Tvillingskap genom livet: individualitet och relation i äldre tvillingars livsberättelser2012Doctoral thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The overall aim of this thesis was to explore, describe and understand experiences of twinship as told in the life stories of older twins. The 35 older twins who participated in this thesis were part of two longitudinal studies of older twins, SATSA (the Swedish Adoption Twin Study of Aging) and the Gender study. The study design is qualitative and the 35 interviews were collected using a narrative method. The life stories were analysed with narrative analysis (studies I and II) and qualitative, latent content analysis (studies III and IV).

According to the twins in this thesis, twinship, was described from the relationship with the co-twin(I, III, IV) and from an identity perspective (II). Twin relationships are unique and different in their own way. Three relationship patterns were identified and labelled as: nurturing, draining or superficial based on qualitative aspects (I). The differences in the three relationship patterns became even more evident during critical stages in life, for example, when getting married (III) or losing the co-twin through death (IV). These events became turning points which meant that the twins needed to adjust to a more individualized life. Twins in nurturing or superficial relationship patterns did not experience these transitions as particularly dramatic, while for twins in draining relationships these life transitions were more dramatic. From an attachment theory point of view, the older twins remained attachment figures with an unaltered attachment pattern throughout life(I). Bound together with the close twin relationship is how twins define themselves, since the twinship means handling both your individual identity and the twin identity. The self-descriptions, with emphasis on differences, are viewed against the background of how the twins experienced the environment perceiving them as a social unity and were interpreted as a desire to emphasize ones individuality as related to the twin partner and as a message to the environment of desiring to be viewed as a unique individual (II).

In summary twinship was described by most as a close, enriching relationship throughout life and for some, less enriching depending on what kind of relationship they had with their twin partner. An identity work was at the same time taking place, trying to establish a position as an individual in the twin relationship and to assert ones individuality to the rest of the environment in the message:“We are not as alike as you think!”

Older twins' experiences of the relationship with their co-twin over the life course2012In: Journal of Aging Studies, ISSN 0890-4065, E-ISSN 1879-193X, Vol. 26, no 2, p. 119-128Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Based on 35 life stories of aging twins, this study focuses on personal experiences and recollections of their relationships with the co-twin over the life course. The participants are part of two longitudinal Swedish twin studies on aging, SATSA and Gender. In the narrative analysis, three relationship patterns, labeled ‘nurturing’, ‘draining’, and ‘superficial’, emerged, pointing to qualitative aspects in the co-twin relationship. The dominating aspect was emotional closeness, which differed in the three relationship patterns. In the nurturing twin relationship pattern, emotional closeness was experienced as intimacy and yet independence, while in the draining relationship pattern it was experienced as dependence. The superficial twin relationship was experienced as distant and lacking in emotional involvement. Most of the relationship patterns seemed to remain the same throughout life. However, seen from a life course perspective, this study pointed to complexity and diversity in lifelong twin relationships.

INTERAKTION I EN OFFENTLIG ORGANISATION: Hur bedömer medarbetarna kommunikationen med sina chefer och vad blir förtroendet för chefen till följd av detta?2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Great confidence in their immediate manager is not always a given. Many factors can affect the confidence that the employees in an organization feel for the manager and this study focuses specifically on factors related to communication; follow-up, appreciation, feedback, clearness, meaningfulness and management of conflicts/relationships. It can also differ between how men and women evaluate these factors and how this is related to their trust for their manager. To study this is one part of the purpose of this examination. Previous research in this area has revealed differences between how men and women perceive and value communication. Similarly this study's results show that there are communication differences between men and women, and that they value the factors differently. Women are more satisfied with the communication they are having, but the correlation between trust and all of the studied communication factors was stronger among men. By using the social psychological theoretical perspective of symbolic interactionism we have analyzed and discussed these results. In general ourstudy shows a correlation between all of the selected communication factors and their impact on trust in the immediate manager. The study has a quantitative approach that has been carried out through a questionnaire survey in a public organization where all employees have been given the opportunity to evaluate how they assess communication by the different factors as well as trust in their manager.

