    Evaluating and prioritizing the healthcare waste disposal center locations using a hybrid multi-criteria decision-making method2023Ingår i: Scientific Reports, E-ISSN 2045-2322, Vol. 13, nr 1, artikel-id 15130Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Healthcare waste disposal center location (HCWDCL) impacts the environment and the health of living beings. Different and sometimes contradictory criteria in determining the appropriate site location for disposing of healthcare waste (HCW) complicate the decision-making process. This research presents a hybrid multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) method, named PROMSIS, to determine the appropriate HCWDCL in a real case. The PROMSIS is the combination of two well-known MCDM methods, namely TOPSIS and PROMETHEE. Moreover, fuzzy theory is used to describe the uncertainties of the problem parameters. To provide a reliable decision on selecting the best HCWDCL, a comprehensive list of criteria is identified through a literature review and experts’ opinions obtained from the case study. In total, 40 criteria are identified and classified into five major criteria, namely economic, environmental, social, technical, and geological. The weight of the considered criteria is determined by the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) method. Then, the score of the alternative HCWDCLs in each considered criterion is obtained. Finally, the candidate locations for disposing of HCWs are ranked by the proposed fuzzy PROMSIS method. The results show that the most important criteria in ranking the alternatives in the studied case are economic, environmental, and social, respectively. Moreover, the sub-criteria of operating cost, transportation cost, and pollution are identified as the most important sub-criteria, respectively.

Energy‐efficient and sustainable supply chain in the manufacturing industry2023Ingår i: Energy Science & Engineering, ISSN 2050-0505, Vol. 11, nr 1, s. 357-382Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This study aims at reducing energy consumption in supply chain networks by providing optimal integrated production and transportation scheduling. The considered supply chain consists of one main manufacturing center, multiple production units (i.e., suppliers), and multiple heterogeneous vehicles as the transportation fleet. To schedule this complex supply chain network in an energy-efficient way, several decisions should be made concerning the assignment of orders to suppliers and determining their production sequence, splitting orders, assigning orders to vehicles, and assigning delivery priority to orders. To cope with the problem, a mixed-integer linear programming model is presented. Due to the complexity of the problem, a novel development of the genetic algorithm named the Multiple Reference Group Genetic Algorithm (MRGGA) is also proposed. Four objectives are considered to be optimized to meet both suitability and energy-efficiency aspects in the supply chain network. These optimization objectives are to minimize the total orders' delivery times to the manufacturing center, fuel consumption by the vehicles, energy consumption at supplies, and maximize orders' quality. To analyze the performance of the proposed algorithm, a real case and a set of generated instances are solved. The results obtained by the proposed algorithm are compared with an existing genetic algorithm in the literature. Moreover, the results are also compared with the optimal solutions obtained from the mathematical model for small-size problems. The results of the comparisons show the efficiency of the proposed MRGGA in finding energy-efficient solutions for the considered supply chain network.

    Supply Chain Optimization Considering Sustainability Aspects2021Ingår i: Sustainability, E-ISSN 2071-1050, Vol. 13, nr 21, s. 1-23, artikel-id 11873Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Supply chain optimization concerns the improvement of the performance and efficiency of the manufacturing and distribution supply chain by making the best use of resources. In the context of supply chain optimization, scheduling has always been a challenging task for experts, especially when considering a distributed manufacturing system (DMS). The present study aims to tackle the supply chain scheduling problem in a DMS while considering two essential sustainability aspects, namely environmental and economic. The economic aspect is addressed by optimizing the total delivery time of order, transportation cost, and production cost while optimizing environmental pollution and the quality of products contribute to the environmental aspect. To cope with the problem, it is mathematically formulated as a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) model. Due to the complexity of the problem, an improved genetic algorithm (GA) named GA-TOPKOR is proposed. The algorithm is a combination of GA and TOPKOR, which is one of the multi-criteria decision-making techniques. To assess the efficiency of GA-TOPKOR, it is applied to a real-life case study and a set of test problems. The solutions obtained by the algorithm are compared against the traditional GA and the optimum solutions obtained from the MILP model. The results of comparisons collectively show the efficiency of the GA-TOPKOR. Analysis of results also revealed that using the TOPKOR technique in the selection operator of GA significantly improves its performance.

Prioritizing healthcare waste disposal methods considering environmental health using an enhanced multi-criteria decision-making method2023Ingår i: Environmental Pollutants and Bioavailability, ISSN 2639-5932, Vol. 35, nr 1, s. 250-269, artikel-id 2218568Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The Healthcare Waste Disposal Method Selection (HCWDMS) is a complicated problem due to multiple and often contradictory criteria with different importance degrees. Thus, decision-makers are restored to multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) methods to prioritize and select the best HCW disposal methods. This study introduces an enhanced MCDM method to deal with the HCWDMS problem. To address the problem, a comprehensive list of criteria and HCW disposal methods are identified. All the criteria are categorized into four main criteria, and Fuzzy Analysis Hierarchy Process is used to determine the weights of considered criteria and sub-criteria. The study results show that environmental, economic, technical, and social criteria are the most important in selecting disposal methods, respectively. Moreover, the sub-criteria of ‘Health Risk’, ‘Release with health effects’, and ‘Capital cost’ have the highest importance, respectively. Additionally, the methods of ‘Microwave’, ‘Sterilization by autoclave’, and ‘Reverse polymerization’ have the highest priority, respectively.

