    Abstract [en]

Despite the considerable number of studies on workplace identities in the organizational literature, the project management area of research is relatively de-personalized. In seeking to develop this research, this qualitative, longitudinal study of a product development project in the automotive industry focuses on how individuals use the project as a resource for their own identity construction while at the same time the project colonizes their identities. The study reveals that the identity construction processes of the project leaders and of the project are closely intertwined and co-constructed. The project leaders face a paradoxical situation: their identities are colonized, regulated, and controlled by their company (or car, or project), and yet they believe they make their choices voluntarily. However, the core values of projectified society are ‘hidden’ in the identity work that an automobile company consciously uses to develop cars associated with specific emotions and values.

Mechanical Behaviour of Adhesive Layers: Methods to Extract Peel and Mixed Mode Properties2006Doctoral thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Mechanical Behaviour of Adhesive Layers Methods to Extract Peel and Mixed Mode Properties TOBIAS ANDERSSON Department of Applied Mechanics Chalmers University of Technology ABSTRACT This thesis is concerned with methods to extract material properties of thin adhesive layers loaded in peel and in mixed mode. The first part of the thesis is devoted to an experimental method to determine the complete stress-elongation relation (or cohesive law) for an adhesive layer loaded in peel using the DCB-specimen. The method is based on the concept of equilibrium of the energetic forces acting on the specimen. Two sources of energetic forces are identified: the start of the adhesive layer and the positions of the two acting loads. By use of the concept of equilibrium of energetic forces, it is possible to measure the energy release rate of the adhesive layer instantaneously during an experiment. The complete stress-elongation relation is found to be the derivative of the energy release rate with respect to the elongation of the adhesive layer at its start. By this procedure, an effective property of the adhesive layer is measured. The validity of the approach is investigated by experiments where the adherends deform 1) elastically and 2) plastically. It is found that a unique stress-elongation is obtained when the adherends deform elastically. The same relation cannot be used to predict the experiments where the adherends deform plastically indicating that the approach has limited applicability. The second part of the thesis is concerned with the development of a mesomechanical finite element model of a thin adhesive layer loaded in mixed mode. The model is calibrated to previously performed experiments. In these, the adhesive layer is loaded in monotonically increasing peel or shear. An in situ SEM-study is also performed and used to guide the modelling and calibration. The purpose of the mesomechanical finite element model is to facilitate the development of constitutive laws for adhesive layers. The modelling is based on Xu and Needleman’s method where all continuum finite-elements are surrounded by interface elements that allow for the development of micro cracks. Thus, this enables the modelling of the entire process of degradation and fracture of the adhesive layer. A genetic algorithm is developed for the calibration. The simulations are shown to be in reasonably good agreement with the experiments. Keywords: adhesive layer, stress-elongation relation, J-integral, energetic force, experimental method, RVE, interface elements, genetic algorithm

    Abstract [en]

An experimental method to determine the complete stress-elongation relation for a structural adhesive loaded in peel is presented. Experiments are performed on the double cantilever beam specimen, which facilitates a more stable experimental set-up as compared with conventional methods like the butt-joint test. That is, the fields are assumed to be constant through the thickness of the layer and only vary along the layer. To investigate the validity of this approach, experiments are performed on five different groups of specimens with different dimensions. This leads to large variations in the length of the damage zone at the start of the adhesive layer. Four of the experimental groups are used to determine the stress-elongation relation. This is found to be independent of the geometry. For the remaining experimental group, the adherends deform plastically and simulations are performed with the stress-elongation relation determined from the four elastic groups. It is found that the relation cannot be used to accurately predict the behaviour of the experiments where the adherends deform plastically. This indicates that the stress-elongation relation has limited applicability.

Meso-mechanical modeling of thin adhesive layers2004In: The 15th European Conference on Fracture, 2004Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

A meso-mechanical finite element model for a thin adhesive layer is developed. The model is calibrated to experimental results where the adhesive layer is loaded in monotonically increasing peel or shear, cf. Andersson and Stigh [1] and Alfredsson et al. [2], and to an in situ SEM study of the fracture process. The purpose of the meso-mechanical finite element model is to facilitate the development of constitutive laws for adhesive layers.

Ideas developed by Needleman [3], where structural continuum elements are bonded by cohesive elements are used as a basis for the finite element mesh. This thus enables micro cracks to propagate along the finite element boundaries.

