Konstruktion av gripverktyg för en kollaborativ robot2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This work is performed to use a collaborative robot in a mounting process with the aim of solving a type of hidden assembly, in which gear wheels should be synchronized. Because the parts are fragile and heavy, they become difficult for the assembler to handle, which can lead to damage to material or even worse the assembler. A gripping tool should therefore be designed to be used with a collaborative robot in this type of assembly. A comparison of collaborative robots is performed, based on two necessary requirements, where the robot's lifting capacity must be at least 10 kg and that the robots meet safety standards in a safety manner. Where the cobot KUKA LBR IIWA 14 meets these requirements and is considered to be most appropriate for carrying out the task. The robot has a lifting capacity of 14 kg, which means it can handle the gripping tool and the gearbox housing mass, the robot is also considered to be very easy to program. LBR iiwa is a very versatile robot and has no major deficits and therefore the choice of robot is considered to be well completed. A gripping tool has been designed and gone through different stages of development, from concept-generating ideas to design and choosing materials and making FEM analyses. Results suggest that selection of designs and materials on the gripping tool makes it approved for manufacturing and will handle the various loads the gripping tool will be exposed to in carrying out the task.

Worries and possibilities in active citizenship: Three Swedish educational contexts2012In: Education, Citizenship and Social Justice, ISSN 1746-1979, E-ISSN 1746-1987, Vol. 7, no 3, p. 255-270Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article examines how the concept of active citizenship has been given a neo-liberal character by examining practice in three different educational contexts in Sweden. The concept of active citizenship has become influential in educational policy and practice throughout the European Union. The aim of this article is to highlight concerns at how this concept has come to be re-shaped by neo-liberal principles in Swedish education. The analysis highlights three themes, based on voice, ethical awareness and complexity and mutuality of lived experience, and argues that they provide the basis for a shift away from the present neo-liberal colouring of the concept.

Kvinnors upplevelser efter en gastric bypass operation: Är gräset alltid grönare på andra sidan?2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Background: The worldwide prevalence of obesity has doubled in the last twenty years and is therefore classified as a global epidemic and is therefore a major health problem. This has initiated the gastric bypass surgery to increase. It is therefore important that nurses and people considering this operation have a better understanding and knowledge the life after the surgery. Objective: The aim of this study was to describe women's experiences after a gastric bypass surgery. Method: This study used qualitative method to study the blogs written by women who have gone through gastric bypass surgery. It contains 14 analysed blogs. Results/ Discussion: The result shows that women have a better quality of life when it´s easier for them to move around and don’t feel the discomfort when they are participating in social activities. However, there is a downside to the surgery. They find it difficult to adjust to the new lifestyle, in order to avoid the complications. Some of these women are also experiencing identity crisis. Conclusion: It is therefore significant for patients who have gone through gastric bypass surgery to get the support they need with attitudes and information about diet to have a healthy and permanent weight loss and lifestyle. Further research on how women experience the psychological health before and after the surgery needs to be done since obesity is increasing and more people are choosing this method for weight loss.

Artificiella växtbaserade ekosystem i dataspel för lärande: Realism & effektivitet2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Decision-making in the Requirements Engineering Process: A Human-centred Approach2005Licentiate thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Complex decision-making is a prominent aspect of requirements engineering and the need for improved decision support for requirements engineers has been identified by a number of authors. A first step toward better decision support in requirements engineering is to understand decision-makers’ complex decision situations. To gain a holistic perspective of the decision situation from a decision-makers perspective, a decision situation framework has been created. The framework evolved through a literature analysis of decision support systems and decision-making theories. The decision situation of requirements engineers has been studied at Ericsson Microwave Systems and is described in this thesis. Aspects of decision situations are decision matters, decision-making activities, and decision processes. Another aspect of decision situations is the factors that affect the decision-maker. A number of interrelated factors have been identified. Each factor consists of problems and these are related to decision-making theories. The consequences of this for requirements engineering decision support, represented as a list that consists of desirable high-level characteristics, are also discussed.