Irakiska invandrares identitetsskapande i det svenska samhället2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

"Walk the talk": Kvalitativ intervjustudie i hur en organisationskultur kan förändras2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 15 credits / 22,5 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Changes are common in today's organizations and change of organizational culture is one strategy that can be used to improve profitability and achieve objectives. Changes in organizational culture are difficult to implement because of the unconscious assumptions that must be made visible and challenged. The change itself is time consuming. In social interactions individuals shape and reshape culture. According to symbolic interactionism transmission and interpretation of symbols occur through the social interaction. The purpose of this study is to gain a deeper understanding of what contributes to a change in organizational culture and how the leader may be important in this change. The qualitative interview study takes into account the organization's internal material about the change process. There were eight interviews with leaders in the support unit in order to answer the research questions. Contributing to the change according to the leaders is: consensus, measuring, support from the organization, top management and leaders as symbols. The leader is considered to be particularly important because the leader has a central role in the transfer of organizational culture. If the leader is considered to be a symbol, the leader can affect cultural change by acting according to the desired culture.

Biopolitics, Border Management and the Frame of Humanization of 'Total Institutions': Experiences and Representations of Swedish Immigrant Detention2016In: Zhurnal Issledovanii Sotsial'noi Politiki / The Journal of Social Policy Studies, ISSN 1727-0634, Vol. 14, no 2, p. 275-290Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This study addresses the issue of international migration and border management. Specifically, it focuses on the phenomenon of immigrant detention within a framework of humanizing closed institutions. With the help of structural semiotics, I examine the widely debated documentary 'Detained' (2015), which explores sociality unfolding in a detention centre in southern Sweden. I scrutinize four categories of film characters and their interrelationships. Giorgio Agamben's conception of biopolitics is used to interpret the study results. This theory highlights the fundamental vulnerability of detained non-citizens and explains this as a result of disruption in the linkages between 'natural life' and politics, which grounds the system of modern sovereignty. I argue the film should be recognized as a critique of biopolitical border regulation. It demonstrates that attempts to improve the detention system and its practices along the lines of a more civic model are both fundamentally undermined by the contradictory nature of the confinement ideology and insufficient as long as the very legitimacy of detention as a part of border control remains uncontested. On the one hand, custodial humanism is always fragmented by the organizational priorities of effectiveness and security. On the other hand, the sociality of staff-detainees is deeply framed by the overall regime of border management. As representatives of social activists, the film's producers are sensitive to the limited effects of the humanization project and attempt to mobilize public opinion to contest practices of policing irregular migration. The study concludes with an emphasis on the need for further research on civil society's response to the recent immigrant crises and its related policies.

From othering to belonging: Integration politics, social intervention and the limits of cultural ideology2017In: Zhurnal Issledovanii Sotsial'noi Politiki / The Journal of Social Policy Studies, ISSN 1727-0634, Vol. 15, no 4, p. 603-616Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

With the shift of political discourse in the European Union away from the idea of multiculturalism, the notion of 'civic integration', frequently accompanied by the language of cultural differences, has become prominent in policies and social interventions. This study explores the experiences of an integration project entitled 'Cultural Friend Tibro', initiated in Western Sweden by local authorities. The main idea of the project is to bring together representatives of different cultural groups - immigrants and local residents - and facilitate the development of friendship-like relationships. Mutual learning, exchange and joy are especially emphasised as a means to overcoming prejudices and social divisions. No specific requirements in terms of ethnicity are demanded of the participants: local residents involved in the project are not expected to be of Swedish origin. Instead, the requirement is that they possess sufficient knowledge of Swedish culture and society. Both categories of participants are considered 'cultural friends'. The procedure of 'matching' newly arrived and 'established Swedes' is hoped to initiate interpersonal interactions. Matching couples individuals or families is done with reference to gender, family situation and possible common interests or hobbies. It is left to the participants themselves to decide whether they would like to develop further relationships. In spite of the seemingly open and friendly format initially promoted by the project organisers, practices of estrangement ('othering') have surfaced in participant reflections on how the project was implemented. In this study, I identify and critically examine manifestations of othering as an effect of employing the notion of culture in the project's rhetoric, as well as possible ways by which participants may spontaneously destabilise the constructed cultural boundaries. This case study is built on the analysis of multiple sources, including ten semi-structured interviews with project participants, inquiries with the project leader, analysis of project documents and advertisements and social media materials.

