The relationship between employee well-being and firm performance: A resource-based analysis2012In: Proceedings of the 12th Annual Hawaii International Conference on Business, Hawaii International Conference on Business , 2012, p. 719-724Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Enhancing the wellbeing of employees is a key feature of human resource management (HRM) and numerous HRM-practices to strengthen the wellbeing of co-workers have been developed. Although the benefits for the employees of such practices are obvious, the relationship between employee wellbeing and firm performance is unclear. In order to strengthen this relationship some studies have extended the concept of firm performance by including additional "soft" dimensions of performance. However, investing in wellbeing is, of course, associated with costs and several scholars argue that investments in the wellbeing of employees can be regarded as any other investment and from an owner's perspective it is essential to get a return on the investment. In the field of strategic HRM (SHRM), some attempts have been made to analyze the relationship between wellbeing, firm resources and firm performance. Most studies have, however, focused on the relationship between specific HRM-activities and firm performance or certain aspects of resource features. For example, how the wellbeing of employees can enhance the retention of human resources or how wellbeing can stimulate intrapreneurship and thereby generate short-term increases in profits. Thus, few studies have analysed the relationship between wellbeing, competetive advantages and performance from a holistic approach. Consequently, in this paper we present a resource-based analysis of the relationship between the wellbeing of employees and firm performance. We present three propositions regarding the relationship between wellbeing, resources and firm performance. These propositions illustrate the complexity of the relationship by discussing why wellbeing can enhance as well as reduce firm performance.

Can environmentally oriented CEOs and environmentally friendly suppliers boost the growth of small firms?2020In: Business Strategy and the Environment, ISSN 0964-4733, E-ISSN 1099-0836, Vol. 29, no 2, p. 325-334Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The core question addressed in the natural resource‐based view (NRBV) of the firm is how to develop and exploit resources beneficial for both the natural environment and firm performance. Due to the resource constraints and increased competition facing small manufacturing firms, achieving this is a challenge for such companies. Building on the NRBV and resource orchestration literatures, we examine the relationship between green purchasing capabilities (GPCs), CEO's environmental orientation(EO), and firm growth. Results from 304 Swedish small manufacturing firms indicate a significant relationship between GPC and growth, and this relationship is positively moderated by the EO of the CEO.

Resource immobility and sustained performance: A systematic assessment of how immobility has been considered in empirical resource-based studies2016In: International journal of management reviews (Print), ISSN 1460-8545, E-ISSN 1468-2370, Vol. 18, no 4, p. 371-396Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The core notion of the resource-based view (RBV) is that the possession of certain resources can result in superior performance and, in order for this performance to be sustained, these resources cannot be perfectly mobile. Whereas previous reviews have mainly focused on the relationship between resources and temporary performance, no studies have systematically analyzed the extent to which empirical RBV studies have specifically considered immobility of resources. By analyzing a sample of 218 empirical RBV studies, the authors found that 17% of the studies directly measured some dimension of immobility (by, for example, actually measuring the level of social complexity, unique history, tacitness or tradability). Fewer than 2% of the studies measured the outcome of resource immobility, i.e. sustained performance differences. Based on these results, this paper discusses the consequences of overlooking this key dimension of the RBV (i.e. immobility) and suggests that, and discusses how, future research should consider resource immobility to a greater extent.

Asymmetrically realized absorptive capacity and relationship durability2012In: Management Decision, ISSN 0025-1747, E-ISSN 1758-6070, Vol. 50, no 1, p. 43-57Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose – Absorbing knowledge from partner firms is a key feature of marketing relationships. Recent publications have called for more dynamic and cognitive approaches in marketing relationship research. Also, established definitions of absorptive capacities have been questioned. This article aims to address propositions that take these overlooked and questioned elements into consideration, which can help explain conducts and dependencies, and affect relationship durability.

Design/methodology/approach – The authors put forward four propositions by combining literature on interfirm relationships and managerial cognition with evolutionary ideas from marketing and management literature.

Findings – The authors embrace a redefinition of potential absorptive capacity (the disposed capacity to absorb knowledge) and realized absorptive capacity (the absorption of knowledge actually performed). This distinction can, to some extent, be explained by the degree of cognitive attention given to the marketing relationship. Moreover, asymmetrically realized absorptive capacityvis-à-vis a partner substantially influences the dynamics of partners' conduct and dependency, which may vary the risk that the relationship will end.

Practical implications – The propositions illustrate how a motivated partner that gives more attention to the relationship is more likely to absorb more knowledge than its counterpart, which can threaten the durability of a relationship. Thus, managers need to be able to understand possible long-term consequences of the partner's conduct in order to avoid losses of joint strategic resources and relational benefits.

Originality/value – By advocating an evolutionary approach, an impetus for more dynamism in marketing relationship research is presented. This study also shows the importance of including the longitudinal dimension in analysis if one wants to understand change in – and durability of – marketing relationships.

