Kärleken som förlorade: En kvalitativ socialpsykologisk studie om avslutade kärleksrelationer2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Every individual have a basic proximity need that can only be fulfilled through long lasting relationships, despite this proximity need it is very common with dissolutions of relationships in today’s society. It has also been proven that cohabiting couples in Sweden separate to a large extent. Present study applies a qualitative, phenomenological approach with the purpose to create an understanding of what experiences individuals who have ended a cohabiting relationship have about how the social exchanges between the partners was expressed and affected the relationship. With social exchange theory, social resource theory and equity theory as theoretical framework, ten respondents who have separated from a cohabiting relationship were interviewed. The results show that the respondents were, in the aspects of time, perceived to be out of priority and that the time spent together was found to be without quality. In the aspects of love, the respondents felt that it was important to express love through symbolic gestures, but that it was not expressed enough in the relationship. The respondents also felt underprivileged in the aspects of time and love because of the experience of giving more in both aspects than what was given in return.

Webbgeografiska informationssystem och Javascript: Lokalrenderade vs servergenererade kartor i praktiken2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Stroke is one of the most common diseases in Sweden and every year 30 000 individuals are affected. Today it is possible for these persons to continue to live in their homes. Informal caregivers are often the ones who take over the caring responsibility. The aim of this literature study was to describe the spouse´s experience of being an informal carer to a person affected by stroke. The method used was a descriptive synthesis. The material consists of nine scientific research articles. In this study four themes emerged: The experience of change; The experience of loss of freedom and leisure time; The experience of gratefulness, hope and support; The experience of the future, anxiety and guilt and finally The experience of responsibility and control. The result of this study contributes to the nursing practice by highlighting the importance of awareness of these people’s experiences. Prevention is included in the nursing profession and as a nurse it is most important to prevent informal cares from being patients.

Min välsignelse och min börda: att vara närstående till en person med demenssjukdom2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Dementia is a widespread disease, of which relatives are affected and experience suffering.People with dementia live longer at home with support from relatives. By providingrelatives with support, unhealthiness can be prevented, and the health of the person withdementia can be promoted. The aim was to describe relatives experiences of living with aperson affected by dementia. The method consisted of a literature review with 11qualitative articles. The results were presented in four main themes, “Fighting against thewind”, “Changed relationships”, “The constant presence of feelings” and “The need ofsupport”. Relatives described changes, struggles and grief over the life-partner or parentthey once had, which no longer was present. Relatives experienced poor treatment fromhealth care and a need of support which wasn’t met. Nurses can prevent the sufferingexperienced by relatives with the right resources and knowledge. Nurses should also leadand instruct fellow employees to better be equipped to meet relatives and their needs.Nurses can also provide relatives with information regarding different facilities of support.

Påverkansteknik i en livsmedelsbutik: En fallstudie av påverkansteknik på PA:s Kvantum2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Every day customers are exposed to a large quantity of publicity of different kinds. Big amounts are put every year in publicity and the competition among the companies to be shown on the market is getting harder and harder. It is important for companies to understand the buying behaviour of the customer and since most of the decisions are made in the store, many companies make efforts to influence the customers and their decisions in the store.

The problem formulation in this case study is: What does a grocer store do to influence the customer’s buying behaviour?

The purpose of this essay is to identify and deepen our understanding of what factors that influence the customer’s buying decisions and what methods a grocer’s store use. The thesis is based on a case study and interviews have been done with two persons at PA:s Kvantum in Falköping.

The theory starts from a model of buying behaviour by Kotler (2006) that has been adapted to fit our research problem and purpose. We have focused on the part of the model that deals with marketing stimuli, and includes product, price, place and promotion. On top of this, two P:s have been added, i.e. personnel and physical evidence.

The results from the study show that the store in our case uses all of the P:s to influence the customer’s decisions in the store. It is not possible to distinguish any P that has greater importance than another in the work with controlling the buying behaviour of the customer; they are all used parallel and consociate to achieve as big effect as possible.

If a company successfully identifies the factors that influence a customer’s buying behaviour, the marketing measures can be optimized and adjusted to the current market; with the hope of a better result.

