Spelgrafikens former och färger: hur valet av former och färger påverkat grafiken i spelet Fret Nice2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Deferred Rendering: Jämförelse mellan traditionell deferred rendering och light pre-pass rendering1987Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

We live in a society where there is a lot of stress. Children experience on increasing level of stress that can be related to decreasing physical activity and to the fact that they spend more and more of their free time playing computer games or watching the television. This creates a bad habit among the young children, who rather sit down than move around. I assume it is important that the pre-school create such a habit for the children that they want to get outdoors and that outdoor play it is fun and exciting. The purpose of this study is to emphasize the pre-school teachers’ professional role for their pedagogical work in the pre-school playground. The three research questions answered are: (1) How do pre-school teachers’ reason about the educational work regarding children’s outdoor play in the pre-school playground? (2) How are pre-school teachers involved in the design of the pre-school playground in relation to the educational work with the children? And (3) what do they express related to their own participation in the design of the outdoor pre-school playground? The study sets out from the following concepts, children’s play, pre-school playground, outdoor activity and pedagogical work. The study is qualitative and based on interviews with pre-school teachers. The result showed that the pre-school playgrounds in this study, meet the children´s "natural" needs, where they can use their bodies in a natural way as, by running, jumping, playing and to cooperate, both in self-determined or controlled activities. Pre-school teachers’ interest in the outdoor environment design has contributed a great deal to children’s play and development. The study contributes to an insight into what the outdoor environment is about and how its design affects children's outdoor play and development.

Styrbeteenden för autonoma agenter i trafikmiljö2007Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

STUDIE AV LJUS SOM NARRATIV I EN LABYRINT2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 180 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

A current theory of learning is the socio-cultural theory, which emphasizes the importance of social interaction and communication in children’s learning. This is highlighted from pedagogical researchers and also the national curriculum. The following study has dealt with the teaching in mathematics and emphasises the use of communication as a learning tool. Theories which claim that knowledge is something which can be easily transferred to students or constructed mainly through individual activity, constructivism, is today of minor interest. Therefore it is interesting to find out in which degree these theories are reflected in the mathematics education of today. The aim of this study is to identify different theories of learning which can be recognized from four teachers’ statements of their own teaching in mathematics. Our point of departure was the different theories view of communication as a learning tool. The empirical data collection has been performed by four interviews. The result is pointing out that the four teachers’ classroom work reflects all three of the fundamental learning theories, which has been the base of the study. Although there is a difference between the teachers, in what degree these theories “appear” in their lessons and how they consciously use communication as a learning tool. It is not clear that the most current learning theory always is preferable. A main conclusion is also that a classroom which is characterised of communication and dialogues does not occur by itself. An attitude that assumes that everyone can contribute to each other’s learning is required and that the students get opportunities to practise their communication skills is of great importance.

Trasdocksanimering: En teknik för dynamisk animation i datorspel2007Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Integrating Prior Knowledge into the Fitness Function of an Evolutionary Algorithm for Deriving Gene Regulatory Networks2006Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The topic of gene regulation is a major research area in the bioinformatics community. In this thesis prior knowledge from Gene Ontology in the form of templates is integrated into the fitness function of an evolutionary algorithm to predict gene regulatory networks. The resulting multi-objective fitness functions are then tested with MAPK network data taken from KEGG to evaluate their respective performances. The results are presented and analyzed. However, a clear tendency cannot be observed. The results are nevertheless promising and can provide motivation for further research in that direction. Therefore different ideas and approaches are suggested for future work.

Threat Analysis Using Goal-Oriented Action Planning: Planning in the Light of Information Fusion2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

An entity capable of assessing its and others action capabilities possess the power to predict how the involved entities may change their world. Through this knowledge and higher level of situation awareness, the assessing entity may choose the actions that have the most suitable effect, resulting in that entity’s desired world state.

