    A Parallel Computing Software Architecture for the Bilevel Parameter Tuning of Optimization AlgorithmsManuscript (preprint) (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

    Most optimization algorithms extract important algorithmic design decisions as control parameters. This is necessary because different problems can require different search strategies to be solved effectively. The control parameters allow for the optimization algorithm to be adapted to the problem at hand. It is however difficult to predict what the optimal control parameters are for any given problem. Finding these optimal control parameter values is referred to as the parameter tuning problem. One approach of solving the parameter tuning problem is to use a bilevel optimization where the parameter tuning problem itself is formulated as an optimization problem involving algorithmic performance as the objective(s). In this paper, we present a framework and architecture that can be used to solve large-scale parameter tuning problems using a bilevel optimization approach. The proposed framework is used to show that evolutionary algorithms are competitive as tuners against irace which is a state-of-the-art tuning method. Two evolutionary algorithms, differential evaluation (DE) and a genetic algorithm (GA) are evaluated as tuner algorithms using the proposed framework and software architecture. The importance of replicating optimizations and avoiding local optima is also investigated. The architecture is deployed and tested by running millions of optimizations using a computing cluster. The results indicate that the evolutionary algorithms can consistently find better control parameter values than irace. The GA, however, needs to be configured for an explicit exploration and exploitation strategy in order avoid local optima.

    Abstract [en]

    Evolutionary optimization algorithms typically use one or more parameters that control their behavior. These parameters, which are often kept constant, can be tuned to improve the performance of the algorithm on specific problems.  However, past studies have indicated that the performance can be further improved by adapting the parameters during runtime. A limitation of these studies is that they only control, at most, a few parameters, thereby missing potentially beneficial interactions between them. Instead of finding a direct control mechanism, the novel approach in this paper is to use different parameter sets in different stages of an optimization. These multiple parameter sets, which remain static within each stage, are tuned through extensive bi-level optimization experiments that approximate the optimal adaptation of the parameters. The algorithmic performance obtained with tuned multiple parameter sets is compared against that obtained with a single parameter set.  For the experiments in this paper, the parameters of NSGAII are tuned when applied to the ZDT, DTLZ and WFG test problems. The results show that using multiple parameter sets can significantly increase the performance over a single parameter set.

    Abstract [sv]

    Detta arbete undersöker prestandakraven hos realtidsväxande procedurellt genererande träd baserade på L-systemet genom att jämföra dessa med identiska träd representerade i form av statisk mesh.

    Ett stokastiskt parametriskt kontextberoende L-system med hakparenteser har implementerats i en enkel testmiljö baserad på OpenGL, statisk mesh har implementerats i form av display list. Undersökningen har jämfört de två teknikerna baserat på renderingstid, minnesanvändning, och genereringstid av Lsystem, såväl som hur de båda teknikerna skalar med antal vertiser och L-systemslängd.

    Resultaten visar på att de L-systemsbaserade träden har längre renderingstid än de representerade med statisk mesh, utöver tid för att växa träden via L-systemet före var rendering. De L-systemsbaserade träden visade dock på lägre minnesanvändning än sin statiska motsvarighet. Resultaten visar även på att de tekniker som jämförts inte nödvändigtvis var optimalt implementerade, och arbetet avslutas med en diskussion om hur detta skulle kunna åtgärdas i framtida arbeten.

    Detta arbete fokuserar på att utveckla två webbapplikationer i ramverken Django och Node.js tillsammans med Express för att besvara frågan av vilket ramverk som erhåller bäst söktider utifrån en Q&A plattform som använder en PostgreSQL databas vars innehåll är delar av Stack Overflow datasetet. Ramverken jämförs med hjälp av metoden experiment på grund av fördelarna som det erbjuder. Resultatet blev att Node.js gav bättre söktider för ett mindre webbapplikationer medan Django presterade bättre för större webbapplikationer. Genom att halvera storleken av sökresultatens kroppstext till 150 tecken fick Node.js söktider som i snitt var bättre än Django vid större projekt. Antalet sökresultat har en inverkan där vardera ramverk har sina egna intervaller där de ger bäst söktider. Kortsiktigt kan arbetet fortsätta genom att utföra ytterligare mätningar för respektive faktor, långsiktigt kan dessa ramverk jämföras med andra för att se om dessa två ligger bland de bättre eller sämre för denna tillämpningen.

    Three-dimensional computer graphics enjoys a wide range of applications of which games and movies are only few examples. By incorporating three-dimensional computer graphics in to a simulator the simulator is able to provide the operator with visual feedback during a simulation. Simulators come in many different flavors where flight and radar simulators are two types in which three-dimensional rendering of large terrains constitutes a central component.