Entrepreneurially oriented in what? A business model approach to entrepreneurship2015In: Journal of Small Business and Enterprise Development, ISSN 1462-6004, E-ISSN 1758-7840, Vol. 22, no 3, p. 433-449Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to illustrate and argue for the necessity of deconstructing the entrepreneurship concept by analyzing entrepreneurial orientation (EO) at various levels of the business model.

Design/methodology/approach – Literature review supplemented with five illustrative cases.

Findings – A business model approach to entrepreneurship enables identification of the component of the business model in which entrepreneurship was started. This has several implications for analysis of the EO-performance relationship and for the identification of antecedents to EO.

Originality/value – The EO of firms has generally been analyzed at a generic level, i.e. the concept has been used to measure and analyze the overall entrepreneurship of firms. In this paper, the authors argue that EO can be present in various dimensions of a business and that firms can be entrepreneurial in certain areas and conservative in other areas.

Resource organization and firm performance: How entrepreneurial orientation and management accounting influence the profitability of growing and non-growing SMEs2016In: International Journal of Entrepreneurial Behaviour & Research, ISSN 1355-2554, E-ISSN 1758-6534, Vol. 22, no 4, p. 466-484Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

    Purpose

The aim of this study is to examine how entrepreneurial orientation (EO) and the use of management accounting practices (MAPs) in decision making affects the profitability of SMEs, and also to analyze the extent to which EO and the use of MAPs affects profitability differently in growing and non-growing SMEs.

    Design/methodology/approach

The paper employs an empirical investigation which is based on a sample of 153 Swedish manufacturing SMEs. The data is analyzed by two- and three way interaction regressions.

    Findings

EO and MAPs have a positive effect on profitability in non-growing SMEs, but the combined effect of EO and MAPs has no additional effect. However, for growing SMEs, high usage of MAPs in decision making is a prerequisite for EO to influence profitability.

    Originality/value

This study is the first to use the resource-based view to examine the relationship between two dimensions of resource organization and SME profitability. Entrepreneurial orientation (EO) is used as a proxy for how resources are organized in order to identify opportunities, and management accounting practices (MAPs) are used as a proxy for how efficiently resources are organized.

Hantering av försörjningsrisker: En intervjustudie på tre svenska företag2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Today's Supply chain is expanding at a higher rate than before and can cover many different continents, which means that organizations are exposing themselves to a high variety of risks. An area that gets affected a lot by this trend is the organizations sourcing departments, which gets more complex the bigger it gets. It becomes harder to identify uncertainties and risks that can come to affect the inbound flow of goods and services. Studies around the subject risk management focus mostly on all kinds of risks that can come to affect a company and its supply chain. This is what makes this study relevant because it specifies around managing supply risks and how it is archived by Swedish companies. The purpose of this study is to create an understanding of what can come to affect the inbound flow of goods and services and what kind of approaches the studied companies can have to avoid or mitigate different kinds of supply risks. To fulfill this study's purpose, the purpose has been broken down into two questions and will be answered from both a theoretical and company point of view.

The empirical part of this study consists of three interviews with three different companies and the information that have been collected by these three interviews has then later been analyzed and connected with earlier theory. This has then laid the foundation for the study's findings. One finding that has been made is that different kinds of sourcing strategies create different kinds of supply risks, which leads to that companies needs to customize their risk management activities after their sourcing strategies.

The study's findings can help companies get a greater understanding of different factors that may affect their sourcing and also what you should keep in mind when formulating a risk management strategy.

Employer branding för att attrahera och rekrytera talangfull personal: En studie om hur organisationer kan använda Employer branding för att attrahera och rekrytera talangfull personal2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Background: The struggle for talents is a problem that can exist in a labour market. Organizations must differentiate themselves to compete for talent. To attracting and recruiting has become a more important dilemma for organizations. The organization wants to attract and recruit the talents to its organization, since this means market benefits and that the organization can be more attractive. Therefore, it is important to highlight why and to understand how organizations can use Employer branding to attract and recruit talented staff.

Purpose: The purpose is to investigate how organizations use Employer branding to recruit talented staff and thereby explain the connection between studies and business.

Method: In order to be able to answer the purpose of the report, a qualitative study with six interviews was conducted with managers at each organization. The interviews were conducted to gain a deeper understanding of how Employer branding can be used by organizations. In addition to interviews, observations were performed on the organisation's social media to investigate how this corresponds to what has been said in the interviews. The respondents were selected based on their relevant professional role in each organization, which is considered to have knowledge and experience within Employer branding and recruitment.

Result/Conclusion: The study has concluded that the organizations find it difficult to define talent. The organizations that has been interviewed to the study agreed that talent was important with talented staff. Organizations can use Employer branding as a marketing strategy to attract and recruit talented workers to their organization. To use Employer branding organizations can work with four components: organizational attributes, promotion & communication channels, formation of employer image and employer attractiveness. The study organizations are positive towards the components and use them to a large extent. The organizations use marketing and communication channels to showcase their brand, which candidates they are looking for and what is important with the service. All organizations also think it is important to have a good image because it shows that organizations can be attractive in the future. The organizations members try to perform well in the organizations interests outside the workplace. Employer branding can thus be used as a strategy to reach out to talents in a labour market.

