Toward a Supporting KM Model of Concept Generation in Small Architectural Firms2016Ingår i: Revista Eletrônica Gestão & Sociedade, ISSN 1980-5756, Vol. 10, nr 27, s. 1477-1500Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Design is an activity that formulates, physically and mentally, the “environment” of human (designer and user) and the “artifact” interaction. To develop the mentioned “interaction” it is vital to understand the mechanism of the design and designers’ behavior and approaches as a manageable knowledge-based outlook. According to our literature review, there is not any specific integrated model based on Knowledge Management (KM) and sharing information explaining the “Architectural Creation and Conceptualization”. In this paper, it has been emphasized that architectural design is a creative process of converting knowledge and information into products and/or services (Durst et al., 2014), based on requirements into an upper level of awareness as the product concept and capturing the new knowledge as the solutions which are complete, clear, and consistent. Regardless the normative considerations, an organizational framework based on knowledge for architecture SMEs, can improve the overall performance of the architecture design enterprises. The objective of this article is to propose the need of a new approach toward “Architectural Design Process Syntax” (Yousefi, 2014) based on the developing a KM visual system/model illuminating the managerial approach in the process. The final Visual KM model could be used as a conceptual reference for architectural design process in architectural small and medium offices (SMEs). The authors have mainly followed the literature study, task analysis based on interviews and questionnaires and also visual models, as the assessment and result methodology. This article also reflects the lack of application of the key knowledge management initiatives in architecture SMEs and highlights the essential of a managerial approach toward the question by presenting some potential line of research.

Understanding champion behaviour in a health-care information system development project – how multiple champions and champion behaviours build a coherent whole2016Ingår i: European Journal of Information Systems, ISSN 0960-085X, E-ISSN 1476-9344, Vol. 25, nr 1, s. 47-63Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Champions are commonly suggested as a means of promoting the adoption of information systems. Since there are many different definitions of the concepts of champion and champion behaviour in the literature, practitioners and researchers may be confused about how to exactly use these concepts. A qualitative analysis of a single case study in a Swedish health-care organisation enabled us to explain how different champion behaviours relate to each other and how multiple champions interact. Combining our rich case observations with an analysis of champion literature reveals how champion behaviours form a coherent and meaningful whole in which networks of different types of champions at different levels in an organisation utilise their network of relations, their knowledge of the organisation and their insight into strategic decision-making politics to time and orchestrate the framing of innovations and the involvement of the right people. In conclusion, championing is a complex performance of contextually dependent collective social interaction, varying over time, rather than a heroic act of one individual promoting an idea. Future studies need to focus more on how the relations between different champions and their behaviours develop across innovations and over time, in order to develop a richer understanding of championing.

Using IT-Supported Knowledge Repositories for Succession Planning in SMEs: How to Deal with Knowledge Loss?2016Ingår i: Handbook of Research on Human Resources Strategies for the New Millennial Workforce / [ed] Patricia Ordoñez de Pablos and Robert D. Tennyson, IGI Global, 2016, s. 393-406Kapitel i bok, del av antologi (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

In the context of succession planning a huge number of critical knowledge can be at risk. This challenges smaller firms in particular. Based upon this, the chapter intends to highlight the contribution of IT-supported repositories to small and medium-sized enterprises (SME) succession planning as a promising approach to better cope with the risk of knowledge loss. More precisely, the aim of this chapter is to analyze different types of knowledge loss in the capture process with SME succession planning to demonstrate the potentials and deficiencies with IT-supported knowledge repositories. The findings presented in this chapter will hopefully contribute to a better understanding of how to deal with knowledge loss in the capture process when using IT-supported knowledge repositories for SME succession planning.