The simulations are found to be in good agreement with the experiments. The model is also capable of reproducing realistically the deformation observed in both peel [1] and shear [2] experiments.

    Abstract [en]

A holistic approach to acquisition of strategic resources2007In: Journal of European Industrial Training, ISSN 0309-0590, E-ISSN 1758-7425, Vol. 31, no 8, p. 660-677Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this article is to provide a holistic framework for the acquisition of strategic resources. Design/methodology/approach – The literature dealing with resource creation is reviewed and analyzed from a resource-based point of view. The major methods of acquiring resources are identified through the literature review and the applicability of the framework proposed is illustrated with an empirical example. Findings – Three ways of acquiring strategic resources are identified – direct investments, organizational processes, and product market positioning. All three ways of acquisition can be intentional or unintentional. Arguments for using this six-dimension scale are provided through deductive reasoning, literature review, and the empirical example. Research implications/limitations – The study identifies the six dimensions of strategic resource acquisition. However, integration of these dimensions is not a subject addressed in this study. Cluster analysis of companies according to these dimensions could enhance our understanding of the characteristics of companies regarding resource acquisition. Originality/value – Whereas previous studies have generally used a single-theory approach, this study highlights the importance of having a holistic outlook when analyzing resource-based competitive advantages.

How and what to imitate?: A sequential model for the imitation of competitive advantages2007In: Strategic Change, ISSN 1086-1718, E-ISSN 1099-1697, Vol. 16, no 6, p. 271-279Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Research in competitiveness generally focuses on how competitive advantages can be developed. This is an important area of research, but as a consequence the process of imitation of competitive advantages has become a neglected area of research.

A conceptual sequential model for the imitation of competitive advantages is presented. The model mainly draws on resource-based theory, provides a holistic view of the imitation process, identifies different hindrances to imitation of competitive advantages, and presents arguments for the scheme chosen.

Protective capacity and absorptive capacity: Managing the balance between retention and creation of knowledge-based resources2012In: The Learning Organization, ISSN 0969-6474, Vol. 19, no 5, p. 440-452Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose – In order to understand the pros and cons of an open organization regarding the flow of knowledge between firms, this paper introduces the concept of “protective capacity”. The purpose of the paper is to elaborate the concept of “protective capacity” especially in relation to absorptive capacity, by presenting a number of propositions.

Design/methodology/approach – Literature on mainly interfirm relationships, absorptive capacity and resources-based theory are reviewed and combined.

Findings – Protective capacity is defined as the “capacity to sustain, or to reduce the speed of depreciation of knowledge-based resources by preventing knowledge from being identified, imitated, and/or acquired by direct or indirect competitors”. Owing to the strong moderating factor of organizational openness, it is argued that protective capacity is inversely related to absorptive capacity. A number of propositions that can explain and moderate the inverse relationship between protective capacity and absorptive capacity are elaborated and discussed. These propositions concern organizational openness, knowledge management practices, realized and potential absorptive capacity, and dyadic relationships.

Originality/value – Acquiring external knowledge is a key feature of knowledge management. In order for a firm to absorb external knowledge, it is generally argued that it has to be open towards the environment. However, according to resource-based theory, firms have to safeguard their knowledge by, for example, having a secluded organization, thereby enhancing the uncertainty associated with tacit knowledge in order to sustain their competitive advantages. Whereas numerous studies have discussed the capacity to absorb knowledge, few studies have analyzed the capacity to protect knowledge.

The relationship between employee well-being and firm performance: A resource-based analysis2012In: Proceedings of the 12th Annual Hawaii International Conference on Business, Hawaii International Conference on Business , 2012, p. 719-724Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Enhancing the wellbeing of employees is a key feature of human resource management (HRM) and numerous HRM-practices to strengthen the wellbeing of co-workers have been developed. Although the benefits for the employees of such practices are obvious, the relationship between employee wellbeing and firm performance is unclear. In order to strengthen this relationship some studies have extended the concept of firm performance by including additional "soft" dimensions of performance. However, investing in wellbeing is, of course, associated with costs and several scholars argue that investments in the wellbeing of employees can be regarded as any other investment and from an owner's perspective it is essential to get a return on the investment. In the field of strategic HRM (SHRM), some attempts have been made to analyze the relationship between wellbeing, firm resources and firm performance. Most studies have, however, focused on the relationship between specific HRM-activities and firm performance or certain aspects of resource features. For example, how the wellbeing of employees can enhance the retention of human resources or how wellbeing can stimulate intrapreneurship and thereby generate short-term increases in profits. Thus, few studies have analysed the relationship between wellbeing, competetive advantages and performance from a holistic approach. Consequently, in this paper we present a resource-based analysis of the relationship between the wellbeing of employees and firm performance. We present three propositions regarding the relationship between wellbeing, resources and firm performance. These propositions illustrate the complexity of the relationship by discussing why wellbeing can enhance as well as reduce firm performance.