Optimizing disaster relief goods distribution and transportation: a mathematical model and metaheuristic algorithms2023Ingår i: Applied Mathematics in Science and Engineering, E-ISSN 2769-0911, Vol. 31, nr 1, artikel-id 2252980Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The effective distribution of relief goods is critical in mitigating the impact of natural disasters and preserving human life. This study addresses a relief goods distribution problem, assuming the existence of multiple relief orders that must be delivered to various disaster-stricken regions from a network of warehouses using a fleet of diverse vehicles. The objective is to identify the most suitable warehouse for each relief order, allocate relief orders to vehicles, batch the orders in the designated vehicles, and devise routing plans to minimize the total delivery time. A mixed-integer linear programming model is formulated to tackle this problem. Owing to the problem’s NP-hard nature, a metaheuristic algorithm, known as the Multiple League Championship Algorithm (MLCA), is developed. Furthermore, two innovative variants of the MLCA , namely the League Base Multiple League Championship Algorithm (L- MLCA) and the Playoff Multiple League Championship Algorithm (P-MLCA), are introduced.Experimental results indicate that the P-MLCA outperforms the other two algorithms. The solutions derived from the P-MLCA are compared with the optimal solutions obtained by a commercial solver for small-scale problems. This comparative analysis demonstrates the promising performance of the P-MLCA in finding the optimal distribution of relief goods.

Identifying and prioritizing marketing strategies for the building energy management systems using a hybrid fuzzy MCDM technique2023Ingår i: Energy Science & Engineering, ISSN 2050-0505, Vol. 11, nr 11, s. 4324-4348Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Preventing energy waste in residential and office buildings has emerged as a critical issue in both developed and developing countries over recent decades. The growing demand for oil and energy reserves has amplified the urgency of this concern. The deployment of building energy management systems (BEMSs) can lead to timely responses to changes in environmental conditions, the prevention of energy wastage, a reduction in CO2 emissions, and an increase in the longevity of building equipment. Despite the undeniable benefits of BEMSs, their market size remains small, creating challenges for providers in reaching potential customers. This research seeks to identify and prioritize the marketing strategies for BEMSs. A case study was conducted, employing the “Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats” analysis as a tool for identifying marketing strategies related to BEMSs. This method resulted in the identification of 18 distinct marketing strategies. These strategies were subsequently prioritized using a novel fuzzy multicriteria decision-making technique, VIkor-topSIS, considering six specific criteria. The findings of the study suggested a hierarchical influence of six criteria on the BEMS market, arranged in the following order of significance: effectiveness, cost, attainability, complexity, timing, and popularity. Furthermore, the top three marketing strategies for BEMSs were found to be internet advertising strategies, discounts to consumers, and online sales. The analysis of the results has also offered valuable insights into the strengths and weaknesses of the studied BEMS provider, as well as the opportunities and threats present within the BEMS market.

A fuzzy three-dimensional house of quality to integrate and coordinate departments’ activities in organizations2023Ingår i: IEEE Access, E-ISSN 2169-3536Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This study aims to introduce a method to integrate and coordinate departments’ activities to enhance the service quality of organizations using Quality Function Deployment (QFD). To this purpose, the classical two-dimensional House Of Quality (HOQ) matrix is changed to a three-dimensional form (3D-HOQ). The 3D-HOQ is applied to the marketing and Human Resources (HR) departments of a bank to determine customers’ and employees’ demands, respectively. The 3D-HOQ is also employed to provide a unique list of technical requirements to satisfy the identified demands. Obtaining a unique list of technical requirements with the cooperation of both departments reduces the inconsistency between departments, saves cost and time by preventing reworks and parallel works, and increases the organization’s efficiency. Moreover, 3D-HOQ is combined with the SERVQUAL technique and fuzzy theory to determine the weight of obtained technical requirements. The study is conducted in four main steps, (1) identifying the customers’ and employees’ demands, (2) identifying the technical requirements for simultaneous satisfaction of both customers’ and employees’ demands, (3) determining the relationships between the technical requirements and the identified demands, and (4) prioritizing technical requirements. Applying the 3D-HOQ resulted in identifying 30 customers’ demands, 30 employees’ demands, and 50 technical requirements. The study results show that "using new banking technologies" has the highest weight among the customers’ demands, and "job security" has been found to have the highest weight among employees’ demands. Moreover, "Intra-organizational processes automation" has been identified as the technical requirement with the highest weight.

Enabling robot grasping teaching using mixed reality2022Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 20 poäng / 30 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

The exploration of realistic grasping with industrial robots could open gates in the way of understanding the industry, giving robots the ability to adapt to different situations without reprogramming and therefore, become more flexible tools. In order to facilitate this apparently complex task it is important to implement new tools for robot programming. The project presented shows the development of a program that lets the user give specific instructions about ways of approaching new objects in the task of robot grasping using a mixed reality interface. The proposed solution can let the user work in real time and repeat saved paths with familiar objects. This program consists of recording the user’s movement, saving and processing the information to a robot that can replicate the exact same approaches and grasps. The development of this project as a mixed reality interface permits bringing together the real and virtual world with safety of working with a previsualization of the robot and with the certainty of processing the information right in the real world. This solution is a flexible tool that can be changed to different situations and be implemented in any kind of production.