    Accounting principles and judgement2015Ingår i: International Journal of Business Strategy, ISSN 1553-9563, E-ISSN 2378-8585, Vol. 15, nr 2, s. 69-82Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Accounting principles are a set of ethical constructs that primarily serve to shift accounting towards the locus of ethical judgment. As such, principles help putting the ethical accountability at the “fields” of the entities and provide judgmental relationships or “fit” between ethical consideration and standards as well as various practices of accounting in innumerable ways. However, the current research debates of the ethical issues in accounting have been discursively shaped upon a set of distinctions that researchers make between two sets of dominant standards. These standards are drawn from the contexts of U.S, respectively International Accounting Standards Board (IASB) codifications. This notion should be added that these standards are uncritically defined as being either rules-based or principles-based. In fact, the current accounting debate treats the ethical issues in accounting through the focus on the technical features of the standards. This study will argue that the ethical problem of accounting cannot be adequately approached by the repeated references into the technical natures of the rules-based and principles-based standards. By highlighting the ethical roots of the accounting principles, we will emphasize that analysis of the standards and ethical issues in accounting needs to be judgmentally associated with the propositional promises of the accounting principles.

Entrepreneurially oriented in what? A business model approach to entrepreneurship2015Ingår i: Journal of Small Business and Enterprise Development, ISSN 1462-6004, E-ISSN 1758-7840, Vol. 22, nr 3, s. 433-449Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to illustrate and argue for the necessity of deconstructing the entrepreneurship concept by analyzing entrepreneurial orientation (EO) at various levels of the business model.

Design/methodology/approach – Literature review supplemented with five illustrative cases.

Findings – A business model approach to entrepreneurship enables identification of the component of the business model in which entrepreneurship was started. This has several implications for analysis of the EO-performance relationship and for the identification of antecedents to EO.

Originality/value – The EO of firms has generally been analyzed at a generic level, i.e. the concept has been used to measure and analyze the overall entrepreneurship of firms. In this paper, the authors argue that EO can be present in various dimensions of a business and that firms can be entrepreneurial in certain areas and conservative in other areas.

Factors Predicting Consumers' Assessment of Advertisments on Social Networking Sites2015Ingår i: International Journal of Digital Information and Wireless Communications (IJDIWC), ISSN 2225-658X, E-ISSN 2225-658X, Vol. 5, nr 2, s. 111-123Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Marketers act on social networking sites (SNSs) in order to be more efficient in merchandising their products and/or services. Even so, the scope of the published studies regarding the assessment of advertisements on social networking sites (SNAs) is limited. Consequently, the present study aimed to consider credibility and interactivity, in addition to information, entertainment and irritation values, as main factors for consumers’ assessment of SNAs, as perceived by SNSs’ users. An analysis of empirical data helped to identify four main factors for assessing SNAs. These were: information value, entertainment value, credibility value and interactivity value. Irritation value was the only factor that had no significant effect on the assessment of SNAs. Furthermore, based on the beta coefficients, the information and entertainment values of SNAs, in conjunction with credibility and interactivity values, had different outcomes from previous studies. Consequently, the interactivity value was the strongest among the four predictors for assessing SNAs.

Fiery Spirits in the context of institutional entrepreneurship in Swedish healthcare2015Ingår i: Journal of Health Organisation & Management, ISSN 1477-7266, E-ISSN 1758-7247, Vol. 29, nr 4, s. 515-531Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose – Clinical governance and leadership concepts can lead to more or less successfulimplementations of new clinical practice. The purpose of this paper is to examine how Fiery Spirits, asinstitutional entrepreneurs can, working in a team, implement sustained change in hospital clinicalpractice.Design/methodology/approach – This paper describes two case studies, conducted at two Swedishhospitals over a period of two years, in which changes in clinical practice were implemented. In bothcases, key-actors, termed Fiery Spirits, played critical roles in these changes. The authors use aqualitative approach and take an intra-organizational perspective with semi-structured in-depthinterviews and document analysis.Findings – The new clinical practices were successfully implemented with a considerable influenceof the Fiery Spirits who played a pivotal role in the change efforts. The Fiery Spirits persuasively, based on their structural and normative legitimacy and the adoption of learning processes, advocated, and supported change.Practical implications – Fiery Spirits, given flexibility and opportunity, can be powerful forcesfor change outside the trajectory of management-inspired and management-directed change.Team members, when inspired and encouraged by Fiery Spirits, are less resistant to change and morewilling to test new clinical practices.Originality/value – The paper complements literature on how the Fiery Spirit concept aligns withconcepts of clinical governance and leadership and how change can be achieved. Additionally, thefindings show the effects of legitimacy and learning processes on change in clinical practice.

