Penningtvätt - en studie om varför revisorer anmäler få fall av penningtvätt2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Primärdata samlades in genom semistrukturerade intervjuer.

    Abstract [sv]

Software Configuration Management: A comparison of Chef, CFEngine and Puppet2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Configuring services in an ad-hoc way is less than optimal as human error can result in services that fail. Even though scripting offers a solution it does not allow for a uniform deployment of configurations. A possible solution to this problem is the use of software configuration management systems (SCMS) that allow administrators to specify what should be done, and not necessarily how. An implementation is conducted that focuses on the first part of implementing an SCMS to see if a transition to a SCMS governed environment can be worthwhile. Three SCMS will be investigated; Chef, CFEngine and Puppet. The results show that administrators can receive good support from the documentation as documentation of the three SCMS are mostly accurate. The support from the community is affected by region and activity is declining in some cases. Overall it is easy to install an SCMS and special purpose languages are effective for specifying functionality of services.

DATASPEL UTAN VISUELLA MEDEL: Hur skapar man ett skräckspel utan visuella medel?2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

A comparative study of social bot classification techniques2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

With social media rising in popularity over the recent years, new so called social bots are infiltrating by spamming and manipulating people all over the world. Many different methods have been presented to solve this problem with varying success. This study aims to compare some of these methods, on a dataset of Twitter account metadata, to provide helpful information to companies when deciding how to solve this problem. Two machine learning algorithms and a human survey will be compared on the ability to classify accounts. The algorithms used are the supervised algorithm random forest and the unsupervised algorithm k-means. There will also be an evaluation of two ways to run these algorithms, using the machine learning as a service BigML and the python library Scikit-learn. Additionally, what metadata features are most valuable in the supervised and human survey will be compared. Results show that supervised machine learning is the superior technique for social bot identification with an accuracy of almost 99%. To conclude, it depends on the expertise of the company and if a relevant training dataset is available but in most cases supervised machine learning is recommended.

Analytisk lyssning: Hur påverkar bilder vad vi hör och kan vi träna vår hörsel?2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

AUDIO-NAVIGATION: What are the benefits of utilising diegetic spatial audio in audio-navigation software?2012Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The task of navigating and orienting oneself in an unknown environment might seem arbitrary to most people. For a person with a visual impairment however, it can prove to be a challenge. Much research has been conducted to provide useful software solutions to aid this problem. Nevertheless, not enough research has been put into studying the use of our everyday sounds for such software. The present thesis is aimed at evaluating the usefulness of utilising diegetic spatial audio. After a real environment was replicated in a virtual audio environment without visual input, 16 sound students from the University of Skövde were asked to perform the same set of tasks in the virtual and the real environment. The results indicated that diegetic spatial audio is an important part of navigating without vision and that the experiment would be interesting to perform on a larger scale with visually impaired participants.

Inclusive game design: audio interface in a graphical adventure game2014In: 9th Audio Mostly: A Conference on Interaction With Sound (AM '14). ACM, New York, NY, USA, New York, USA: ACM Digital Library, 2014, p. 8-Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

A lot of video games on the market are inaccessible to players with visual impairments because they rely heavily on use of graphical elements. This paper presents a project aimed at developing a point-and-click adventure game for smart phones and tablets that is equally functional and enjoyable by blind and sighted players. This will be achieved by utilizing audio to give blind players all necessary information and enjoyment without graphics. In addition to creating the game, the aim of the project is to identify design aspects that can be applied to more types of games to include more players. This paper also presents a pilot study that has been conducted on an early version of the game and the preliminary findings are discussed.