This thesis covers aspects and concepts of an arbitrary planning system and presents a threat analyzer architecture built on the novel planning system Goal-Oriented Action Planning (GOAP). This planning system has been suggested for an application for improved missile route planning and targeting, as well as being applied in contemporary computer games such as F.E.A.R. – First Encounter Assault Recon and S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl. The GOAP architecture realized in this project is utilized by two agents that perform action planning to reach their desired world states. One of the agents employs a modified GOAP planner used as a threat analyzer in order to determine what threat level the adversary agent constitutes. This project does also introduce a conceptual schema of a general planning system that considers orders, doctrine and style; as well as a schema depicting an agent system using a blackboard in conjunction with the OODA-loop.

Hållbar utveckling i ämnet biologi: En kvalitativ studie om hur grundskolelärare i årskurs 4-6 arbetar med hållbar utveckling.2013Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study is based on teacher’s interpretation of sustainable development in biology. The aim is to examine the grounds on which teachers choose methods and subject content. The teachers who were interviewed operate in grades 4-6. The interviews are semi-structured, which means that the themes were ordinated on a given interview guide, the questions are not posed by any predetermined order. The teachers who are included in the study are competent in biology, and the selection process is based on a convenience sample. The teachers got as advance information the purpose of the study. The results of the study show three different types of teachers with different approaches to sustainable development. The three approaches are: Sustainable development in everyday life, sustainable development from a global perspective as well as attitudes and values of sustainable development. Another category was added after further work with the results and that is the common part, it appears that discussion, awareness and the current debate on sustainable development are key components. The discussion highlights including how sustainable development involves the community and the teachers in the study adopts an educational approach to the area. The discussion also reveals the abilities that are important in the process of sustainable development. The study shows that the teachers provide and enable knowledge as a tool for students to have necessary skills to function in society for sustainable development. It is knowledge of pupils' individual ability to function in society in our common reference framework. Students practice and develop their ability to understand the consequences of different choices and lifestyles.

Från modell till modell: Transformering av information från ett modellspråk till ett annat2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

We are two teacher students that have found it to be very interesting to study children inthe ages between one and three and their language development in preschool. We havechosen two put our focus on the gathering as a forum for linguistic development.During our trainee work of our education we have seen that preschool teachers look atthe gathering in different ways, and that they don´t always see it as a pedagogical tool tohelp children in with their linguistic development. When the amount of childrenincreases in the ward it can be difficult teach child the attention needed to stimulate thechild`s language development, we want to draw attention to the gathering. We chose toobserve three pre-school teachers and conduct interviews with these three, we selectedthree trained preschool teachers with varying lengths of work experience. We wanted tosee how they acted in the gatherings and find out what they did to promote children'slanguage development in the gathering. What we saw during our observations was thatthere were both singing and playing, but the pre-school teachers did not see thecollection as a tool but more as a way to entertain and inform children. We have studiedwhat is written about the gathering as an educational tool for children's languagedevelopment and found that it can advantageously utilize the gathering by playing wordgames, reading, and let the children talk to their friends in a way that the pre-schoolteacher would. Here they have the opportunity to step in and control what they wanttheir children to take part and practice but do so in a way that is fun for the kids. Wehave discussed and compared our results with what previously researchers andphilosophers have written. We want to encourage this study to see the collection as atool that has great potential in today's pre-school work, and that it is important not toforget the very youngest children just by having gathering that focus on the olderchildren, but working with collections of all ages.

Un estudio sobre el lenguaje juvenil entre estudiantes españoles de intercambio2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [es]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to take part of and analyze teachers´ experiences of cooperation with legal guardians concerning the support to students in their process of doing homework. We aimed to identify factors of importance for cooperation between schools and homes and look into teachers´ visions to develop this. The study is based on qualitative interviews with six active primary teachers. We have utilized a socio-cultural and social-ecological perspective in our interpretation on the empirical material. The result shows that the teachers believe that there is a significant importance to have this cooperation between schools and home regarding homework. Homework is presented as a mediating tool for cooperation where the students´ surrounding world, school and home are brought together. Homework as a mediating tool is a tool colored by our culture and is used for communication. Important factors for the cooperation between schools and homes are

clearness and approach, which means providing information, giving homework on time, having open communications and transparency.