    Ericsson Microwave Systems (EMW) in Skövde is searching for an algorithm that (a) can handle terrain data that is larger than physical memory and (b) has an adjustable error metric that can be used to reduce terrain detail level if an increase in load on other critical parts of the system is observed. The aim of this paper is to identify and evaluate existing algorithms for terrain rendering in order to find those that meet EMW: s requirements. The objectives are to (i) perform a literature survey over existing algorithms, (ii) implement these algorithms and (iii) develop a test environment in which these algorithms can be evaluated form a performance perspective.

    The literature survey revealed that the algorithm developed by Lindstrom and Pascucci (2001) is the only algorithm of those examined that succeeded to fulfill the requirements without modifications or extra software. This algorithm uses memory-mapped files to be able to handle terrain data larger that physical memory and focuses on how terrain data should be laid out on disk in order to minimize the number of page faults. Testing of this algorithm on specified test architecture show that the error metric used could be adjusted to effectively control the terrains level of detail leading to a substantial increase in performance. The results also reveal the need for both view frustum culling as well a level of detail algorithm to achieve fast display rates of large terrains. Further the results also show the importance of how terrain data is laid out on disk especially when physical memory is limited.

    Bofors UwS (Underwater Systems) har påbörjat utvecklingen av ett nytt centraliserat system för att koordinera alla torpedhanterare ombord på ett fartyg till en central enhet. Detta system måste kunna ta emot och i vissa fall sända data till de övriga delsystemen ombord på fartyget. För att lyckas med detta behöver de en kommunikationsapplikation till denna centrala enhet. MONOLITH är en prototyp av en sådan applikation. Dess huvudändamål är att demonstrera hur detta kan utföras och att testa enheter som kan kontrollera ett antal torpeder. En sådan enhet kallas för en TIU vilket står för Torpedo Interface Unit.

    MONOLITH är för närvarande kapabel att kommunicera med ett godtyckligt antal TIU:er (förutsatt att TIU:erna använder sig av TCP/IP-kommunikation) samt ta emot navigationsdata från en GPS-mottagare (Global Positioning System). MONOLITH är även förberett för att implementera flera andra kommunikationsenheter, såsom sonarer, radar o.s.v.

    I grundskolan skiljer det sig mycket från elev till elev när det gäller konsten att behärska läsning. Då läsning är något som tränas genom övning är det oftast de som tycker det är svårt som håller sig borta från läsandet. DAISY är ett format som erbjuder läsare att, samtidigt som de läser en text, få den uppläst. Genom att presentera text både visuellt och auditivt kan fokus tas bort från själva ordavkodningen, vilket är det som de flesta i läs- och skrivsvårigheter har problem med. I detta arbete undersöktes läshastighet, läsförståelse och läseffektivitet på 18 åttondeklassare, varav sju uppvisade olika grader av läs- och skrivsvårigheter. Resultaten mellan när de läste en text med DAISY och när de läste en text utan DAISY jämfördes. Resultatet visade att deltagarna läste långsammare med DAISY än utan. De i läs- och skrivsvårigheter hade dock både en större läsförståelse och läseffektivitet när de använde DAISY.

    Abstract [en]

    Many maintenance policies have been proposed for refreshing a warehouse. The difficulties of selecting an appropriate maintenance policy for a specific scenario with specific source characteristics, user requirements etc. has triggered researcher to develop algorithms and cost-models for predicting cost associated with a policy and a scenario. In this dissertation, we develop a benchmarking tool for testing scenarios and retrieve real world data that can be compared against algorithms and cost-models. The approach was to support a broad set of configurations, including the support of source characteristics proposed in [ENG00], to be able to test a diversity set of scenarios.

    Abstract [en]

    There are a few storytelling methods for video games. The most common forms are linear and branching narratives, but there is one method not used to the same extent, known as emergent narrative. This study uses and artifact to explore emergent narrative using systems known as Drama Managers that aim to control the sequence of events in a game to create a narrative. The purpose of the study was to explore if a simplified drama manager could produce emergent narratives. The conclusion is that elements of emergence could be identified, but the artifact could not be considered to contain an emergent narrative. This knowledge could be used to help define the difference between emergent and branching narratives.

    Allt större och större andel företag väljer att presentera och förmedla varor och tjänster via e-handel. En viktig aspekt vid e-handel är att kunden känner förtroende för e-handelsapplikationen och företaget. Denna rapport redogör för vilken inverkan multimediala inslag har för förtroendet av en e-handelsapplikation, vid initialt användande. En undersökning har genomförts med hjälp av en kooperativ utvärdering av fyra e-handelsapplikationer vilka innehåller olika typer av multimediala inslag har.

    Resultatet av undersökningen visar att multimediala inslag inverkar positivt på förtroendet för e-handelsapplikationer. Däremot finns indikationer på att för hög grad av multimedialt inslag inverkar negativt på förtroendet för e-handelsapplikationer.

