    Internal Simulation of Perception: A Minimal Neuro-robotic Model2005In: Neurocomputing, ISSN 0925-2312, E-ISSN 1872-8286, Vol. 68, no 1-4, p. 85-104Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper explores the possibility of providing robots with an ‘inner world’ based on internal simulation of perception rather than an explicit representational world model. First a series of initial experiments is discussed, in which recurrent neural networks were evolved to control collision-free corridor following behavior in a simulated Khepera robot and predict the next time step's sensory input as accurately as possible. Attempts to let the robot act blindly, i.e. repeatedly using its own prediction instead of the real sensory input, were not particularly successful. This motivated the second series of experiments, on which this paper focuses. A feed-forward network was used which, as above, controlled behavior and predicted sensory input. However, weight evolution was now guided by the sole fitness criterion of successful, ‘blindfolded’ corridor following behavior, including timely turns, as above using as input only own sensory predictions rather than actual sensory input. The trained robot is in some cases actually able to move blindly in a simple environment for hundreds of time steps, successfully handling several multi-step turns. Somewhat surprisingly, however, it does so based on self-generated input that is not particularly similar to the actual sensory values.

On the Role of Emotion in Embodied Cognitive Architectures: From Organisms to Robots2009In: Cognitive Computation, ISSN 1866-9956, E-ISSN 1866-9964, Vol. 1, no 1, p. 104-117Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The computational modeling of emotion has been an area of growing interest in cognitive robotics research in recent years, but also a source of contention regarding how to conceive of emotion and how to model it. In this paper, emotion is characterized as (a) closely connected to embodied cognition, (b) grounded in homeostatic bodily regulation, and (c) a powerful organizational principle—affective modulation of behavioral and cognitive mechanisms—that is ‘useful’ in both biological brains and robotic cognitive architectures. We elaborate how emotion theories and models centered on core neurological structures in the mammalian brain, and inspired by embodied, dynamical, and enactive approaches in cognitive science, may impact on computational and robotic modeling. In light of the theoretical discussion, work in progress on the development of an embodied cognitive-affective architecture for robots is presented, incorporating aspects of the theories discussed.

Rethinking Level 5: Distributed Cognition and Information Fusion2006In: 9th International Conference on Information Fusion: IEEE ISIF, IEEE, 2006Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The focus of most information fusion research, so far, has been on the technology, i.e. information processing in machines. However, the importance of also understanding human information processing, and the interaction between humans and machines, is gaining increasing recognition. This position paper argues that a distributed cognition perspective, which considers cognitive processes not as taking place solely inside people's heads, but as distributed over human thought processes and the material, social and organizational environment they are embedded in, may help to provide a deeper understanding of information fusion processes

    Abstract [en]

Our purpose of this study is to investigate which perceptions six different teachers in primary schools have about subject integrated teaching that includes physical activity. To answer our purpose, we as authors performed a qualitative study where we carried out totally six interviews with six teachers from three different schools. Because the sample group is limited, we cannot draw any general conclusions.

In the results, it appears that all respondents believe that physical activity is important for children at school where the respondents connect movement with learning in different ways. They mentioned factors as increased motivation, improved concentration and greater opportunity for individualization for the students. It also appears that subject integrated teaching with motion occurs in the context of various subjects, but the teaching is usually not planned. The results also showed that subject integrated teaching between the subject Physical Education and other subjects are not planned in those three schools. The respondents are positive when it comes to movement in school as well as collaboration with the subject Physical Education. It turns out, however, that according to the respondents, there are various obstacles such as lack of time, running out of space and that it is not always possible to integrate movement with different subjects when children also need to work in peace, they need to work and concentrate in the classroom.

Information Security in Distributed Healthcare: Exploring the Needs for Achieving Patient Safety and Patient Privacy2008Doctoral thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

In healthcare, patient information is a critical factor. The right information at the right time is a necessity in order to provide the best possible care for a patient. Patient information must also be protected from unauthorized access in order to protect patient privacy. It is furthermore common for patients to visit more than one healthcare provider, which implies a need for cross border healthcare and continuity in the patient process.