User Experience of Conveying Emotions by Touch2017In: Proceedings of the 26th IEEE International Symposium on Robot and Human Interactive Communication (RO-MAN), IEEE, 2017, p. 1240-1247Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In the present study, 64 users were asked to convey eight distinct emotion to a humanoid Nao robot via touch, and were then asked to evaluate their experiences of performing that task. Large differences between emotions were revealed. Users perceived conveying of positive/pro-social emotions as significantly easier than negative emotions, with love and disgust as the two extremes. When asked whether they would act differently towards a human, compared to the robot, the users’ replies varied. A content analysis of interviews revealed a generally positive user experience (UX) while interacting with the robot, but users also found the task challenging in several ways. Three major themes with impact on the UX emerged; responsiveness, robustness, and trickiness. The results are discussed in relation to a study of human-human affective tactile interaction, with implications for human-robot interaction (HRI) and design of social and affective robotics in particular.

Conveying Emotions by Touch to the Nao Robot: A User Experience Perspective2018In: Multimodal Technologies and Interaction, ISSN 2414-4088, Vol. 2, no 4, article id 82Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Social robots are expected gradually to be used by more and more people in a widerrange of settings, domestic as well as professional. As a consequence, the features and qualityrequirements on human–robot interaction will increase, comprising possibilities to communicateemotions, establishing a positive user experience, e.g., using touch. In this paper, the focus is ondepicting how humans, as the users of robots, experience tactile emotional communication with theNao Robot, as well as identifying aspects affecting the experience and touch behavior. A qualitativeinvestigation was conducted as part of a larger experiment. The major findings consist of 15 differentaspects that vary along one or more dimensions and how those influence the four dimensions ofuser experience that are present in the study, as well as the different parts of touch behavior ofconveying emotions.

User Experience of Socially Interactive Robots: Its Role and Relevance2015In: Handbook of Research on Synthesizing Human Emotion in Intelligent Systems and Robotics / [ed] Jordi Vallverdú, Hershey, Pennsylvania, USA: IGI Global, 2015, p. 352-364Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Socially interactive robots are expected to have an increasing importance in everyday life for a growing number of people, but negative user experience (UX) can entail reluctance to use robots. Positive user experience underpins proliferation of socially interactive robots. Therefore, it is essential for robot developers to put serious efforts to attain social robots that the users experience as positive. In current human-robot interaction (HRI) research, user experience is reckoned to be important and is used as an argument for stating that something is positive. However, the notion of user experience is noticeably often taken for granted and is neither described nor problematized. By recognizing the complexity of user experience the intended contributions can be even more valuable. Another trend in HRI research is to focus on user experience evaluation and examination of user experience. The current research paths of user experience of socially interactive robots are not enough. This chapter suggests that additional research directions are needed in order accomplish long-term, wide-spread success of socially interactive robots.

    Abstract [en]

Socially interactive robots are expected to have an increasing importance in human society. For social robots to provide long-term added value to people’s lives, it is of major importance to stressthe need for positive user experience (UX) of such robots. The human-centered view emphasizes various aspects that emerge in the interaction between humans and robots. However, a positive UX does not appear by itself but has to be designed for and evaluated systematically. In this paper, the focus is on the role and relevance of UX in human-robot interaction (HRI) and four trends concerning the role and relevance of UX related to socially interactive robots are identified, and three challenges related to its evaluation are also presented. It is argued that current research efforts and directions are not sufficient in HRI research, and that future research needs to further address interdisciplinary research in order to achieve long-term success of socially interactive robots.

Designing Simulation-Based Training for Prehospital Emergency Care: Participation from a Participants Perspective2015In: Human-Computer Interaction: Designing and Evaluation: 17th International Conference, HCI International 2015, Los Angeles, CA, USA, August 2-7, 2015, Proceedings, Part I / [ed] Masaaki Kurosu, Springer Berlin/Heidelberg, 2015, Vol. 9169, p. 297-306Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Simulation-based training for prehospital emergency care is characterized by high degrees of complexity. Thorough knowledge of both the work and the setting is crucial and it is therefore important to involve both end-users and other stakeholders during the whole design process. This paper investigates a design process by focusing on how project participants experience the work process and participation of a multi-disciplinary, research-practitioner design team. This case study focuses on the work within a development project of a new prehospital emergency training facility. Open-ended interviews were conducted with the project participants halfway through the project. Strikingly, the results show that while there are problems and tensions that potentially could overturn the project, all participants express strong satisfaction with their participation in the project. This implies that the accumulated positive experiences are so strong that they overshadow tensions and problems that under other circumstances could have caused a project breakdown.