Finansiell utveckling efter equity crowdfunding2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Crowdfunding refers to the endeavors of companies raising capital from the public via the internet. There are different types of crowdfundig, and this study focuses on equity crowdfunding, which means that investors receive equity in the form of company shares in exchange for investing in the company. We have analyzed 24 companies post funding through equity crowdfunding via the crowdfunding platform FundedByMe. The results of the study show that 19 of the companies survived. These 19 companies make up all of the study's observations. Through the testing of two hypotheses where different factors concerning the raising of capital are put in relation to the financial growth of the companies, results show that no relationship between number of investors and sales growth exist, nor does any relationship between profit growth and portion of company stock issued to external stakeholders through the equity crowdfunding campaign exist. These results are conflicting with previous studies that have shown that such relationships exist. This could possibly be due to the study's limited sampling size, which could be an explanation as to why no statistical significance for the testing of the hypotheses was found in most cases. The number of investors for each company in this study ranged between 19 and 398. Due to the fact that previous research has shown a positive relationship between number of investors and sales growth, it is a reasonable assumption that tendencies towards this relationship are to be found in this study as well. Instead, the development of sales growth tends to be rather random and fluctuating. This is also true for profit growth, except for two years after the raising of capital, where a positive and statistically significant relationship between profit growth and portion of company stock issued to external stakeholders can be found. The results are analyzed based on the theory of behavioral finance and herding.

Marknadsföringsetik: Unga konsumenters reaktioner på könsdiskriminerande marknadsföring2011Independent thesis Basic level (university diploma), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Background: Due to the development of the information and communication technology the boundaries of where and when to carry out your work have faded. In other words, the work has become boundless. Although this allows for flexibility over working hours, place of work and increased control over your work it can also lead to overload and work related stress, which can have a negative impact on work life balance and therefore health. Also, in the long run it can adversely affect the organization as it can lead to reduced productivity, sickness absence and staff turnover, which is associated with greater costs. As a teacher at the academy there are far reaching opportunities to extend the workplace’s hours and location due to the prevalence of information and communication technology, where this study examines the experiences university lecturers have of the boundless work and its impact on health.

Aim: The aim of the present study is to investigate university teachers' experiences of the boundless work within the academy to increase understanding of how boundless work can affect health and thereby increasing understanding of how it may be a health factor or risk factor.

Method: As the present study aimed at capturing individual peoples’ experiences, thoughts and descriptions regarding their work situation with boundless work in a nuanced manner, a qualitative method was chosen. The gathering of empirical data was done through ten individual semi- structured interviews at a university in Sweden.

Conclusion: The study's results indicate that social support is important in boundless work and can, among other things, help stressful periods to be perceived as less demanding. Continuously being available, however, can affect health negatively, with the perceived stress that comes with availability via email. Furthermore, the result suggests that self-control and freedom at work can be both a risk and a healthy factor depending on how boundaries occur to the rest of life, which may depend on the individual's own requirements and career prospects, as well as the joy of his work. This means that the individual’s ability to create boundaries between work and private life is fundamental in a boundless work.

    Abstract [en]

Customer service is an important factor in today´s society and has become a way to differentiate themselves from their competitors in the market. The staff’s treatment against the customer has a big significance if the customer experience from the visit is positive or negative. The acting from the staff against the customer can have the decisive role if the customers choose to come back to the store or not.

The purpose of this report is to see how the customer wants the staff to treat them in a fashion store. There are a lot of studies that process how the staff should act against the customers, but less studies that declares how the customers want the staff to treat them in a store. The report will also illustrate if there is any differences how the customers want to be treated depending on the stores price.

The study was based on a quantitative method as a survey. The survey was conducted by the survey tool Enalyzer through the social network Facebook and outside the two chosen fashion stores, MQ and Gina Tricot. 124 female respondents in different ages participated in the study.

The result of this study showed that the staff’s attitude towards the customers plays a significant role for the respondents. The result also illustrates that there are both similarities and differences in the way the customers want to be treated by the staff in both stores. The similarities are that it was important for the respondents, irrespective in what store, to be greeted by the staff with a hello. It is clear that a smile and eye contact from the staff had the same significance in both stores. The differences that appeared concerned what attitudes the respondents value the most from the staff in MQ and Gina Tricot. In MQ the respondents value knowledge the most and in Gina Tricot the most preferred attitude from the staff is to be happy.

Hållbarhetsredovisning i kommuner: En studie som jämför kommuner i Västra Götaland2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Today, more and more companies and organizations are working on CSR activities because it is something the public demands more and more that companies and organizations should take environmental and community considerations into account. Municipal operations differ from companies and have no compulsory law to establish a sustainability report. Because sustainability reports are more applicable to companies, it will be difficult for municipalities to introduce this. The municipalities have different interest groups to consider where the two most important are politicians and residents. Due to the existence of information asymmetry between municipalities and their stakeholders, they have an obligation to provide information to reduce this.

