Professional employees’ strategic employment of the managerial logic in healthcare2018Inngår i: Qualitative research in organization and management, ISSN 1746-5648, E-ISSN 1746-5656, Vol. 13, nr 2, s. 126-143Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to describe and analyze how physicians and nurses strategicallyemploy the managerial logic.Design/methodology/approach – A qualitative case study incorporating interviews and observations.Findings – Neither physicians nor nurses were prone to strategically employing the managerial logic. However, when doing so nurses were able to acknowledge the legitimacy of managerial impact on practice, whereas the physicians were not. Consequently, physicians might find other, more subtle, ways tostrategically employ the managerial logic.Originality/value – This paper argues for and makes explicit the applicability of qualitative methods inorder to delineate actors’ strategic use of available and accessible institutional logics, the conditions for suchusage, as well as the multiplicity of actors’ interactions that needs to be taken into account when conductingqualitative data analysis of such occurrences. By the merits of the qualitative research approach utilized inthis study, novel insights concerning the strategic use of the managerial logic in the everyday work ofphysicians and nurses were obtainable. These insights emphasize the necessity of acknowledging situational, organizational and institutional context, incorporating inter-professional power discrepancies and relationsvis-à-vis managers.

The Influence of Policy Makers over Lean Implementations in Healthcare2019Inngår i: International Journal of Health Governance, ISSN 2059-4631, Vol. 24, nr 3, s. 222-229Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose – It is often argued that Lean enables the challenges of contemporary healthcare delivery to be tackled in relation to consistently high-quality care, while utilizing the full potential of available resources. Nevertheless, system-wide implementations of Lean are notoriously difficult and the desired results are often not achieved. Policy makers play a pivotal role in enabling healthcare organizations to enact more precise strategies and frameworks through steering professionals toward both adopting guidelines and becoming more comfortable with Lean as an improvement technique. However, the difficulties in achieving system-wide implementations of Lean indicate their shortcomings in this respect. The purpose of this paper is to outline how these shortcomings may be manifested empirically. Design/methodology/approach – A qualitative content analysis of Swedish counties’ annual reports with regard to how the implementation of Lean is presented and promoted. Findings – The study shows that policy makers have vague and divergent perceptions of what Lean is, and that they often reduce Lean to a means of achieving cost reductions and savings, while relying on the education of managers as the primary factor to ensure implementation. Originality/value – In order for policy makers to facilitate system-wide implementations of Lean, this study indicates that they need to rectify their simplistic perception of Lean while elaborating on why and how Lean should be implemented in healthcare.

The Logics of Healthcare - In Quality Improvement Work2017Doktoravhandling, med artikler (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

Quality improvement (QI) has become a cornerstone in contemporary healthcare organizations with the aim of enabling management that facilitates efficiency and effectiveness, while providing a consistent correlation between health spending and indicators of access to and quality of care. However, despite years of reform which have attempted to change healthcare professionals’ practice, traditional professional modes of working remain relatively stable and entrenched. Previous research has highlighted the fact that healthcare professionals’ active involvement in quality improvement work (QIW) is often lacking. Such a lack is often explained by professionals’ scepticism towards management, managers, and organizationally related improvement initiatives.  Yet, there is a shortage of studies which focus on analysis at the level of the actor when studying healthcare professionals’ involvement in QIW.

This dissertation presents a qualitative case study of the QIW undertaken by a multi-professional diabetes care team. It enables a description and analysis of healthcare professionals’ involvement in QIW at the actor level of analysis. A theoretical framework, consisting of the combination of institutional logics and institutional work, is applied in order to focus on varied and complementary aspects of institutional dynamics while simultaneously emphasizing the embeddedness of actors’ actions and interactions.

The study shows that healthcare professionals’ identification with and adherence to the professional logic in general impairs their involvement in QIW. Adherence entails perceiving professional judgments and discretion as legitimate in guiding practice and work. However, the study emphasizes that adherence to the professional logic varies amongst professionals representing different professions. This means that healthcare professionals’ acceptance of the bureaucratic control of work as legitimate differs - enabling diverse approaches and practices in QIW. Furthermore, the study illustrates that the physicians’ relative dominance hinders the utilization of multiple perspectives in the multi-professional team. This finding elucidates how dominance and hierarchization of logics enable healthcare professionals’ practice to remain relatively stable, despite managerial attempts to change and alter it. Finally, the study delineates the interactions needed in order to bridge institutional logics at the actor level of analysis. Such interactions are characterized by reciprocal acts of claiming and granting influence that constitute creative/disruptive institutional work, enabling actors to find new approaches to each other and further facilitate healthcare professionals’ involvement in QIW.