A Possible Mechanism behind Autoimmune Disorders Discovered By Genome-Wide Linkage and Association Analysis in Celiac Disease2013In: PLoS ONE, ISSN 1932-6203, E-ISSN 1932-6203, Vol. 8, no 8, article id e70174Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Celiac disease is a common autoimmune disorder characterized by an intestinal inflammation triggered by gluten, a storage protein found in wheat, rye and barley. Similar to other autoimmune diseases such as type 1 diabetes, psoriasis and rheumatoid arthritis, celiac disease is the result of an immune response to self-antigens leading to tissue destruction and production of autoantibodies. Common diseases like celiac disease have a complex pattern of inheritance with inputs from both environmental as well as additive and non-additive genetic factors. In the past few years, Genome Wide Association Studies (GWAS) have been successful in finding genetic risk variants behind many common diseases and traits. To complement and add to the previous findings, we performed a GWAS including 206 trios from 97 nuclear Swedish and Norwegian families affected with celiac disease. By stratifying for HLA-DQ, we identified a new genome-wide significant risk locus covering the DUSP10 gene. To further investigate the associations from the GWAS we performed pathway analyses and two-locus interaction analyses. These analyses showed an over-representation of genes involved in type 2 diabetes and identified a set of candidate mechanisms and genes of which some were selected for mRNA expression analysis using small intestinal biopsies from 98 patients. Several genes were expressed differently in the small intestinal mucosa from patients with celiac autoimmunity compared to intestinal mucosa from control patients. From top-scoring regions we identified susceptibility genes in several categories: 1) polarity and epithelial cell functionality; 2) intestinal smooth muscle; 3) growth and energy homeostasis, including proline and glutamine metabolism; and finally 4) innate and adaptive immune system. These genes and pathways, including specific functions of DUSP10, together reveal a new potential biological mechanism that could influence the genesis of celiac disease, and possibly also other chronic disorders with an inflammatory component.

Providing Adaptability in Survivable Systems through Situation Awareness2006Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 25 credits / 37,5 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

System integration, interoperability, just in time delivery, window of opportunity, and dust-to-dust optimization are all keywords of our computerized future. Survivability is an important concept that together with dependability and quality of service are key issues in the systems of the future, i.e. infrastructural systems, business applications, and everyday desktop applications. The importance of dependable systems and the widely spread usage of dependable system together with the complexity of those systems makes middleware and frameworks for survivability imperative to the system builder of the future. This thesis presents a simulation approach to investigate the effect on data survival when the defending system uses knowledge of the current situation to protect the data. The results show the importance of situation awareness to avoid wasting recourses. A number of characteristics of the situational information provided and how this information may be used to optimize the system.

Komponentavskrivning inom kommunal redovisning: Nytt explicit krav från och med år 20142014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Background: Several accounting scandals have caused a development from rules-based to principles-based regulation. Swedish municipalities follow the principle-based recommendations issued by RKR (The Council for Municipal Accounting). An explicit requirement of component depreciation has been introduced prior to 2014. The principles-based regulatory framework raises some choices regarding the introduction and demands that professional judgments are made. There is some risk that comparability decreases. This risk could be reduced by being inspired by and do similarly to what the previous actors have done. Questions: How do municipalities introduce component depreciation based on the principles-based regulatory framework? What underlying factors affecting the choice and what are the effects of the transition to component depreciation?

Purpose: This study aims to create an understanding of how various municipalities’ behavior is influenced by the limited guidance that principle-based system gives when component depreciation is being introduced. It also seeks to explain the effects of the transition.

Method: The study is based on a qualitative approach in which five in-depth interviews were conducted with five different municipalities. The respondents were selected through a targeted selection depending on how far they have come in the change process.

Results and conclusion: The study shows that municipalities primarily choose to use component depreciation for new investments, how the old fixed assets should be handled is somewhat unclear. Furthermore, municipalities tend largely to be inspired by and collaborate with each other. Cooperation takes place but in different ways depending on whether it is a large or small community. Small municipalities often collaborate with each other and are inspired by the larger municipalities, while the larger municipalities cooperate with each other and are inspired by the private sector. Component depreciation gives rise to a need for increased internal cooperation between the various municipal departments

Specific Copy Number Alterations Associated with Docetaxel/Carboplatin Response in Ovarian Carcinomas2010In: Anticancer Research, ISSN 0250-7005, E-ISSN 1791-7530, Vol. 30, no 11, p. 4451-4458Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Background: The continued high recurrence and mortality rate in ovarian cancer is a significant problem and the major obstacle in the treatment of ovarian cancer patients is chemotherapy resistance. Thus, finding predictive markers of chemoresistance and elucidating resistance mechanisms is crucial for individualising treatment and improving survival of ovarian cancer patients. Materials and Methods: Using array comparative genomic hybridisation (CGH), this pilot study analysed the tumour genomes of patients treated with docetaxel/carboplatin as first-line chemotherapy (6 resistant versus 24 sensitive cases). This is the first array CGH study of  such  material.  Results:  The  study  identified  genetic alterations specific to chemoresistant (gains in 9p13.2-13.1, 9q21.2-21.32,  9q21.33,  9q22.2-22.31,  9q22.32-22.33  and 9q33.1-34.11) and chemosensitive (losses in 8p23.3-23.1 and 8p22) disease. Additionally, when comparing the results to previously analysed tumour material from patients treated with paclitaxel/carboplatin, the two datasets identified different genetic  alteration  profiles.  Conclusion:  Specific  genetic alterations were identified and associated with chemotherapy response in ovarian cancer. It will be interesting to investigate these exciting data further in larger independent series of ovarian   tumours,   and   hopefully   will   contribute   to   the establishment of predictive markers.