The study aims to investigate municipalities in Västra Götaland to see how they work with sustainability reporting and whether they only report the economic aspect or the environmental and social aspects of Tripel Bottom Line. The aim is also to look at which stakeholders the sustainability report is aimed at, but also to contribute to a greater understanding of sustainability reporting in municipal operations.

The implementation of the study has been done through qualitative interviews where six municipalities have been interviewed and a total of nine informants have contributed with information to answer the purpose of the study. The obtained empirical material has come up with an analysis that is in relation to the theoretical frame of reference, which in turn has led to the conclusion. The study has concluded that municipalities act differently when they follow up and analyze their results, but that they are all based on the social, environmental and economic dimensions. However, there are difficulties when municipalities are to analyze their key figures to see, for example, increased sickness absence due to the absence of a general approach for municipalities to use. The study also found that a municipality has a wide range of stakeholders but that these stakeholders are valued differently.

Hur uppfattar entreprenören professionalisering av management?: En studie om förstagångsentreprenören ur ett psykologiskt perspektiv2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Introduction: A big part of the Swedish economy rests on the shoulders of the Swedish bank sector. Because of the increasing digitalization in recent times, the difference in competition has become substantially more evident and it has received a completely new starting point compared to before. The newest and most recent additions to the competition within the banking sector are examples such as FinTech companies, international banks and other parties that are also starting to compete with the big Swedish banks for market shares.

Purpose and problem formulation: The purpose of this study is to describe the way the big Swedish banks and FinTech companies perceive the different opportunities and threats related to the increased digitalization that we see today. This will allow us to try and create an understanding of what the future might look like and what has already changed within the banking sector ever since the introduction of digitalization. How do the big Swedish banks and FinTech companies perceive the different opportunities and threats related to the increased digitalization?

Theoretical frame of reference: The theories that have been used during the study are isomorphism with the notion of compelling, imitating and normative isomorphism as well as Porter's strategy theory, the five force model. A SWOT analysis has been used to more easily identify the banks' strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats during the digitization. The study has also used previous research and taken into account the quest for legitimacy and demands for cost efficiency. This has become a support for the empirical results that have been collected in order to be able to analyze more easily, reach a conclusion and thus get the problem formulation answered.

Method: The empirical material has been collected with a qualitative method. 5 informants have participated in semi-structured interviews.

Conclusion: The authors of the study have identified, described and explained several factors as to how they perceive opportunities and threats during the increasing digitization. The informants shared both opportunities and threats, such as the fact that the PSD2 regulations increase competition and improve the situation for smaller players to compete against the big banks. The study has also been limited to big Swedish banks and FinTech companies.

    Abstract [en]

Large retail chains use visual merchandising to create their windows displays. They based their studies on research and conceptual literature that establish the rules and guidelines for how a storefront should be designed in an attractive and effective way to attract attention and convey the store's image. This report examines the importance and use of this type of literature and theories of the smaller privately owned stores. The guidelines for this report are based on the question: In what way is the design of the windows display regarding smaller stores different from the theory?

The repeating pattern of the authors of the literature is about color, light, clustering, minds, and shop window primary attributes. These theories are focusing on creating a well structured and well planned exposure for contributing to store profitability in the best way.

From the scientific and relevant literature has the material to the interviews being created. The interviews were conducted with selected respondents for the subject, four in number, which participated on a voluntary basis. The result shows that there are many differences between theory and practice of the smaller stores. The smaller stores use their own taste and liking, and find their inspiration from sources other than the used literature.

In addition to the differences between theory and practice is the report aiming to find the characteristics of smaller stores designing windows compared with retail chains. Knowledge and awareness is a relevant question regarding the staff and shopowner to the smaller stores, which this repport also is aiming to investigate.

    Abstract [en]

To make visible information at all stages of the process from beginning to end at the company allows the discovery of errors at the early stage of process, and at the same time allows the fact that information been addressed in a timely and efficient manner. It is therefore Pearlson & Saunders (2010) argue that information systems are based on three fundamental pillars: technology, people and process. Without the interaction of these pillars, it is difficult or impossible to succeed in implementing any form of database. The flow of materials and information must go hand in hand with each other to improve production efficiency. It is, therefore, Mattsson (2010) argues that an efficient material flow utilizing resources efficiently create condition of satisfying customer’s demand in good ways. To achieve this goal, it requires for the company to create conditions to report errors in the early stages of the process as soon as possible. This avoids unnecessary work that customers are not prepared to pay for. That's why Alter (2006) points out that the conditions for an increase in efficiency in business can only be reached if there is a clear link between information, technology, users and information management activities. Today IT, Information technology is one of effective tools which enable implementation of the common database within the same organization. The database aims to coordinate and streamline the flow of both materials and information at the company. The common database creates the potential for a complete, time-date and accurate information shared within the company among various departments. These in turn create conditions for the efficient production that leads to profitability.