Healthcare quality improvement work: a professional employee perspective2017Inngår i: International Journal of Health Care Quality Assurance, ISSN 0952-6862, E-ISSN 1758-6542, Vol. 30, nr 5, s. 410-423Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

    Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to describe and analyze conditions that influence how employees engage in healthcare quality improvement (QI) work.

    Design/methodology/approach

Qualitative case study based on interviews (n=27) and observations (n=10).

    Findings

The main conditions that influence how employees engage in healthcare QI work are professions, work structures and working relationships. These conditions can both prevent and facilitate healthcare QI. Professions and work structures may cement existing institutional logics and thus prevent employees from engaging in healthcare QI work. However, attempts to align QI with professional logics, together with work structures that empower employees, can make these conditions increase employee engagement, which can be accomplished through positive working relationships that foster institutional work, which bridge different competing institutional logics, making it possible to overcome barriers that professions and work structures may constitute.

    Practical implications

Understanding the conditions that influence how employees engage in healthcare QI work will make initiatives more likely to succeed.

    Originality/value

Healthcare QI has mainly been studied from an implementer perspective, and employees have either been neglected or seen as passive resisters. Weak employee perspectives make healthcare QI research incomplete. In our research, healthcare QI work is studied closely at the actor level to understand healthcare QI from an employee perspective.

Organising Healthcare with Multi-Professional Teams: Activity Coordination as a Logistical Flow2016Inngår i: Offentlig Förvaltning. Scandinavian Journal of Public Administration, ISSN 2000-8058, E-ISSN 2001-3310, Vol. 20, nr 4, s. 53-72Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Multi-professional teams are now common when organising healthcare. Such teams areconsidered to resolve fragmentation issues amongst units and their functions, facilitateefficient and high quality care and are also deemed to enable different professions to meetand exchange experience and knowledge. The expected consequence is superior decisionsand improved care. However, research suggests that the deployment of multi-professionalteams within healthcare organisations is problematic with regard to knowledge sharingand integration between different professional groups. While often recognised, the reasonfor this shortcoming has rarely been explored in depth. This study consequently elaborateson the factors hindering knowledge sharing through illustrating and discussing thelogics of different professional groups and the ensuing consequences when multiprofessionalteams interact. The finding is that the teams are being utilised by the medicalprofessions in accordance with their professional logic. This results in the coordination ofactivities, incorporating the patient flow logistics amongst the different professions; makingthe impact of multi-professional teams concrete in practice and illustrating their potentialpositive outcomes for professionals and patients, even though they are not operatingas forums for overt knowledge integration for the different professions.

Regeneration and local economy: Toward an innovative urban contribution model2019Inngår i: The International Journal of Tarrah (The Designer), ISSN 2008-9538, Vol. 5, nr 14, s. 100-108Artikkel i tidsskrift (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

The main objective of the current study is to proceed toward the potential of innovative regeneration derived from the local economy in Odlajan (a neighborhood in the historical district of Tehran, 12th municipal). In three steps we have addressed the subject; the first step consists of the concept of urban regeneration and the characteristics of the innovative economy associated with three basic categories (people, business and place). In the next feature, we have examined the objections of that the current status of the selected site; the unsustainable development, reduction of the sense of belonging, and un-sustainable regeneration. The third step, e have tried to define a prospect conceptual model based on innovative urban contribution including aforementioned aspects by short-term measures and long-term strategies.

