att etablera närvaro på Internet och att det kanske till viss del beror på att företagen ser det som en relativt låg kostnad för en Internetsatsning, jämfört med andra typer av marknadsföringskostnader. De undersökta företagen uppger sig vara generellt sett nöjda med sin Internetsatsning.

    I slutet av denna rapport så återfinns diskussionskapitel med reflektioner över intresseområdet och uppslag till ytterligare arbeten inom området.

    Grafiska användargränssnitt (GUI) utgör en viktig del hos många programvaror. En vanlig verifieringsteknik för programvara är testning, vilket ofta upptar mycket tid inom utvecklingsprojekt.  En ansats till en effektivare testning med högre kvalitet är testautomation. Att automatisera tester för GUI:n är ofta svårt men värdefullt. Ett vanligt problem är att verktyg med otillräcklig funktionalitet införskaffas för automatiseringen, vilket kan bero på bristfälliga utvärderingar.

    I den här rapporten presenteras kriterier som kan användas vid en utvärdering av automatiserade GUI-testningsverktyg, vilka kan öka chanserna för att rätt verktyg införskaffas. Dessa kriterier har identifierats genom en litteraturstudie och fallstudie. Kriterier för urval av verktyg för utvärdering, selektionskriterier, har kategoriserats enligt ISO/IEC 9126, och utvärderingskriterier utifrån testprocessen. Delar av kriterierna har utvärderats i en fallstudie för två Capture & Replay verktyg. Utifrån fallstudien går det att konstatera att åtminstone delar av kriterierna kan användas, och att de ger värdefull information vid en utvärdering.

    Syftet med detta arbete är att undersöka hur dynamisk svårighetsjustering påverkar hur spelare värderar ett spels svårighet, presterar under en spelsession och huruvida de kan upptäcka ett system för sådan justering samt identifiera hur det fungerar.  Arbetet vilar främst på Robin Hunickes arbete kring dynamisk svårighetsjustering men vidrör även koncept som svårighet, flow och olika typer av svårighetsjustering. För att undersöka huruvida system för dynamisk svårighetsjustering påverkar spelande har ett plattformsspel utvecklats och speltestats i två versioner av en handfull respondenter, en version som justerar svårigheten i spelet dynamiskt och en som balanserats för hand. Resultatet från dessa speltester ger inga direkta stöd för att dynamisk svårighetsjustering får spelare att prestera bättre och tyder på att spelare vid en första spelomgång har svårt att identifiera system för dynamisk svårighetsjustering. Resultatet visar dock även på att mer undersökningar kan behövas på ämnet i framtiden.

    Abstract [en]

    Filtering out and replying automatically to emails are of interest to many but is hard due to the complexity of the language and to dependencies of background information that is not present in the email itself.

    This paper investigates whether Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) combined with Random Forest classifier can be used for the more general email classification task and how it compares to other existing email classifiers. The comparison is based on the literature study and on the empirical experimentation using two real-life datasets. Firstly, a literature study is performed to gain insight of the accuracy of other available email classifiers. Secondly, proposed model’s accuracy is explored with experimentation.

    The literature study shows that the accuracy of more general email classifiers differs greatly on different user sets. The proposed model accuracy is within the reported accuracy range, however in the lower part. It indicates that the proposed model performs poorly compared to other classifiers. On average, the classifier performance improves 15 percentage points with additional information. This indicates that Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) combined with Random Forest classifier is promising, however future studies are needed to explore the model and ways to further increase the accuracy.

    Webbservrar på Internet använder idag dynamiska webbsidor genererade med hjälp av databassystem för sina användare. Detta har lett till en stor belastning på webbservrar och en metod för att minska belastningen är att använda cachning. Detta arbete implementerar och utför tester på en specifik cachningsalgoritm kallad Online View Selection i ett webbspelsscenario. Ett potentiellt problem identifieras hos algoritmen som kan leda till att inaktuell information levereras till klienten och algoritmen modifieras för att hantera problemet. Testresultaten visar att både den modifierade algoritmen och originalet ger likvärdig prestanda. Den modifierade algoritmen visar sig fungera men problemet med den ursprungliga algoritmen uppkommer sällan i webbspelsscenariot.