This thesis is focused on information security in healthcare when patient information has to be managed and communicated between various healthcare actors and organizations. The work takes a practical approach with a set of investigations from different perspectives and with different professionals involved. Problems and needs have been identified, and a set of guidelines and recommendations has been suggested and developed in order to improve patient safety as well as patient privacy.

The results show that a comprehensive view of the entire area concerning patient information management between different healthcare actors is missing. Healthcare, as well as patient processes, have to be analyzed in order to gather knowledge needed for secure patient information management.

Furthermore, the results clearly show that there are deficiencies both at the technical and the administrative level of security in all investigated healthcare organizations.

The main contribution areas are: an increased understanding of information security by elaborating on the administrative part of information security, the identification of information security problems and needs in cross border healthcare, and a set of guidelines and recommendations in order to advance information security measures in healthcare.

    Abstract [en]

Healthcare institutions, like other organizations and governments, have progressed from manual to computerized information management during the past decades. However, Swedish healthcare is characterized by a slowness in implementing digitalization, especially electronic healthcare record (EHR). The implementation of IT in healthcare has been tardy for a number of reasons. The security problem, especially with regard to the management of patient information, is one such cause. This paper includes an experience report concerning the security level of different healthcare providers in the Swedish healthcare sector. A number of investigations have been conducted in the Western region of Sweden: The results demonstrate security variances in information security as well as common deficiencies both at the technical and administrative levels. The authentication technique and the users’ lack of security awareness and education are the main weaknesses.

    Abstract [en]

Healthcare manages a large amount of information. which represented in different forms is a necessity for the healthcare work. Furthermore, security is air obvious requirement for almost everything one does in healthcare. Information are available quicker and easier by means of modern information technology (IT) but IT also entails new demands on information security awareness. It is obvious, from different sources and earlier work in this area, that user behavior is one of the most important reasons for present shortcomings in information security. This paper reports on experiences from a case study at a hospital in southwestern Sweden. The aim with the work was to determine how users, using electronic medical records (EMR), are affected by the requirements of information security, how they affect the information security, and how they obey the recommendations and common advice for processing of personal data compiled by the Swedish Data Inspection Board. The result from this work shows that users are indeed affected by, and affect the requirements of information security. This is due to, above all, insufficient knowledge about information security, but also because security policies and routines in the organization (ire inadequate. Consequently, users are still a critical factor when information security measures are applied in healthcare.

This paper presents and illustrates the main features of a proposed process oriented approach for patient information distribution in future healthcare information systems by using a prototype of a process support system. The development of the prototype was based on Visuera method which includes five various steps. The results indicate that a visualised prototype is a suitable tool for illustrating both the opportunities and constraints of future ideas and solutions in eHealth. The main challenges for developing and implementing a fully functional process support system are both on a technical and organisational/management level.

    Abstract [en]

In the context of information systems and information technology, information security is a concept that is becoming widely used. The European Network of Excellence INTEROP classifies information security as a nonfunctional aspect of interoperability and as such it is an integral part of the design process for interoperable systems. In the last decade, academics and practitioners have shown their interest in information security, for example by developing security models for evaluating products and setting up security specifications in order to safeguard the confidentiality, integrity, availability and accountability of data. Earlier research has shown that measures to achieve information security in the administrative or organisational level are missing or inadequate. Therefore, there is a need to improve information security models by including vital elements of information security. In this paper, we introduce a holistic view of information security based on a Swedish model combined with a literature survey. Furthermore we suggest extending this model using concepts based on semiotic theory and adopting the view of an information system as constituted of the technical, formal and informal (TFI) parts. The aim is to increase the understanding of the information security domain in order to develop a well-founded theoretical framework, which can be used both in the analysis and the design phase of interoperable systems. Finally, we describe and apply the Information Security (InfoSec) model to the results of three different case studies in the healthcare domain. Limits of the model will be highlighted and an extension will be proposed.

Information Security Problems and Needs in a Distributed Healthcare Domain: A Case study2007In: The Twelfth International Symposium on Health Information Management Research (iSHIMR 2007), 2007, p. 97-108Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Accessibility to the right patient information at the right time is a necessity in order to provide the best possible care for a patient. This is a complex undertaking, in particular since healthcare more and more is characterized by diversity, distributed care givers, and extended use of IT. Patient information is sensitive, and must be handled correctly and safely in this setting. This paper takes a national perspective and investigates problems and needs concerning information security in a highly distributed healthcare domain. A small field study of five interviews was conducted to collect data. Results show that problems exist primarily in administrative security, but also that the balance between patient privacy and patient safety is difficult to maintain. Needed security measures are pointed out, and the need for a holistic view is highlighted.