    Abstract [en]

Being the relative of a person with dementia is a life changing experience. The relatives often find themselves in a complex situation, which requires that the nurse, can identify needs among the relatives. It‘s also important that the nurse has a broad knowledge about the role of the relative as a caregiver, to be able to give support to them in this situation. The purpose of this study was to describe the relative’s experiences of taking care of a familymember with dementia in the home. Six autobiographies were studied to emerge in the experiences of the family caregivers. Burnards (1991) content analysis and Graneheims & Lundmans (2004) qualitative content analysis was used to analyze the data and the result reveals 3 main categories and 10 categories. The main categories were: Suffering, desperation and isolation. The situation of the caregiving relatives involves experiences of mental distress as well as having to cope with several difficulties. Their new role as a family caregiver is characterized by feelings of isolation which increases as the sickness proceeds.

Intuitivt kontrollschema: En möjlighet till ökad lärbarhet för spelkontroller2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Establishment of an Expression and Purification System for Plasmodium falciparum Multi Drug Resistance (pfmdr) Transporter2007Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Malaria is a life threatening parasite disease caused and transmitted by infected female anopheles mosquito. However, the parasite, Plasmodium falciparum, has become resistant to most anti malarial drugs, such as chloroquine, which contributes to fever and anaemia because of its ability to digest the haemoglobin in the red blood cells. The aims of this project were to establish whether “Bac to Bac” Baculoviral Expression System is suitable for expression of pfmdr 1 gene and for purification of the pgh 1 protein. The pfmdr 1 gene encodes an ABC transporter protein, pgh 1, fixed in the cell membrane of the Plasmodium falciparuum gut, which assist in elimination of drug compounds. Furthermore, “Bac to Bac” Baculoviral Expression System uses vectors with histidine tags to clone the pfmdr 1 gene and subsequently transform these into DH10Bac cells to produce the recombinant bacmid DNA. Since pfmdr 1 gene is an AT-rich sequence, PCR was optimized, by lowering the annealing and extension temperature to 47Co and 66Co respectively. The results show that “Bac to Bac” Baculoviral Expression System can be used to express the pfmdr 1 gene, though further experiments has to be performed.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The intention of this study is to investigate men's growing interest regarding shopping of clothes. In this study,it is reflected on the fact that there is a lack in valid range for men at discount stores. It was pointed out in the study that men found it difficult to find clothes without going up in price classes. The focus has been on whether there really is an increased interest from men regarding clothes and how stores respond to this. The theory we have used, have pointed out that this interest has increased and that the gender roles of men and women who have always been so obvious, is not as strong today. It also points out that retailers need to understand thei rcustomers and the fact that men and women are very different in their ways and values. We have used a qualitative and quantitative survey in the form ofa questionnaire for men aged 15 -35 as well as interviews with various stores. The essay has led us into a potential audience that stores in several cases have failed to reach at some degree.Through this we have gained more knowledge about why the selection to men is not so great and that men generally lack garments in low prices. The results we have arrived at are a confirmation o fwhat we already speculated in, that many of the respondents felt that there exist a lack of clothing in the low class of acceptable quality and design.

Context-Aware Mobile Learning on the Semantic Web2008In: Advances in Ubiquitous Computing: Future Paradigms and Directions / [ed] S. Kouadri Mostefaoui, Z. Maamar and G. M. Giaglis, IGI Global, 2008, p. 23-44Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This chapter focuses on the theoretical and technological aspects of designing mobile learning (m-learning) services that deliver context-aware learning resources from various locations and devices. Context-aware learning is an important requirement for next generation intelligent m-learning systems. The use of context in mobile devices is receiving increasing attention in mobile and ubiquitous computing research. In this research work, context reflects timeliness and mobility to nurture pervasive instruction throughout the learning ecosystem. In this context of ubiquity that is supported by a new generation of mobile wireless networks and smart mobile devices, it is clear that the notion of context plays a fundamental role since it influences the computational capabilities of the used technology. In particular, three types of context awareness are being considered in this work —platform-awareness, learner-awareness, and task-awareness. In this research work, these contextual elements are defined at the semantic level in order to facilitate discoverability of context-compliant learning resources, adaptability of content and services to devices of various capabilities, and adaptability of services to task at hand and interaction history. The work presented in this chapter contributes towards this direction, making use of the progress in Semantic Web theory and mobile computing to enable context-aware learning that satisfies learning timeliness and mobility requirements.