"Det är någonting med limhallen": utvecklingen mot ett gott medarbetarskap i en god arbetsmiljö2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Every day customers are exposed to a large quantity of publicity of different kinds. Big amounts are put every year in publicity and the competition among the companies to be shown on the market is getting harder and harder. It is important for companies to understand the buying behaviour of the customer and since most of the decisions are made in the store, many companies make efforts to influence the customers and their decisions in the store.

The problem formulation in this case study is: What does a grocer store do to influence the customer’s buying behaviour?

The purpose of this essay is to identify and deepen our understanding of what factors that influence the customer’s buying decisions and what methods a grocer’s store use. The thesis is based on a case study and interviews have been done with two persons at PA:s Kvantum in Falköping.

The theory starts from a model of buying behaviour by Kotler (2006) that has been adapted to fit our research problem and purpose. We have focused on the part of the model that deals with marketing stimuli, and includes product, price, place and promotion. On top of this, two P:s have been added, i.e. personnel and physical evidence.

The results from the study show that the store in our case uses all of the P:s to influence the customer’s decisions in the store. It is not possible to distinguish any P that has greater importance than another in the work with controlling the buying behaviour of the customer; they are all used parallel and consociate to achieve as big effect as possible.

If a company successfully identifies the factors that influence a customer’s buying behaviour, the marketing measures can be optimized and adjusted to the current market; with the hope of a better result.

Faktorer som påverkar beslutsprocessen vid etiska/gröna värdepappersinvesteringar: En komparativ studie av privat och allmännyttigt bolag2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The intention of this study is to investigate men's growing interest regarding shopping of clothes. In this study,it is reflected on the fact that there is a lack in valid range for men at discount stores. It was pointed out in the study that men found it difficult to find clothes without going up in price classes. The focus has been on whether there really is an increased interest from men regarding clothes and how stores respond to this. The theory we have used, have pointed out that this interest has increased and that the gender roles of men and women who have always been so obvious, is not as strong today. It also points out that retailers need to understand thei rcustomers and the fact that men and women are very different in their ways and values. We have used a qualitative and quantitative survey in the form ofa questionnaire for men aged 15 -35 as well as interviews with various stores. The essay has led us into a potential audience that stores in several cases have failed to reach at some degree.Through this we have gained more knowledge about why the selection to men is not so great and that men generally lack garments in low prices. The results we have arrived at are a confirmation o fwhat we already speculated in, that many of the respondents felt that there exist a lack of clothing in the low class of acceptable quality and design.

    Abstract [en]

This brief inventory and analysis of the state of Swedish, Danish and Norwegian game development aim to highlight past and current trends within the regions’ industries and supporting structures. In a short period of time, the situation for game developers has been severely altered as a result of the closure of big players and the rapid evolution of the marketplace. The industry in each country has been able to adapt to these changes well, and we’ve seen a dramatic industry expansion in the past couple of years as the main turbulence has subsided and new companies are given space and opportunity to establish themselves.

    Abstract [en]

BackgroundIn the last couple of years there has been an ongoing change in the Swedish labor marketwhere the view and the occurrence of long term employment is not as common as it oncewas. The most common way of career development is through change of employer. The costof employee turnover can be avoided or reduced by keeping current employees and anindividually shaped development for the employee may result in the employee staying loyalto the company.

PurposeThe purpose of this study is to investigate how attractive employers, based on Randstad andUniversum, within a knowledge based environment in the area of Gothenburg providescompetence development, professional development and career opportunities in order toretain their employees.

Method The study applies a qualitative research approach since the purpose of the study is to gain understanding in how companies provide development and not to compare different companies’ results to one another. The study is based on six semi-structured interviews held at each of the six companies. The selection of companies is based on the lists “Randstad Award 2016” and “Sveriges bästa arbetsgivare 2016” by Universum which are summaries of Sweden’s most attractive employers of the year 2016.

Conclusion The study shows that all of the companies have an individually shaped development plan for the employee. This is managed through adjustment of duties, competence development through courses, seminars and workshops which are based on internal knowledge within the company. Last but not least development is supplied through the use of mentoring and networking, both internal and external.

Kan man skapa en världsportfölj baserad på inhemska aktier2007Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The background to this study is the increasing sick leave in Sweden due to mental illness. The problem derives from issues related to work environment and the fact that work-related stress causes more than 50 per cent of all sick leave in the European Union. Stress is not only an individual health problem but also an economic burden to society. Increased workload and stress haves been observed to be main reasons behind sick leave in the health- and social sector.

This study examines nurses’ experiences in old age care. The focus is on demand, control and support in relation to psychosocial work environment and stress. The analysis draws on the model made by Karasek and Theorell (1990). The examination was performed on a municipality in Västra Götaland. A quantitative method based on questionnaires has been used to collect data.