Hållbar kommun: Att balansera konkurrerande värden2015Rapport (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [sv]

Innovating and Exploiting Entrepreneurial Opportunities in Smart Cities: Evidence from Germany2015Ingår i: Creativity and Innovation Management, ISSN 0963-1690, E-ISSN 1467-8691, Vol. 24, nr 4, s. 601-616Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Smart City initiatives are considered a vehicle for achieving sustainable development of urban growth. This paper explores the conditions and factors that affect innovation in Smart Cities from an entrepreneurial vantage point. Data was obtained through a series of interviews with German entrepreneurs active in Smart Cities. Beyond examining the importance of a set of factors that originate from the extant literature, our findings suggest that entrepreneurs believe that Smart City initiatives need a clear vision to drive their development and growth and that government has a key role to play in bringing the necessary resources and stakeholders together.

Intellectual capital dimensions: state of the art in 20142015Ingår i: Journal of Intellectual Capital, ISSN 1469-1930, E-ISSN 1758-7468, Vol. 16, nr 1, s. 58-100Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to review extant literature to identify models intended to measure/classify intellectual capital (IC) to establish the current body of knowledge that has been built since the review by Marr et al. (2004).

Design/methodology/approach – The study consists of a systematic review of peer-reviewed articles on IC classification. The review was conducted for the period 2004-2014 in order to reach the aim. To ensure that all major models are included, important works developed prior to 2004 were captured as well.

Findings – The review resulted in 83 additional models indicating continued research activities with regard to the topic. These models were merged with prior IC models and mapped on a timeline. The timeline clarifies that 2008, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013 represent the years of greatest research activity (outcomes). Additionally, the analysis of the list of IC frameworks resulted in the development of an IC Meta model. It synthesizes research activities in the field and highlights the main IC dimensions and sub-dimensions.

Research limitations/implications – This study may not have enabled a complete coverage of all existing peer-reviewed articles in the field of IC classification. Yet, it seems reasonable to assume that the review process covered a large proportion of studies available.

Originality/value – By aggregating and consolidating the IC frameworks covered, the study does not only provide an IC Meta model, but also promising directions for future research.

Knowledge management in environmental sustainability practices of third-party logistics service providers2015Ingår i: Vine: The Journal of Information and Knowledge Management Systems, ISSN 0305-5728, E-ISSN 1474-1032, Vol. 45, nr 4, s. 509-529Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to provide a structured literature review on knowledge management (KM) and KM strategy in environmental sustainability practices of logistics service providers. The paper highlights the nature and scope of existing research and identifies areas for future research. Design/methodology/approach – The study consists of a systematic review of existing research regarding KM in sustainable logistics. In all, 38 refereed research papers formed the basis of analysis. This methodology allows for the minimization of researcher bias and the maximization of reliability and replicability. Findings – The literature review made possible the identification of three basic elements through which building-up appropriate KM approaches and KM strategies in the area of environmental sustainability by third-party logistics service companies will be enhanced: customer relationship management, quality of human resources and the adoption of information and communication technology tools and systems. Research limitations/implications – This study may not have enabled a complete coverage of all articles in the field of KM in the context of environmental sustainability practices of logistics service companies. Yet, it seems reasonable to assume that the review process covered a large share of studies available. The main research implications deriving from the study concern research methods, analysis of factors hampering/supporting the implementation of KM in practices related to environmental sustainability, development of measures to demonstrate the impact of KM on sustainability practices and role of different stakeholders in the implementation of KM in environmental sustainability practices. Originality/value – To the best of the authors ' knowledge, no systematic literature review on this topic has previously been published in academic journals.