    Abstract [en]

Complex decision-making is a prominent aspect of requirements engineering (RE) and the need for improved decision support for RE decision-makers has been identified by a number of authors in the research literature. Decision-supporting features and qualities can be integrated in RE tools. Thus, there is a need to evaluate the decision-supporting capabilities of RE tools. In this paper, we introduce a summative, criteria-based evaluation method termed DESCRY, which purpose is to investigate to what extent RE tools have decision-supporting capabilities. The criteria and their related questions are empirically as well as theoretically grounded.

Complex decision-making is a prominent aspect of requirements engineering (RE) and the need for improved decision support for RE decision-makers has been identified by a number of authors in the research literature. A first step toward better decision support in requirements engineering is to understand multifaceted decision situations of decision-makers. In this paper, the focus is on RE decision-making in large scale bespoke development. The decision situation of RE decision-makers on a subsystem level has been studied at a systems engineering company and is depicted in this paper. These situations are described in terms of, e.g., RE decision matters, RE decision-making activities, and RE decision processes. Factors that affect RE decision-makers are also identified.

    Abstract [sv]

Generisk Affärsmodell för E-tjänster2009Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

    Abstract [en]

This study aimed to describe children’s experience of living with overweight or obesity, by using a literature-review. The study includes eleven articles, data is from children between ages 5-15 year. The result occurring were in the areas; Quality of life and self-esteem, Social company, Body concept and weight reduction and Psychological unhealth. BMI above what is recommended gives a negative influence on quality of live and self-esteem. The exposure of teasing is rising, which also dieting and weight–related concerns do. Depression symptoms occur in varying degree, but the correlation to BMI is not direct. Girls in ages up to 14 years seem to be most influenced by being overweight or obese. The language children are using related to their own body may act as a barrier to apply its health- consequences on themselves. Health- care professionals should treat those children in a way that reinforce their view of themselves, by doing so they can help them reaching better health. To improve treat and treatment of the children, there is a need of more qualitative investigation in the subject.

    Abstract [en]

During our previous study entitled ”Development or complication? An interactive study of a developing project in a upper secondary school.” (Alexandersson & Carlén, 2007) we noticed the complexity of developing projects. Along with the teachers and school management we decided to follow up their developing project in this study of deeper character. The purpose of the study was to understand what happens in a team work practice related to a developing project focusing on critical aspects that can appear in such a process

Our empirical approach was hermeneutic and our method was action research. We used reflexive interviews which are open and offer flexibility during the interviews. Interpreting and reflection characterized our analysis work

The result indicates several different aspects that effects developing project and we have identified three critical aspects which we find particularly important to take into consideration in developing project.

    • That the organisation prevents the pedagogical attitude.
    • That management by objectives requires transformed leadership.
    • That co-operation and developing project contributes teachers’ critical reflection and power of their domain.

We establish that a common understanding of the mission throughout the school organisation is necessary in order to implement restructuring that renew teaching format require. Another condition for renewed teaching format is to relinquish tasks to make place for new ones.

Att förebygga och behandla malnutrition i sjukvården: En litteraturstudie2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Malnutrition is a well known problem in the patient related care in Europe as well as in the rest of the world. Despite this is malnutrition something that still exists. What can that depend on? It is important to judge the patients nutrition status as a routine to be able to prevent malnutrition. The effects of malnutrition cost the community a lot of money and human suffering. The aim of this study was to see the nurse’s responsibility when it comes to prevent and treat malnutrition in his/her daily work. Our choice of method to answer this aim was a literature review. With regard to scientific quality we elected to review ten articles. The results of this study are showing that judging, preventing measures, documentation and interaction between the nurse and patient are important in the work of preventing and treating of malnutrition. The conclusion is that it’s necessary for the nurses to have more education in malnutrition to be able to identify risk patients. The interaction between the nurse and patient is also very important and has to work correctly

    Abstract [en]

Background: Telephone advice nursing is a big part of the assignment as a district nurse in primary care. The district nurse must have the ability to assess the urgency and health care need of the patients matter as well as provide information and self-care advice by telephone. As immigration is increasing in Sweden the calls to primary care from people with different ethnical background are most likely to increase along with it. Difficulties in communication and lack of visual contact might lead to misunderstanding and miscalculation regarding the patients matter. It is important that the district nurse can extract relevant information about the patient in order to assess the health care need.       Aim: The aim of the study was to illuminate the district nurses' experiences of telephone advice nursing in primary care regarding calls with people of different ethnic background. Method: A qualitative content analysis with an inductive approach was used in the study. The data was collected through interviews with seven district nurses. Results: The analysis revealed four themes; A threat to patient safety, Different points of view that collides, A challenge that require resources, Shifting emotions in telephone advice nursing.                                                                                                                                                     Conclusion: This study made it visible that there are difficulties in telephone advice nursing regarding calls with people who have different ethnic background, which could be a threat to patient safety. The result can provide increased awareness to this problem, and that telephone advice nursing to this group of people needs to be improved and adjusted.