The empirical result shows that nurses experience high demands, low control and high social support. The nurses experience high strain which is mentally exhausting for the individual who cannot encounter the high demands because of the low acting space.

The finding of high social support however separates from several previous studies and has led to the conclusion that social support cannot be analyzed detached from the other factors if the aim is to understand the full context of a work situation. Previous research has proved that social support works as an insurance against work-related stress; this study presents that work-related stress can arise regardless of nurses’ experience of high social support. Therefore the study demonstrates that a combination of demand, control and support is essential to the understanding of an organization’s psychosocial work environment.

Butiksatmosfären och kundens uppfattning2008Independent thesis Basic level (university diploma), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Goodwillnedskrivningarnas värderelevans: En studie på den svenska marknaden2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In this study 97 companies from Nasdaq Stockholm´s Large Cap has been examined for the financial years 2016 and 2017. The purpose of the study has been to explain the correlation between goodwill impairment loss and market value for companies on the Swedish market and to analyze and compare the study´s results with previous research that has been found on foreign markets. This means that the value relevance of goodwill impairments has been examined to see if the companies´ market value is affected when goodwill impairment loss is made and if the information affects the investors decision. A model previously used by other researchers has been applied to examine this. The model includes the variables market value, book value, pre-tax profit, carrying value of goodwill and goodwill impairment loss; and information about these has been collected from the companies’ annual reports. The study was done using a multiple regression analysis. The positive correlation between market value and the variables of book value and pre-tax profit means that we could assume that the stock market is value relevant. In order to investigate the value relevance of goodwill impairment loss it was required that reported goodwill was a value relevant variable, which the result showed. A positive correlation could be demonstrated between impairment of goodwill and market capitalization, which indicates that it is not value relevant. This indicates that these impairment losses do not give investors any reliable information in investment decisions.

    Abstract [en]

Background: Sickness absence have long been a central and political societal problem in Sweden. One factor that has caused employee’s ill health is job strain and psychic stress which may be influenced by leadership. There are different leadership styles that managers can apply which have different effects on employee health. These are transformative and transactional leadership styles as well as democratic or relationship-oriented leadership styles and authoritarian or task-oriented leadership styles. Advantageously for employee health is leaders who apply Kaizen as a working method. Kaizen can be described as continuous improvements. Thus, leadership is significant for employees' psychosocial health in the workplace.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to describe and analyze the difference between managers' leadership in departments with high and low sick leave. To answer the purpose, the study is based on theories of leadership styles and the Kaizen method.

Method: To answer the purpose of this study, both managers and employees have given their perspective to the problem. They have participated in the survey through a qualitative and quantitative study with an iterative interaction between deductive and inductive approach. The study has been carried out using a comparative method by studying two comparable departments with reported high or low sickness absence.

Conclusion: The result of this study is that the leadership differs according to the leadership styles applied and to what extent managers work according to Kaizen. Managers with different leadership also have employees with different sickness absence. Thus, manager’s leadership can be important for employees' sickness absence.

ATT MOTIVERA GENERATION Y: En fallstudie baserad på hur chefer inom friskvårdsbranschen kan behålla sina unga medarbetare2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

A workplace that is not considered sufficiently motivating for an individual can lead to an employee voluntary choosing to leave a company, resulting in high unpredictable employee turnover costs and inconvenience for the operation. Therefore, Employee retention is considered to be of great importance. Motivation in work may also be associated with the experience of satisfaction that creates positive working attitudes, this term can be seen to be integrated with the work of retaining employees. However, in order to maintain motivation in work, it is important that managers understands how generation differences can affect the needs of individuals in the workplace. Because young employees, so-called generation Y, are individuals who are more likely to leave a company than previous generations this study has a specific focus on the healthcare industry, which has shown a high number of young employees. The aim of this study was to create an understanding of how managers can work to motivate their employees, belonging to generation Y, in order to keep them in a company within the healthcare industry.

The study takes a starting point in the generation theory of Mannheim (1927) and motivational theories of Maslow (1943) and Vroom (1964), which have worked out as a scientific support in the search for the answer to the study’s problem formulation and questionnaire. In order to find the answer of the founded question a qualitative researching method has been used, with a complementary descriptive element in form of a ranking method. The collection of the empirical data was conducted using a case study against two different healthcare companies and a triangulation method. In total, 13 qualitative interviews were conducted with managers and employees, as well as a qualitative text analysis based on the case materials and policy documents, which together formed a triangulation method.

The result of this study present a difference between what managers believe motivates generation Y and what they are actually motivated by in practice. The motivational factors that was shown distinctive and important for employees belonging to generation Y to stay within the healthcare industry were Personal development, Cohesion and community and Safe employment conditions. However, it should be noted that this result was a generalization of the collected empirical data and does not constitute a presentation of what these employees individually are motivated by. Therefore, it is also considered essential that managers are working to identify the individual’s need of motivation at the workplace.