Information Security Problems and Needs in Healthcare: A Case Study of Norway and Finland vs Sweden2008In: Enterprise Interoperability III: New Challenges and Industrial Approaches / [ed] Kai Mertins, Rainer Ruggaber, Keith Popplewell, Xiaofei Xu, Springer London, 2008, p. 41-53Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

In healthcare, the right information at the right time is a necessity in order to provide the best possible care for a patient. Patient information must also be protected from unauthorized access in order to protect patient privacy. It is also common for patients to visit more than one healthcare provider, which implies the need for crossborder healthcare and a focus on the patient process. Countries work differently with these issues. This paper is focused on three Scandinavian countries, Norway, Sweden and Finland, and their information security problems and needs in healthcare. Data was collected via case studies, and the results were compared to show both similarities and differences between these countries. Similarities include the too wide availability of patient information, an obvious need for risk analysis, and a tendency to focus more on patient safety than on patient privacy. Patients being involved in their own care, and the approach of exchanging patient information are examples of differences.

Patient Safety and Patient Privacy in Information Security from the Patient's view: A case study2010In: Journal of Information System Security, ISSN 1551-0123, E-ISSN 1551-0808, Vol. 6, no 4, p. 71-85Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The patient is the most important actor in healthcare and it is an obligation for healthcare to operate so that it fulfils the requirements of good care, i.e. provide patients with both patient safety and patient privacy. Furthermore, patients visit more than one healthcare provider, which implies the need for cross-border healthcare and a focus on the patient process. In order to manage sensitive patient information, IT solutions are required and the need of information security in healthcare is obvious. This paper presents the results from a case study in Swedish healthcare aiming to identify problems and needs concerning patient safety and patient privacy from a patient view. We also present how patient safety and patient privacy relate to the information security area, and emphasize the patient's view on these issues when the transfer of patient information between different healthcare providers becomes more common in the future. The results show that patients focus more on patient safety than on patient privacy, and that their role in their own process must be highlighted.

Arkadestetik i moderna dataspel: En stilstudie av klassisk shoot'em-up2007Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Complete vs Abridged: A Readability Study of Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This essay deals with the issue of readability, the term readability referring to what it is that makes a reader perceive a text as difficult or easy. Some factors are related to the reader but there are also those which depend on the text as such, one such factor being style which is the one that will be focused on in this essay.

The investigation is based on the analysis and comparison of a complete version and an abridged version of Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre, and the questions to be investigated are whether the author of the abridged version has succeeded in making it less complicated, and if he or she has done so by considering stylistic features said to be affecting readability.

Further, this essay is divided into four chapters. The first chapter contains the background for the analysis and is divided into 4 parts dealing with the following aspects: the definition of readability, early research on readability, later research on readability, and difficult and easy language. Chapter two describes the limitations made and the method used for the analysis which involves looking at the noun phrase, the verb phrase, and the clause. Chapter three gives a detailed description of the corpus investigated. Moving on to chapter four, this is where the results of the investigation are presented. This is done by dividing it into four different subchapters, each of them dealing with issues related to the different areas described in the method. Each of the subchapters then begins with the presentation of the results for each edition which is then followed by a comparative discussion. The essay ends with a conclusion part where conclusions regarding the four areas presented in the analysis are made along with the answering of research questions.