Sjuksköterskans IT-kompetens2005Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Webbaserad redigering på icke-kommersiella organisationers webbplatser2004Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Outsourcing: Uppmärksamma risker med outsourcing på småföretag2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

System Characteristics and Contextual Constraints for Future Fighter Decision Support2016In: International Journal of Information System Modeling and Design, ISSN 1947-8186, E-ISSN 1947-8194, Vol. 7, no 1, p. 1-17Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Research on decision support systems for fighter aircraft has to regard future manned and unmanned cooperating aircraft. This paper highlights system characteristics and contextual constraints to guide research as well as system development. Long term trends have been identified for the domain that has to be coped with, including the transformation of the fighter pilot from pilot to tactical decision maker. Automation strategies have to be developed to support manned and unmanned aircraft in a joint cognitive system. For instance, for intelligent fighter pilot support, for distributed unmanned and manned decision making, function allocation has to be concerned. For function allocation it is important not only to regard which agent is best at performing a task but also to regard the risk/cost of performing a task in this kind of potentially hazardous context.

XML as a Format for Representation and Manipulation of Data from Radar Communications2001Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

XML was designed to be a new standard for marking up data on the web. However, as a result of its extensible and flexible properties, XML is now being used more and more for other purposes than was originally intended. Today XML is prompting an approach more focused on data exchange, between different applications inside companies or even between cooperating businesses.

Businesses are showing interest in using XML as an integral part of their work. Ericsson Microwave Systems (EMW) is a company that sees XML as a conceivable solution to problems in the work with radar communications. An approach towards a solution based on a relational database system has earlier been analysed.

In this project we present an investigation of the work at EMW, and identification and documentation of the problems in the radar communication work. Also, the requirements and expectations that EMW has on XML are presented. Moreover, an analysis has been made to decide to what extent XML could be used to solve the problems of EMW. The analysis was conducted by elucidating the problems and possibilities of XML compared to the previous approach for solving the problems at EMW, which was based on using a relational database management system.

The analysis shows that XML has good features for representing hierarchically structured data, as in the EMW case. It is also shown that XML is good for data integration purposes. Furthermore, the analysis shows that XML, due to its self-describing and weak typing nature, is inappropriate to use in the data semantics and integrity problem context of EMW. However, it also shows that the new XML Schema standard could be used as a complement to the core XML standard, to partially solve the semantics problems.

    Abstract [en]

Background: Telephone counseling exists worldwide and it’s a easy way for the patient to come in contact with care.  The assessment process is made more difficult because the nurse can’t see the patient, which requires a broad knowledge. Telephone counseling is making it possible for the nurse to perform the nursing work without physically meet the patient. Aim: To describe the nurse's experience of telephone counseling. Method: A literature review based on 11 articles with qualitative approach. Results: Three categories emerged from the analysis; The sense of work, Meeting the patient in the telephone counseling and Doing your own assessments. The categories is supported a total of seven subcategories. Discussion: Nurses experience the work in telephone counseling as stressful, which can affect the caring relationship with the patient. In the assessment over the telephone the nurse ask more questions than at a physical meeting to create an understanding of the patient's life-world. This can lead to a more individualized care for the patient. Conclusion: The nurse feels that the work in telephone counseling is stimulating and rewarding. The caring relationship is crucial to how the nurses feel about their work. The nurse is experiencing some difficulties, one of these is to make decisions and an assessment without seeing patient.