Application of fracture mechanics to predict the failure load of adhesive joints used to bond CFRP laminates to steel members2012In: Construction and Building Materials, ISSN 0950-0618, E-ISSN 1879-0526, Vol. 27, no 1, p. 331-340Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The use of bolted or welded elements to upgrade metallic structures has been a common practice for many years. Moreover, the use of adhesively bonded carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) laminates, as an alternative method, has attracted a great deal of attention in recent years. One important aspect of the design of adhesive joints used to bond CFRP laminates to steel substrates is the determination of the properties of the CFRP/adhesive/steel interfaces, which have not yet been established in codes or standards. The purpose of this paper is experimentally to determine the fracture properties of the adhesive material and to evaluate the accuracy of numerical methods using this information, in order to predict the strength of adhesive joints in steel members bonded with CFRP laminates. The results from four series of experimental tests are compared with numerical results and discussed in terms of load-bearing capacity and failure modes. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Är rättvist för mig, rättvist för dig?: Betydelsen av social värdeorientering för bedömningar av procedural rättvisa2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The report describes a development of an interior system for a semi professional dishwasher. The project was performed as a Bachelor Degree Project at the University of Skövde in the spring term of 2009 in cooperation with the company ASKO Appliances.

Today ASKO manufactures dishwashers for domestic use, and they would now like to expand their target group by looking at the public sector. The ambition was to design specialized interior systems for the ones which had the greatest need. A requirement was that the interior systems would suit the platform XXL, which is one of ASKO’s current dishwashers.

The project started off with analyzing user needs and a study of the market today. The result of these was used as a foundation for concept generation. A multitude of creativity methods resulted in different concepts which were to be shown at a mid project presentation at ASKO. A decision was made to focus the development on an interior system specialized for cafés.

The final concept, Kombi, was developed in order to simplify the handling of dishes, make room for more items and enable stacking of items specific to cafés. The handling of cutlery was altered, with portable baskets that can be used in the dining areas at cafés. The result that arose will improve the handling of dishes for the employees at cafés.

Återställning av bankernas förmånsrätt 2009: Kommer bankernas kreditgivning att förändras?2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

January 1st 2009 the banks priority rights were restored to once again have special rights with 100 percent at distraint and bankruptcy. The change in Law of priority rights that carried through in 2004 meant only 55 percent and general priority rights. This did not have the desired effects. Instead it became more difficult for companies to get loans from the banks. The alternative financing forms were increasing as the banks no longer had the same security at bankruptcies. The security was instead the object. After research that showed the negative effects with the change in law 2004, the government decided to restore the priority rights of the banks. The question is whether the restoration will change the banks crediting process. The conducted interviews show that a regression was necessary. It does not look like the new law will affect the creditors view on crediting with chattel mortgage, the alternative financing forms will remain.

    Abstract [en]

In recent years, control system in the automation industries has become more and more useful, covering a wide range of fields, for example, industrial instrumentation, control and monitoring systems. Vision systems are used nowadays to improve products quality control, saving costs, time, and obtaining a better accuracy than a human operator in the manufacturing process of companies. Combining a vision system with a suitable automated system allow companies to cover a wide range of products and rapid production. All these factors are considered in this project.

The aim of this project is to upgrade the functionality of a Nokia-Cell, which was used in a quality control process for the back shells of Nokia cell phones. The project includes design, upgrade and implementation of a new system in order to make the cell work properly. The Nokia-Cell is composed of the following basic modules: vision and image recognition system, automation system devices (PC and PLC, robot), and other mechatronics devices. The new system will consist of a new camera, due to the poor connectivity and quality of the old camera. For the same reason, a new PC will replace two older ones for communication and vision recognition. The new system will also include a new PLC of Beckhoff to replace the aging one of Omron so as to facilitate the connections using the same language. In addition, IEC-61499 Function Blocks standard is adopted for programming the Nokia-Cell.