Rapporten utvärderar två olika deferred pipelines som hanterar transparent geometri på olika sätt, de två renderingsmetoderna är Inferred Lighting samt Light Pre Pass med framåtrendering för hantering av transparent geometri.

    De senaste åren har molekylärbiologisk data växt explosionsartat. Ny teknik gör att information kan härledas ur data snabbare och mer än tidigare. Faktum är att det tillkommer så mycket ny data att de nya resultaten inte längre kan publiceras i artiklar. Dessa sekvenser av data finns istället bara åtkomliga i speciella databaser. Dessa databaser är tillgängliga för allmänheten dels genom att ladda ned dem eller att använda en Internet browser.

    Det har, för ett par år sedan, kommit en ny standard för att strukturera upp och lagra data på. Detta nya sätt är XML. Det har föreslagits att XML skall ersätta eller ta över delar av de databaser som finns då XML skall vara ett bättre sätt att strukturera upp och lagra molekylärbiologisk data.

    Det finns däremot inga forskningar som direkt har undersökt hur bra XML är jämte andra databaser när det gäller Molekylärbiologisk data.

    Detta arbete skall ge en närmare inblick i hur bra databaser och XML kan hantera representation och lagring av sekvensdata som DNA och proteiner, då data av den sorten innehåller väldigt mycket information och är svår att representera.

    Resultaten kommer att visa att XML inte är riktigt tillräckligt bra för att ersätta de äldre databaserna. Resultaten kommer dessutom också att visa att de äldre databaserna, även om de är de bästa för tillfället, inte är perfekta för ändamålet att lagra sekvensdata.

    The Effects of Using Results from Inversion by Evolutionary Algorithms to Retrain Artificial Neural Networks2000Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

    The aim of inverting artificial neural networks (ANNs) is to find input patterns that are strongly classified as a predefined class. In this project an ANN is inverted by an evolutionary algorithm. The network is retrained by using the patterns extracted by the inversion as counter-examples, i.e. to classify the patterns as belonging to no class, which is the opposite of what the network previously did. The hypothesis is that the counter-examples extracted by the inversion will cause larger updates of the weights of the ANN and create a better mapping than what is caused by retraining using randomly generated counter-examples. This hypothesis is tested on recognition of pictures of handwritten digits. The tests indicate that this hypothesis is correct. However, the test- and training errors are higher when retraining using counter-examples, than for training only on examples of clean digits. It can be concluded that the counter-examples generated by the inversion have a great impact on the network. It is still unclear whether the quality of the network can be improved using this method.

    Elektroniska affärer innebär att affärssystem kopplas upp mot varandra i nätverk för att effektivisera överföringen av information. I dag skickar företag standardiserade meddelanden direkt mellan administrativa system för t.ex. order, lager och fakturering (OLF). Detta kallas EDI, Electronic Data Interchange, och följer i de flesta fall en standard för elektroniska meddelanden som kallas EDIFACT. Användningen av EDIFACT kräver mycket kunskap vilket ofta småföretag saknar. Internet har inneburet ett nytänkande och ifrågasättande av existerande mönster även inom EDI. Den välkända EDIFACT-standarden för elektroniska meddelanden har nu fått konkurrens av XML.

    I detta examensarbete utreds orsakerna till varför företag idag använder EDIFACT och inte XML. Jag har genomfört intervjuer för att studera orsakerna. Resultatet som framkommit är att det finns flera orsaker, som gör att företag idag använder EDIFACT. För det första är EDIFACT en standard som de flesta i Sverige använder. För det andra vill företag inte överge en fungerande EDI-standard för att investera till en ny standard t.ex. XML/EDI. Men företag är medvetna om fördelarna med XML/EDI och vill se dess spridning.

    Testability and Software Performance: A Systematic Mapping Study2016Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

    In most of the research on software testability, functional correctness of the software has been the focus while the evidence regarding testability and non-functional properties such as performance is sporadic. The objective of this study is to present the current state-of-the-art related to issues of importance, types and domains of software under test, types of research, contribution types and design evaluation methods concerning testability and software performance. We find that observability, controllability and testing effort are the main testability issues while timeliness and response time (i.e., time constraints) are the main performance issues in focus. The primary studies in the area use diverse types of software under test within different domains, with realtime systems as being a dominant domain. The researchers have proposed many different methods in the area, however these methods lack implementation in practice.