    Abstract [sv]

Single machine batch processing problem with release dates to minimize total completion time2018Ingår i: International Journal of Industrial Engineering Computations, ISSN 1923-2926, E-ISSN 1923-2934, Vol. 9, nr 3, s. 331-348Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

A single machine batch processing problem with release dates to minimize the total completion time (1|rj,batch|∑Cj ) is investigated in this research. An original mixed integer linear programming (MILP) model is proposed to optimally solve the problem. Since the research problem at hand is shown to be NP-hard, several different meta-heuristic algorithms based on tabu search (TS) and particle swarm optimization (PSO) are used to solve the problem. To find the most performing heuristic optimization technique, a set of test cases ranging in size (small, medium, and large) are randomly generated and solved by the proposed meta-heuristic algorithms. An extended comparison analysis is carried out and the outperformance of a hybrid meta-heuristic technique properly combining PSO and genetic algorithm (PSO-GA) is statistically demonstrated.

Minimization of total completion time on a batch processing machine with arbitrary release dates: an effectual teaching–learning based optimization approach2019Ingår i: Production Engineering, ISSN 0944-6524, E-ISSN 1863-7353, Vol. 13, nr 5, s. 557-566Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

In this research study, a single machine batch-processing problem with release dates to minimize the total completion times of jobs is considered. The machine is able to process at most a certain number of jobs at the same time and the total size of the jobs allocated to a batch cannot exceed the machine capacity. Since the research problem has been shown to be NP-hard, an efective Teaching–Learning Based Optimization (TLBO) is proposed. A constructive heuristic approach is developed to generate initial feasible solutions for the TLBO. In order to enhance the efciency of the proposed TLBO, a Tabu Search (TS) with three diferent neighborhood generation mechanisms is incorporated into the teaching phase and learner phase separately. To validate the outcomes of the proposed TLBO, we carry out an experimental study and compare its outcomes with the best-known results obtained by several meta-heuristic methods on a set of benchmark instances derived from the literature. The computational results show that the proposed TLBO with the incorporation of TS in its learning phase is able to come up with very good quality solutions.

Non-identical parallel machines batch processing problem with release dates, due dates and variable maintenance activity to minimize total tardiness2022Ingår i: Computers & industrial engineering, ISSN 0360-8352, E-ISSN 1879-0550, Vol. 168, artikel-id 108135Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Combination of job scheduling and maintenance activity has been widely investigated in the literature. We consider a non-identical parallel machines batch processing (BP) problem with release dates, due dates and variable maintenance activity to minimize total tardiness. An original mixed integer linear programming (MILP) model is formulated to provide an optimal solution. As the problem under investigation is known to be strongly NP-hard, two meta-heuristic approaches based on Simulated Annealing (SA) and Variable Neighborhood Search (VNS) are developed. A constructive heuristic method (H) is proposed to generate initial feasible solutions for the SA and VNS. In order to evaluate the results of the proposed solution approaches, a set of instances were randomly generated. Moreover, we compare the performance of our proposed approaches against four meta-heuristic algorithms adopted from the literature. The obtained results indicate that the proposed solution methods have a competitive behaviour and they outperform the other meta-heuristics in most instances. Although in all cases, H + SA is the most performing algorithm compared to the others.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

A tool to assist and evalute workstation design2013Ingår i: Proceedings of NES 2013, 45th Nordic Ergonomics & Human Factors Society conference, Iceland, August 2013, 2013Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

It can be argued that it is common that industrial workstations are “built” rather than purposefully designed with user and task requirements in mind. Afterwards, built-in problems typically need to be corrected, causing undesired costs and efforts. With the objective to assist workstation designers in avoiding most problems already in the design phase, a design support tool is being developed. The paper argues the need for such a tool and presents the fundamental tool functionality. Expected advantages are more efficient and ergonomic workstations and a more efficient design process with built-in learning and documentation.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Automatic in-line inspection of shape based on photogrammetry2016Ingår i: The 7th International Swedish Production Symposium, SPS16, Conference Proceedings: 25th – 27th of October 2016, Lund: Swedish Production Academy , 2016, s. 1-9Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

We are describing a fully automatic in-line shape inspection system for controlling the shape of moving objects on a conveyor belt. The shapes of the objects are measured using a full-field optical shape measurement method based on photogrammetry. The photogrammetry system consists of four cameras, a flash, and a triggering device. When an object to be measured arrives at a given position relative to the system, the flash and cameras are synchronously triggered to capture images of the moving object. From the captured images a point-cloud representing the measured shape is created. The point-cloud is then aligned to a CAD-model, which defines the nominal shape of the measured object, using a best-fit method and a feature-based alignment method. Deviations between the point-cloud and the CAD-model are computed giving the output of the inspection process. The computational time to create a point-cloud from the captured images is about 30 seconds and the computational time for the comparison with the CAD-model is about ten milliseconds. We report on recent progress with the shape inspection system.