    Evolution och tillståndsmaskiner är kända koncept inom både AI-forskning och spelindustrin. Tillståndsmaskiner har länge använts för att simulera artificella motståndare, samtidigt som evolution i många fall applicerats för att få agenter att själva upptäcka bra lösningar på problem. Arbetet använder sig av evolution för att undersöka om det går att evolvera fram bättre tillståndsövergångar i en stokastisk tillståndsmaskin än hos en fördefinierad tillståndsmaskin. Två homogena lag med två agenter vardera skapas, vilka tävlar på en arena där det går ut på att döda det andra laget först. Det ena laget delar en ständigt evolverande beteendemall medan det andra laget består av fördefinierade agenter, på så sätt att de har bedömts som duktiga på att spela spelet. De evolverande lagets framgång mäts i hur mycket hälsa de har kvar när en match är över. Utvärderingen visar en klar förbättring från 3% till 25% vinstchans hos en agent som startar med helt slumpade övergångsvärden och sedan evolverar dessa i 230 generationer emot en godtyckligt vald fördefinierad agent.

    Background: One of the most growing areas of the Internet is E-commerce, which gave consumers a flexibility that was not previously available. The advantages of digital commerce are many, where both companies and consumers can use the technology's possibilities. However, a problem area in the E-commerce area is the number of products and the consumers' difficulties finding what is demanded. One of the techniques used to solve the problem is Artificial Intelligence.

    Within the artificial intelligence there is the sub-area Machine learning. The basis of the technology is to teach a computer to perform specific tasks better and better over time. To implement machine learning, artificial neural network used, which this study is based on.

    Problem statements: In this research, machine learning will be tested to see if the technology can be used to increase the conversion rate in E-commerce. The study will also be supplemented with knowledge about the opportunities and challenges that a future implementation could bring. The questions to be answered are:

    - How can product searches based on machine learning be used to increase the conversion rate in E-commerce?

    - What are the most common opportunities and challenges associated with machine learning in E-commerce?

    Purpose: The study's purpose is to make it easier for consumers when it comes to finding the right products and to increase the knowledge base of machine learning in E- commerce.

    Results: The study concluded that search engines based on Machine Learning can be used to increase the conversion rate. The opportunities that were found were improved business strategies, more personalized approaches and increased revenue. The challenges that were discovered were resource shortages, data quality and lack of project management.

    Elektronisk handel är på väg att bli allt vanligare. Detta examensarbete behandlar en av de två olika typerna av elektronisk handel, nämligen webhandeln. Den andra varianten är EDI. Webhandel är den elektroniska handel som bedrivs mellan företag och privatpersoner, till skillnad från EDI som är handel mellan företag.

    Det har blivit allt vanligare att företag kan erbjuda sina kunder att både beställa och betala via Internet. Det finns några olika sätt att betala för sina inköp, nämligen med betalkort, att vara medlem i ett shoppingtorg eller att använda digital valuta. Det kan dock vara riskfyllt att lämna ut sitt kontokortnummer på Internet, eftersom en skicklig och oärlig person skulle kunna avlyssna transaktionen och sedan använda kortnumret för egna inköp.

    Mitt examensarbete är ett försök att reda ut hur farligt det egentligen är att betala via Internet. De problemställningar som har utretts är:

    Vilka krav finns på säkerhet från de olika aktörerna på marknaden, dvs banker, webbutiker och kunder?

    Vilket av betalningssätten uppfyller säkerhetskraven i störst utsträckning?

    De slutsatser jag kommit fram till är:

    De krav på säkerhet som ställs från de inblandade är att betalningen skall vara säker mot avlyssning, webbutik och kund skall kunna identifiera varandra samt kunden vill känna förtroende för att ingen information om hans köp hamnar i orätta händer.

    Vad gäller säkerheten i de olika betalningssätten så anser jag att samtliga elektroniska betalningssätt uppfyller kraven, men att den allra säkraste metoden är SET - Secure Electronic Transactions.

    För att enbart kunna lagra ett tredimensionellt objekt i en databas krävs inte en väldigt optimerad databasdesign. Men beroende på användningsområdet av databasen kan det krävas stora optimeringar för just detta. I jämförelse med ett dataspel som har en framerate över 30 fps (uppdateringar per sekund) så är en databas väldigt långsam. Eftersom att databasen sett ur ett spels perspektiv tar lång tid på sig att svara när man frågar den något kommer detta att innebära stora problem när man försöker kombinera de två. Det finns dock saker man kan göra för att öka prestanda på en databas, exempelvis att optimera själva frågorna till databasen. Men framför allt kan man optimera själva databasdesignen. Självklart kan man utveckla spelet så att det inte nödvändigtvis behöver ha kontakt med databasen i varje uppdatering. Detta är något som denna rapport kommer att gå in på djupet med och då läggs större vikt på databassidan än på spelsidan.

    Databaser och databassystem är grunden för en stor del av de verksamheter som företag och organisationer sysslar med idag. Att utnyttja moderna databasteknologier kan medföra ett säkrare och smidigare system vilket i sin tur kan leda till konkurrens-fördelar för de som använder dem.