    Prestanda är idag en av de viktigaste faktorerna för en webbapplikation. Då mer och mer tid för en webbapplikation idag dock läggs på att hämta data från t.ex. en databas, krävs tekniker för att effektivisera hämtningen av data. En teknik som kan användas för detta är cachning, som dock ställer ett antal utmaningar. T.ex. är det svårt att veta vart cachen ska implementeras för bästa prestandavinst, eller att veta vilken cachningsalgoritm som ska väljas för bäst prestandavinst.I det här arbetet undersöks hur prestandan påverkas av val av plats för cachen, samtidigt som det undersöks hur viktig cachningsalgoritmen är för resultatet. Undersökningen görs genom en fallstudie där cachning implementeras i ett verklighetsbaserat system och testats med olika cachningsalgoritmer. Resultaten för fallstudien visar att cachning ger en tydlig förbättring av prestandan där val av plats är den utslagsgivande faktorn för resultatet. Val av algoritm gav för denna studie inget utfall.

    Abstract [en]

    Computer-Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW) is a growing field, which aims at facilitating, by means of technology, coordination and communication between people, working together. One problem within the area is that users often have problems learning the systems. Activity theory, a theoretical framework often used within CSCW, includes theories of learning, which however, have received relatively little attention within CSCW. Activity theory, as developed by Leont'ev, stems from Vygotsky's cultural-historical theory, and has been further developed by Gal'perin. In this thesis the theories of learning in the works of Vygotsky, Leont'ev, and Gal'perin in particular, have been applied to CSCW in order to investigate the contribution these theories can make to support learning within CSCW. Several conclusions are drawn from the theories analysed in this thesis. To begin with, learning should take place in social settings. Learners also need to be motivated to learn and need to be oriented in the learning task before performing the action to be learned. They need to be guided by a teacher, who asks guiding questions during the learning process. It is of importance that the learner performs the action to be learned him- or herself and describes, both verbally and quietly, what he or she is doing. During the performance of the action, the learner should manipulate material or materialised objects. The conclusions from the analysis are summarised in a number of guiding principles for CSCW system training that may provide a theoretical starting point for taking a closer look at learning problems pointed out within CSCW.

    This thesis presents a comparison among two different open-source company-solutions, taking into account the cost, performance and functionality. The compared open-source solutions are: LTSP and Openthinclient. The thesis also explains the normal client/server environment, fat- and thin-client environments and the concept of cloud computing.

    Giving a final answer to which product is the best is a challenging task since they both have strong and weak sides. Depending on what the customer is after when looking to invest into an open-source alternative of thin-client solutions, the result will be different.

    Detta arbete undersöker möjligheten att reducera minnesanvändningen av Ozcan och Haciomeroglus (2015) navigationsmodell genom att byta den underliggande grafen. Navigationsmodellen baseras på A* men lägger till potentialvärde för cellerna samt riktningsvektorer som visar hur cellerna används och med dem beräknar fram en väg som följer flödet i cellerna.

    Arbetet försöker reducera minnesanvändningen genom att byta från en rutnätsgraf till en navigationsgraf med bibehållen funktionalitet. Undersökningen jämför mängden minne som allokeras för de två graferna samt tiden och längden det tar för agenterna att ta sig från start till sin slutpunkt på de två olika miljöerna.

    Resultaten visar att det går att reducera mängden minne som allokeras genom en navigationsgraf samt att tiderna och längderna för agenter är lika mellan graferna vilket visar att funktionaliteten kvarstod efter grafbytet.

    Abstract [en]

    There are several weaknesses in the popular transport protocol TCP (Transmission Control Protocol). A possible replacement to TCP would be the newer protocol SCTP (Steam Control Transmission Protocol). This thesis presents three different proposed implementations of SCTP: HTTP over SCTP, online games over SCTP and IP mobility over SCTP. The proposed implementations are analyzed, based on relevant literature, and recommendations are issued on the importance of moving forward with them.

    The result of the thesis is that HTTP over SCTP is recommended. SCTP features such as multi-streaming, multi-homing and the four-way handshake addresses the inherent weaknesses with using TCP for HTTP traffic. IP mobility over SCTP is also recommended since it results in lower delay in the handover process compared to MIPv6 (Mobile IPv6). Online games over SCTP, however, is not recommended since the existing implementations of SCTP results in poor latency for the kind of traffic online games produce.