"Governmentality" in the Clinical Context: The Paradoxes of Humanization of Healthcare in Sweden2015In: Zhurnal Issledovanii Sotsial'noi Politiki / The Journal of Social Policy Studies, ISSN 1727-0634, Vol. 13, no 4, p. 643-656Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The humanization of healthcare provision is a vibrant topic in academic and public discussions. Sweden has pioneered innovative educational policies seeking to forge commitment among a new generation of doctors to a "patient-centred" approach. In accordance with Michel Foucault's theoretical elaborations, this study takes the discourse of humanization to be a feature of politico-economic regulation or governing, and measures the adherence of doctors to this humanization project. Conducted in western and southern Sweden among practitioners in public primary and specialized care, the survey confirmed the importance of patient-centeredness at the level of doctors' rhetoric, self-reflection and in self-reported clinical practice. Additionally, another discourse shaping the collective professional "mentality" - the discourse of economic efficiency - emerged from the collected data, potentially destabilizing the effects of humanization.

Horizons of sustainability and individual ethics: The case of the International Space Station2019In: Zhurnal Issledovanii Sotsial'noi Politiki / The Journal of Social Policy Studies, ISSN 1727-0634, Vol. 17, no 2, p. 293-306Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Sustainability is a hot topic in contemporary politics both nationally and internationally. While the current framing of sustainability promoted at the international level favours social policies, doubts about their possible success are growing. If social aspirations are not realised, technological solutions to ecological problems might appear to be the only options. This study contributes to the field of sociology of the future. It explores and problematizes the technologically-oriented approach to sustainability. I consider a radical case of sustainable living – a spacecraft – looking at the emerging challenges to individual human ethics and the general order of sociality. More specifically, the largest contemporary manned space project, the International Space Station (ISS), is taken into analytical focus. With the help of the Foucauldian notion of governmentality, I examine routines and discourses related to the utilization of the life support system at the ISS in regard to human conduct, both terrestrial and extra-terrestrial. Mass-media materials comprise a large part of the dataset for this research. As demonstrated, techno-functionalism characterizes sustainability as governmental rationality. It imposes a subordination of individual human actors to the general order driven by systemic objectives frequently framed in pragmatic and technical terms. Specific practices, including ethically controversial ones, might be requested from individual humans in the name of the system’s stability and efficiency. Those practices are naturalized and normalized within a truth regime constituted by scientific discourse, the authority of experts, media events and the related public discussions.

Robo-Revolution: A Marxist Approach to Social Uprising in the High-Tech Age2019In: Sociologiceskoe Obozrenie, ISSN 1728-192X, Vol. 18, no 3, p. 224-244Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

With the increasing role of technological agents in contemporary society, questions surrounding the future of socio-economic organization are intensely debated. A variety of predictions have been made, ranging from conservative views that emphasize the gradual integration of techno-actors into human social collectives to radical outlooks that assume the inevitability of a dramatic historic break This study employs the method of simulation, exploring the ongoing path towards automation with the help of classical Marxism. It seeks to understand whether robots and artificial intelligence (AI) might become new value producers and a revolutionary social class. As demonstrated, the continuity of capitalist relationships may facilitate the formation of new social groups and recast class-based political agendas.

Studies on Governmentality: Six Epistemological Pitfalls2017In: Sotsiologicheskoe Obozrenie, ISSN 1728-192X, Vol. 16, no 2, p. 9-28Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The notion of governmentality, developed in the works of Michel Foucault, is actively employed across academic disciplines. Reviewing the secondary literature, this paper specifies and systematizes some particularities of Foucault's theoretical account which are reflected in contemporary studies on governmentality. Six latent epistemological obstacles in research on governmentality are described-the essentialization of power; the impossibility of agency and counteraction; latent idealism; the inconsistent presentation of governmentality; the shortage of explanatory perspective on the micro-macro linkage; and a vanishing critical standpoint-to stimulate an academic discussion on possible methodological insights capable of overcoming some of those difficulties. Those limitations are seen to be immanent in Foucault's overall theoretical account rather than the effects of deviation from it. Examples of studies associated with the fields of international relations and sociology support the central arguments of the paper. As demonstrated, the regrounding of a Foucault-inspired analysis of power in the updated version of historical materialism might have the potential to ensure rigor in governmentality research and redefine its critical intent. Further, a consensus is needed on the fundamental notions of governmentality studies to stabilize the research agenda. Recognizing the importance of Foucault's overall contribution to the understanding of contemporary phenomena and practices, scholars need to acknowledge its conceptual and social limitations.