    I detta arbete undersöks i vilken omfattning ett antal olika moderna databasteknologier används inom företag och organisationer i Sverige och huruvida kostnaden är det största hindret för vidareutvecklingar av befintliga system.

    Inledningsvis beskrivs ett antal moderna databasteknologier för att ge en uppfattning om vilka möjligheter som finns på databasområdet. Därefter redovisas den under-sökning som gjorts med hjälp av telefonintervju som metod för att samla in material.

    Resultatet visar att vissa teknologier, som exempelvis databaser kopplade mot Internet, utnyttjas och i stor utsträckning kommer att användas i ännu högre grad i framtiden. Av undersökningen framkom ett flertal olika hinder för utveckling av databassystem där kostnaden endast är ett av dessa.

    När en webbhandelsapplikation ska utvecklas påverkas produktleverantörens kunder, eftersom de måste förändra sina beställningsrutiner. Anställda hos kunden kommer därmed att bli systemanvändare. Syftet med den här rapporten är att undersöka om detta förhållande påverkar systemutvecklingsprocessen. Först genomfördes en litteraturstudie, därefter intervjuades fem personer, vilka samtliga arbetar med att utveckla webbapplikationer åt produktleverantörer.

    För att ett datasystem ska erhålla hög acceptans krävs användarmedverkan och eftersom anställda hos kunden blir systemanvändare vid webbhandel, är det viktigt att de får delta i utvecklingsprocessen. När anställda hos kunden ska ingå i utvecklingsprocessen kommer tidsåtgången att öka, vilket medför att kostnaderna för webbhandelsapplikationen ökar. Tidsåtgången ökar, eftersom det kan vara svårt att identifiera potentiella kunder, samt att fler användare involveras, vilket leder till att fler synpunkter ska behandlas och därmed tar det längre tid än traditionell systemutveckling. Produktleverantören avgör vilka kunder som får delta i systemutvecklingsprocessen. Vanligtvis samlas synpunkter in från anställda hos kund, genom intervjuer, deltagande i konceptmodelleringar eller prototyputvärderingar.

    The aim of maritime surveillance systems is to detect threats earlyenough to take appropriate actions. We present the results ofa study on maritime domain awareness performed during the fallof 2008. We analyze an identified capability gap of worldwidesurveillance in the maritime domain, and report from a userworkshop addressing the identified gap. We describe a SMARTracIn conceptsystem that integrates information from surveillance systems with background knowledgeon normal conditions to help users detect and visualize anomaliesin vessel traffic. Land-based systems that cover the coastal watersas well as airborne, space-borne and ships covering open seaare considered. Sensor data are combined with intelligence information fromship reporting systems and databases. We describe how information fusion,anomaly detection and semantic technology can be used to helpusers achieve more detailed maritime domain awareness. Human operators area vital part of this system and should be activecomponents in the fusion process. We focus on the problemof detecting anomalous behavior in ocean-going traffic, and a roomand door segmentation concept to achieve this. This requires theability to identify vessels that enter into areas covered bysensors as well as the use of information management systemsthat allow us to quickly find all relevant information.

    Abstract [en]

    DeeDS combines active database functionality with critical timing constraints and integrated system monitoring. Since the reactive database mechanisms, or rule management system, must meet critical deadlines, we must employ methods that make triggering of rules and execution of actions predictable. We will focus on the scheduling issues associated with dynamic scheduling of workloads where the triggered transactions have hard, firm or soft deadlines, and how transient overloads may be resolved by substituting transactions by computationally cheaper ones. The rationale for a loosely coupled general purpose event monitoring facility, that works in tight connection with the scheduler, is presented. For performance and predictability, the scheduler and event monitor are executing on a separate CPU from the rest of the system. Real-time database accesses in DeeDS are made predictable and efficient by employing methods such as main memory resident data, full replication, eventual consistency, and prevention of global deadlocks.

A large number of industrial partners are supporting and participating in the development of the area.     Abstract [en]

    Society is getting more digitalized and more people are connecting to the Internet. This means that a lot of work that handles sensitive information is now done using computers. There is also a lot of services that requires personal information for registration and bank account information to order wares or subscribe to the service. This information is of interest to criminal who can use it to make money. Because of this the use of passwords has increased and to make sure that strong passwords are created guidelines are adhered to. The password guidelines are created and spread by authorities and expert organizations. However, there are no sources for where the guidelines came from or an explanation for how they were made.

    To shine a light on this, the study aims to explain the guidelines origins and what they were based on. This is a qualitative study where interviews were done with information security specialists from three governmental bodies and one expert organization. After the interviews were completed and data collected, they were analyzed using thematic analysis to identify the sources that were used during the creation of the guidelines. The study’s results show that the motivation for the guidelines vary. This can be observed through the differences in target group and focus. It also appears like there are no studies which could be referred to. Although there is a consistent pattern that the sources for the guidelines often seems to be based on the experiences and expertise of their employees. Except for this, inspiration is also drawn from organizations such as NIST.