On the determination of constitutive properties of adhesive layers loaded in shear - an inverse solution2003In: International Journal of Fracture, ISSN 0376-9429, E-ISSN 1573-2673, Vol. 123, no 1-2, p. 49-62Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

A method to determine constitutive properties of thin adhesive layers loaded in shear is presented. The test specimen consists of two adherends joined by the adhesive layer. By loading the specimen antisymmetrically with respect to the adhesive layer a state of pure shear is ensured. To avoid instability the test specimen is designed to give a non-uniform stress distribution in the adhesive layer. This is achieved by using a long specimen loaded at one side. The method is based on an exact inverse solution which is derived utilizing the balance of the energetic forces of the applied loads and of the adhesive at the start of the adhesive layer. The method is intended for determination of both hardening and softening behaviour of adhesives but is confined to monotonic loading

On the instantaneous energy release rate of the end-notch flexure adhesive joint specimen2004In: International Journal of Solids and Structures, ISSN 0020-7683, Vol. 41, no 16-17, p. 4787-1807Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The energy release rate of the ENF adhesive joint specimen is derived. The resulting formula accounts for the presence of an adhesive layer with a possibly non-linear constitutive relation. The actual form of the constitutive relation need not to be known a priori. It is shown that measurements of both the applied load and the adhesive deformation at the crack tip are needed to determine the instantaneous value of the energy release rate. Experimental results show that the influence of the deformation of the adhesive layer can be substantial. The stability of the ENF-specimen is studied and a method to estimate the critical value of the crack length, accounting for the flexibility of the adhesive layer, is presented. In the analysis, the adherends are modelled as elastically deforming Euler–Bernoulli beams and the intermediate adhesive layer is modelled as a material surface transmitting shear stress between the adherends.

Stress analysis of axially and thermally loaded discontinuous tile core sandwich with and without adhesive filled core gaps2011In: Composite structures, ISSN 0263-8223, E-ISSN 1879-1085, Vol. 93, no 7, p. 1621-1630Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

An analytical study is performed to investigate the stress states in an axially and thermally loaded sandwich structure with a discontinuous ceramic tile core. General and simplified models are developed to determine stresses in the constituents of the sandwich structure with and without adhesive in the gaps between adjacent tiles. A general model that allows local bending of the face sheet and a simplified model which assumes uniform through-thickness stress distribution in the face sheets are developed. It is shown that the normal stress in the face sheet decreases when the gap is filled by adhesive, although the tile stress increases. The analytical model shows that normal and shear stresses at the face/core interface can be reduced by filling the gaps between tiles. Filled gaps also elevate the axial stiffness of the structure. Model results are verified by comparison to a previously developed analytical model and finite element analysis. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

    Abstract [en]

Three-point flexure loading of sandwich beams with a core consisting of discrete ceramic tiles (DTSS) is considered. The tile gaps may be bonded or unbonded (open gaps). The analysis utilizes a layer-wise beam theory approach. The general formulation for the displacements and stresses in the face sheets, face/core adhesive layer, and core is derived. Solutions for stresses and displacements of the beam constituents are obtained from finite element formulation based on analytical solution of the face sheet/tile unit cell. The approach is verified by comparison to stress results obtained from ordinary finite element analysis where each layer is modeled discretely. Effects of load introduction and support conditions on the effective flexural stiffness are examined. It is demonstrated that the face sheets experience substantial stress concentrations at the tile joint locations, especially if the gaps are unfilled. Analysis of beam compliance reveals sensitivity to details of load introduction and support conditions, especially when the span length becomes comparable to the tile length.

Stability of beam-like fracture mechanics specimens2012In: Engineering Fracture Mechanics, ISSN 0013-7944, E-ISSN 1873-7315, Vol. 89, p. 98-113Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Test specimens used to determine the interlaminar strength of composites as well as the strength of adhesive layers are known to occasionally suffer from instability. Thus, even though the experiments are performed under controlled load-point displacement, the experiments are terminated prematurely by unstable crack propagation. Often there exists a critical crack length which must be exceeded in order to obtain stable crack propagation. In this paper, a general method to assess the stability of beam-like fracture mechanics specimens is developed. Both systems subjected to a single load and the more general situation with several independent loads are treated. A simple formula is derived for the critical crack length for one-parameter loading. The only parameter necessary as input is the compliance of the un-cracked specimen. For the case of non-proportional loading, stability is determined by studying the eigenvalues of a symmetric matrix. Other findings quantified in the paper are the effect of orthotropy, the influence of a flexible interphase layer and the influence of the compliance of the loading device.

    Abstract [en]

Palliative care is practices in all care institutions in Sweden. With this study we wanted to elucidate factories that influence’s the nurse’s assessment and value of pain to patients who are dying. We wonted to illuminate how important it is that the nurse does a correct assessment of pain because all patients deserve to die with out pain. The aim of the study was to describe factories that influence nurse’s assessment and value of the pain of patients in the palliative care. The method that’s been used was a qualitative literature study. The result showed that the nurse experiences assessment of pain as complicated because of many different reasons, for instance lack of knowledge and difficulties to communicate with certain patients groups. The result also showed that they lacked sufficient knowledge and experience in order to do assessment of pain in a correct way and they were missing of good sense of confidence in their professionals.