Language training and well-being for qualified migrants in Sweden2017In: International Journal of Migration, Health and Social Care, ISSN 1747-9894, E-ISSN 2042-8650, Vol. 13, no 2, p. 220-233Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to examine the role of "Korta Vagen" (The short cut), a targeted language program for qualified migrants in Sweden, in self-maintaining, well-being and perspectives for socio-economic integration for foreigners with academic diploma. Design/methodology/approach - In-class observations, individual semi-structured interviews, focus-group interviews and written essays were used for data collection. A thematic analysis was applied as a method of data analysis. Amartya Sen's capability approach constituted a theoretical framework of the research discussion. Findings - Korta Vagen provides various resources for the participants, some of which (language training and internship) can become real advantages for employment. Others (IT, interview training and CV writing) are less translatable into concrete outcomes. The study suggests that satisfaction with the program is modulated by commitment to one's professional identity, initial language proficiency, scope of cultural knowledge, the participants' goals and the flexibility of the training offered. The acculturation frame of the program does not necessarily correspond with the objective need of many participants for quick entry into the labor market. Originality/value - Insights into the social-psychological aspects of targeted language training as a measure for socio-economic integration can serve to enhance educational and institutional policies and professional practice.

Mapping the Relationship between Personality and Electronic Commerce in a Representative Swedish sample2017Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose: According to previous research, a high degree of Openness and Neuroticism, and a low degree of Agreeableness are personality determinants of online shopping. This study aims to explore the relationship between the five factor model of personality and online shopping in a Swedish context.

Methods: 5238 individuals in a representative sample of the Swedish population responded to a survey including measures of the five personality factors (HP5i, 15 items) and online shopping. (3686 individuals were included in the analysis).

Results: A logistic regression analysis was conducted to test if personality factors (ranging from 1 = completely disagree to 4 = completely agree) predicted online shopping. The dependent variable was buying online at least one time per month. Gender, age and monthly income were control variables. Our findings indicated that online shopping was significantly (p < .05) associated with a high degree of Openness (e.g. open to feelings/emotions) and high degree of Extraversion (e.g. positive emotional experiences).

Discussion and Conclusion: People high on Openness might like to shop online because online shopping offers them an adventure, variety and new ideas. People high on extraversion might be motivated to purchase online for their need of excitability. The findings propose that online shopping primarily is triggered by emotions and affect rather than reasoning and cognition.

    Abstract [sv]

Hur skapar man psykosocialt gynnsamma lärmiljöer i skolan?: Om skolkuratorns främjande arbete2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In connection with the new school law in Sweden 2010, the school social counsellor's mission changed. One purpose of the change was to tie the school social counsellor closer to the school's overall assignment, as well as to direct the work to preferably supporting and prevention efforts. This study tries investigating how school social counsellor's perceive that they can contribute to learning environments that support pupils' learning and identity development. The theoretical foundations of the study highlight psychosocial factors in the school's learning environment and the psychosocial development of children and adolescents. Ten semi structured interviews, 40-60 minutes long, have been made with different school social counsellor's who work with pupils grade 7-9 in Västra Götaland. The results of the study show that an important part of the work on creating psychosocial supporting learning environments is to reach out to adults at the school with knowledge, approaches and ways to respond to the students. The result also shows that the school social counsellor needs good contact with the students and that the school as a whole needs to work with a psychosocial perspective in mind.