Automated Bottleneck Analysis of Production Systems: Increasing the applicability of simulation-based multi-objective optimization for bottleneck analysis within industry2018Doktorsavhandling, sammanläggning (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [sv]

    Bidrag från detta avhandlingsarbete inkluderar:

    (1) implementering av en mångsidig optimeringsvariabel (multiple-choice set variabel) och därtill en reparationsstrategi i evolutionära flermålsoptimeringsalgoritmer(EA);

    (2) introducera en ny teknik som baserat på information från en sekventiell screening initialiserar första populationen i en EA samt möjliggör skapandet av variabelvisa genetiska operatorer, båda med syftet att stödja en effektivare sökprocess;

    (3) en automatiserad formulering av flermålsoptimeringsproblemet i SCORE för att bespara användarna den stora mängd manuellt och felbenäget arbete med optimeringsvariabler och mål som krävs;

    (4) presentera hur upprepad användning av rankningsavstånd (mätetal som visar hur lika/olika två rankningar är varandra) kan användas för att kvantifiera och visualisera konvergens och korrekthet av flaskhalsrankningen genererad av SCORE.

Multiple Choice Sets and Manhattan Distance Based Equality Constraint Handling for Production Systems OptimizationManuskript (preprint) (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

Many simulation-based optimization packages provide powerful algorithms to solve industrialproblems. But most of them fail to oer their users the techniques they needto eectively handle multiple-choice problems involving a large set of decision variableswith mixed types (continuous, discrete and combinatorial) and problems that are highlyconstrained (e.g., with many equality constraints). Yet such issues are found in manyreal-world production system design and improvement problems. Thus, this paper introducesa method to eectively embed multiple choice sets and Manhattan-distancebasedconstraint handling into multi-objective optimization algorithms like NSGA-II andNSGA-III. This paper illustrates and evaluates how these two techniques have been appliedtogether to solve optimal workload, buer and workforce allocation problems. Anexample follows, showing their application to a complex production system improvementproblem at an automotive manufacturer.

Practical Production Systems Optimization Using Multiple-Choice Sets and Manhattan Distance based Constraints Handling2014Ingår i: 12th International Industrial Simulation Conference 2014: ISC'2014 / [ed] Amos Ng; Anna Syberfeldt, Eurosis , 2014, s. 97-103Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Many simulation-based optimization packages provide powerful algorithms to solve large-scale system problems. But most of them fall short to offer their users the techniques to effectively handle decision variables that are of multiple-choice type, as well as equality constraints, which can be found in many real-world industrial system design and improvement problems. Hence, this paper introduces how multiple choice sets and Manhattan-distance-based constraint handling can be effectively embedded into a meta-heuristic algorithm for simulation-based optimization. How these two techniques have been applied together to make the improvement of a complex production system, provided by an automotive manufacturer, possible will also be presented.

On the convergence of stochastic simulation-based multi-objective optimization for bottleneck identificationManuskript (preprint) (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

By innovatively formulating a bottleneck identication problem into a bi-objective optimization,simulation-based multi-objective optimization (SMO) can be eectively used as a new method for gen-eral production systems improvement. In a single optimization run, all attainable, maximum throughputlevels of the system can be sought through various optimal combinations of improvement changes ofthe resources. Additionally, the post-optimality frequency analysis on the Pareto-optimal solutions cangenerate a rank order of the attributes of the resources required to achieve the target throughput levels.Observing that existing research mainly put emphasis on measuring the convergence of the optimizationin the objective space, leaving no information on when the solutions in the decision space have convergedand stabilized, this paper represents the rst eort in increasing the knowledge about the convergence ofSMO for the rank ordering in the context of bottleneck analysis. By customizing the Spearman's footruledistance and Kendall's tau, this paper presents how these metrics can be used eectively to provide thedesired visual aid in determining the convergence of bottleneck ranking, hence can assist the user todetermine correctly the terminating condition of the optimization process. It illustrates and evaluatesthe convergence of the SMO for bottleneck analysis on a set of scalable benchmark models as well as twoindustrial simulation models. The results have shed promising direction of applying these new metrics tocomplex, real-world applications.

Variables Screening Enabled Multi-Objective Optimization for Bottleneck Analysis of Production SystemsManuskript (preprint) (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

Bottleneck analysis can be defined as the process that includes both bottleneck identification and improvement. In the literature most of the proposed bottleneck-related methods address mainly bottleneck detection. By innovatively formulating a bottleneck analysis into a bi-objective optimization method, recent research has shown that all attainable, maximized TH of a production system, through various combinations of improvement changes of the resources, can be sought in a single optimization run. Nevertheless, when applied to simulation-based evaluation, such a bi-objective optimization is computationally expensive especially when the simulation model is complex and/or with a large amount of decision variables representing the improvement actions. The aim of this paper is therefore to introduce a novel variables screening enabled bi-objective optimization that is customized for bottleneck analysis of production systems. By using the Sequential Bifurcation screening technique which is particularly suitable for large-scale simulation models, fewer simulation runs are required to find the most influenacing factors in a simulation model. With the knowledge of these input variables, the bi-objective optimization used in the bottleneck analysis can customize the genetic operators on these variables individually according to their rank of main effects with the target to speed up the entire optimization process. The screening-enabled algorithm is then applied to a set of experiments designed to evaluate how well it performs when the number of variables increases is a scalable, benchmark model, as well as two real-world industrial-scale simulation models found in the automotive industry. The results have illustrated the promising direction of incorporating the knowledge of influencing variables and variable-wise genetic operators into a multi-objective optimization algorithm for bottleneck analysis.