Hur rättfärdigar multinationella oljeföretag sin oljeutvinning?: En studie om multinationella oljeföretags hållbarhetsrapportering i Afrika2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The oil industry is one of the most controversial industries because it is destroying both immediate environments and large ecosystems. At the same time it is also one of the key industries for the world economy. The companies use sustainability reports to show stakeholders what they are doing to help the environment and society. The African continent is very rich in the natural resource of oil. Many of the oil-exporting countries have been affected by the “resource curse” which means that the countries have not managed to use this resource to develop communities and a better standard of living. For a long time multinational oil companies have made great gains in Africa. Companies must compensate the population for the extraction and the damage done to the environment and communities.

The purpose of this paper is to see what differences and similarities there are in the multinational oil companies’ sustainability reporting in Africa. In order to answer this purpose, the following research questions were asked: what questions do multinational oil companies in Africa focus on? What differences can we identify? And what similarities can we identify?

Using qualitative data analysis we have been able to answer the purpose. This approach has helped us to see what the multinational oil companies focus on in its sustainability reporting. This gives us an understanding of what is important for stakeholders on the continent. In the theoretical framework have theories about CSR been used. Stakeholder Theory has been lifted in to see the interaction between companies and their stakeholders. Legitimacy theory is used to show which indicators companies focus on to create legitimacy.

In the empirical part the study's results are presented by using charts to make it easier to see the differences and similarities that exist among the nine companies that were included in the study. The results were then analysed in order to reach a conclusion. In our study, we concluded that the companies where much involved in local communities. Similarities were seen in investment in infrastructure and jobs to the local population is a high priority among African communities. Differences were seen mainly in the category of human rights, several companies chose not to inform about this. The indicator communication with indigenous people was rare, only 3 companies did this and it was with the Nigerian indigenous people.

Personalrekrytering: Rekryteringsprocessen inom detaljhandeln2007Independent thesis Basic level (university diploma), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Livs- och arbetssituationen: En enkätstudie om upplevd balans2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Background: In recent years, sickness absence has increased in Sweden. Something that also has become noted is how the individual manages to combine their living and working conditions. Living conditions includes everthing that happens outside paid work. Partner, children and the private economy are factors that also are included in the individuals living conditions. With working conditions means everthing that happens at work, but also events related to work. Sickness absence can be seen as a consequence of the fact that the individual is not able to balance their living and working conditions, which in turn may have an impact on the organisation. On this basis this study’s problem area was developed from a perspective that combines sickness absence and the experience of balance, between the two main areas that the individual constantly orients between.

Purpose: The aim of this study is to examine which factors in the lifesituation that is recurring among employees who are experiencing similar degrees of balance between living and working conditons.

Method: The methodology used in this study was a questionnaire, which was analyzed with help of an understanding interpretation. The method was choosen because of the sensitive nature of this subject, but also to keep the respondents anonymous. As mentioned, the subject of sickness absence is interesting to examine in relation to the subject of balance. Therefore the selection of respondents was based on their history of sickness absence, and formed two respondents groups: sickness absence and healthy attendence. This to investigate differences and similarities between the two groups.

Findings: The theories of work-life balance and work-life conflict, which is about how balance and conflicts occurs between individuals living and working conditions, were used to make an understanding interpretation of respondents’ surveys. The study showed no distinctive differences regarding the experience of balance, between the respondents groups.

Vad kännetecknar det vardagsnära ledarskapet?: En observationstudie om butiker inom Svensk detaljhandel2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Lojalitetsprogrammets betydelse: En undersökning kring ett företags lojalitetsarbete2013Independent thesis Basic level (university diploma), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

As consumers get increasingly impact on the market, companies must fight harder to find unique pieces to gain loyal customers, then it costs more to create new customer relationships than to maintain their current. As competition intensifies and it becomes more and more play-ers in the market, companies must fight for customer loyalty, here comes loyalty program and its importance in. The goal of this paper is to see how important a loyalty program can be for a company and compare customer perceptions to the company's own opinion. We have chosen to do a quali-tative study in the shape of an interview with the customer club manager at the company, as well as a quantitative survey in the shape of a survey to loyalty club members, in order to get the best results and to compare but also put these two against each other. When the response rate to the survey was very low, this gives the investigation a low reliability and thus should also be questioning member’s commitment to the club. In terms of results, you can clearly see that there are economic benefits such as discounts that customers demand, something that customer club is already well aware of. However, the re-sults are not consistent with the theory, which says that the non-economic benefits are most important. You can clearly see that the customer perception in comparison with the company match in broad terms. In order to get a higher profitability, the company should focus equally on all segments, something they currently don’t.

Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Background and problem: For a long time, it has been considered that the military service is one of the manliest things that can be done, because that is when "boys become men", and there has been a notion that women do not belong in the military sphere. This is because women were physically weaker and in need of protection from men, which has led to a barrier for women from positioning themselves in the military. The Swedish armed forces are one of Sweden's last male occupational monopolies and was first set aside 1989 and many demands have been made for women to be able to establish themselves in the authority. Historically, the armed forces were perceived to have a "grubby" jargon, women felt they were badly treated by command and sexism was something that seemed to be deeply rooted. Sweden is one of the countries in the world with the highest proportion of women in working life. Despite this, Sweden has one of the most gender-based segregation of the labor market in the world. The Swedish armed forces are currently working on gender equality in the form of action plans for gender mainstreaming and targets for achieving a more balanced gender balance. But only 17 percent of their employees are women, which makes the armed forces one of Sweden's most gender segregated workplaces.

Purpose and method: The purpose of this study was to raise awareness and increase understanding of how socially constructed gender norms are perceived affecting women's opportunities to work, develop their careers and remain in male-dominated organizations, in this case the Swedish armed forces. Nine semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted at Trängregementet where the respondents consisted of both women and men who are officers. In addition to the interviews, several different documents have been examined as the primary basis for the discourse analysis that was carried out in the study. The reviewed documentation and the interviews also appeared as a supplement to each other. The discourse analytical methods used were parts of discourse psychology and Bacchias WPR approach. The interviews and the reviewed documents also form the triangulation of the study in order to obtain a broader perspective and thus the possibility of a deeper, more accurate and complete picture of the armed forces gender equality work.

Results and conclusions: Based on the discourse analysis that was done, it was to be found that the armed forces see the individual as the problem rather than that the organization needs to be addressed. The individual should also form or create the solution. Women have formally good opportunities to make careers in the armed forces. Career development, however, is perceived as too fast so that relevant knowledge and experiences are not obtained to the extent that is felt needed. In addition, women have challenges with their identity development where they are torn between not being too "feminine" but also not to "masculine". Therefore, they feel absence of achieving the expectations that are put on them or they choose to adopt a more "masculine" forms to adapt to the norm. Stereotypes and jargon thus affect women from a negative aspect of their work.

Etiska konsumenter: Gapet mellan intentioner och handlingar2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Consumers’ intentions don’t always result in actions. This study focuses on ethical consumers in order to investigate why a gap between intention and action occur. Based on this an improved understanding for the underlying factors that impact buying behaviour is created. A delimitation has been made to focus this study on retail apparel and ethical and sustainable clothes. Some factors have been seen to be of bigger importance to the gap than others, such as price, lack of information and convenience. The results also imply that there is a missing trust from the consumers’ point of view when it comes to trusting what is communicated about ethical and sustainable work within the clothing industry.

Rekrytera utan fördomar: En kvalitativ studie om hur rekryterare kan hantera svårigheter med omedveten diskriminering2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Background: People is often considered to be the organization's most important resource. For this reason, it is exceedingly important that the right candidate is being hired to the right company. It is not always quite easy to be objective as a recruiter in the choice of candidates. This is based on the fact that we humans may have a difficulty in distinguishing our personal opinions about the candidate from what is actually considered relevant in a recruitment context. People tend to like other people who share similar attitudes, personality traits and economic status as themselves. This in turn may lead recruiters to making hasty conclusions due to preconceptions and unconsciously create prejudices against candidates.

Purpose: The purpose of this qualitative study is therefore to create an understanding of why recruiters have difficulties in making fair assessments of candidates and what they can do to deal with these difficulties in reducing the risk of unconscious discrimination. The reason for choosing this area is that despite the fact that there are research on how prejudices affect the assessment of other people, there are not many studies that highlight this from a recruitment context.

Method: The empirical material of the study has been collected through interviews with recruiters from ten different companies in different industries. Theories and effects have been used in this study for the purpose of analysing interview answers and these are the following: the liking-similarity effect, balance theory, kompetensblomman (the competence flower), the halo effect, the devil effect and the five-factor model of personality.

Conclusion: The results of the study have shown that the different companies make use of prejudices in recruitment unknowingly. It has been shown, among other things, that respondents views on candidates' appearance are a decisive factor in the recruitment process. However, it has also been shown that recruiters can work against prejudice by having clearly structured interview questions, so as not to risk asking irrelevant questions for the work positions concerned. A recruiter can also work against prejudices by having clear demands on the candidates they request. Those candidates who do not meet the requirements will therefore not be able to be called on interview.

Skatteundandraganden i kontantbranschen: En studie om hur Skatteverket upptäcker skatteundandragande och vilka åtgärder de vidtar2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Causal relationship between Foreign Direct Investment and Economic Growth in Turkey2007Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Although there is a considerable evidence on the link between Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and economic growth in developing countries, the causal relationship of these two variables still remains an important question. This study attempts to examine the possible causal relationship between FDI and economic growth in Turkey, during the period 1992 (Quarter 2) – 2006 (Quarter 3). We employed the Johansen Cointegration and Granger Causality tests for detecting the long run or short run causality. Our results showed that there is no long run relationship between the variables, which led us to search the causality in the short run. However we couldn’t find any evidence for a causality running from FDI to economic growth or economic growth to FDI in Turkey.