Background: In Sweden the primary reason for heart transplants is severe heart failure. Heart transplants are performed both at Sahlgrenska University hospital and at Skånes University hospital. Patient undergoing several extensive investigations before he or she will be considered for the waiting list. Primary factor for receiving a heart is first of all the patient who is in the greatest need of a new heart and the patient most suited to receive the donated heart. Previous studies show that patients feel the waiting time to be unpredictable. Aim: To describe patients’ experiences of the time before a heart transplant. Method: Qualitative content analysis was used as the analysis method and seven blogs were applied. Results: Life is seen from a new and different perspective. A common factor for patients with heart failure was the physical limitation they felt. Life stopped for a while, and a waiting to regain “life” grew strong. Family and nursing staff was thought to play an important role. To maintain a positive attitude was thought to be a criterion to manage the anticipations. Conclusion: A patient waiting for a heart transplant experiences a change in their life world. To allow proper care it is important that the nurse recognizes this change and acknowledge it.

    Abstract [en]

In this study we investigated girls and boys choices of games and choice of materials as well as different patterns of communication between the sexes. We have observed the children’s choice of play materials and games in preschool. Girls ' and boys' communication between each other were observed in three environments. These three environments comprised a typical girl playroom which included kitchen supplies, dolls and dress up clothes, a typical boy playroom which included building supplies, cars, and toy tools and a neutral room. Based on personal experience, girls often play in the girls’ playroom while boys often choose to play in the construction area. By observing in different environments, we could examine the importance of the environment for girls and boys of communication between each other. The study is based on the social learning theory which argues that children do as we do. That is children have role models and through them learn quickly the meaning of what is considered to be a girl or boy. This result shows that the pre various gender codes of the children's choice of games and materials, and in communication. I could see that the girls and boys often chose to play the same kind of games and play with the same material at the preschool. The boys were playing, however, more violent and played many racing and war games. The girls played more gently and quietly and played more care and beauty games. Despite the fact that both sexes used the same materials you could see clear gender patterns in their behavior. An example of this would be that the girls often shaped clay as pastries and food while the boys often shaped this as balls and old men. The girls also used the very pink, yellow, white and purple colors in their creations while the boys' choice of colors dominated by blue, green, brown and red. One could also see clear patterns of communication between girlsand boys. This is when the children on some occasions discussed the male and female characteristics and behaviors with each other. We have discussed the importance of the environment in children's creation of gender in preschool. Children talk about what's around them and it is important to create an environment where children can get a broader view of masculinity and femininity.

We wanted to find out how the customer wants to be treated by the staff in a clothing store. We have focused on the personal contact between staff and customers. Our report thus focuses not on the physical products but on the staff conduct and behavior towards the customer, based on what it wants. The theory we have used largely reflects how staff should respond, but not how the customer wants to be treated. We decided to find out the customer opinions through a questionnaire survey. To make the report more specific, we also chose to look at the difference between male and female customers. We also studied the difference between age groups of customers from 20 years up to 49 years. To make it easier for the staff to respond to their particular customer group correctly.

Constitutive Behaviour and Fracture of Adhesive Layers: Inverse Methods and Energetic Balance2004Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other scientific)
    Abstract [en]

In the automobile industry, current demands on reduced emissions with maintained or even increased crash worthiness, forces the industry to seek weight-reducing designs. The possibility to use lightweight materials is obviously attractive. At joints, these lightweight materials have to be connected to high-strength or low-cost materials. In this context adhesive joining can provide a flexible solution. The method adds little weight to the structure, it allows for material combinations that are not possible to weld, and it provides increased stiffness to the structure as compared to the conventional spot-welding procedure. Moreover, electrolytic isolation of the multi-material joints is achieved.

In this thesis, experimental methods are developed to determine the complete stress-deformation relation for an adhesive layer loaded in shear. Generally, the stress distribution is non-uniform in the test geometries used. Evaluation of experiments is performed using an inverse method. The idea is to measure the energy release rate as a function of the crack tip deformation. The stress-deformation relation is obtained by a subsequent differentiation. The method is shown to be capable of capturing the complete stress-deformation relation under stable loading conditions.