Att lära ut spelet till spelaren: Skapandet av en ny inledning till spelet Sway2010Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Dentistry "in the wild": A workplace study of dentistry from a Distributed cognition perspective2011Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 30 credits / 45 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The research problem addressed in this thesis is the lack of understanding of dentistry in practice, and the limited amount of work from a HCI-perspective in dental informatics. The aim of this thesis is to gain a deeper understanding of the area as a socio-technical domain from a Distributed cognition-perspective using workplace studies. Dentistry is a complex socio-technical domain where humans, technology, tools and artifacts together form a system. The ubiquitous presence of computers has made a mark on the dental profession with e.g. record systems and digital x-ray, and the integration of IT-system in the dental field may inform how dentists make decisions for their patients and how they perform their work. The problem is that not much work has been done in the dental informatics field from a HCI-perspective. This thesis applies workplace studies and Distributed cognition as an approach to HCI to gain an understanding of dentistry in practice and also draw conclusions how Distributed cognition could be applied as a method in HCI. This thesis presents a detailed account of work in dentistry regarding the propagation of information through representational stages and the roles, tasks and artifacts that are present in the complex socio-technical domain of dentistry. The thesis also provide implications for Distributed cognition regarding how it could be developed to fit into today’s complex socio-technical domains both as a method in HCI and as a theoretical framework.

Key words: Dental informatics, Human-computer interaction, Distributed cognition, Workplace studies.

Using a Chatbot to Prevent Identity Fraud By Social Engineering2009Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Social engineering is a threat that is expanding and threatens organisations existence. A social engineer can get hold of crucial business information that is vital for the organisation and by this threaten the organisation. To prevent successful fraud attempts the organisations need to educate their employees about social engineering fraud techniques that can be used for gaining information. Hence, information security education needs new educational approaches to cope with the threats.

A solution to the problem is the use of an automated chatbot that gives the employees knowledge about a threat that is difficult to spot. To understand if an automated chatbot is a possible solution to educate the users, an investigation about the applicability is conducted. The investigation is based on a survey that compares traditional security education that is based on reading a written informational text and the use of an automated chatbot that simulates a fraud attempt with the purpose to steal an identity. The education with the automated chatbot is to be exposed to an identity fraud attempt in a controlled environment and then get an explanation of what have happened and way.

The automated chatbot is developed with a fraud attempt that looks like a normal market research approach, the market research where conducted with question that gather information that is important for identity thefts.

The result of the investigation shows that it may be possible to use an automated chatbot for educating in social engineering fraud attacks. However there is still a need to solve several major problems before there are possible to make sure the concept is fully feasible.

According to the curriculum (Lgr11) and Education Act (SFS 2010:800) is the teacher's assignment to individualize their education. These policy documents are clearer about the individualized education than previous policy documents have been. My experience was that this wasn´t done fully as it should. With this as background, I wanted to investigate teachers' understanding of individualized education. This made my purpose to examine and study the teachers' different conceptions of individualized education. This, I chose to do through a qualitative approach to interview data collection techniques. The study was based on phenomenography. The study has four active teachers interviewed. The results showed two different conceptions of individualized education: Individually tailored teaching as a general principles of teaching and individualized education as a utopia. What became clear in the results is that the category Individually tailored teaching as a general principle of teaching is the category most frequently occurring in the empirical material. The teachers expressed that they use a lot of individualized education as a general principle of teaching. Before the study, I assumed that teachers in the greater would see the personalized education as a utopia, as something they wanted to work with, but felt they had time, resources or opportunities. When analyzing the relationship between the different positions, was it clear that the category Individually tailored teaching as a general principle of teaching can be seen in a student perspective as more developed than the category Individually tailored teaching as a utopia.