    Abstract [en]

    This thesis aims at portraying interruptions in the socio-technical domain of manufacturing industry, from a distributed cognition perspective. The research problem addressed is the lack of naturalistic inquiry in prior interruption research. Further, manufacturing is a complex socio-technical domain where interruptions have not previously been studied. In this thesis, a workplace study is applied with distributed cognition as its theoretical framework. The results of the study identify two new types of interruptions, as well as one new dimension of interruptions. This result shows that interruptions are a multifaceted phenomenon that frequently occurs within manufacturing. An integration of the theoretical background and the empirical work resulted in five recommendations concerning how to reduce the amount of interruptions and how to minimize their disruptive effects. This study complements prior interruption research, emphasises the importance of studying interruptions in natural settings, and provides several insights regarding future interruption research.

    Affective touch has a fundamental role in human development, social bonding, and for providing emotional support in interpersonal relationships. We present, what is to our knowledge, the first HRI study of tactile conveyance of both positive and negative emotions (affective touch) on the Nao robot, and based on an experimental set-up from a study of human–human tactile communication. In the present work, participants conveyed eight emotions to a small humanoid robot via touch. We found that female participants conveyed emotions for a longer time, using more varied interaction and touching more regions on the robot’s body, compared to male participants. Several differences between emotions were found such that emotions could be classified by the valence of the emotion conveyed, by combining touch amount and duration. Overall, these results show high agreement with those reported for human–human affective tactile communication and could also have impact on the design and placement of tactile sensors on humanoid robots.

    This paper presents an empirical study that evaluates the effects of visualizing missing data on decision-making tasks. A comparison between three visualization techniques: (1) emptiness, (2) fuzziness, and (3) emptiness plus explanation, revealed that the latter technique induced significantly higher degree of decision-confidence than the visualization technique fuzziness. Moreover, emptiness plus explanation yield the highest number of risky choices of the three. This result suggests that uncertainty visualization techniques affect the decision-maker and the decisionconfidence. Additionally, the results indicate a possible relation between the degree of decision-confidence and the decision-maker's displayed risk behavior.

    I dagens affärsmiljöer är det kritiskt för organisationer att kunna ta del av sina affärsdata och använda denna för att fatta beslut och bli konkurrenskraftiga på arbetsmarknaden. Idag behöver människor i organisationer tillgång till data snabbare än någonsin vilket sätter en oerhört stor press på IT-avdelningen. Denna press gör att dem inte hinner med alla förfrågningar vilket leder till att dessa människor behöver få tillgång till och analysera data på egen hand för att fatta tidskritiska beslut. Denna miljö benämns self-service business intelligence (SSBI). Implementationen av SSBI visar sig vara svårare i praktiken än vad många organisationer räknar med då det finns många utmaningar. För att lyckas med SSBI är det kritiskt att organisationer lyckas hantera dessa utmaningar i praktiken. Denna studie besvarar frågan: ❖ Hur kan utmaningarna inom self-service BI hanteras i praktiken? Studien baseras på en litteraturanalys och en fallstudie med intervjuer för att undersöka hur erfarna människor i organisationer anser att dessa utmaningar kan hanteras i praktiken. Resultatet är en framtagen faktormodell som består av olika riktlinjer för hur respektive identifierad utmaning kan hanteras i praktiken.

    Abstract [en]

    Information classification deals with the handling of sensitive information, such as patient records and social security information. It is of utmost importance that this information is treated with caution in order to ensure its integrity and security. In Sweden, the Civil Contingencies Agency has established a set of guidelines for how governmental agencies should handle such information. However, there is a lack of research regarding how well these guidelines are followed as well as if the agencies have made accommodations of these guidelines of their own. This work presents the results from a survey sent to 245 governmental agencies in Sweden, investigating how information classification actually is performed today. The questionnaire was answered by 144 agencies and 54 agencies provided detailed documents of their classification process. The overall results show that the classification process is difficult, while those who provided documents proved to have good guidelines, but not always consistent with the existing recommendations.

    The complexity management of software code has become one of the major problems in software development industry. With growing complexity the maintenance effort of code increases. Moreover, various aspects of complexity create difficulties for complexity assessment. The objective of this paper is to investigate the relationships of various aspects of code complexity and propose a method for identifying the most complex functions. We have conducted an action research project in two software development companies and complemented it with a study of three open source products. Four complexity metrics are measured, and their nature and mutual influence are investigated. The results and possible explanations are discussed with software engineers in industry. The results show that there are two distinguishable aspects of complexity of source code functions: Internal and outbound complexities. Those have an inverse relationship. Moreover, the product of them does not seem to be greater than a certain limit, regardless of software size. We present a method that permits identification of most complex functions considering the two aspects of complexities. The evaluation shows that the use of the method is effective in industry: It enables identification of 0.5% most complex functions out of thousands of functions for reengineering.