    Abstract [en]

Attempts have been made to analyse features in mathematics within a social constructivist context. In this paper we critically examine some of those attempts recently made with focus on problems of the objectivity, ontology, necessity, and atemporality of mathematics. Our conclusion is that these attempts fare no better than traditional alternatives, and that they, furthermore, create new problems of their own.

Multivariate modelling of faecal bacterial profiles of patients with IBS predicts responsiveness to a diet low in FODMAPs2018In: Gut, ISSN 0017-5749, E-ISSN 1468-3288, Vol. 67, no 5, p. 872-881Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Objective The effects of dietary interventions on gut bacteria are ambiguous. Following a previous intervention study, we aimed to determine how differing diets impact gut bacteria and if bacterial profiles predict intervention response. Design Sixty-seven patients with IBS were randomised to traditional IBS (n=34) or low fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides and polyols (FODMAPs) (n=33) diets for 4 weeks. Food intake was recorded for 4 days during screening and intervention. Faecal samples and IBS Symptom Severity Score (IBS-SSS) reports were collected before (baseline) and after intervention. A faecal microbiota dysbiosis test (GA-map Dysbiosis Test) evaluated bacterial composition. Per protocol analysis was performed on 61 patients from whom microbiome data were available. Results Responders (reduced IBS-SSS by >= 50) to low FODMAP, but not traditional, dietary intervention were discriminated from non-responders before and after intervention based on faecal bacterial profiles. Bacterial abundance tended to be higher in non-responders to a low FODMAP diet compared with responders before and after intervention. A low FODMAP intervention was associated with an increase in Dysbiosis Index (DI) scores in 42% of patients; while decreased DI scores were recorded in 33% of patients following a traditional IBS diet. Non-responders to a low FODMAP diet, but not a traditional IBS diet had higher DI scores than responders at baseline. Finally, while a traditional IBS diet was not associated with significant reduction of investigated bacteria, a low FODMAP diet was associated with reduced Bifidobacterium and Actinobacteria in patients, correlating with lactose consumption. Conclusions A low FODMAP, but not a traditional IBS diet may have significant impact on faecal bacteria. Responsiveness to a low FODMAP diet intervention may be predicted by faecal bacterial profiles.

Global Cytokine Profiles and Association With Clinical Characteristics in Patients With Irritable Bowel Syndrome2016In: American Journal of Gastroenterology, ISSN 0002-9270, E-ISSN 1572-0241, Vol. 111, no 8, p. 1165-1176Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

OBJECTIVES: Evidence suggests that patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) have an altered cytokine profile, although it is unclear whether cytokines are linked with symptom severity. We aimed to determine whether global serum and mucosal cytokine profiles differ between IBS patients and healthy subjects and whether cytokines are associated with IBS symptoms.

METHODS: Serum from 144 IBS patients and 42 healthy subjects was analyzed for cytokine levels of interleukin (IL)-5, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, IL-12p70, IL-13, IL-17A, interferon (IFN)-γ, and tumor necrosis factor (TNF) by MSD MULTI-ARRAY. In total, 109 IBS and 36 healthy sigmoid colon biopsies were analyzed for mRNA expression of IL-8, IL-10, TNF, and FOXP3 by quantitative reverse transcription PCR. Multivariate discrimination analysis evaluated global cytokine profiles. Rectal sensitivity, oroanal transit time, and psychological and gastrointestinal symptom severity were also assessed.

RESULTS: Global cytokine profiles of IBS patients and healthy subjects overlapped, but cytokine levels varied more in IBS patients. Serum levels of IL-6 and IL-8 tended to be increased and levels of IFN-γ tended to be decreased in IBS patients. Mucosal mRNA expression of IL-10 and FOXP3 tended to be decreased in IBS patients. Within both the full study cohort and IBS patients alone, serum level of TNF was associated with looser stool pattern, while subjects with more widespread somatic symptoms had increased serum levels of IL-6. Although neither IBS bowel habit subgroups nor patients with possible post-infectious IBS were associated with distinct cytokine profiles, a small cluster of IBS patients with comparatively elevated immune markers was identified.