Instructors who have to deal with sharing her knowledge of the industry so that students are enabled to perform the craft. They also have an educational role to teach and instruct in the craft. Program goals emphasize aspects is the ability to carry out the profession. How to deal with professional teachers of their dual roles, they feel that they have dual roles? Purpose of this study is to examine what skills trainers in the hotel - and restaurant program is experiencing significant to become a professional instructors. This is an interview where I chose to interview three instructors in the hotel - and restaurant program. The results indicate that as instructors is to have expertise in two professions, and industry expertise, and teaching vocational skills. The first three aspects of teacher stress has been linked to the industry, and about the importance of basic skills and work experience, to be stress problem solver as well as curiosity and interest in own professional development. The other two are more related to the educational challenge and about being flexible and well-prepared and the importance of good student and parental contact. At the same time be noted that these competencies also overlap, according to the analysis of their evidence. They do not feel that they have dual roles, they feel that there is a role to be instructors of dual and wide areas of expertise.

An Architecture for Demonstrating the Interplay of Emerging SISO standards2006In: Fall Simulation Interoperability Workshop (FallSIW): 10-15 September 2006, Orlando, 2006, p. 441-451Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The Simulation Interoperability Standards Organization (SISO) focuses on facilitating simulation interoperability across government and non-government applications worldwide. A number of standards are emerging that will individually have great impact on the development and operation of simulation systems, as well as interoperation across simulation systems and command and control systems. More importantly, when these standards are applied together, they represent a set of capabilities and technologies which can revolutionize the simulation industry, radically improving the way we develop and deliver interoperable systems.

Each of the following standards addresses specific needs that have been shortcomings in M&S interoperability in the past: (1) the Coalition Battle Management Language (C-BML) provides a way to represent the coalition battle management doctrine within a Command and Control environment to enable unambiguous expression of plans and orders for live, constructive, and robotic forces; (2) the Military Scenario Definition Language (MSDL) provides a common way to describe a scenario, including initialization information, that can be shared across multiple systems; (3) the Base Object Model (BOM) standard provides a way to identify piece parts of a simulation or model that can be used as building blocks for composing larger model sets; (4) the Simulation Reference Markup Language (SRML) provides a platform-independent way to represent behavior models which can be rendered quickly and easily (at runtime) by a simulation; and (5) the Distributed Interactive Simulation Extensible Markup Language (DIS-XML) initiative provides a way to represent DIS Protocol Data Units using XML to enhance interchange of dynamic entity state and entity interactions across diverse systems.

This paper gives a brief overview of these key standardization efforts, and explores how each standard can interplay with other standards. The paper lays out an abstract architecture for demonstration of the composition of prototype versions of these products to show the community how they will be employed in the future and what benefits will accrue. The paper proposes a plan of action to implement the architecture for demonstration and discussion at the Spring 2007 Simulation Interoperability Workshop.

Taken together, however, the emerging standards represent a set of capabilities and technologies which can revolutionize the simulation industry, radically improving the way we develop and deliver interoperable systems.

In the Fall 2006 Simulation Interoperability Workshop, an architecture for demonstrating the interplay of several current and emerging SISO standards was presented. The following standards were selected for development of an initial demonstration system: (1) the Coalition Battle Management Language (C-BML) for unambiguous expression of plans and orders for live, constructive, and robotic forces; (2) the Military Scenario Definition Language (MSDL) for describing a scenarios that can be shared across multiple systems; (3) Base Object Models (BOMs) for specifying building blocks for composing larger model sets; (4) the Simulation Reference Markup Language (SRML) for platform-independent representation of executable behavior models; and (5) the Distributed Interactive Simulation Extensible Markup Language (DIS-XML) initiative for representing DIS Protocol Data Units in XML to enhance interchange of dynamic entity state and entity interactions across diverse systems in web-based network centric architectures.

This paper discusses how the framework can be used by the SISO community as a means for educating the community on emerging standards and as a platform for demonstration of new concepts and capabilities as a precursor to a new standardization effort. It describes work performed to design and develop an initial test case demonstrating the integration of these standards, including problems encountered, problem resolutions, lessons learned, and future work.