    Abstract [en]

Manufacturing companies of today are under pressure to run their production most efficiently in order to sustain their competitiveness. Manufacturing systems usually have bottlenecks that impede their performance, and finding the causes of these constraints, or even identifying their locations, is not a straightforward task. SCORE (Simulation-based COnstraint REmoval) is a promising method for detecting and ranking bottlenecks of production systems, that utilizes simulation-based multi-objective optimization (SMO). However, formulating a real-world, large-scale industrial bottleneck analysis problem into a SMO problem using the SCORE-method manually include tedious and error-prone tasks that may prohibit manufacturing companies to benefit from it. This paper presents how the greater part of the manual tasks can be automated by introducing a new, generic way of defining improvements of production systems and illustrates how the simplified application of SCORE can assist manufacturing companies in identifying their production constraints.

    Abstract [en]

In digital human modelling (DHM), ergonomics evaluations are typically done with few human models. However, humans vary a lot in sizes and shapes. Therefore, few manikins can rarely ensure accommodation of an entire target population. Different approaches exist on how to consider anthropometric diversity. This paper reviews current  DHM  tools  and  clarify  problems  and  opportunities  when  working  with anthropometric diversity. The aim is to suggest  functionality  for a state of the art DHM  module  and  work  process  for  considering  anthropometric  diversity.  The study is done by an analysis of some of the current DHM systems and by interviews of  personnel  at  car  companies  about  their  way  of  working  with  anthropometric diversity. The study confirmed that critical production simulations are often done in early development stages with only one or a few human models. The reason for this is claimed to be time consuming processes, both at the creation of the human model but  mainly  when  correctly  positioning  the  model  in  the  CAD  environment.  The development  of  a  new  method  and  work  process  for  considering  anthropometric diversity is suggested. Necessary features for such a module are that it shall be easy to use and not require expert knowledge about the consideration of anthropometric diversity. It shall also be configurable and transparent, in a sense that it should be possible  to  work  with  own  anthropometric  data  and  ergonomics  evaluation standards. The module has to be flexible and have different entrances depending on the type of anthropometric problem being analyzed. An improved work method is expected to lead to faster and more correct analyses.

Using experimental design to define boundary manikins2012Ingår i: Work: A journal of Prevention, Assessment and rehabilitation, ISSN 1051-9815, E-ISSN 1875-9270, Vol. 41, s. 4598-4605Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

When evaluating human-machine interaction it is central to consider anthropometric diversity to ensure intended accommodation levels. A well-known method is the use of boundary cases where manikins with extreme but likely measurement combinations are derived by mathematical treatment of anthropometric data. The supposition by that method is that the use of these manikins will facilitate accommodation of the expected part of the total, less extreme, population. In literature sources there are differences in how many and in what way these manikins should be defined. A similar field to the boundary case method is the use of experimental design in where relationships between affecting factors of a process is studied by a systematic approach. This paper examines the possibilities to adopt methodology used in experimental design to define a group of manikins. Different experimental designs were adopted to be used together with a confidence region and its axes. The result from the study shows that it is possible to adapt the methodology of experimental design when creating groups of manikins. The size of these groups of manikins depends heavily on the number of key measurements but also on the type of chosen experimental design.

Assessment of manikin motions in IMMA2012Ingår i: Advances in applied human modeling and simulation / [ed] Vincent G. Duffy, Boca Raton: CRC Press, 2012, s. 235-244Kapitel i bok, del av antologi (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

When evaluating human-machine interaction in a virtual environment using Digital human modelling (DHM) it is important to ensure that the predicted motions lie within the range of behavioural diversity for different people within a population. This paper presents a study in which a comparison is made between motions predicted by the DHM tool IMMA (Intelligently Moving Manikin) and motions from real humans stored in a motion database. Results show similar motions but the predicted motions were in total statistically significantly different compared to the motions performed by real persons. The differences are most likely due to the balance function and joint constraints that the IMMA tool uses for predicting motions. Differences can also be due to other factors, aside of body size, such as age, gender or strength that affects the movement behaviour.

    Abstract [en]

Collaborative robots (Cobots) have been proposed to guide and assist human operators to move heavy objects in a given trajectory. Most of the existing cobots us steering wheels; typical drawbacks of using steering wheels include (i) the difficulty to follow a trajectory with a curvature larger than that of the base platform, (ii) the difficulty to mount encoders on steering wheels due to self-spinning of the wheels, and (iii) the difficulty to quarantine dynamic control performance since it is purely kinematic control. In this paper, a new cobot with the omni-wheels has been proposed, and its design model has been developed, and a simulation has been conducted to validate this control performance.