Knowledge waste in organizations: A review of previous studies2015Ingår i: Brazilian Journal of Operations & Production Management, ISSN 1679-8171, Vol. 12, nr 1, s. 160-178Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

In this paper, we are interested in the knowledge that is “wasted” in organizations, that is existing relevant knowledge that is overlooked in the process of knowledge conversion. Given the competitive pressure firms are facing in today´s business environment, a waste of knowledge is not only costly but also dangerous. This means that we consider knowledge from a knowledge at risk perspective. Having this in mind, the purpose of this paper is to review research on knowledge waste in organizations to establish our current body of knowledge regarding this topic. The study consists of a systematic review of 51 peer-reviewed articles addressing knowledge waste in organizations. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, no systematic literature review on this topic has previously been published or presented. The topic seems to be a promising field for intensive research and offers a variety of future research avenues. In view of practitioners, the study´s finding may enable an increased awareness towards the areas where existing knowledge is at the mercy of “waste”. This can assist practitioners to better cope with risks related to this waste and, therefore, better exploit the (limited) knowledge base available.

Kompetensbehov och kompetensförsörjning inom informationssäkerhet från ett samhällsperspektiv2015Rapport (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [sv]

    Perceptions of trust in physician-managers2015Ingår i: Leadership in Health Services, ISSN 1751-1879, E-ISSN 1751-1887, Vol. 28, nr 4, s. 281-297Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to explore the dual role of physician-managers through an examination of perceptions of trust and distrust in physician-managers. The healthcare sector needs physicians to lead. Physicians in part-time managerial positions who continue their medical practice are called part-time physician-managers. This paper explores this dual role through an examination of perceptions of trust and distrust in physician-managers. Design/methodology/approach – The study takes a qualitative research approach in which interviews and focus group discussions with physician-managers and nurse-managers provide the empirical data. An analytical model, with the three elements of ability, benevolence and integrity, was used in the analysis of trust and distrust in physician-managers. Findings – The respondents (physician-managers and nurse-managers) perceived both an increase and a decrease in physicians’ trust in the physician-managers. Because elements of distrust were more numerous and more severe than elements of trust, the physician-managers received negative perceptions of their role. Research limitations/implications – This paper’s findings are based on perceptions of perceptions. The physicians were not interviewed on their trust and distrust of physician-managers. Practical implications – The healthcare sector must pay attention to the diverse expectations of the physician-manager role that is based on both managerial and medical logics. Hospital management should provide proper support to physician-managers in their dual role to ensure their willingness to continue to assume managerial responsibilities. Originality/value – The paper takes an original approach in its research into the dual role of physician-managers who work under two conflicting logics: the medical logic and the managerial logic. The focus on perceived trust and distrust in physician-managers is a new perspective on this complicated role.

    Abstract [de]

Service innovation and its impact: What do we know about?2015Ingår i: Investigaciones Europeas de Direccion y Economia de la Empresa, ISSN 1135-2523, Vol. 21, nr 2, s. 65-72Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Despite the growing body of literature concentrating on service innovation, empirical research focusing on measuring its impact, mainly at firm-level, remains scarce. Adopting the perspective that the ability to monitor the service innovation process and to assess its impact is a pre-condition to properly manage it, we conduct a literature review of recent empirical studies on the measurement of service innovation to ascertain our current body of knowledge. We restrict our review to the period covering 2006 to 2014, as previous research has been extensively covered by Adams, Bessant, and Phelps (2006) and concentrate on published empirical academic articles which clearly examine “service innovation” and its impact on performance. Relying on several inclusion and exclusion criteria, thirteen empirical studies were retained and are discussed in this paper. Although this study does not claim to be exhaustive, it shows that knowledge on the relationship between service innovation and performance is limited and that this area of research deserves further scrutiny. We conclude with some avenues for further research, in view of stimulating more research in this promising yet emerging field.

    Abstract [en]

The aging workforce will soon lead to a number of retirements in Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises(SMEs) that cannot be compensated for by the decreasing pool of succeeding individuals. Consequently,SMEs need to find ways to cope with the demographic challenge and its possible consequences. Otherwise, its capability to act is at risk in situations when critical staff is leaving. This clearly illustrates the needfor a proper succession planning. One that takes into consideration the knowledge at stake. The aim ofthis chapter is to draw attention to the danger of knowledge loss as a consequence of an aging workforceand to discuss three approaches SMEs can use to better understand the knowledge at risk. Set againstthe importance of SMEs in most of the world, the study´s results provide relevant insights into how tocope with knowledge at risk in order to secure the firms´ survivability.