It is expected that the results of this project will contribute to both research and education in the future. In addition, it would be correctly to apply the results to industries in vision-based quality control systems.

IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) is the authority that publishes different standards in the  fields  of  electrical  and  electronics  engineering,  to  be  used  internationally.  In  the  area  of manufacturing, it has demanded a new standard to fulfil better solutions of dynamic requirements. The  IEC  61499  redacted  by  IEC  offers  interoperability,  portability,  configurability  and  distributed control applications for manufacturing processes. However, this standard is not a replacement of IEC 61131-3,  one  of  the  most  used  standards  in  industry;  instead,  it  is  a  complement  of  it.  The  basic software units of IEC 61499 are named Function Blocks (FBs), which can be described as blocks that encapsulate functionality. By combining FBs together, it is possible to solve complex problems.   The  objective  of  this  project  (in  close  cooperation  with  another  project)  is  to  develop  a  software environment in Java language. It follows the requirements of IEC 61499, and implement a Function Block  designer  and  a  runtime  execution  environment,  as  a  part  of  an  existing  Wise-ShopFloor framework. The scope of this project covers:     FB  algorithm  editor:  Each  FB  has  one  or  more  algorithms,  which  can  be  defined  in  the algorithm editor using IEC 61131-3 or Java.     FB serialization: Opening and saving the configuration of FBs in Java Class file is one of the tasks  of  this  project.  As  soon  as  the  configuration  is  saved,  the  Java  code  of  FB  can  be generated. Java code is generated because compiled Java allows execution of FB. Saving in Java  Class  file  permits  portability,  i.e.  the  saved  configuration  can  be  opened  in  any  JVM system, and vice versa.      Case study: A simulation of an assembly station using an ABB IRB 140 robot is studied and implemented using the runtime simulator of the Java platform, in which some basic FBs have been also created in a library. This project also includes: (1) implementation of user interface and (2) FB serialization in XML. It  is  anticipated  that  the  developed  environment  will  be  able  to  save  and  open  FBs  configurations either in XML or in Java Class, following the specification of IEC 61499. It will allow portability and reusability.  Because  of  the  portability,  the  so-designed  FBs  can  be  validated  using  another  FB environment such as FBDK (Function Block Development Kit).

Marknadsföringsetik: Unga konsumenters reaktioner på könsdiskriminerande marknadsföring2011Independent thesis Basic level (university diploma), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Customer service is an important factor in today´s society and has become a way to differentiate themselves from their competitors in the market. The staff’s treatment against the customer has a big significance if the customer experience from the visit is positive or negative. The acting from the staff against the customer can have the decisive role if the customers choose to come back to the store or not.

The purpose of this report is to see how the customer wants the staff to treat them in a fashion store. There are a lot of studies that process how the staff should act against the customers, but less studies that declares how the customers want the staff to treat them in a store. The report will also illustrate if there is any differences how the customers want to be treated depending on the stores price.

The study was based on a quantitative method as a survey. The survey was conducted by the survey tool Enalyzer through the social network Facebook and outside the two chosen fashion stores, MQ and Gina Tricot. 124 female respondents in different ages participated in the study.

The result of this study showed that the staff’s attitude towards the customers plays a significant role for the respondents. The result also illustrates that there are both similarities and differences in the way the customers want to be treated by the staff in both stores. The similarities are that it was important for the respondents, irrespective in what store, to be greeted by the staff with a hello. It is clear that a smile and eye contact from the staff had the same significance in both stores. The differences that appeared concerned what attitudes the respondents value the most from the staff in MQ and Gina Tricot. In MQ the respondents value knowledge the most and in Gina Tricot the most preferred attitude from the staff is to be happy.