Optimization of machining processes from the perspective of energy consumption: A case study2012Ingår i: Journal of manufacturing systems, ISSN 0278-6125, E-ISSN 1878-6642, Vol. 31, nr 4, s. 420-428Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

One of the primary objectives of sustainable manufacturing is to minimize energy consumption in its manufacturing processes. A strategy of energy saving is to adapt new materials or new processes; but its implementation requires radical changes of the manufacturing system and usually a heavy initial investment. The other strategy is to optimize existing manufacturing processes from the perspective of energy saving. However, an explicit relational model between machining parameters and energy cost is required; while most of the works in this field treat the manufacturing processes as black or gray boxes. In this paper, analytical energy modeling for the explicit relations of machining parameters and energy consumption is investigated, and the modeling method is based on the kinematic and dynamic behaviors of chosen machine tools. The developed model is applied to optimize the  machine setup for energy saving. A new parallel kinematic machine Exechon is used to demonstrate the procedure of energy modeling. The simulation results indicate that the optimization can result in 67% energy saving for the specific drilling operation of the given machine tool. This approach can be extended and applied to other machines to establish their energy models for sustainable manufacturing.

Cloud-based monitor and control of industrial robots2021Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 20 poäng / 30 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

Nowadays, interconnectivity is becoming increasingly important. According to industry, the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) is the core technology of Industry 4.0. Connectivity between different processes or components in the industry makes one process aware of each other, making systems more intelligent and self-sufficient. This thesis proposes various ways to control and monitor an industrial process with the cloud, explaining step by step the connections between the industrial equipment and the cloud. Furthermore, this thesis's one sub-objective is to make an industrial process, which was previously PLC-based, entirely cloud-based. For the latter work, simulation software is used to create a production line, as there is a lack of equipment. Consequently, it will also test the flexibility of the system to move between the virtual and the real environment, which is another challenge of Industry 4.0 and digitalisation. In the discussion part, the thesis talks about the shift from PLC-based to PC-based systems in the industry, mentioning the limitations and advantages.

Constitutive behaviour and fracture toughness of an adhesive layer2005Licentiatavhandling, monografi (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

This report presents the fracture energy and the complete stress – elongation relation for a structural adhesive loaded in modus I. The experiments are performed on the Double Cantilever Beam (DCB) specimen and the method to analyse the experiments is based on the J-integral approach which means that the energy release rate, i.e. J, is measured continuously during an experiment. Since J is given by the area under the stress – elongation relation for the adhesive layer, both the fracture energy and the stress – elongation relation can be measured in the experiments. The geometry of the specimens is varied in order to examine if the evaluated stress – elongation relation is a unique constitutive relation for the adhesive layer. No dependence on the specimen geometry has been detected provided that the adherends only deform elastically. If the adherends are allowed to deform plastically the fracture energy increases and the stress – elongation relation from the elastically deforming tests cannot be used to simulate the structural behaviour. This is interpreted as an effect of a substantially shorter damage zone with the plastically deforming adherends. An evaluation of effects of the loading rate is also performed. This shows that the fracture energy increases with the loading rate. A number of standardized methods are available to evaluate the fracture properties of adhesives from experiments on the DCB-specimen. Furthermore, alternative methods have recently been suggested by Tamuzs et al. (2003). In an effort to examine the accuracy of the alternative methods, FE-simulations are performed and evaluated according to the alternative methods. The simulations are based on the stress – elongation relation evaluated from the present experiments. Large differences between the correct and the evaluated fracture energies are found for most of the methods. Two of the methods show good accuracy and appear particularly promising. Stress whitening is used to evaluate the length of the damage zone. This length compares reasonably well with the length evaluated from FE-simulations of the experiments.

Adhesive Tapes; Cohesive Laws for a Soft Layer2014Ingår i: Procedia Materials Science, ISSN 2211-8128, Vol. 3, s. 1389-1393Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

For adhesive tapes, the strain before fracture often exceeds 500%. Although the maximum stresses are quite modest the high strains to fracture result in impressive fracture energy. Due to hydrostatic stress the fracture process often starts by nucleation of microscopic cracks inside the layer. The final crack path is usually close to one of the adherends.

Repeated experiments are performed both with DCB-specimens and butt-joints. The used adhesive tape is an acrylic foam tape with a thickness of 1.1 mm and a width of 19 mm. The geometry of the specimen is adapted to the properties of the soft layer. For the DCB-specimen this implies that the length of the specimen is about 1 m. The evaluated cohesive laws from the DCB- specimens give a fracture energy of 2 kN/m and a maximum stress about 0.5 MPa. For the butt-joints, the evaluated cohesive law corresponds well to the results from the DCB-experiments. However, the strain to fracture is slightly smaller. The stress in these specimens is distributed over a larger area and a nucleated crack rapidly crosses the load bearing area and fails the joint prematurely. For both kinds of experiments the evaluated cohesive laws show a small linear part. After this part there is an almost linear strain-hardening phase until fracture.