Potential predictive markers of chemotherapy resistance ovarian serous carcinomas2009In: BMC Cancer, ISSN 1471-2407, E-ISSN 1471-2407, Vol. 9, p. 368-Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Background Chemotherapy resistance remains a major obstacle in the treatment of women with ovarian cancer. Establishing predictive markers of chemoresponse would help to individualize therapy and improve survival of ovarian cancer patients. Chemotherapy resistance in ovarian cancer has been studied thoroughly and several non-overlapping single genes, gene profiles and copy number alterations have been suggested as potential markers. The objective of this study was to explore genetic alterations behind chemotherapy resistance in ovarian cancer with the ultimate aim to find potential predictive markers.

Methods To create the best opportunities for identifying genetic alterations of importance for resistance, we selected a homogenous tumor material concerning histology, stage and chemotherapy. Using high-resolution whole genome array comparative genomic hybridization (CGH), we analyzed the tumor genomes of 40 fresh-frozen stage III ovarian serous carcinomas, all uniformly treated with combination therapy paclitaxel/carboplatin. Fisher's exact test was used to identify significant differences. Subsequently, we examined four genes in the significant regions (EVI1, MDS1, SH3GL2, SH3KBP1) plus the ABCB1 gene with quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (QPCR) to evaluate the impact of DNA alterations on the transcriptional level.

Results We identified gain in 3q26.2, and losses in 6q11.2-12, 9p22.3, 9p22.2-22.1, 9p22.1-21.3, Xp22.2-22.12, Xp22.11-11.3, and Xp11.23-11.1 to be significantly associated with chemotherapy resistance. In the gene expression analysis, EVI1 expression differed between samples with gain versus without gain, exhibiting higher expression in the gain group.

Conclusion In conclusion, we detected specific genetic alterations associated with resistance, of which some might be potential predictive markers of chemotherapy resistance in advanced ovarian serous carcinomas. Thus, further studies are required to validate these findings in an independent ovarian tumor series.

Characterisation and application of antibodies specific for the long platelet-derived growth factor A and B chains2004In: International Journal of Biochemistry and Cell Biology, ISSN 1357-2725, E-ISSN 1878-5875, Vol. 36, no 11, p. 2226-2241Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) family comprises important mitogens for mesenchymal cells. The active dimeric form of PDGF consists of four structurally related A, B, C, and D chains. All PDGF-variants bind to PDGF-receptors. The A and B chains occur with and without basic C-terminal amino acid extensions as long (A(L) and B(L)) and short (A(S) and B(S)) isoforms. PDGF-A and -B form homo- or heterodimers. The biological relevance of short and long isoforms is unknown, although it may relate to different affinities for glycosaminoglycans of the cell glycocalix and intercellular matrix. Commercially available anti-PDGF-A and anti-PDGF-B antibodies cannot discriminate between the short and the long isoforms. Thus, to investigate the function of the long and short isoforms, we raised antibodies specific for the long A and B chain isoforms. The antibodies were affinity-purified and their properties analysed by surface plasmon resonance. Inhibition studies with different PDGF homodimers and dot-blot studies proved their high specificity for the respective isoforms. Both antibodies recognised the target PDGF homodimers complexed to the glycocalix of human arterial smooth muscle cells and human monocyte-derived macrophages. By using these specific antibodies, we were able to confirm at the protein level the synthesis of PDGF-A and -B during differentiation of human monocyte-derived macrophages and to demonstrate the presence of the PDGF-A(L) and PDGF-B(L) isoforms in human arterial tissue.