    Abstract [sv]

Analysis of manufacturing supply chains using system dynamics and multi-objective optimization2013Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Supply chains are in general complex networks composed of autonomous entities whereby multiple performance measures in different levels, which in most cases are in conflict with each other, have to be taken into account. Hence, due to the multiple performance measures, supply chain decision making is much more complex than treating it as a single objective optimization problem. Thus, the aim of the doctoral thesis is to address the supply chain optimization problem within a truly Pareto-based multi-objective context and utilize knowledge extraction techniques to extract valuable and useful information from the Pareto optimal solutions. By knowledge extraction, it means to detect hidden interrelationships between the Pareto solutions, identify common properties and characteristics of the Pareto solutions as well as discover concealed structures in the Pareto optimal data set in order to support managers in their decision making. This aim is addressed through the SBO-framework where the simulation methodology is based on system dynamics (SD) and the optimization utilizes multi-objective optimization (MOO). In order to connect the SD and MOO software, this doctoral thesis introduced a novel SD and MOO interface application which allow the modeling and optimization applications to interact. Additionally, this thesis work also presents a novel SD-MOO methodology that addresses the issue of curse off dimensionality in MOO for higher dimensional problems and with the aim to execute supply chain SD-MOO in a computationally cost efficient way, in terms of convergence, solution intensification and accuracy of obtaining the Pareto-optimal front for complex supply chain problems. In order to detect evident and hidden structures, characteristics and properties of the Pareto-optimal solutions, this work utilizes Parallel Coordinates, Clustering and Innovization, which are three different types of tools for post-optimal analysis and facilitators of discovering and retrieving knowledge from the Pareto-optimal set. The developed SD-MOO interface and methodology are then verified and validated through two academic case studies and a real-world industrial application case study. While not all the insights generated in these application studies can be generalized for other supply-chain systems, the analysis results provide strong indications that the methodology and techniques introduced in this thesis are capable to generate knowledge to support academic SCM research and real-world SCM decision making, which to our knowledge cannot be performed by other methods.

C. Ng, Kalyanmoy Deb, Springer London, 2011, p. 35-70Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Research regarding supply chain optimisation has been performed for a long time. However, it is only in the last decade that the research community has started to investigate multi-objective optimisation for supply chains. Supply chains are in general complex networks composed of autonomous entities whereby multiple performance measures in different levels, which in most cases are in conflict with each other, have to be taken into account. In this chapter, we present a comprehensive literature review of existing multi-objective optimisation applications, both analytical-based and simulation-based, in supply chain management publications. Later on in the chapter, we identify the needs of an integration of multi-objective optimisation and system dynamics models, and present a case study on how such kind of integration can be applied for the investigation of bullwhip effects in a supply chain.

Agent-based Simulation and Simulation-based Optimisation for Supply Chain Management2010In: Enterprise Networks and Logistics for Agile Manufacturing / [ed] Lihui Wang & S. C. Lenny Koh, Springer London, 2010, p. 227-247Chapter in book (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Agent-based simulation (ABS) represents a paradigm in the modelling and simulation of complex and dynamic systems distributed in time and space. Since manufacturing and logistics operations are characterised by distributed activities as well as decision making - in both time and in space - and can be regarded as complex, the ABS approach is highly appropriate for these types of systems. The aim of this chapter is to present a new framework of applying ABS and simulation-based optimisation techniques to supply chain management, which considers the entities (supplier, manufacturer, distributor and retailer) in the supply chain as intelligent agents in a simulation. This chapter also gives an outline on how these agents pursue their local objectives/goals as well as how they react and interact with each other to achieve a more holistic objective(s)/goal(s).

Integrating System Dynamics and Multi-Objective Optimization for Manufacturing Supply Chain Analysis2012In: Proceedings of the 5th Swedish Production symposium (SPS'12), 2012, p. 433-441Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this paper is to address the dilemma of Supply Chain Management (SCM) within a truly Pareto-based multi-objective context. This is done by introducing an integration of System Dynamics and Multi-Objective Optimization. Specifically, the paper contrasts local optimization with global optimization for SCM in which optimal trade-off solutions in the entity level, i.e. optimizing the supply chain from the perspectives of individual (local) entities. e.g., supplier, factory, distributor and retailer, are collected and compared to those obtained from an overall supply chain level (global) optimization. An extended version of the well-known pedagogical SCM problem, the Beer Game, originally developed at MIT since the 1960s, has been used as the illustrative example. As will be discussed in the paper, the integrated multi-objective optimization and system dynamics model has been shown to be very useful for revealing that how the parameters in the Beer Game affect the optimality of the three common SCM objectives, namely, the minimization of inventory, backlog, and the bullwhip effect.