Cohesive zone modelling of nucleation, growth and coalesce of cavities2017Ingår i: International Journal of Fracture, ISSN 0376-9429, E-ISSN 1573-2673, Vol. 204, nr 2, s. 159-174Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The stress-deformation relation i.e. cohesive law representing the fracture process in an almost incompressible adhesive tape is measured using the double cantilever beam specimen. As in many ductile materials, the fracture process of the tape involves nucleation, growth and coalesce of cavities. This process is studied carefully by exploiting the transparency of the used materials and the inherent stability of the specimen configuration. Utilising the path independence of the J -integral, the cohesive law is measured. The law is compared to the results of butt-joint tests. The law contains two stress peaks—the first is associated with nucleation of cavities at a stress level conforming to predictions of void nucleation in rubber elasticity. The second stress peak is associated with fracture of stretched walls between fully-grown cavities. After this second peak, a macroscopic crack is formed. The tape suffers at this stage an engineering strain of about 800%. A numerical analysis with the determined cohesive law recreates the global specimen behaviour.

Comparison of J-integral methods to experimentally determine cohesive laws in shear for adhesives2019Ingår i: International Journal of Adhesion and Adhesives, ISSN 0143-7496, E-ISSN 1879-0127, Vol. 94, s. 64-75Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

High-quality simulation methods demand accurate material models. In simulations an adhesive can be represented by a cohesive layer. A cohesive layer model utilizes a cohesive law to represent the homogenized mechanical behaviour of a layer with a thickness. In the current paper we use three experimental methods to measure the cohesive law in shear using the ENF-specimen; one of the methods is novel and is also useful for evaluation of experiments with the ELS-specimen. Two sets of experiments are performed, one with elastic substrates and one with plastically deforming substrates. Each experiment is evaluated using all three methods. The evaluation shows that all methods provide reasonable data; the results are similar if the substrates are elastic. With smaller specimens, the substrates deform plastically and one of the methods is identified as the most accurate.

Strength and toughness in shear of constrained layers2018Ingår i: International Journal of Solids and Structures, ISSN 0020-7683, E-ISSN 1879-2146, Vol. 138, s. 50-63Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Confined layers may fracture in shear. This occurs, for example in adhesive joints and composite materials. A common mechanism for shear fracture is the formation of shear hackles associated with an expansion of the layer. This makes shear toughness and strength depend on the constraint of the expansion. By constraining the expansion using external loading in experiments, the expansion is reduced but not totally inhibited. The experiments are evaluated using the path independent properties of the J-integral. It is shown that the shear toughness increases for the more constrained case. Thus, from a strength analysis perspective, ignoring the expansion leads to a conservative estimate of the fracture properties. Extrapolation of the evaluated properties to totally inhibited expansions gives the traction separation relation and the fracture toughness for a layer in simple shear.

A Critical Study of an Alternative Method to Measure Cohesive Properties of Adhesive Layers2012Ingår i: Proceedings of the 19th European Conference on Fracture, Kazan Scientific Centre of the Russian Academy of Sciences , 2012Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

A perfect experiment is only sensitive to the properties to be analysed. However, evaluation of experimental results is always based on assumptions. Depending on the assumptions, the derived results are more or less correct. In this paper a method based on linear elastic fracture mechanics is compared to a method based on the path independence of the J-integral and the assumptions of the existence of a cohesive zone. Contrary to the other methods, the J-integral method only rests on the assumption that the material of the specimen has a strain energy density that not explicitly depends on the position in the direction of crack propagation. That is, the conditions for J to be path independent. Evaluation of simulated experiments gives the exact value of the fracture energy. The alternative method is based on linear elastic fracture mechanics. Contrary to the conventional methods we use an expression where the crack length is eliminated in favour of the flexibility of the specimen.

Influences of assumptions are studied both experimentally and numerically. Differences in stiffness are achieved by changing the type of adhesive and the layer thickness. Two different adhesives are studied. One is a modern crash resistant epoxy adhesive, SikaPower-498. This is a relatively stiff and tough adhesive. The other adhesive is a soft and extremely tough polyurethane based adhesive, Sikaflex-UHM. Two layer thicknesses are tested; 1.0 mm for the epoxy and 3.0 mm for the polyurethane based adhesive. The results show that the two methods give similar results for the thinner and stiffer epoxy adhesive but differences are recorded for the soft polyurethane based adhesive. This analysis gives a better understanding of the evaluation methods and their limitations and possibilities to extract cohesive laws.

Influence of Edge-boundaries on the Cohesive Behaviour of an Adhesive Layer2012Ingår i: ASME 2012 International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition, November 9–15, 2012, Houston, Texas, USA: Volume 8: Mechanics of Solids, Structures and Fluids, ASME Press, 2012, s. 507-511, artikel-id IMECE2012-89534Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