    Unequivocally understandable requirements are vital for software design process. However, in practice it is hard to achieve the desired level of understandability, because in large software products a substantial amount of requirements tend to have ambiguous or complex descriptions. Over time such requirements decelerate the development speed and increase the risk of late design modifications, therefore finding and improving them is an urgent task for software designers. Manual reviewing is one way of addressing the problem, but it is effort-intensive and critically slow for large products. Another way is using measurement, in which case one needs to design effective measures. In recent years there have been great endeavors in creating and validating measures for requirements understandability: most of the measures focused on ambiguous patterns. While ambiguity is one property that has major effect on understandability, there is also another important property, complexity, which also has major effect on understandability, but is relatively less investigated. In this paper we define a complexity measure for textual requirements through an action research project in a large software development organization. We also present its evaluation results in three large companies. The evaluation shows that there is a significant correlation between the measurement values and the manual assessment values of practitioners. We recommend this measure to be used with earlier created ambiguity measures as means for automated identification of complex specifications.

    Sales & Operations Planning är den process som knyter ihop försäljningsplanen och produktionsplanen med affärsplanen. Detta sker löpande varje månad i aggregerad form. Den här typen av planering har rönt stor framgång i USA. Detta är i alla fall Richard C. Lings (1988) åsikt, men så var det också han som grundade Sales & Operations Planning.

    I mitt arbete kommer jag att visa vad Sales & Operations Planning är för något och hur det kan implementeras. Trots att det är ett populärt sätt att planera på i USA så har det inte nått samma framgång i Sverige. En av de viktigaste delarna i S&OP är familjeindelning. Jag kommer i mitt arbete visa hur Svenska företag delar in sina artiklar i familjer och hur litteraturen vill att det ska ske. Jag kommer även att ta upp fördelarna med simulering och hur Svenska företag planerar.

    Uncertainty is an endemic condition of the Baltic Sea herring (Clupea harengus membras, L) fishery management. It is a condition exacerbated by the fishing fleet overcapacity and consequent exploitation of the herring stock at a level believed to be unsustainable. Some sources of uncertainty are mainly related to biology and fishing technique: the unsolved problem of herring assessment and management units, the recruitment–environment relationship and the reduction in mean weights-at-age, uncertain ageing of fish, the problem of unaccounted fishing mortality caused by the fish selection through the trawl net. Fishing fleet overcapacity is believed to be behind of the regulatory overfishing when setting the Total Allowable Catches (TACs) higher than the scientific advice (decision overfishing) and tolerating the extensive underreporting of catches (implementation overfishing). Two scenarios for the Central Baltic Sea herring fishery management options are constructed and the Bayesian networks are used to represent and update uncertainties encountered in the process of the management related situation assessment. First scenario represents the current status of the fishery management resulting in fishing mortality (F) higher than FMSY – the fishing mortality that corresponds to the Maximum Sustainable Yield (MSY). The second scenario demonstrates the assumed potential impact of economic incentives (e.g.zoning, individual transferable quotas (ITQs), territorial use rights etc.) on the reduction of excessive fishing capacity and bringing actual fishing mortality closer to FMSY.

    The context of fisheries management, according to recent studies, tends to be complex, uncertain and controversial and it cannot be adequately addressed based on work done within the “linear” science-policy interface (SPI). It is believed that moving towards a more participatory and “collaborative” SPI model would favour implementation of more efficient economic incentives to reduce the fishing fleet capacity and bring the actual fishing mortality closer to the levels considered to be sustainable. Focusing the participatory research basically on fish biology and fish stock assessment seems to be too narrow while, on the other hand, it does not embrace many other important issues of contemporary fisheries management. It is suggested that further involvement of stakeholders into the full-scale bio-economic modelling based participatory research would contribute to better understanding of the dynamics of human natural interface concerned and, consequently, would improve the consensus between different interests.

    Berättande för Virtual Reality undersöker hur okonventionellt berättande kan påverka en spelares upplevda förhållande till en non-player character i vad som annars är en minimalistisk Virtual Reality-simulation.

    Studien innefattar en kvalitativ undersökning som utfördes på åtta testpersoner som alla fick spela igenom tre sociala scenarier i Virtual Reality och sedan intervjuas för att utvinna data till undersökningen. För att stödja undersökningens upplägg baserades arbetet på en bred bakgrund relaterad till bland annat berättartekniker och Virtual Reality-utveckling.

    Resultaten av undersökningen uppmärksammar potentialen som Virtual Reality har för att stärka den emotionella kopplingen mellan en spelare och en non-player character.

    Det lägger också en grund för vidare experimentering inom berättande i mediet i framtiden.