    Det moderna samhället styr mot ökad konkurrens, globalisering och en högre affärskomplexitet. Detta medför att behovet av snabb tillgång till önskvärd information bland verksamheter ständigt ökar. För att mätta denna typ av behov använder sig fler och fler verksamheter av datalager. Att utveckla och hantera ett datalager är dock inte problemfria processer.

    I detta arbete kommer framgångsfaktorer för hela datalagrets livscykel att studeras. Först genomförs en litteraturstudie där framgångsfaktorer för datalager tas fram. Vidare kategoriseras dessa utifrån ämnesområden och kopplas sedan till de olika spåren för datalagrets livscykel. Därefter görs en undersökning hur pass betydelsefulla de olika framgångsfaktorerna anses vara. Avslutningsvis presenteras en rangordning av de olika framgångsfaktorerna för de olika spåren. Att kategorisera och rangordna framgångsfaktorer bidrar till att verksamheter lättare kan studera vilka framgångsfaktorer som är betydelsefulla och var de hör hemma.

    Resultatet visar dels på att hänsyn måste tas till flera olika framgångsfaktorer i de olika spåren samt att det finns interaktion mellan framgångsfaktorerna.

    Inkorporering av extern data i datalager är problematiskt och problematiken bekräftas av aktuella undersökningar inom området. Detta har medfört att det utvecklats olika former av stöd för att bemöta och analysera problemen som organisationer ställs inför.

    För organisationer är det i högsta grad viktigt att dess beslutsfattare är välinformerade och klarar av att selektera information från stora mängder data. Det är i dessa sammanhang som en datalagerlösning är en viktig hörnsten för att stödja analys och presentation av data som ursprungligen är lagrad i olika datakällor (både interna och externa). Genom att inkorporera extern data i datalagret uppnår datalagret en betydligt högre potential och således kan även organisationer och framförallt dess beslutsfattare utvinna stora fördelar.

    Strand (2005) har tagit fram riktlinjer för att stödja inkorporeringsprocessen av extern data i datalager. Dock saknas en utvärdering av riktlinjerna. En utvärdering bidrar till att riktlinjernas trovärdighet stärks och att riktlinjerna på ett tidigt stadie förs in i en förvaltningsprocess.

The experiences from the first two years in use are: enhanced communication, mutual understanding of academic and business values, and opportunity to the doctoral students to build a research identity associated to their own project.

    Industrial doctoral projects are one possible way to promote knowledge transfer between universities and commercial organizations. These projects are anchored and initiated in problems identified by business organizations, further discussed and refined by researchers from related research areas and last approximately four-five years. Although, there are a number of benefits of such interdisciplinary projects, there are also associated challenges. The challenges often relate to differences in cultures, interests and goals of the involved parties. The hypothesis behind our study is that systematic communication on business values and academic requirements within the specific doctoral projects considerably increases the probability of success of the projects by producing academic and industrial values as well as saves time.

     

    This paper presents the Thesis Steering Model (TSM), an instrument developed to support systematic communication and collaboration for the different stakeholders involved in industrial doctoral projects. The development of TSM is based on project management tools used by organizations, and on national requirements for postgraduate education. TSM emphasizes the early stages of a project. The paper includes basic motivations and issues in developing the TSM, as well as its use in the view of academic literature in the subject. The results illustrate the use of TSM for seven doctoral projects within a postgraduate school in applied informatics. The experiences from the first two years in use are that benefits occur in terms of enhanced communication, mutual understanding and building long-term relations between industry and academy and giving more opportunity to the doctoral students to build a research identity associated to their own project. Additionally, we discuss the need and role of structured communication for resource handling and necessary intercultural collaboration activities needed during industrial doctoral projects.

    In today's interconnected world, we as users constantly demand more information to be accessible from the web. Not only should the data be accessible but a crucial factor is that load times should be fast. With the internet expanding to more devices of different types such as smartphones, tablets, IoT devices and more, this factor becomes even more important. The most commonly used service today for serving data between clients and a server is REST, which has been the leading service used for this purpose for many years. This research paper focuses on identifying the differences in performance between RESTful services and Facebook's GraphQL. These two technologies are the two most commonly used and talked about solutions when it comes to serving data between clients and servers as of today, with more developers moving towards the newer GraphQL.