Toward a Tactical “Urbanpreneur”2019Inngår i: The International Journal of Tarrah (The Designer), ISSN 2008-9538, Vol. 5, nr 14, s. 10-19Artikkel i tidsskrift (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

Looking at the city in parts, the place theory can be recognized in the term of three main axes; good city form, sequential movement, and the mutual impact of every physical and social component. In the place theory the main focus is the understanding process of the cultural aspects and human characteristics of the places. Some areas experience mutual interaction between city and citizens more than others. It is evidently considerable from literature that the most successful examples toward space enhancement (or the transformation of space to place) have come from two approaches: Urban entrepreneurship (urban-preneur) and the small changes which result in big social impact; a sense of the tactical action. These two approaches, Tactical Urbanism as an effective formula for putting good ideas into practice, and “Urban-preneurs” while embed in their socio--ecological environments -cities and towns- to draw influence are about making the place (for citizens) toward a more interacting liv- able one. This report is dedicated to clarifying the question of how street city life might contribute to alternative urban futures focusing on the mentioned two approaches. To this purpose first, we describe the notions of Tactical Urbanism and Urban Entrepreneur main characteristics associated with aforementioned approaches, then the report continues with the concept of Sharing Economy and urban entrepreneurship term, which focuses on recent decades economy approaches. Next, the current scene in two selected case studies, 30Tir Street in Tehran and pedestrian street zone Rasht city in Gilan province has been investigated. As the third part, we have demonstrated a path to open a wide dispensary to some possible tactical “Urban-preneur” in selected case studies.

Reconstructing resistance and renewal in public service unionism in the twenty-first century: lessons from a century of war and peace2018Inngår i: Labor history, ISSN 0023-656X, E-ISSN 1469-9702, Vol. 59, nr 1, s. 3-14Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This special issue uses the occasion of the centenary of the Whitley Commission Reports to illuminate the contemporary crisis in public service industrial relations from a historical perspective. In all six countries studiedBritain, France, Germany, Italy, Sweden and the USApublic service employment is labour intensive and quantitatively significant in the overall economy. Public services have also been major targets of neoliberal reforms, starting in the UK and the USA at the turn of the 1980s and in the other countries about a decade later. In addition, the relatively high union density and the political dimension of public services and public union strategies have been major targets of new public management and more latterly austerity. However, the regressive period has had a differential impact in different countries. In the liberal market economies of the UK and the USA, the neoliberal turn has destabilised traditional patterns of public sector industrial relations to greatest effect. While in the more coordinated market economies, traditional arrangements and values have been more resistant to austerity and neoliberal reforms. We attempt to shed light on these differential impacts through a critical analysis of the historical evolution of public sector industrial relations in each country.

    Knowledge creation in knowledge-intensive small and medium-sized enterprises2019Inngår i: International Journal of Knowledge-Based Development, ISSN 2040-4468, E-ISSN 2040-4476, Vol. 10, nr 1, s. 75-94Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The paper presents insights into the knowledge creation process in three Icelandic knowledge-intensive small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Data were obtained through a case study methodology. The findings indicate that the three knowledge-intensive companies use complex, non-routine knowledge to deal with complex problems. Often, practical problems are a starting point for new ideas and knowledge development. Brainstorming, collaboration, teamwork, informal and formal gathering and other knowledge creation activities are used in the knowledge creating process. The companies showed many characteristics of SMEs with little formal structure and strategies. The subject of knowledge creation has received little attention in the literature. Thus, the study responds to this situation by giving insights into the knowledge creation processes in knowledge-intensive SMEs.

    Abstract [en]

Strong professionals who influence the development of healthcare services have dominated healthcare organizations for many years. However, this dominance has been challenged recently through patient involvement. One method of achieving patient involvement is experience-based co-design (EBCD), in which patients and healthcare professionals work together to improve care. Patient involvement has considerable potential, but also presents certain challenges. This article addresses these challenges using experiences from patients and healthcare professionals who participated in two action research (AR) projects that aimed to improve patient experienced quality using EBCD. The paper shows that patient involvement in quality improvements challenge the traditional roles of professionals and patients. The role as codesigner embraces new perspectives for healthcare professionals that force them to step out of their comfort zone. Accordingly, healthcare professionals are able to view patients as equal partners in improvement work. Reflecting dialogues offered eye-opening stories for patients and healthcare professionals that enabled them to construct a common picture of care. This study contributes to earlier research that argues that an AR approach can strengthen important values for EBCD projects. The findings show that the combination of EBCD and AR is a promising approach to address the challenges of patient involvement in healthcare improvement.

    Abstract [en]

Even though the study of risk management (RM) in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) has increased recently, there have been few cross-country studies. Therefore, the present research project can be considered as one of the first of its kind drawing upon an extensive empirical study into the status of RM in SMEs. More precisely, the cross-country study, involving SMEs from China, Germany and Scotland, investigates differences in their RM practices. The findings, which were based on a web-based survey, provide a clearer understanding of the personal and organisational factors that have influenced the RM practices of SMEs in these countries. This study also sheds light on the influence that the perception of environmental uncertainty has on the RM efforts in SMEs.