    Abstract [en]

    There is a high demand for program developers, but the dropouts from computer science courses are also high and course enrolments keep decreasing. In order to overcome that situation, several studies have found serious games as good tools for education in programming learning. As an outcome from such research, several game solutions for programming learning have appeared, each of them using a different approach. Some of these games are only used in the research field where others are published in commercial stores. The problem with commercial games is that they do not offer a clear map of the different programming concepts. This dissertation addresses this problem and analyses which fundamental programming concepts that are represented in commercial games for programming learning. The study also identifies game design patterns used to represent these concepts.

    The result of this study shows topics that are represented more commonly in commercial games and what game design patterns are used for that. This thesis identifies a set of game design patterns in the 20 commercial games that were analysed. A description as well as some examples of the games where it is found is included for each of these patterns.

    As a conclusion, this research shows that from the list of the determined fundamental programming topics only a few of them are greatly represented in commercial games where the others have nearly no representation. This shows potential spots for future research in games for programming teaching.

    Abstract [en]

    Consumption of antioxidant supplements is widely popular worldwide mainly because of their supposed anticancer benefits. Though these benefits against cancer are highly advertised by supplement industry and a well stablished perception in general population, there are not enough studies to support those claims. In fact, several studies have pinpointed antioxidants’ role in promoting tumor proliferation and migration in multiple types of cancer. Nevertheless, the mechanisms behind how antioxidants are actually mediating these events is largely unknown. This study aims to investigate how antioxidants are affecting lung cancer cells migration and to decipher the involvement of the transcription factor BACH1 in it. In this study, effect of antioxidant supplementation on three human Non-small-cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC) cell lines were investigated. Antioxidant administration was found to increase cell migration and BACH1 expression in all of them. Effect of inactivation and over activation of BACH1 confirmed significant relation between antioxidant induced migration and BACH1 expression. Along with increased migration, antioxidants increased glycolysis in the cells in a Bach1 dependent manner. Activation of NRF2, the master regulator of endogenous antioxidant expression had also been found to increase migration through up regulation of BACH1. Overall findings of this study confirm Bach1’s role in antioxidant-induced migration in lung cancer from different directions and provides a broader understanding how redox status of cancer cells influence their metastatic ability.

    Abstract [en]

    The state of queer representation in games is poor, and queer consumers are growing increasingly vocal in their demands for nuanced portrayals. This thesis investigates how queer players perceive the tropes and stereotypes commonly used to portray them in games. By sorting through existing representation and using the most common tropes found, this study created two example characters which were represented both narratively and visually. These characters were then the subject of a study of 29 participants. The comments and opinions of these 29 participants were then analysed to find a largely negative consensus which is chiefly concerned with making portrayals less tragic. From this, this study proceeds to analyse the desires of queer consumers and contextualize them in relation to a world which still actively oppresses them.

    Microaggregation is an anonymization technique consistingon partitioning the data into clusters no smaller thankelements andthen replacing the whole cluster by its prototypical representant. Mostof microaggregation techniques work on numerical attributes. However,many data sets are described by heterogeneous types of data, i.e., nu-merical and categorical attributes. In this paper we propose a new mi-croaggregation method for achieving a compliantk-anonymous maskedfile for categorical microdata based on generalization. The goal is to builda generalized description satisfied by at leastkdomain objects and toreplace these domain objects by the description. The way to constructthat generalization is similar that the one used in growing decision trees.Records that cannot be generalized satisfactorily are discarded, thereforesome information is lost. In the experiments we performed we prove thatthe new approach gives good results.

    Abstract [en]

    Generalization and Suppression are two of the most used techniques to achieve k-anonymity. However, the generalization concept is also used in machine learning to obtain domain models useful for the classification task, and the suppression is the way to achieve such generalization. In this paper we want to address the anonymization of data preserving the classification task. What we propose is to use machine learning methods to obtain partial domain theories formed by partial descriptions of classes. Differently than in machine learning, we impose that such descriptions be as specific as possible, i.e., formed by the maximum number of attributes. This is achieved by suppressing some values of some records. In our method, we suppress only a particular value of an attribute in only a subset of records, that is, we use local suppression. This avoids one of the problems of global suppression that is the loss of more information than necessary.

    Organisms relevant for nature conservation dont follow administrative borders. Because of this there is a need for a landscape perspective within conservation and planning, and a need for the species of interest to have legal protection. Network analysis adapted for ecological purposes has grown to become a powerful tool for studying and communicating the relationships between species dispersion and access to habitat. In this study the following question is posed: How is the Osmoderma eremita and the Pernis apivorus dispersal possibilities in the small scale cultivated landscape of Borås affected by exploitation in respect to a) dispersal ability, b) habitat quality, c) position of habitat patches in a network? The analysis were based on municipal and regional nature conservation data, which in due to confidentiality is not accounted for in the report by maps, coordinates, etc. Several networks were established for both species to indicate how habitat patches are distributed today and how the species dispersal changes depending on which patches are excluded – this was done to imitate how exploitation can affect the species future survival and dispersion. The results showed that the O.e. is mainly inhibited by its poor dispersal abilities, followed by patch position, while the P.a. is the most affected by degrading habitat quality. The most important conclusions of the study were that the O.e. natural dispersal may be restricted but can be improved by linking small network components together and by maintaining the largest components. As for the P.a. it was concluded that a different type of analysis, focusing on its behaviour and need for different patches for different purposes, would generate more interesting results.