A method to accurately determine the energy release rate is needed for the inverse method to be successful. A closed form expression for the energy release rate of the end-notch flexure adhesive joint specimen (ENF) is derived in this thesis. An approximate formula containing measurable quantities is also given. It is shown that both the applied load and the crack tip deformation are needed to determine the instantaneous value of the energy release rate of the ENF-specimen. Experimental results show that the influence of the crack tip deformation can be substantial. An alternative specimen is also analysed theoretically.

An initial theoretical study on mixed mode fracture of adhesive layers is also given in this thesis. A detailed comparison is made of the mode-mixity obtained using two different, frequently used mechanical models; the beam/adhesive layer model, and the continuum model, i.e. a model neglecting the presence of the adhesive layer. It is tempting to assume that the two methods would produce similar results for the case of a thin adhesive layer. However, this is only the case for geometries which are materially and geometrically symmetric with respect to the adhesive layer. For asymmetric joints, on the other hand, the two models are found to predict fundamentally different values of the mode-mixity. Moreover, the mode-mixity of the beam/adhesive layer model is found to depend highly on the relative stiffness of the adherends and the adhesive layer. This dependency is found to be quantified through two parameters.

Flexure of beams with an interlayer: symmetric beams with orthotropic adherends2008In: Journal of Mechanics of Materials and Structures, ISSN 1559-3959, E-ISSN 2157-5428, Vol. 3, no 1, p. 45-62Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Analysis of the three-point flexure loading of a symmetric beam configurationconsisting of two identical adherends joined by a flexible layer is presented. Aclosed-form solution is presented in the form of a layer-wise approach, andshows excellent agreement with finite element results. Particular emphasis isgiven to the global beam compliance. The results show that a thin, sheardeformable layer may effectively decouple the responses of the two beams.Furthermore, in contrast to ordinary beams, the presence of an overhangreduces the beam compliance. These effects are quantified and discussed.Experiments on aluminum adherends joined by a rubber layer were conductedover a range of overhang lengths in a three-point flexure fixture, and verygood agreement between measured and predicted beam compliance was noted.

Flexure analysis of unsymmetric orthotropic beams with an interlayer2009In: International Journal of Solids and Structures, ISSN 0020-7683, E-ISSN 1879-2146, Vol. 46, no 10, p. 2093-2110Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper presents a layer-wise stress and deformation analysis of a three-layer beam configuration consisting of two dissimilar orthotropic adherends of different thicknesses that are joined together by a deformable interlayer of finite thickness. Analytical solutions for the case of three-point flexure loading are presented for both compressible and incompressible interlayers. Parametric analysis reveals the influences of asymmetry of moduli and adherend thicknesses, interlayer thickness, and overhang of the beams on the beam compliance. Analytical predictions of beam compliance show very good agreement with finite element results. Experimental measurements of compliance of various unsymmetric beams consisting of aluminum adherends separated by a rubber interlayer were performed in order to validate the analysis. Excellent agreement between measured and predicted compliance values was observed.

Energy release rate and mode-mixity of adhesive joint specimens2007In: International Journal of Fracture, ISSN 0376-9429, E-ISSN 1573-2673, Vol. 144, no 4, p. 267-283Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Fracture behaviour of adhesive joints under mixed mode loading is analysed by using the beam/adhesive-layer (b/a) model, in which, the adherends are beamlike and the adhesive is constrained to a thin flexible layer between the adherends. The adhesive layer deforms in peel (mode I), in shear (mode II) or in a combination of peel and shear (mixed mode). Macroscopically, the ends of the bonded part of the joints can be considered as crack tips. The energy release rate of a single-layer adhesive joint is then formulated as a function of the crack tip deformation and the mode-mixity is defined by the shear portion of the total energy release rate. The effects of transversal forces and the flexibility of the adhesive layer are included in the b/a-model, which can be applied to joints with short crack length as well as short bonding length. The commonly used end-loaded unsymmetric semi-infinite joints are examined and closed-form solutions are given. In comparison to the singular-field model in the context of linear elastic fracture mechanics, the b/a-model replaces the singularity at the crack tip with a stress concentration zone. It is shown that the b/a-model and the singular-field model yield fundamentally different mode-mixities for unsymmetric systems. The presented closed-form b/a-model solutions facilitates parametric studies of the influence of unbalance in loading, unsymmetry of the adherends, as well as the flexibility of the adhesive layer, on the mode mixity of an adhesive joint.