Sustainable Knowledge Management and the Outsourcing of Core Competences—Does that Fit Together?: Initial Insights from a Literature Review2015Ingår i: Sustainable Operations Management: Advances in Strategy and Methodology / [ed] Andrea Chiarini, Springer, 2015, s. 15-35Kapitel i bok, del av antologi (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The issue of sustainability has been frequently discussed in recent years. Knowledge and its management represent aspects that fit nicely with one of the underlying conditions of sustainability, i.e. durability. Indeed, proper knowledge management can help firms in coping with present and future business challenges. The outsourcing of secondary business functions has become popular with many firms. What is increasingly present is the outsourcing of knowledge competences that is the firms’ core competences. This trend means a challenge for both the firms’ knowledge management and their sustainability. Against this background, the purpose of this paper is to review extant research on the outsourcing of knowledge competences to establish our body of knowledge and to identify gaps justifying further research activities. The study is based on a systematic review of peer reviewed empirical articles on the outsourcing of knowledge competences. This proceeding proves evidence that there are a small number of papers addressing outsourcing and its consequences for knowledge management (KM) sustainability. The recommendations derived from the findings can assist researchers, managers and consultants to better understand the link between knowledge competence outsourcing and KM sustainability. This increased understanding can particularly be useful for managers as better decisions will be possible.

    Abstract [en]

The outsourcing of knowledge processes has become a popularbusiness practice. This situation provides both new opportunities and threats forfirms’ and their development. In this context, it would be interesting to discussthe link between knowledge process outsourcing (KPO) and sustainableorganisations that pursue not only economic issues but also social andenvironmental ones. Against this background, the purpose of this paper is toreview extant research on KPO and bring it together with the concept ofsustainable organisations. To do so, the paper relied on a combination of recentreviews of scholarly papers on KPO. This proceeding enabled the identificationof three main conditions that need to be fulfilled in order to increase the successof the integration of the two terms. The conditions are governance, partnershipand organisation members. The recommendations derived from the findingscan assist researchers and other actors in better understanding the requirementsof KPO for sustainable organisations.

The absorptive capacity of family firms - how familiness affects potential and realized absorptive capacity2015Ingår i: Journal of Family Business Management, ISSN 2043-6238, E-ISSN 2043-6246, Vol. 5, nr 1, s. 73-89Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

    Purpose

Absorptive capacity is a key competitive advantage and is defined as the capacity to absorb knowledge from the environment. Although some studies have examined how various antecedents to absorptive capacity differ between family firms and non-family firms, no studies have set out to specifically analyze absorptive capacity in the context of family firms. This paper discusses the ability of family firms to absorb external knowledge by analyzing the relationship between “familiness” and “absorptive capacity”.

    Design/methodology/approach

By reviewing and combining studies on absorptive capacity and knowledge-management practices of family firms, new insights into the absorptive capacity of family firms are developed.

    Findings

It is argued that due to higher levels of social capital, familiness is positively related to the ability to transform and use external knowledge (i.e. realized absorptive capacity). However, firms with high levels of familiness are likely to be inferior in acquiring and assimilating external knowledge (i.e. potential absorptive capacity).

    Originality/value

Although previous studies have analyzed various knowledge-management practices of family firms, no studies have set out to specifically explore how familiness affects various dimensions of absorptive capacity.

    Abstract [en]

Several countries have introduced programs intended to develop or increase their competitiveness. Entrepreneurial universities in particular are considered critical actors in order to reach this goal. While in advanced economies many of this type of universities have been established over the years, this is not the situation in emerging economies. These economies are only in the beginning of this development. Against this background and the activities found in Turkey, the aim of this chapter is to shed light on the current state of Turkish universities regarding their development into entrepreneurial universities. The findings reported may be useful for academics, policymakers, and other actors interested in the topic.