CONCLUSIONS: Global cytokine profiles did not discriminate IBS patients from healthy subjects, but cytokine profiles were more varied among IBS patients than among healthy subjects, and a small subgroup of patients with enhanced immune activity was identified. Also, association of inflammatory cytokines with some clinical symptoms suggests that immune activation may be of importance in a subset of IBS patients.

A Scalable Recommender System for Automatic Playlist Continuation2018Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

As major companies like Spotify, Deezer and Tidal look to improve their music streamingproducts, they repeatedly opt for features that engage with users and lead to a morepersonalised user experience. Automatic playlist continuation enables these platforms tosupport their users with a seamless and smooth interface to enjoy music, own their experience, and discover new songs and artists. This report details a recommender system that enables automatic playlist continuation;providing the recommendation of music tracks to users who are creating new playlists or curatingexisting ones. The recommendation framework given in this report is able to provide accurateand pertinent track recommendation, but also addresses issues of scalability, practicalimplementation and decision transparency, so that commercial enterprises can deploy such asystem more easily and develop a winning strategy for their user experience. Furthermore, therecommender system does not require any rich and varied supply of user data, instead requiringonly basic information as input such as the title of the playlist, the tracks currently in the playlist, and the artists associated with those tracks. To accomplish these goals, the system relies on user-based collaborative filtering; a simple, wellestablishedmethod of recommendation, supported by web-scraping and topic modellingalgorithms that creatively use the supplied data to paint a more holistic image of what kind ofplaylist the user would like. This system was developed using data from the Million PlaylistDataset, released by Spotify in 2018 as part of the Recommender Systems Challenge, evaluatedusing R-precision, normalised discounted cumulative gain, and a proprietary evaluation metriccalled Recommended Song Clicks, that reflects the number of times a user would have to refreshthe list of recommendations provided if the current Spotify user interface was used tocommunicate them. Over an 80:20 train-test split, the scores were: 0.343, 0.224, and 15.73.

Creating and Maintaining Well Being: The Relaxation Response at Work2006Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

Numerous studies have presented physical and psychological benefits of meditation. Many of these are due to the so called Relaxation Response. In our study, we compared a concentrative meditation practice and a relaxation practice to investigate potential differences in the elicitation of the Relaxation Response. The study was performed during 12 weeks on 15 subjects employed by the Police Authority. We measured the subjective well-being, according to the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS), and by reading blood pressures. The descriptive analysis of the results, supports that the Relaxation Response is elicited by meditation and, although weaker, by physical relaxation. An elicited Relaxation Response is, however, maintained by relaxation. We also looked at the possibilities of introducing these practices in the work environment. There are several issues to deal with if the methods are to be applied in the work environment, mainly creating the time and place for the employees.

Adiponectin protects against development of metabolic disturbances in a PCOS mouse model2017In: Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America, ISSN 0027-8424, E-ISSN 1091-6490, Vol. 114, no 34, p. E7187-E7196, article id 201708854Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Adiponectin, together with adipocyte size, is the strongest factor associated with insulin resistance in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). This study investigates the causal relationship between adiponectin levels and metabolic and reproductive functions in PCOS. Prepubertal mice overexpressing adiponectin from adipose tissue (APNtg), adiponectin knockouts (APNko), and their wild-type (WT) littermate mice were continuously exposed to placebo or dihydrotestosterone (DHT) to induce PCOS-like traits. As expected, DHT exposure led to reproductive dysfunction, as judged by continuous anestrus, smaller ovaries with a decreased number of corpus luteum, and an increased number of cystic/atretic follicles. A two-way between-groups analysis showed that there was a significant main effect for DHT exposure, but not for genotype, indicating adiponectin does not influence follicle development. Adiponectin had, however, some protective effects on ovarian function. Similar to in many women with PCOS, DHT exposure led to reduced adiponectin levels, larger adipocyte size, and reduced insulin sensitivity in WTs. APNtg mice remained metabolically healthy despite DHT exposure, while APNko-DHT mice were even more insulin resistant than their DHT-exposed littermate WTs. DHT exposure also reduced the mRNA expression of genes involved in metabolic pathways in gonadal adipose tissue of WT and APNko, but this effect of DHT was not observed in APNtg mice. Moreover, APNtg-DHT mice displayed increased pancreatic mRNA levels of insulin receptors, Pdx1 and Igf1R, suggesting adiponectin stimulates beta cell viability/hyperplasia in the context of PCOS. In conclusion, adiponectin improves metabolic health but has only minor effects on reproductive functions in this PCOS-like mouse model.