Impact of competition from unregistered firms on R&D investment by industrial sectors in emerging economies2018Inngår i: Technological forecasting & social change, ISSN 0040-1625, E-ISSN 1873-5509, Vol. 133, s. 179-189Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This research evaluates the impact of competition from unregistered firms on R&D investment by formal firms in emerging economies by considering their industrial sector and institutional factors, such as intellectual property rights. We performed a study using the propensity score matching approach and the World Bank Enterprise Survey of 16 Latin American emerging economies. We observed that the R&D investment response of formal firms varies according to the typology of industrial sectors. Supplier-dominated industries reduce investments in R&D when confronted with the informal sector. However, science-based, specialized suppliers and scale-intensive industries do not alter their investments. In addition, the level of intellectual property (e.g., IPRI) modifies the effect of the informal sector on R&D investment. Formal firms reduce their investments in R&D when the IPRI environment is underdeveloped. This reduction does not occur in highly developed IPRI environments. We also discuss the finding's theoretical and practical implications and suggest avenues for future research.

    Abstract [en]

This study creates a framework for evaluating the sales impact of adding an online channel to an existing network of physical stores. Using a unique database consisting of pooled customer data from a Swedish retailer's online and offline stores, it investigates the purchase behavior of customers before and after the introduction of an online channel. The data overcome a crucial obstacle present in previous studies in that they permit matching of individual-level customer data for both online and offline behavior. The results show significant and substantial effects of online channel introduction on customer acquisition as well as on cannibalization of physical stores.

    Abstract [en]

Organisational culture has repeatedly been reported as the vehiclefor organisational change, but there is still a lack of research that investigatesthe impact of HRM on organisational culture which is attributed tothe absence of comprehensive HRM frameworks. Based on a sample of161 German-speaking enterprises in Austria, Liechtenstein and Switzerland, this study responds to this gap by developing, operationalising and evaluating atypology of culture-oriented HRM systems and their effects on organisationalculture. The results demonstrate that HRM plays a crucial role in developingand shaping an organisational culture in general and that each of the developedHRM system, namely employee-, innovation-, profession and task-orientedfosters the development and/or change of a specific organisational culture inparticular.

    Abstract [en]

The study of modes of open innovation in smaller companies is still in the development phase. This study responds to this situation and, drawing upon a data set from 4,679 Turkish small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), explores the influence of inbound open innovation and coupled open innovation on marketing innovation as well as process and organisational innovation in SMEs. Results reveal major differences between small and medium-sized Turkish enterprises with regard to both marketing innovation as well as process and organisational innovation. While inbound open innovation positively influences both, marketing as well as process and organisational innovation, the effects for small-sized enterprises are even higher than for medium-sized ones. Coupled open innovation positively influences both innovation outcomes as well, although the effects for medium-sized enterprises are significantly higher than for smaller ones.

    Abstract [en]

Moral and ethical concerns seem to emerge in the western societies current development regeneration; among the most visible recent changes of education, it is now inconceivable that the reduction of the educational activities to technical endeavor without ethical consideration is totally absurd. The theorists of the crisis of values , the illustrations of ethical questions, the traditions and to their modern aspirations, the multi-cultural society necessities, etc are issues which must be reconsidered in the sense of pedagogical concerns. Ethical issues, in general, are experiencing a revival in advanced modernized societies characterized by multi-cultural complexities. Education is one the main platforms of the mentioned regenerated interest of the discussion and it has been considered by all the involving actors in the pedagogic world that the process of education is a complex endeavor requiring several communicative competences. The eventual argument about professional ethics would cover the pedagogical relationship, the human qualities requirements in the teaching profession, justice and equity, etc. The mentioned communicative/relational dimensions have been being influenced by a wide range of various actors with whom the instructor/teacher interacts; the interactions which could lead to value-oriented dilemmas and conflicts and challenge the ability of the teachers’ ethical judgment.