Aim: To describe Swedish nursing students' perceptions of caring for dying people after the first year of a three year in a nursing programme at three university nursing schools in Sweden. Methods: Interviews (n = 17) were undertaken with nursing students at the end of their first year. A phenomenographic approach was used to design and structure the analysis of the nursing students' perceptions. Results: The analysis resulted in five categories: 1) from abstract to reality, 2) from scary to natural, 3) increased knowledge can give bad conscience, 4) time limits versus fear of end-of-life conversations, and 5) meeting with relatives. Conclusion: Nursing students need to be prepared both theoretically and within practice to encounter death and dying and to care for dying persons. By combining their theoretical knowledge of dying and death with their own encounters of death and dying people in practice, the students can be supported to develop an understanding of dying and death as a natural part of life rather than something frightening.

Etiskt Spelande i Tabletop-RPGs: En undersökning av rollen moralisk val spelar inom RPG2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Examining Sound Design's Effect On A Player's Wayfinding By Utilizing Musical Intervals2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

As games get more complex, they can easily become overwhelming and difficult to navigate in. A way to make navigation and wayfinding in games easier is to add visual aids that help the player find the way, to progress to the next objective of the game. However, visual aids, such as arrows, or highlighted objects, can be distracting and break immersion. In this paper, the topic is how sound can be used to aid and guide a player in a game. More specifically, how using certain musically consonant or dissonant intervals can guide the player. A game prototype was created to examine how the use of musical intervals of varying degrees of consonance and dissonance would affect the participant’s choice of path. The results are analysed, and discussions are made on the results, what the conclusions made can be used for, and on future research in the area.

Mötet mellan psykiskt funktionshindrad individ och sällskapsdjur: En etnografisk studie om interaktionens betydelse för känsla av välbefinnande.2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 15 credits / 22,5 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the study was to find out whether the interaction between mentally disabled individuals and pet positively affects the individual and gives a feeling of well-being to the extent that this might be implicated in the psychologically disabled people’s everyday life in some form of rehabilitation measure. The study is qualitative and builds on an ethnographic design. Data collection was performed through six observations, six interviews and reflections. Interviews were also conducted with relatives and assistants for greater opportunity for follow-up questions, and descriptions of the situation. Theoretical perspective guiding this study is symbolic interactionism. Theoretical focus is on Asplund's theory of social responsivity and Asplund's explanations of the concrete person and abstract social being. This focus is complemented through Mead's theory on self-consciousness, Cooley’s theory of the looking-glass-self and Berg's description of  different expressions and forms of play. Previous research is linked to interaction with pets and the elderly, individuals with autism and other disabilities. The conclusion of the study show that positive feelings of well-being arise in the meeting through interaction with companion animals. Relatives and assistants experience the activity to be of importance in the mentally disabled’s everyday life. The study also shows incomprehension in bringing this to decision-makers and others to possibly enhance the mentally disabled people everyday life with animal-assisted rehabilitation measures.

Dynamics, Information System and Maintenance: drivers for change at the level of the individual1999Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

A lot of factors inside and outside the organisation forces the organisation and the indiviudals working in the organisation to change. The aim of this work is to get an understanding of the relationship between change, maintenance and information. To reach that aim the objectives are to examine what kind of external and internal factors there are that causes change in user demands and to see how these new demands can be handled inside the organisation. It becomes harder and harder to adapt to changes due to the fast acceleration of change, therefore it is important to become aware of what kind of factors result in new user demands and needs. Nine change factors on the organisational level were identified based on a literature study. An analysis of the differences between the organisation and the indiviudal (organism) level established a gorund for identifying factors on the level of the individual.

Upphandling av standardsystem: en företagsstudie1998Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

I rapporten beskrivs 6 olika upphandlingssituationer.

Rapporten tar därutöver även upp standardsystem i allmänhet.