This ineffect has significantly further increased globalization of commerce in the Nordic countries. The purpose of this research is to examine the effect of more traditional models of consumer choice regarding local vs global products in this context. While the major metro areas of Scandinavia have always been largely global, this research reaches further into the central part where attitudes and globalization tends to be adopted at a slower pace

The medical leadership challenge in healthcare is an identity challenge2015Ingår i: Leadership in Health Services, ISSN 1751-1879, E-ISSN 1751-1887, Vol. 28, nr 2, s. 83-99Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose– The purpose of this article is to describe and analyse the identity challenges that physicians with medical leadership positions face.

Design/methodology/approach– Four qualitative case studies were performed to address the fact that identity is processual, relational and situational. Physicians with managerial roles were interviewed, as well as their peers, supervisors and subordinates. Furthermore, observations were made to understand how different identities are displayed in action.

Findings– This study illustrates that medical leadership implies identity struggles when physicians have manager positions, because of the different characteristics of the social identities of managers and physicians. Major differences are related between physicians as autonomous individuals in a system and managers as subordinates to the organizational system. There are psychological mechanisms that evoke the physician identity more often than the managerial identity among physicians who are managers, which explains why physicians who are managers tend to remain foremost physicians.

Research limitations/implications– The implications of the findings, that there are major identity challenges by being both a physician and manager, suggest that managerial physicians might not be the best prerequisite for medical leadership, but instead, cooperative relationships between physicians and non-physician managers might be a less difficult way to support medical leadership.

Practical implications– Acknowledging and addressing identity challenges can be important both in creating structures in organizations and designing the training for managers in healthcare (both physicians and non-physicians) to support medical leadership.

Originality/value– Medical leadership is most often related to organizational structure and/or leadership skills, but this paper discusses identity requirements and challenges related to medical leadership.

Their own stories - how Polish construction workers posted to Sweden experience their job situation, or resistance versus life projects2015Ingår i: Transfer - European Review of Labour and Research, ISSN 1024-2589, E-ISSN 1996-7284, Vol. 21, nr 1, s. 23-36Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This study draws primarily on in-depth interviews with nine male Polish construction workers posted to Sweden in the early 2010s. The emphasis lies on their own experiences of being exposed to what they saw as unjust working conditions, and why they accept them or react against them. The overarching research questions are why Polish workers go to Sweden, and, more importantly, why they stay even when they feel unfairly treated or directly cheated by their employers. The main points of interest are wages, work environment, employment contracts and relations with different labour market players, including the EU. It was very clear that none of the Polish workers had ever heard of the EU Posted Workers Directive. Still, the lack of serious resistance, our study argues, was not because of poor knowledge about their legal rights, but was linked to a wish to fulfil a ‘life project’ back home in Poland, such as building a house, starting a company, being able to afford to start a family and raise children, or saving for retirement. This wish helped the workers to swallow ‘unfair’ treatment.

Understanding knowledge leakage: a review of previous studies2015Ingår i: Vine: The Journal of Information and Knowledge Management Systems, ISSN 0305-5728, E-ISSN 1474-1032, Vol. 45, nr 4, s. 568-586Artikel, forskningsöversikt (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose – This paper aims to review research on the topic of knowledge leakage to establish the current body of knowledge and, on this basis, to suggest some promising avenues for future research.

Design/methodology/approach – The study consists of a systematic review of 57 refereed empirical articles on knowledge leakage.

Findings – The findings contribute to a more holistic view of the topic and complement the study of knowledge management. Additionally, a conceptual framework is proposed that aims at guiding and informing future research activities.

Research limitations/implications – This study may not have enabled a complete coverage of all empirical articles in the field of knowledge leakage. Yet, based on the chosen research methodology, it seems reasonable to assume that the review process covered a large share of studies available.

Originality/value – To the best of the authors’ knowledge, no systematic literature review on knowledge leakage has previously been published in academic journals.