In comparison with other adhesives e.g. epoxies, polyurethane adhesives (PUR) are soft. In automotive applications, the thickness of PUR-adhesive layers is between about 2 to 5 mm. Since these adhesives cure by moisture, the width of the joints is limited. Often, the width is only marginally larger than the thickness of the layer. In numerical FE-simulations it is now common to represent epoxy adhesive layers by cohesive elements. With this model, both stress distribution and fracture can be modelled using mesh sizes that allows for large-scale analyses. Material properties are usually the result from experiments with coupon type specimens, e.g. the double cantilever beam specimen (DCB). With PUR-adhesives this approach is problematic. The adhesive is very flexible and effects from the edge-boundaries cannot be ignored. In order to study the influence of the edge-boundaries in peel loading, experiments with the DCB-specimens are performed. Specimens with a layer thickness of 3 mm and three different widths between 10.6 mm to 40.6 mm are studied. The PUR-adhesive SikaFlex-UHM is used. All the experiments are performed at a constant loading rate. The cohesive law is measured. The experimental results show that the maximum peel stress is increasing with an increasing width of the specimen, i.e. when the influences from the edges decrease. When the width increases from 10.6 mm to 40.6 mm, the maximum evaluated peak stress increases from about 5 MPa to about 7 MPa. From visual inspections during the experiments it is conjectured that crack growth starts with voids initiating inside the adhesive. At a critical point, the voids rapidly reach the surface and crack growth starts.

Production improvement using Discrete Event Simulation: case study of Volvo Penta engine production line2022Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 20 poäng / 30 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

The global market forces manufacturers to minimise costs, meet production schedules, and improve productivity to stay competitive. The produced products require higher customisations, which are affecting the complexity of the production system. Companies seeking methods and tools to improve their production system. One of these is Discrete Event Simulation (DES), which can be used to analyse the production system without affecting the real system. The limitations of the systems, are often known as bottlenecks. The bottleneck limits the performance of the production system to reach its maximum efficiency. This study, investigates the use of simulation in manual assembly lines, at Volvo Penta in Vara. The production system produces over 300 variants of engines, divided into three product families. The addressed problem, is that manual work and difference in processing times for each variant cause variation, which in turn, leads to bottlenecks. The required data was collected at the company and a simulation model was developed. During the analysis of the current state model, the main bottleneck of the system was found, by analysing buffer allocation-, utilisation-, and shifting bottleneck detection charts.

Based on the analysis, three scenarios were developed to minimise the waiting portion of the bottleneck of the system. In the third scenario, one operator was allocated to the bottleneck, which in turn, eliminated the waiting potion. Additional four scenarios were developed with the objective to increase the throughput (TH) of the system. However, the bottleneck moved after each additional scenario. Based on the analysis of the performed scenarios, three proposed improvements were identified. The first improvement was to reschedule one engine family from the production line. The second, was to dedicate one operator directly to the bottleneck and finally, the third, prioritise and relocate operators to certain areas in the production line. In conclusion, simulation can be used to analyse manual production lines. However, simulating variation caused by manual work, requires a high amount of data. Furthermore, the combination of the proposed improvements has increased the TH of the system by 12 %, in comparison to the current state results and similarly used existing resources.

    Abstract [sv]

Trial and error fastställde hur komponenterna kunde ligga i materialfasaden och vilka faktorersom påverkade utfallet.

    Computer-based protocol for human simulation report2003Ingår i: Proceedings of IEA 2003, 2003, s. 30-33Konferensbidrag (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of the present case study is to present and evaluate a computer-based standardized procedure to order, perform and document virtual ergonomic analyses. Results showed that the use of the new working methodology increased the number of factors considered during analysis. Participants indicated that the proposed methodology, including task analysis and use of manikin families, would increase the reliability of the results. The increase in numbers of factors considered during analysis and the improved reliability of the results is also likely to reduce the number of iterations needed in the design process to make products meet established requirements, therefore reducing total development time.

Simulation of human-vehicle interaction in vehicle design at Saab Automobile: present and future2003Ingår i: Digital Human Modeling for Design and Engineering (DHM) SAE-conference, SAE International , 2003Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Developers, reviewers and users of human simulation tools claim that the use of these tools may reduce development time and development cost. However, before these benefits will be fully visible, there are some barriers to overcome. The aims of this case study are to identify which departments at Saab Automobile use some sort of human simulation tool today, and to identify the information flow and procedure when the tool is used. Four departments crash safety, packaging, production planning and vehicle ergonomics were identified as direct users of human simulation tools. The tools used were finite element with crash dummy representation, SAE human model, Safework and Ramsis. Communications between human simulation tool users are limited. Communications are done through the project management. The crash safety and packaging departments have formal descriptions of the human simulation process, whereas production planning and vehicle ergonomics have no formal process descriptions. To gain from the benefits of human simulation tools, Saab Automobile needs to adapt them to the organization and the organization to the tools. Integration of a working methodology is essential for effective and efficient use in the other human simulation departments where this is currently lacking.

Visualisation of Human Characteristics in Vehicle and Health Care Product Development2007Ingår i: SIGRAD 2007 Conference Proceedings: The Annual SIGRAD Conference, Special Theme: Computer Graphics in Healthcare, November 29–30, 2007, Uppsala, Sweden / [ed] Anders Hast, Linköping: Linköping University Electronic Press, 2007, s. 31-34Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the research project described in this paper is to improve the efficiency of product development processes by exchanging knowledge and experiences about user centred design methods and technologies between the two branches: vehicle and health care industries. The health care industry can benefit from visualisation and simulation tools that include computer manikins, a physical representation of the human, and the vehicle industry can benefit from manikins having personal characteristics, which has proven to be successful in the health care industry.