    Abstract [en]

    Admission controllers in dynamic real-time systems perform traditional schedulability tests in order to determine whether incoming tasks will meet their deadlines. These tests are computationally expensive and typically run in n * log n time where n is the number of tasks in the system. An incoming task might therefore miss its deadline while the schedulability test is being performed, when there is a heavy load on the system. In our work we evaluate a new approach for admission control in firm real-time systems. Our work shows that ANNs can be used to perform a schedulability test in order to work as an admission controller in firm real-time systems. By integrating the ANN admission controller to a real-time simulator we show that our approach provides feasible performance compared to a traditional approach. The ANNs are able to make up to 86% correct admission decisions in our simulations and the computational cost of our ANN schedulability test has a constant value independent of the load of the system. Our results also show that the computational cost of a traditional approach increases as a function of n log n where n is the number of tasks in the system.

    The international maritime industry is growing fast due to an increasing number of transportations over sea. In pace with this development, the maritime surveillance capacity must be expanded as well, in order to be able to handle the increasing numbers of hazardous cargo transports, attacks, piracy etc. In order to detect such events, anomaly detection methods and techniques can be used. Moreover, since surveillance systems process huge amounts of sensor data, anomaly detection techniques can be used to filter out or highlight interesting objects or situations to an operator. Making decisions upon large amounts of sensor data can be a challenging and demanding activity for the operator, not only due to the quantity of the data, but factors such as time pressure, high stress and uncertain information further aggravate the task. Bayesian networks can be used in order to detect anomalies in data and have, in contrast to many other opaque machine learning techniques, some important advantages. One of these advantages is the fact that it is possible for a user to understand and interpret the model, due to its graphical nature.

    This thesis aims to investigate how the output from a Bayesian network can be explained to a user by first reviewing and presenting which methods exist and second, by making experiments. The experiments aim to investigate if two explanation methods can be used in order to give an explanation to the inferences made by a Bayesian network in order to support the operator’s situation awareness and decision making process when deployed in an anomaly detection problem in the maritime domain.

    Abstract [en]

    More and more complex semi-automated systems are being developed, aiding human operators to collect and analyze data and information and even to recommend decisions and act upon these. The goal of such development is often to support the operators make better decisions faster, while at the same time decrease their workload. However, these promises are not always fulfilled and several incidents have highlighted the fact that the introduction of automated technologies might instead increase the need for human involvement andexpertise in the tasks carried out.

    The significance of communicating information regarding an automated system's performance and to explain its strengths and limitations to its operators is strongly highlighted within the system transparencyand operator-centered automation literature. However, it is not common that feedback containing system qualifiers is incorporated into the primary displays of the automated system, obscuring its transparency. In this thesis, we deal with the investigation of the effects of explaining and visualizing system reasoning and performance parameters in different domains on the operators' trust, workload and performance. Different proof-of-concept prototypes have been designed with transparency characteristics in mind, and quantitative and qualitative evaluations together with operators of these systems have been carried out.

    Our results show that the effects of automation transparency can positively influence the performance and trust calibration of operators of complex systems, yet possibly at the costs of higher workload and longer decision-making times. Further, this thesis provides recommendations for designers and developers of automated systems in terms of general design concepts and guidelines for developing transparent automated systems for the future.

    We present an empirical study where the effects of three levels of system transparency of an automated target classification aid on fighter pilots’ performance and initial trust in the system were evaluated. The levels of transparency consisted of (1) only presenting text–based information regarding the specific object (without any automated support), (2) accompanying the text-based information with an automatically generated object class suggestion and (3) adding the incorporated sensor values with associated (uncertain) historic values in graphical form. The results show that the pilots needed more time to make a classification decision when being provided with display condition 2 and 3 than display condition 1. However, the number of correct classifications and the operators’ trust ratings were the highest when using display condition 3. No difference in the pilots’ decision confidence was found, yet slightly higher workload was reported when using display condition 3. The questionnaire results report on the pilots’ general opinion that an automatic classification aid would help them make better and more confident decisions faster, having trained with the system for a longer period.