The Core of Design Thinking and its Architectural Application2016Inngår i: DESIGNER, ISSN 2008-9538, nr 12, s. 40-51Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The term design thinking is used to refer to the study of the practices of working designers (Melles et al., 2006), the methods and processes for investigating challenges, acquiring information, analyzing knowledge, and positioning solutions in the design and planning fields (Meinel & Leifer, 2011) by combining “empathy, creativity, and rationality”. Architectural theory has evolved over time, to reflect the development of new materials, new construction, new structures, new philosophies, new socio-cultural contexts, new scientific findings, and, of course, new technology. As Dorst (2011) emphasises ‘Design Thinking’ has been part of “the collective consciousness of design researchers since Rowe used it as the title of his 1987 book and different models have emerged since then. Nowadays, “Design Thinking” is identified as an exciting new paradigm for adopting designerly practices dealing with complex problems to build up a “conceptual framework”. Architectural logic provides us with a various of approaches toward the reasoning in design exploring potential value of the design process. In this paper the author will move from the architectural process definitions to a broad descriptions of design thinking and its application in the architectural design process. Since the process of design and its logical principles look quite complex, an integral attitude has been introduced in order to elaborate multi-step process avoiding the natural paradox of the sense of a complex statement of Design Process and Design Thinking. It is on this particular aspect of the creative design that we position our work: how to design a software tool support, and even improve, creativity in the early stages of the design? We will restrict ourselves to this in a specific area, that architectural design that we describe in the next section.

    Abstract [fa]

    Abstract [en]

Haj Hussein was smart enough to protect his properties during World War I and the collapse of the Ottoman Empire. He had become rich through trade with Damascus, and had bought or otherwise acquired some ten acres. Haj Hussein Hadid was the cleverest man in Mosul in the early twentieth century, eventually became the governor of Mosul. It was the beginning of the story of Zaha. Mohamed, Haj Hussein's son Mohammad was the first Iraqi graduate of the University of London, School of Economics. He was Zaha's father. Muhammad returned to Mosul to check the progress of the newly formed country and finally became the Finance Minister of Iraq. Since Zaha was born his father was a lawmaker and influential figure. Zaha Mohamed Hadid didn't know if she was going to go the same way, so she was thinking whether she should go the same way or not. She started mathematics at the American University of Beirut, and after graduation, while she was just 21 -year-old, attended Architecture Association School in London and later became a student of Metropolitan. The article tries to develop a better understanding of the role of the family roots of the architect to counter a purely perception of her architectural ideas. The story of Zaha Mohamed Hadid, from the efforts of Haji Hussein during World War I in Mosul to the legend of a lonely girl in the unfamiliar tracks of western architecture, has a lot to teach us about the life and eternity of a legend. Without such a powerful family, Zaha would not have become such a famous architect. In 2013, for the first time in the history of Iranian architecture, it has been announced that one the biggest projects of the capital, Tehran, would be designed by a British architectural firm, Zaha Hadid Architects. In a realistic point of view and according to the scope of this discussion, hiring such a famous architect could create significant value for a capital in Middle East.

Form follows knowledge: A Thematic Synthesis Toward the KMS-based semantic approach in Architecture SMEs2016Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

There is a traceable current methodic shift in the field of “Architectural Design” which could be explained as the systematic interconnection of “scientific method” and “design methods” based on the objectives of the “structural logic” of Design; the prospect “systematic” approach would provide the designers/architects/Architecture-SMEs with a possible wide range of technological practical potentials to be deciphered to the operational facilitation in the associated enterprises. The mentioned structural logic could be characterized as a “design support” facilitation based on the “information processing and evaluation” for dealing with all aspects of the knowledge in the process as a Knowledge Management System (KMS) in the sense of improving the collaboration and enhancing the Knowledge Management (KM) process. Since the visual aspects of the design process, such as diagrams, contain a structure of natural cognitive “networks of relationships”, the “meaning” is situated between the linkages of the network which would be visually presented and actualized by the architectural artifact. The semantic associations would be a strategy-based approach of textual relationship between concepts and knowledge for the textual determination and source-target mapping as an effective tool in term of developing the knowledge mining computational analogy tools. In this paper, the main focus is the dynamicity- and creativity-oriented as a flow of knowledge exchange between the design actors in the knowledge-based architectural decisions. The required knowledge and information analysis in the conceptual phase and the related creative notions, beside the fact that concepts are verbal/textual/visually representable, emphasizes the need of a knowledge mapping as a reliable context for Conceptualization in architecture SMEs. The formalization/formulization of the design knowledge/information and the associated interaction/dynamicity based on the designers’ cognitive/creative attitude are still a field to be developed; in this paper, besides the emphasizing the importance of knowledge and its cognitive approaches, the integration of “systematic design approaches” and “knowledge-based systems”, in a semantic sense, have been illustrated. Eventually, the current paper indicates the foundation of a model of such a knowledge-based semantic manner using a review and thematic analysis method.