E-procurement beyond the buyer cost perspective2010In: Proceedings of the 22nd NOFOMA Conference: Logistics and Supply Chain Management in a Globalised Economy / [ed] Jan Stentoft Arlbjørn, University of Southern Denmark , 2010, p. 483-498Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose: The objective of this paper is to provide and argue for a comprehensive view of e-procurement that involves both the buyer and suppliers and that goes beyond looking at mere cost reductions on the buyer side. More specifically, the paper describes benefits and barriers of implementing e-procurement solutions for both buyers and suppliers.

Design/methodology/approach: This paper reports on a literature review combined with a case study. The case is a public organization in Sweden, which prepares to implement an e-procurement solution. Interviews were also conducted with a selection of suppliers to the case organization.

Findings: In e-procurement literature, drivers and barriers are often viewed only from the perspective of a buying organization. Benefits are mainly cost-related for the buying organization, while barriers often include suppliers. It is proposed that benefits and barriers should include both buyers and suppliers. The literature review and the case study findings form the basis for further investigation into this problem area.

Research limitations/implications: This study focuses on a public organization in Sweden. Yet, it could have implications for many public or private organizations considering implementing e-procurement systems.

Practical implications: This research suggest that organizations to a greater extent should take the supplier´s side into account when implementing e-procurement solutions.

Originality/Value: The study highlights a full cycle view on e-procurement taking both buyer and supplier into account.

Etik inom marknadsföring: Vilka effekter har stötande och diskriminerande reklambudskap på unga konsumenter?2009Independent thesis Basic level (university diploma), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Networked (interactive) position: a new view of developing and sustaining competitive advantage2008In: Competitiveness Review: an international business journal, ISSN 1059-5422, E-ISSN 2051-3143, Vol. 18, no 4, p. 333-350Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose – In the extant literature a firm's development of its competitive advantage is seen to be the task of the firm alone. The purpose of this paper is to introduce a new and a broader approach of how competitive advantage can be developed and maintained in today's highly competitive and dynamic markets. To this end, how a firm handles its relationships with significant actors in its network becomes very decisive for the development of its competitive advantage.

Design/methodology/approach – Drawing on a network approach, case studies have been used to shed lights on the extent to which the development of competitive advantage of firms affect and are affected by their interaction with some actors in a network of exchange relationships.

Findings – An important conclusion of this study is that a firm's highly valued performance, an indication of its strong position or competitive strength, has its roots in its regular and intensive interaction with some significant actors in its network.

Research limitations/implications – All firms in this study have demonstrated that competitive advantage can be achieved by building up a strong position through interaction, learning and adaptation with some significant actors in the marketplace. Since the study is based on one setting, extending a similar study to several settings will be very useful.

Originality/value – The paper provides insights into how a firm, in the effort to build its competitive advantage, draws on its own capabilities and complementary capabilities of its partners in a network.

    Abstract [en]

Purpose - The purpose of this study is to provide deeper insights into the extent to which an independent actor(s) actively collaborates with the internationalizing firm so as to jointly determine the choice of market, the mode of entry and the level of investment committed in the market to be entered and even after the entry (i.e. the ongoing activities). Design/methodology/approach - Against the previous purpose section, a qualitative research approach is selected to guide the exploratory nature of this study. Thus qualitative data are used to build the two case studies because case studies are generally a more appropriate approach when "how" and "why" questions are being posed and when the investigator has little control over events. Findings - Based on two multiple case studies, one major finding of the study shows that independent actors, with their interconnected networks, have played and are still playing a major role in influencing the internationalization processes of each of the two firms in this study. Originality/value - This is an original paper developed based on two case studies which have not been published in any journal before. The paper highlights the role of external independent actors in internationalization, which is not mentioned at all or stressed in the extant literature.

Segmenteringens inverkan på butikskommunikationen2009Independent thesis Basic level (university diploma), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

They based their studies on research and conceptual literature that establish the rules and guidelines for how a storefront should be designed in an attractive and effective way to attract attention and convey the store's image. This report examines the importance and use of this type of literature and theories of the smaller privately owned stores. The guidelines for this report are based on the question: In what way is the design of the windows display regarding smaller stores different from the theory?

The repeating pattern of the authors of the literature is about color, light, clustering, minds, and shop window primary attributes. These theories are focusing on creating a well structured and well planned exposure for contributing to store profitability in the best way.

From the scientific and relevant literature has the material to the interviews being created. The interviews were conducted with selected respondents for the subject, four in number, which participated on a voluntary basis. The result shows that there are many differences between theory and practice of the smaller stores. The smaller stores use their own taste and liking, and find their inspiration from sources other than the used literature.