    Abstract [sv]

Clustering Genes by Using Different Types of Genomic Data and Self-Organizing Maps2008Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of the project was to identify biologically relevant novel gene clusters by using combined genomic data instead of using only gene expression data in isolation. The clustering algorithm based on self-organizing maps (Kasturi et al., 2005) was extended and implemented in order to use gene location data together with the gene expression and the motif occurrence data for gene clustering. A distance function was defined to be used with gene location data. The algorithm was also extended in order to use vector angle distance for gene expression data. Arabidopsis thaliana is chosen as a data source to evaluate the developed algorithm. A test data set was created by using 100 Arabidopsis genes that have gene expression data with seven different time points during cold stress condition, motif occurrence data which indicates the occurrence frequency of 614 different motifs and the chromosomal location data of each gene. Gene Ontology (http://www.geneontology.org) and TAIR (http://arabidopsis.org) databases were used to find the molecular function and biological process information of each gene in order to examine the biological accuracy of newly discovered clusters after using combined genomic data. The biological evaluation of the results showed that using combined genomic data to cluster genes resulted in new biologically relevant clusters.

    Abstract [en]

Sound design with the help of procedurally generated sound in video games has seen arise in the last few years given how that method gives us greated freedom in how soundreacts in realtime to the games, and the players. This research looks into if there is anydifference in how procedural sound, in this case procedurally generated wind, affectsthe navigation of players in a three dimensional world, as opposed to static samplebased sound design.

    Chimera Cadence2018Artistic output (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The Gothic concept originates from comments I often get when I play live, “You should write music for horror movies!”  Intrigued by the idea I composed this suite of music that is inspired by the moods of Gothic horror fiction, art and architecture. Imagery of crumbling medieval castles ornamented with bizarre chimeras.  In dimly lit chambers and dungeons, themes of the supernatural, horror, decadence and madness unfold.Inspired by Charles Baudelaire, William Blake, de Sade, Edgar Allan Poe, Goya, Clark Ashton Smith etc.

Double Helix Staircase: For 8-channel Surround2014Artistic output (Refereed)
    Abstract [sv]

Double Helix Staircase komponerades 2014 av Lars Bröndum. Kompositionen har uppförts på följande konserter:

    - 16/11, 2014 (uruppförande) på ”Ljudbio 8-kanal konsert” i Uppsala.Kulturföreningen NEO

    - 21/6, 2015, New York City Elektroacoustic Festival (NYCEMF), New York City, USA

    - 23/4, 2016, VEMS kulturnatt konsert, Fylkingen, Stockholm.

Twittering Machine #3: Redux - the doomsday machine2018Artistic output (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Twittering Machine #3 is the third composition Lars Bröndum has composed which is inspired by Paul Klee’s painting Die Zwitscher-Maschine (Twittering Machine). The composition was completed in 2017 and was rearranged in 2018 for a slightly smaller orchestra (thus the added title “redux”). The piece was chosen in a call for works by a committee of representatives from Jönköping Sinfonia in conjunction with Kungliga Musikaliska Akademien (Swedish Royal Accademy) och Svensk Musik for a performance by the Jönköping Sinfonietta 27 April, 2018.

Bröndum has written three compositions based on the Klee painting Die Zwitscher-Maschine. The three “Machines” are varied in some aspects, such as, harmony, melodies and instrumentation but are very similar in form.  It is as if the machine is cranked up and sounding slightly different several years apart. Conceptually the sound may vary slightly because the mechanics has deteriorated or maybe have been repaired or because of mechanical errors. In the third twittering machine Bröndum was imagining a giant doomsday bird machine being cranked up creating a cacophony of sound.  The first two twittering machines are free in tempo at sections, but the third twittering machine is strict in tempo like a military machine.

Twittering Machine #3 is subtitled “Doomsday Machine” and is dedicated to Alfred Hitchcock as a reference to his classic movie Birds (1963).  The composition is similar to the movie - a menacing and foreboding piece. There is also a subtle reference to Donald Trump’s uncontrolled Tweets that very likely could cause the doomsday. It is scored for Flute, Oboe, English Horn, Clarinet in Bb, Bass Clarinet, Contrabassoon, Horn in F 1, Horn in F 2, Trumpet in C 1, Trumpet in C 2, Trombone 1, Tuba, Piano, violin I, Violin II, Viola, Cello, Contrabass.

Musical influences and inspiration for this work can be found in Oliver Messiaen’s bird calls found in pieces like Chronochromie (1960) for orchestra and György Ligeti’s cluster techniques in works such as Athmospheres (1961) and Chamber Concerto Music for 13 Instruments (1969/70). I also use indeterminate ideas pioneered by John Cage and Pierre Boulez.