Rummet utanför staden: om individens upplevelse av Självet och interaktionen i en ickeverbal miljö på en retreatgård ur ett symboliskt interaktionistiskt perspektiv.2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Migration och identitet: En kvalitativ intervjustudie med arabisktalande kvinnliga immigranter i Sverige2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Migration is a current subject in today's society. Many people are forced to migrate to a new country, but many of them are moving for other reasons, for example to study, to work or start a family. The aim of this paper is to gain an increased understanding of Arabic speaking female immigrant’s experiences of the adaptation process and whether there is a change in gender identity. The selection consists of Arabic speaking women who have lived in Sweden for a maximum of five years. A qualitative approach has been used and data were collected through interviews and analyzed within the themes that were presented by the research. In analysis, four such themes were identified, such as identity, social relations, cultural differences and migration processes. The result of the study shows that the majority of the respondents perceive that they have been affected by migration, that they have experienced cultural differences in Sweden compared with their homelands and that they are influenced by their social relations.

Situation hemlös: En studie hur hemlöshet påverkar identitetsskapandet2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to create a deeper understanding for women managers and how they have experience opportunities and obstacles during their career in a male-dominated organization. We would also examine in which part of life this opportunities and obstacles really exist. We are investigating questions about how women managers experience their career in a male-dominated industry, what opportunities and obstacles they met during their career and also how women managers create a work life balance. This study is based on qualitative data and aims to describe the purpose from a narrative approach. The data have been collected from ten unstructured interviews, the result showed that opportunities and obstacles mainly occurs inside the work organization, and that the support from managers, but also from the private life is very important. The result also showed that the private life does not affect the career negatively as much as career affect the private life.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the essay is to investigate the experience of stress in student mothers, if it turns out that the roles they carry are incompatible. Furthermore, I want to know what factors can create this.

The study is based on a qualitative method and the empirical material is produced via semi-structured interviews in which five student mothers participated.

The result showed that the roles of student and mother of a student mother are incompatible.

It was also shown that there are factors such as behavioral expectations of a role based on the social context one is in, inadequacy as a mother or student, finding balance between these roles may be a reason for their perceived stress.

It was also stated in the results that the perceived stress has different effects on student mothers' everyday lives. There was a positive impact where their motivation to achieve the goal was increased and negative which contributed to a negative feeling such as insufficiency in order to  internalize the student role with the mother role.

Mobbning: en del av sjuksköterskors vardag?2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

    Abstract [en]

The Swedish Tax Agency is one of the most important governmental agencies as it affects all individuals of the society in some way. This studies purpose is to create a deeper understanding of why there is a discrepancy in the answers from the Tax Agency employee survey in 2013, regarding the experience of job satisfaction in relation to the perception of the Swedish Tax Agency as an attractive workplace and to the view of recommending the workplace to other people. The study uses a qualitative approach and is based on the concept of job satisfaction, which is regarded as the attitudes people feel towards their work. By means of 12 semi-structured interviews with caseworkers at a tax office in Western Sweden, an attempt was made to explain the discrepancy through analysis of employee perceptions. The empirical material was analyzed by phenomenological data analysis and the conclusions are that there is a certain degree of dissatisfaction among case workers relating to factors such as wages, lack of career paths and the experience of other people's perception of one's work and workplace.

    Abstract [en]

The study of Gender does not often explore masculinity, especially with regards to their role in reproduction in society. The social psychology perspective of the daily socialisation that occurs between media and the social structure is therefore the outset of this study. A cultural representation of men has been described from a dataset of 80 analysed films, and 239 analysed male characters from Sweden and America during the 1950s and 2010s. A qualitative- quantitative content analysis was conducted to place the analysed male characters in already existing categories of masculinity. The results showed that masculinity does not have enough space in today’s society. Due to these findings, many men no longer fit the profile into the existing categories of masculinity. The biggest differences between men from the 1950s and 2010s, was a shift in the importance of family life. Over the years, men have developed a more emotional and sensitive side to themselves. When comparing the difference between the American and Swedish man; The American man tended to dominate his work life while being a family father. Whereas, the Swedish man lived a life of a bachelor and devoted a great deal of time to his friends.