In addition to the differences between theory and practice is the report aiming to find the characteristics of smaller stores designing windows compared with retail chains. Knowledge and awareness is a relevant question regarding the staff and shopowner to the smaller stores, which this repport also is aiming to investigate.

Vem är jag?: - En kvantitativ studie om tonårstjejers identitet och kroppsuppfattning.2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Utvecklingssamtal: En dialog mellan chef och anställd2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

To make visible information at all stages of the process from beginning to end at the company allows the discovery of errors at the early stage of process, and at the same time allows the fact that information been addressed in a timely and efficient manner. It is therefore Pearlson & Saunders (2010) argue that information systems are based on three fundamental pillars: technology, people and process. Without the interaction of these pillars, it is difficult or impossible to succeed in implementing any form of database. The flow of materials and information must go hand in hand with each other to improve production efficiency. It is, therefore, Mattsson (2010) argues that an efficient material flow utilizing resources efficiently create condition of satisfying customer’s demand in good ways. To achieve this goal, it requires for the company to create conditions to report errors in the early stages of the process as soon as possible. This avoids unnecessary work that customers are not prepared to pay for. That's why Alter (2006) points out that the conditions for an increase in efficiency in business can only be reached if there is a clear link between information, technology, users and information management activities. Today IT, Information technology is one of effective tools which enable implementation of the common database within the same organization. The database aims to coordinate and streamline the flow of both materials and information at the company. The common database creates the potential for a complete, time-date and accurate information shared within the company among various departments. These in turn create conditions for the efficient production that leads to profitability.

Född i frihet – Dömd till frihet?: – En kvalitativ studie om unga vuxnas förhållningssätt till valfrihet och väljande.2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

A development project to solve problems with why submersible pumps in a run-off system broke down with periods of two years, on average, was performed in collaboration with Cementa AB in Skövde. Reason for the pumps breakdowns was searched and found to be inadequate procedures and missing knowledge of the maintenance required on the pumps. To solve this problem, guidelines for the purchase of new dry pit pumps were developed to allow for continuous maintenance. As the possibilities of placing a dry well pump did not exist at Cementa, a pump foundation was developed.

Requirements for the development work were produced in cooperation with Cementas maintenance department and theoretical dimensioning of the submersible bilge pumps volume flow capacity was performed. Requirements were evaluated and weighted using Pairwise comparison. The design and control of the strength of the developed pump foundation was performed using finite element analysis in the software Pro/Engineer Creo 1.0 Mechanica. Controls of the strength of the attachment of the pump foundation and welds were performed analytically.

The work resulted in a recommendation to Cementa AB in Skövde to bring in quotes on the new dry-pit pumps using the developed guidelines and to manufacture the pump foundation developed within the framework of the thesis. Cementa was also recommended to carefully follow the maintenance instructions for pumps and make it easier for staff to perform this maintenance. This was recommended to ensure that new pumps would have a longer and more economical lifetime.

"Det är någonting med limhallen": utvecklingen mot ett gott medarbetarskap i en god arbetsmiljö2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Every day customers are exposed to a large quantity of publicity of different kinds. Big amounts are put every year in publicity and the competition among the companies to be shown on the market is getting harder and harder. It is important for companies to understand the buying behaviour of the customer and since most of the decisions are made in the store, many companies make efforts to influence the customers and their decisions in the store.

The problem formulation in this case study is: What does a grocer store do to influence the customer’s buying behaviour?

The purpose of this essay is to identify and deepen our understanding of what factors that influence the customer’s buying decisions and what methods a grocer’s store use. The thesis is based on a case study and interviews have been done with two persons at PA:s Kvantum in Falköping.

The theory starts from a model of buying behaviour by Kotler (2006) that has been adapted to fit our research problem and purpose. We have focused on the part of the model that deals with marketing stimuli, and includes product, price, place and promotion. On top of this, two P:s have been added, i.e. personnel and physical evidence.

The results from the study show that the store in our case uses all of the P:s to influence the customer’s decisions in the store. It is not possible to distinguish any P that has greater importance than another in the work with controlling the buying behaviour of the customer; they are all used parallel and consociate to achieve as big effect as possible.

If a company successfully identifies the factors that influence a customer’s buying behaviour, the marketing measures can be optimized and adjusted to the current market; with the hope of a better result.