Autonomic nervous system activation mediates the increase in whole-body glucose uptake in response to electroacupuncture2017In: The FASEB Journal, ISSN 0892-6638, E-ISSN 1530-6860, Vol. 31, no 8, p. 3288-3297Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

A single bout of low-frequency electroacupuncture (EA) causing muscle contractions increases whole-body glucose uptake in insulin-resistant rats. We explored the underlying mechanism of this finding and whether it can be translated into clinical settings. Changes in glucose infusion rate (GIR) were measured by euglycemic-hyperinsulinemic clamp during and after 45 min of low-frequency EA in 21 overweight/obese women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and 21 controls matched for age, weight, and body mass index (experiment 1) and in rats receiving autonomic receptor blockers (experiment 2). GIR was higher after EA in controls and women with PCOS. Plasma serotonin levels and homovanillic acid, markers of vagal activity, decreased in both controls and patients with PCOS. Adipose tissue expression of pro-nerve growth factor (proNGF) decreased, and the mature NGF/proNGF ratio increased after EA in PCOS, but not in controls, suggesting increased sympathetic-driven adipose tissue metabolism. Administration of alpha-/beta-adrenergic receptor blockers in rats blocked the increase in GIR in response to EA. Muscarinic and dopamine receptor antagonist also blocked the response but with slower onset. In conclusion, a single bout of EA increases whole-body glucose uptake by activation of the sympathetic and partly the parasympathetic nervous systems, which could have important clinical implications for the treatment of insulin resistance.

Att leva med fibromyalgi - en sjukdom som drabbar hela familjen: En litteraturbaserad studie2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Background: From the beginning fibromyalgia was classified as rheumatism, but now we know it is caused by central nervous system (CNS) disorder. The symptoms are diffuse but most common are constant pain and fatigue. There are no specific tests to establish the diagnose and no satisfying medication. The disease is not visible outside the body and many experiences misbelieve from care staff and relatives, which affects their wellbeing negatively. Aim: The aim of this study is to describe how patients and their family are affected by fibromyalgia. Method: A literature based study was used to identify the knowledge that already existed in the topic. Results: Fibromyalgia is an invisible disease that affects the individual and their family significantly. Because the complicity of establishing the diagnose and the fact that fibromyalgia can not be seen outside the body, these patients are often met with distrust from both doctors and acquaintances. The lack of information is apparent, which can affect the disease negatively. Four main themes emerged, The changed lift, To be misbelieved, Changed rolls and the vague knowledge. Conclusion: Nurses have an important function, to listen to and inform individuals with fibromyalgia, and their relatives. To be able to inform, a higher knowledge and understanding is necessary. To get information can be the difference between coping with the disease, or not.

Omvårdnad vid bensår: En litteraturöversikt2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

    Abstract [en]

Background: The number of elderly in Sweden is increasing. They are often fragile and sickly, needing more care and support. To meet an increased need of healthcare, a collaboration project, Collaborative Healthcare, was established to ensure that patients are treated at the right place. Research shows that the elderly often fall ill from hospital admission, and after visits to the emergency department, they are more often admitted because of their complex medical history. Aim: To investigate whether the district nurse's profession within the project Collaborative Healthcare leads to a reduction in the use of other healthcare resources. Method: This study is retrospective with a quantitative approach. Data collected by others within the project were used. The analysis was performed with descriptive and correlation analysis. The results are presented in tables, figures and text. Results: The district nurse's efforts often lead to nursing in the home, preventing visits to health centers and emergency rooms as well as hospital admissions. Conclusion: Cooperation between different healthcare authorities leads to benefits for both patients and staff.