    Abstract [en]

Design is an activity that formulates, physically and mentally, the “environment” of human (designer and user) and the “artifact” interaction. To develop the mentioned “interaction” it is vital to understand the mechanism of the design and designers’ behavior and approaches as a manageable knowledge-based outlook. According to our literature review, there is not any specific integrated model based on Knowledge Management (KM) and sharing information explaining the “Architectural Creation and Conceptualization”. In this paper, it has been emphasized that architectural design is a creative process of converting knowledge and information into products and/or services (Durst et al., 2014), based on requirements into an upper level of awareness as the product concept and capturing the new knowledge as the solutions which are complete, clear, and consistent. Regardless the normative considerations, an organizational framework based on knowledge for architecture SMEs, can improve the overall performance of the architecture design enterprises. The objective of this article is to propose the need of a new approach toward “Architectural Design Process Syntax” (Yousefi, 2014) based on the developing a KM visual system/model illuminating the managerial approach in the process. The final Visual KM model could be used as a conceptual reference for architectural design process in architectural small and medium offices (SMEs). The authors have mainly followed the literature study, task analysis based on interviews and questionnaires and also visual models, as the assessment and result methodology. This article also reflects the lack of application of the key knowledge management initiatives in architecture SMEs and highlights the essential of a managerial approach toward the question by presenting some potential line of research.

    Abstract [en]

The importance of the Games has already been perceived for more than three decades by the use of computers in education as an aid in the process of knowledge construction. In Gamification, the game is dislocated from the distraction function, since it has influence in the sensory and cognitive development of the individual. The elements of the Gamification do not follow a specific rule or a standard, and can be applied in whole or in part of an educational process, remodeling of existing procedures in both theoretical tasks or practical procedures. Developing a gamification platform will depend on the purpose, available resources and cognitive pedagogical bases, since the concept tends to redefine the learning process, rescuing the interest and participation with a view to intellectual growth. The current architectural education methods in Iranian universities suffer from lack of coverage of methods both artistically and technologically; the mentioned methods are mostly following the traditional teacher-focused trainings.. Nowadays, considering the advancement of new educational technologies, one of the most fundamental issues facing the current educational systems would be the contextual innovation which seems to change the learning methods both in content and method. The new processes and methods have formed a new playground which makes it possible to take the next step and make a decision on the set of new tools, educational goals and quality of the courses in the discipline architecture. The method of teaching based on the gamification approaches is more effective than other educational methods but there must be a comprehensive platform accordingly. The current study extends the authors' prior work examining the possibility of the formulating a model-based integration of architectural design education with a gamified platform based on the associated literature and resulting in a comprehensive understanding of role games and serious games in the overall educational field. Finally, we have tried to shape the conceptual model of the platform as a framework for creating a followable pattern for regenerating a game-based architecture design education.