Kvinnor i Försvarsmakten: En kvalitativ studie om hur kvinnor påverkas inom ett mansdominerat yrke2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Theoretical Integration and Unification: A Focus on Justice2007In: Social Justice Research, ISSN 0885-7466, E-ISSN 1573-6725, Vol. 20, no 3, p. 263-269Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

A commonly shared goal among scientists is to reach the ‘holy grail’ of theoretical integration or unification. We list several examples of such attempts within sociology and psychology in general and, more specifically, within the subarea of social justice. A distinction is made between the seemingly interchangeable terms integration and unification. We note the scarcity of work concerned with untangling the meaning of theoretical integration, with differentiating among forms of integration, and with mapping the variety of ways in which integration might be accomplished. The five articles published in this issue of Social Justice Research, and here briefly reviewed, address these and related questions and/or exemplify theoretical integration with a focus on justice.

Distributive Justice: Revisiting Past Statements and Reflecting on Future Prospects2015In: The Oxford Handbook of Justice in the Workplace / [ed] Russell S. Cropanzano & Maureen L. Ambrose, New York: Oxford University Press, 2015, p. 15-50Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This chapter starts with brief discussions of the whens and whys of justice reasoning and acting, after which descriptions of several distributive justice theories are provided. These are analyzed on the basis of four dimensions: type of justice motivation, orientation of justice behavior, the source of justice behavior initiation, and the source of justice behavior direction. We suggest that the overemphasis in the distributive justice literature on the three principles of equity, equality, and need, ought to be tempered by finer distinctions among the varieties of each and increased attention to additional principles and combinations of principles. The chapter ends by outlining suggestions for future research. Four issues are featured: the nature of the object (social resource) that is distributed and the focus of justice judgments, how the way the resource was produced may affect its allocation and justice judgment, how justice relates to various types of conflict, and why people sometimes do not react to perceived injustices.

Towards an Integration of Distributive Justice, Procedural Justice, and Social Resource Theories2007In: Social Justice Research, ISSN 0885-7466, E-ISSN 1573-6725, Vol. 20, no 3, p. 312-335Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this paper is to formulate new and more precise predictions regarding behavioral reactions to distributive and procedural injustice via insights from resource theory. The three theories share focus on discrepancies between actual and ideal states of existence as well as on psychological and behavioral reactions to discrepancy. But they also differ from each other in their conceptualizations and theorizing about these matters. Equity theory conceptualizes discrepancy as a perceived mismatch between inputs and outcomes; multiprinciple distributive justice and procedural justice theories view discrepancy as a mismatch between expected and applied distribution and procedural rules, respectively. Resulting feelings of inequity/injustice may trigger attempts to restore justice. Within the framework of resource theory, discrepancy concerns an inappropriate match between the nature of the provided and received resources. This leads to frustration which, in turn, may trigger attempts at retaliation. Limitations of the theories are discussed, with particular focus on their inability to match specific discrepancies with appropriate behavioral reactions. Behavioral predictions are based upon established congruence between behavioral reactions and violated procedural rules as well as type of inequity, as determined via their respective resource isomorphism. Limitations of the present integration attempt are discussed.

Relationen mellan "identitetskärnan" och postmoderniteten: En kvalitativ undersökning om relationer, identitet och postmodernism2010Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Tillbaka till samhället: En undersökning av unga vuxna deltagare i verksamheten Catch Up2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the study was to find out whether the interaction between mentally disabled individuals and pet positively affects the individual and gives a feeling of well-being to the extent that this might be implicated in the psychologically disabled people’s everyday life in some form of rehabilitation measure. The study is qualitative and builds on an ethnographic design. Data collection was performed through six observations, six interviews and reflections. Interviews were also conducted with relatives and assistants for greater opportunity for follow-up questions, and descriptions of the situation. Theoretical perspective guiding this study is symbolic interactionism. Theoretical focus is on Asplund's theory of social responsivity and Asplund's explanations of the concrete person and abstract social being. This focus is complemented through Mead's theory on self-consciousness, Cooley’s theory of the looking-glass-self and Berg's description of  different expressions and forms of play. Previous research is linked to interaction with pets and the elderly, individuals with autism and other disabilities. The conclusion of the study show that positive feelings of well-being arise in the meeting through interaction with companion animals.