A Strategy for Ontology Research for the Coalition Battle Management Language (C-BML) Product Development Group2006In: Fall Simulation Interoperability Workshop (FallSIW): 10-15, September 2006, Orlando, FL, US, 2006, p. 11-22Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The Battle Management Language (BML) is defined as an unambiguous language for command and control of live, simulated, and robotic forces. BML has enjoyed a long history of analysis and prototype development since the mid-1990’s. From the Fall of 2004 through the Fall of 2005, the Simulation Interoperability Standards Organization (SISO) sponsored a Study Group to define the requirement for a Coalition BML (C-BML) to serve the needs of the US and international communities. In March 2006, the SISO Standards Advisory Council approved initiation of a Product Development Group (PDG) to generate a standard and guidance document for C-BML. The CBML PDG kicked off its activities at the Spring 2006 Simulation Interoperability Workshop in Huntsville, Alabama. The PDG has laid out a 3-phase development effort: (1) specify a sufficient data model to unambiguously define a set of military orders using the Command and Control Information Exchange Data Model (C2IEDM) as a starting point; (2) develop a formal grammar (lexicon and production rules) to formalize the definition of orders, requests, and reports; (3) develop a formal battle management ontology to enable conceptual interoperability across software systems. While a Drafting Group begins work on the Phase I standard and guidance documents, research teams in the PDG are continuing to explore and develop approaches that will meet the Phase II and Phase III product development objectives. With respect to development of a formal ontology for C-BML, there has been considerable discussion and disagreement regarding the value of pursuing this line of research. While it is generally accepted that encoding higher levels of semantic description into data models holds promise for greater capability in software to understand and work with the data, no explicit plan for how to do this in C-BML or what its value is for C-BML development, implementation, and employment has been clearly articulated. This paper seeks to clarify the discussion by describing a research plan and progress made to date toward defining the Phase III C-BML products dealing with development of a formal ontology for C-BML.

Implication of Culture: User Roles in Information Fusion for Enhanced Situational Understanding2009In: Information Fusion, 2009. FUSION '09. 12th International Conference on, IEEE conference proceedings, 2009, p. 1272-1279Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Information Fusion coordinates large-volume data processing machines to address user needs. Users expect a situational picture to extend their ability of sensing events, movements, and activities. Typically, data is collected and processed for object location (e.g. target identification) and movement (e.g. tracking); however, high-level reasoning or situational understanding depends on the spatial, cultural, and political effects. In this paper, we explore opportunities where information fusion can aid in the selection and processing of the data for enhanced tacit knowledge understanding by (1) display fusion for data presentation (e.g. cultural segmentation), (2) interactive fusion to allow the user to inject a priori knowledge (e..g. cultural values), and (3) associated metrics of predictive capabilities (e.g. cultural networks). In a simple scenario, cultural information impacts on situational understanding from deception is demonstrated using the Technology-Emotion-Culture-Knowledge (TECK) attributes of the Observer-Orient-Decide-Act (OODA) model.

    Abstract [en]

We are intrested in what role the children’s book has in preschool and if the teachers and the children had some thoughts on why reading matters. Because of this, we attempted to find out the teachers’ and the childrens’ opinions on reading in preschool and if, and how, they differ. We did a qualitative study and we interviewed six teachers and 18 children. Our study is based on the social cultural perspective. The teachers used the children’s book as a tool to further various facets of the childrens’ knowledge, for example language development, fantasy and factual knowledges. The children, on the other hand, thought that they read in preschool just for fun. Something that the teachers and the children agreed on was that it’s the teachers that choose the books at the organized reading times. But the children were allowed to choose books when they were the initiators of the reading during the free times.

Le Comportement stéréotype montré à la télévision en France et en Suède2007Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [fr]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Framgångsfaktorer för datalagerprojekt: en litteraturstudie2005Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Webbaserat behörighetssystem inom ramen för MedView-projektet2004Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Nyckelordssökning: Baserat på Vector Space Model2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