Dimensions of Knowledge Management in the Enhancement of Sociability in Urban Spaces/Places2017Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Architects and urban researchers have long held the view that the semantical analysis of “space syntax” and understanding physical and social dynamics of public spaces, play a vital role in the social and economic life of the social units and also the formation of public culture, the identity and the notion that could be called “sense of place”. Public spaces/places allow the citizens to have interaction with each other while meeting on the ostensibly ground in a planned and unplanned means. By definition, if we consider a "social urban place" as an integrated object, it will have a tendency to support the emotional expressions of the mentioned sense, including the human-oriented social common achievements, which in a way would eventually make our memories and life courses. In this sense, the crucial importance of the designing of public place/space as an integrated issue, related to the social identity and also the cultural intangible and tangible attitudes, would shape a confrontation strategy which could cause a dramatic change in the mentioned social units. In a broader approach, as many commentator also argue, the the underlying support of the sociability improvement is fundamentally developed by obtaining a comprehensive perception of “knowledge” associated with the city and its public spaces/places. While urban analysts and practitioners’ ideas differentiate in the sense of the approach toward the place/space, as a contextual phenomenon, they have generally accepted that without managing the mentioned “knowledge”, the corresponding data and information would be overloaded increasingly. Consequently the decision-making, the acceleration of the urban progress, stimulating cultural changes and the innovative attitudes etc. will encounter a significant failure risk; so that, abnormal resonance and chaos will occur over and over in the urban place/space. considering that there is no traceable regulating ground base/strategy in Iran to provide and improve urban-generated knowledge, based on social identity, particularly the practical management of the mentioned knowledge remain a major issue for the sociability improvement in urban public places/spaces. In order to respond to this gap, the current paper discusses the integrated identity factors in the management structure of urban public places. In order to achieve the mentioned purpose, in an analytic mode of understanding, we observe relationships between “space syntax” semantically; then, based on theoretical investigations and literature review we distinguish fundamental issues enhancing the identity and quality of place. As the result, we have presented a managerial method of the gained place identical knowledge in order to promote the sociability of public spaces. We have also examined the relationship between this public space and the associated social aspects and developed a perceptual semantic platform to manage the related knowledge of the place identity which is associated with the physical built environment. The conclusion contains a conceptual model representing a sociability-oriented knowledge management visualization of the public urban place/space  considering architectural identity factors.

Mashrabiya Structural Element as a Pattern in Contemporary Architecture: نگاهی به عنصر کالبدی «مشربیه» در معماری و استفاده از آن در معماری امروز2016Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [fa]

When AI, VR & AR Help Architects to Compose Solutions: The story of a Futuristic Creative Exploration of Design2016Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

One of the fundamental issues in the Architecture and urban studies, is creativity and adapting to the new trends of innovation, which in a set is the solution to the design wicked problems. Meanwhile, in a general point of view, there is a significant increase in accordance with the use of Information Technology (IT) as a tool of the perception of the sensing of place/space. Territories of Artificial Intelligence (AI) covers the self-ruling arranging robotic frameworks to explore through the surrendering data/information; the data which could be provided by the computerized visual system. Consequently, the mentioned line of technology would metamorphose the complex multi-layers of the architectural spaces, even more complex. In this paper we discuss about the current state-of-art in Virtual Reality, (VR), Augmented Reality (AR) and also Artificial Intelligence (AI) through the possible intermediate-level of processing as the object/feature/pattern path and the recognition and tracking which could be carried out by the associated scenarios. The manuscript describes VR, AR and AI as helpful tools to achieve better comprehension of semantic layers of place/space. Our methodology is testing and also literature review of case studies. This study identifies the main factors in the mentioned state-of-art influencing the architectural creativity and innovation in the sense of architecture as a branch of the discipline of design and management through the process of observing and visualization. At the end of the article, we conclude that the paradigm of visualization is a key factor to present appropriate answers for the architectural wicked-problems.

Marketing strategy in emerging market alliance: A longitudinal study2014Inngår i: Journal of international business and entrepreneurship development, ISSN 1747-6763, Vol. 7, nr 4, s. 309-325Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Abstract: By applying a longitudinal perspective, this study examines how an alliance formulates and implements its marketing strategy based on motives, resources, learning, network and performance, in Central and Eastern Europe(CEE). An in-depth study on a Hungarian alliance between a Swedish medical engineering company and a local partner has been conducted. The data is collected in two periods: 1999 and 2009, and for the convenience of the analysis, the result has been presented in two phases. By comparing the phases, it is shown how the environment in which the alliance operates changes and how the alliance responses by improving its marketing strategy. Major variation of the strategy includes focus on small and dental clinics, development of intensive contacts with big hospitals to gain huge contracts after the reformation of the healthcare sector and finding a balance between lowering price and maintaining high quality of the products and services.

The Appropriation of Blockchain for Small and Medium-sized Enterprises2019Inngår i: Journal of Innovation Management, E-ISSN 2183-0606, Vol. 7, nr 1, s. 26-45Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This article aims to provide a conceptual framework for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to evaluate the appropriation of blockchain technology for their business needs and challenges. This conceptual framework aims to respond to the problem of increasing speculations surrounding the blockchain that is considered to be an absolute and innovative solution to many business related problems. However, this argument might not be realistic for SMEs despite this assumption. The main argument of the article is that SMEs should be skeptical while evaluating the appropriation of this technology for their business needs and they should follow a tailored approach whilst adopting it. Otherwise, the likelihood is high that a short-term and unstructured knowledge management process to adopt blockchain will end up with a waste of resources. The present paper conceptualizes an appropriation framework within nine factors namely, reduction of costs, internalization, digital representation of assets, unalterable data recording, network size, transparent and synchronized ledger, scalability, fair trade, and financing. Given the field’s infancy state of development, the paper relies on a qualitative document analysis involving SME literature and extant literature and white papers of blockchain applications.