Distansarbete: räcker lagstiftningen/krävs avtal?1998Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Neural correlates of romantic love and romantic attachment2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In the field of neuroscience, being in love and feeling romantically attached to a partner is described as a dynamic process. Romantic love may be viewed as a motivational system, changing throughout time and place, fluctuating on the interest and motivation of the individual. Early memories and attachment towards a caregiver, lay the foundation for later attachment behavior, also known as attachment styles. In this thesis, an exploratory approach is present. The thesis aims to introduce and describe the neural correlates of romantic love and romantic attachment. Brain regions concerned with reward, emotion and thought processing, such as the reward circuitry network of the brain and the limbic system, are being investigated. So are other brain areas involved in romantic love and romantic attachment. Research findings suggest that brain areas responsible for affection, emotional control, learning, memory and social judgment are all involved in the complex processes of being in love and feeling romantically attached. These findings are represented by the involvement of the frontal lobe, cerebral cortex, limbic system, orbitofrontal cortex, and hippocampus, anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), ventral tegmental area (VTA), caudate tail, including the reward pathways of the brain. Distribution and regulation of neurotransmitters such as; vasopressin, oxytocin, dopamine, corticosterone and serotonin are all present in the state of romantic  attachment and romantic love. Overlapping evidence confirms the involvement of the reward circuitry network, together with the limbic system as crucial in the formation and maintenance of a romantic relationship.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This article relates computer gaming to the social psychology of identity, focusing the notion that identity construction has a reflected character not only in virtual reality but also in real life. This gives a tight correspondence between the two, although the screen construction of identity goes on in greater independence of real other persons. Gaming has the trait that it contracts several events at one point in space and time. This provides for two extremes of identification: functional and existential identification, which are tightly coupled in gaming, but also for the element of meaning creation in gaming, where the step from concrete action to mental act is short, as well as for the processes of anticipatory identification that are found in it. This gives a high emotional intensity to it. The analysis is based on a theoretical sketch of stages in the act, building on the work of G. H. Mead.

    Abstract [en]

Not to put the cart before the horse; clarification of Mead's"role taking"

George Herbert Mead's "role taking" is subject to many interpretations. Some dominant definitions restrict role taking to reflective people trying to understand each other and taking on each others' roles. Other definitions restrict role taking to the stage of a developed language. Against these two types of definitions I assert that Meads concept is explanatory, not merely descriptive, functionally as well as existentially. It has a value also on elementary levels of human development, where man is socially similar to other primates. Swedish sociologists have contributed fruitfully to straighten the debate. My intention is to clarify it further, and to explicate my own interpretation. Basic role taking is a non-reflective activity going on in any place where living entities influence each other with gestures in similar ways. In human beings it gives rise to conscious discursive reflectivity, and it coincides phylogenetically and ontogenetically with development of language, rather than being created by it. Role taking emanates from breaking automatic responsivity. It introduces distance and reflectivity and results in conscious social behavior, rather than being produced by such. In this way, role taking is a major step in the development of intelligence on earth.

    Abstract [en]

This paper analyzes the tendency of taking the "I" and the "me" in G.H. Meads theory of role taking as two separate, qualitatively different parts of human personality, the "I" being of individual origin, the "me" of social. In the original Meadian sense role taking gives rise to both the "I" and the "me". They are dialectically united rather than dualistically separated aspects. They refer to the joint functional power of the subject, finding itself as an object, mediated by the Other. As a consequence, the link between body and the social world becomes theoretically more stringent, as the body is given its place as a cognitive social object outside the human social experience and as a source of agencysui generis,a conception which is in opposition to Meads. The stress on the "I"-phase, as related to body and concrete action in combination with its direct relation to the "me"-phase, actualizes Mead as a forerunner in modern biologic/neurologic research on human perceptual, motivational and intentional capacity. Swedish Mead interpreters are critically analyzed. Interpretations of Charon, Giddens, Joas and Habermas are partly scrutinized. The author defines the conceptual pair in terms of activity, subjectivity, temporal relativity and distance.