Estudio sobre el lenguaje juvenil en la obra Historias del Kronen, de José Ángel Mañas2007Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [es]

    Abstract:

    Abstract [es]

Att animera mänskliga Karaktärer: En studie kring animation med hjälp av icke verbal kommunikation2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

REALISTISKT SPELKARAKTÄRSBETEENDE VID ANVÄNDANDET AV HMD2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

The Left Hemisphere Interpreter and Confabulation: a Comparison2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The left hemisphere interpreter refers to a function in the left hemisphere of the brain that search for and produce causal explanations for events, behaviours and feelings, even though no such apparent pattern exists between them. Confabulation is said to occur when a person presents or acts on obviously false information, despite being aware that they are false. People who confabulate also tend to defend their confabulations even when they are presented with counterevidence. Research related to these two areas seems to deal with the same phenomenon, namely the human tendency to infer explanations for events, even if the explanations have no actual bearing in reality. Despite this, research on the left hemisphere interpreter has progressed relatively independently from research related to the concept of confabulation. This thesis has therefore aimed at reviewing each area and comparing them in a search for common relations. What has been found as a common theme is the emphasis they both place on the potentially underlying function of the interpreter and confabulation. Many researchers across the two fields stress the adaptive and vital function of keeping the brain free from both contradiction and unpredictability, and propose that this function is served by confabulations and the left hemisphere interpreter. This finding may provide a possible opening for collaboration across the fields, and for the continued understanding of these exciting and perplexing phenomena.

Improved Combat Tactics of AI Agents in Real-Time Strategy Games Using Qualitative Spatial Reasoning2005Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

Real-time strategy (RTS) games constitute one of the largest game genres today and have done so for the past decade. A central feature of real-time strategy games is opponent AI which is suggestively the “last frontier” of game development because the focus of research has primarily been on other components, graphics in particular. This has led to AI research being largely ignored within the commercial game industry but several methods have recently been suggested for improving the strategic ability of AI agents in real-time strategy games.

The aim of this project is to evaluate how a method called qualitative spatial reasoning can improve AI on a tactical level in a selected RTS game. An implementation of an AI agent that uses qualitative spatial reasoning has been obtained and an evaluation of its performance in an RTS game example monitored and analysed.

The study has shown that qualitative spatial reasoning affects AI agent’s behaviour significantly and indicates that it can be used to deduce a rule-base that increases the unpredictability and performance of the agent.

Diagnostiskt prov i matematik för årskurs 2: till vilken nytta?2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

The Reawakening2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Software Configuration Management: A comparison of Chef, CFEngine and Puppet2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Configuring services in an ad-hoc way is less than optimal as human error can result in services that fail. Even though scripting offers a solution it does not allow for a uniform deployment of configurations. A possible solution to this problem is the use of software configuration management systems (SCMS) that allow administrators to specify what should be done, and not necessarily how. An implementation is conducted that focuses on the first part of implementing an SCMS to see if a transition to a SCMS governed environment can be worthwhile. Three SCMS will be investigated; Chef, CFEngine and Puppet. The results show that administrators can receive good support from the documentation as documentation of the three SCMS are mostly accurate. The support from the community is affected by region and activity is declining in some cases. Overall it is easy to install an SCMS and special purpose languages are effective for specifying functionality of services.

AUDIO-NAVIGATION: What are the benefits of utilising diegetic spatial audio in audio-navigation software?2012Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The task of navigating and orienting oneself in an unknown environment might seem arbitrary to most people. For a person with a visual impairment however, it can prove to be a challenge. Much research has been conducted to provide useful software solutions to aid this problem. Nevertheless, not enough research has been put into studying the use of our everyday sounds for such software. The present thesis is aimed at evaluating the usefulness of utilising diegetic spatial audio. After a real environment was replicated in a virtual audio environment without visual input, 16 sound students from the University of Skövde were asked to perform the same set of tasks in the virtual and the real environment. The results indicated that diegetic spatial audio is an important part of navigating without vision and that the experiment would be interesting to perform on a larger scale with visually impaired participants.

Providing Adaptability in Survivable Systems through Situation Awareness2006Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 25 credits / 37,5 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

System integration, interoperability, just in time delivery, window of opportunity, and dust-to-dust optimization are all keywords of our computerized future. Survivability is an important concept that together with dependability and quality of service are key issues in the systems of the future, i.e. infrastructural systems, business applications, and everyday desktop applications. The importance of dependable systems and the widely spread usage of dependable system together with the complexity of those systems makes middleware and frameworks for survivability imperative to the system builder of the future. This thesis presents a simulation approach to investigate the effect on data survival when the defending system uses knowledge of the current situation to protect the data. The results show the importance of situation awareness to avoid wasting recourses. A number of characteristics of the situational information provided and how this information may be used to optimize the system.