Financial Resilience: The Role of Financial Balance, Profitability, and Ownership2018Inngår i: The Resilience Framework: Organizing for Sustained Viability / [ed] Stefan Tengblad, Margareta Oudhuis, Singapore: Springer, 2018, s. 111-131Kapittel i bok, del av antologi (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This chapter focuses on financial resilience, which is an important aspect of the organizational resilience framework presented in Chap.  3. Financial resilience includes the balance between assets and debts and also resources like profitability, liquidity and ownership structure. The financial resilience of six of the largest Swedish companies is analyzed in the chapter. The selection includes companies with strong, average, and weak financial resilience, which enables us to contrast different companies to each other. The data is mainly collected from annual reports. The chapter concludes that it is necessary to have a profitable core operation to achieve strong financial resilience, but it is also important to have strong and long-term-oriented owners who retain a part of the profit in the companies as a buffer for more challenging times.

Organizing Principles and Management Climate in High-Performing Municipal Elderly Care2016Inngår i: Leadership in Health Services, ISSN 1751-1879, E-ISSN 1751-1887, Vol. 29, nr 1, s. 82-94Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose – Previous research has shown that user-oriented care predicts older persons’ satisfaction with care. What is yet to be researched is how senior management facilitates the implementation of user-oriented care. The present study set out to investigate the organizing principles and management climate characterizing successful elderly care organizations.

Design – The care organization in one highly ranked municipality was selected and compared with a more average municipality. On-site semi-structured in-depth interviews with managers as well as participatory observations at managers’ meetings were conducted in both municipalities.

Findings – The results revealed three key principles for successful elderly care: 1) organizing care from the viewpoint of the older service user, 2) recruiting and training competent and autonomous employees, 3) instilling a vision for the mission which guides operations at all levels in the organization. Furthermore, using climate theory to interpret the material, in the highly successful municipality the management climate was characterized by affective support and cognitive autonomy, in contrast to a more instrumental work climate primarily focusing on organizational structure and doing things right characterizing the more average municipality.

Value – We suggest that guiding organizing principles are intertwined with management climate and that there are multiple perspectives that must be considered by the upper management, i.e., the views of the older persons, the co-workers, and the mission. The results can guide future care quality developments and increase the understanding of the importance of organizational climate at the senior management level.

Functional Economic Regions, Accessibility and Regional DevelopmentManuskript (preprint) (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

In this paper, we first present how one can create functional economic regions. Then, we elaborate on the economic activity and spatial interaction, which forms functional regions, and the development of the system of functional regions. Our presentation shows that the economy is structured in functional regions, and hence it is important to use functional regions in economic studies, in order to produce correct results, and for regional policy, in order for the policy to be effective. We observe, that the often used NUTS-regions are very large compared to the functional regions. We argue, therefore, that the use of NUTS-regions ought to be replaced by the use of functional regions. This would lead to more reliable results and better policy outcomes.

Skills Development Practices and Engineer Turnover: Insights Into Tunisian IT Services Companies2019Inngår i: Handbook of Research on Entrepreneurial Leadership and Competitive Strategy in Family Business / [ed] José Manuel Saiz-Álvarez, Jesús Manuel Palma-Ruiz, IGI Global, 2019, s. 42-62Kapittel i bok, del av antologi (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This chapter investigates the skills development practices and their relationship with engineer turnover in IT services companies (henceforth ITSC) from Tunisia. It presents a qualitative analysis of data that derived from a number of interviews conducted with human resource managers of these companies. Based on the findings, four human resources management (HRM) practices were identified that seemingly contribute to skills development in the firms investigated, which are recruitment, training, inter-project mobility, inter-firm cooperation. The findings indicate that these practices can also reduce engineer turnover rates. The chapter provides fresh insights into HRM practices of Tunisian companies, which has not attracted much attention yet.