    I lagbaserade, tävlingsinriktade dataspel är det viktigt att det är tydligt vem som är medspelare och vem som är motspelare, och jag har undersökt olika verktyg som en koncepttecknare kan använda för att uppnå detta i sin karaktärsdesign. Höga krav på realism begränsar dock hur dessa verktyg kan användas, och det är detta motsatsförhållande mellan krav på realism och krav på tydlighet som jag har undersökt i detta arbete. Jag har också försökt omsätta detta i praktiken genom att rita 46 karaktärskoncept till ett spelkoncept, med målet att det tydligt skall framgå vilka karaktärer som hör ihop och vilka som är varandras motståndare. Jag har kommit fram till att höga krav på realism avsevärt försvårar och begränsar hur tydlig en karaktär kan göras, och min slutsats är att spelkonceptet skulle tjäna i tydlighet om kraven på realism skulle lättas.

    Abstract [en]

    This dissertation evaluates evolutionary methods for evolving cooperative teams of robots. Cooperative robotics is a challenging research area in the field of artificial intelligence. Individual and autonomous robots may by cooperation enhance their performance compared to what they can achieve separately. The challenge of cooperative robotics is that performance relies on interactions between robots. The interactions are not always fully understood, which makes the designing process of hardware and software systems complex. Robotic soccer, such as the RoboCup competitions, offers an unpredictable dynamical environment for competing robot teams that encourages research of these complexities. Instead of trying to solve these problems by designing and implement the behavior, the robots can learn how to behave by evolutionary methods. For this reason, this dissertation evaluates evolution of neural controllers for a team of two robots in a competitive soccer environment. The idea is that evolutionary methods may be a solution to the complexities of creating cooperative robots. The methods used in the experiments are influenced by research of evolutionary algorithms with single autonomous robots and on robotic soccer. The results show that robot teams can evolve to a form of cooperative behavior with simple reactive behavior by relying on self-adaptation with little supervision and human interference.

    In recent years, the ERP system has been a key factor in successful information management and served as a foundation for many corporate organizations. Implementing a new business system is a complex process, which leads organizations having difficulties implementing the process. Implementation of business systems involves combining previously separated systems focusing on providing a more complete information resource for an organization. ERP systems accelerated during the millennium shift y2k, and many companies at the time had difficulties to implement the systems with a positive end result. Eighteen years later, the problem remains, despite the fact that ERP systems have evolved and businesses become more knowledgeable in the field. This shows a study from Panorama Consulting (2017) where it was found that 26 percent of companies failed with implementation. 74 percent exceed budget and 59 percent passed the intended schedule. To find a solution to the problem, most researchers have conducted studies focusing on identifying the negative contributing factors in ERP implementation. These factors are called "Critical failure factors". There is currently a lack of empirical research where information has been gathered from ERP providers. The research found is based on old theories for which factors contribute positively and negatively to an implementation process. These theories are being used by most researchers in their studies regarding the implementation of the ERP system. This study therefore focuses on ERP suppliers' perspectives on negative contributing factors in implementing ERP systems. Major emphasis has been placed on collecting factors from ERP providers in order that at a later stage in the study they can address the factors mentioned in previous studies to find relationships and possible deviations. The study used interviews as data collection method and five interviews have been conducted with experienced ERP providers. The result of the collected material from ERP providers identifies a number of critical factors that can be linked to factors from previous studies. Interestingly, the study also identified a number of factors that differ from previous studies. The conclusions that can be deduced from the study are that the implementation processes can be improved and become significantly more efficient with the help of the new insight into the problems that the ERP providers lifts up. Awareness of these negative contributing factors in implementing an ERP system contributes knowledge in the field of implementation processes, which in turn can be used by companies and individuals to facilitate and prevent the problems that may arise in such a process.

    Abstract [en]

    The GW approximation takes into account electrostatic self-interaction contained in the Hartree potential through the exchange potential. However, it has been known for a long time that the approximation contains self-screening error, as is evident in the case of the hydrogen atom. When applied to the hydrogen atom, the GW approximation does not yield the exact result for the electron removal spectra because of the presence of self-screening: the hole left behind is erroneously screened by the only electron in the system that is no longer present. We present a scheme to take into account self-screening and show that the removal of self-screening is equivalent to including exchange diagrams, as far as self-screening is concerned. The scheme is tested on a model hydrogen dimer and it is shown that the scheme yields the exact result to second order in (Uο-Uι)/2t, where Uο andare, respectively, the on-site and off-site Hubbard interaction parameters and t is the hopping parameter.