Welfare States and the Need for Social Protection of Self-Employed Migrant Workers in the European Union2015Ingår i: International Journal of Comparative Labour Law and Industrial Relations, ISSN 0952-617X, E-ISSN 1875-838X, Vol. 31, nr 4, s. 391-410Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

So-called bogus – or false – self-employment has been increasingly highlighted as a problem within the European Union (EU), especially since the first eastern expansion in 2004. Although the concept is not fully clear in legal terms, a common denominator of most definitions is that bogus self-employment can be seen as ‘disguised employment’, occurring when someone who has an employee status in practice is not classified as an employee, in order to hide the actual legal status and to avoid costs such as taxes and social security contributions. In the light of different welfare systems, industrial relations and EU legislation, this article discusses this issue, drawing empirically on findings from a project about precarious employment in twelve EU countries. Although there are some fairly strict definitions of the ‘employee concept’ within the EU, the difficulties of identifying the employer leave the bogus self-employed in a legal limbo. No European Social Model has curtailed this problem, despite an expressed desire to address all aspects of precarious work. However, the inclusion of all ‘self-employed’ workers within social insurance systems and workers with an employee status in practice seems possible also under existing EU regulations. It is rather a matter of goodwill and the resources to scrutinize the terms and conditions of employment.

Women and Wildcats: Unofficial Women’s Strikes in Sweden in the 1970s and 1980s2015Ingår i: Workers of the World: International Journal on Strikes and Social Conflict, ISSN 2182-8938, Vol. 1, nr 6, s. 64-83Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [sv]

While the strike propensity in manufacturing declined in the 1980s and 1990s, it remained high or even increased in services, health care, education and so on. Thegrowing portion of tertiary sector employment has further moved the searchlight from men to women, as the demographic transformation in work has promoted a feminization of strikes. However, what if we go back in history, to when strikes and industrial conflict was still mainly a men’s concern? Did women go on strike at all, and if so, how did their strikes differ from the overall pattern? The 1970s was the decade of “resurgence of class conflict” in Western societies, including Sweden, with an outstanding upsurge of strikes in many countries. There is an affluence of studies of both the 1970s strike-waves and single strikes in this rebellious decade, but few of them deal with female-dominated strikes. This article explores women’s strikes in Sweden in the 1970s and 1980s with special attention to the treatment in the Labour Court, since the article finds a remarkable difference in legal outcome between “male” and “female” strikes.

Critical Success Factors in Capturing Knowledge for Retention in IT-Supported Repositories2014Ingår i: Information, ISSN 2078-2489, Vol. 5, nr 4, s. 558-569Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

In this paper, the authors demonstrate the suitability of IT-supported knowledge repositories for knowledge retention. Successful knowledge retention is dependent on whatis stored in a repository and, hence, possible to share. Accordingly, the ability to capture theright (relevant) knowledge is a key aspect. Therefore, to increase the quality in an IT-supported knowledge repository, the identification activity, which starts the capture process, must besuccessfully performed. While critical success factors (CSFs) for knowledge retention andknowledge management are frequently discussed in the literature, there is a knowledge gapconcerning CSFs for this specific knowledge capture activity. From a knowledge retention perspective, this paper proposes a model that characterizes CSFs for the identification activity and highlights the CSFs’ contribution to knowledge retention.

Purpose - Social representation theory (SRT) is a growing theory in social psychology research. SRT is about how individuals co-construct representations of various objects in different social settings. These social representations govern the attitudes and actions of individuals and groups. In spite of the growing interest in SRT in various fields, no studies have used SRT to understand resistance to organizational change. Thus, the purpose of this work is to illustrate how SRT can be used to understand the concept of resistance to change.

Design/methodology/approach - Review of the relevant literature on resistance to change and SRT in order to develop a conceptual framework for understanding resistance from the standpoint of SRT.

Findings - We develop a model that illustrates how three interrelated objects, i.e. the organizational process and the pre- and post-change situation, are co-constructed in social contexts. Also, we discuss how representations of these objects can co-exist (cognitive polyphasia). Our study illustrates the complexity of resistance to change by deconstructing the concept.

Originality/value - Application of SRT in order to analyze resistance to organizational change is a novel approach that provides several new insights. For example, whereas most publications regard advocates of change as sense-givers in the change recipient’s sense-making process, we argue for a more constructionist approach. Thus, all actors involved in the change process will affect each other and together co-construct the social representations. These social representations govern attitudes to change.
