    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Hospice started in the late 1960s. This cares aim is to create a good quality at the end-oflife. One of the pillars of this care is to allow the relatives to take part in the care around the patient. This study aim is to highlight the relative's needs in care for at hospice. The study is a literature review, based on scientific articles. The analysis resulted in four themes, which are information and communication, relative's involvement in care, the relative's experiences and nurse's support to the relatives. It came up that information and communication are of great importance. Both patients and their relatives wanted a little less information and many briefings. The involvement in care can give the relatives a chance to begin to grief. Relatives can need the support from the nurse in their situation. It is generally accepted that patients are well taken care of at the hospice, but what about the experience for the relative's involved in the care of their loved ones? Is it only positive to be close to the patient all the time, or are there also negative sides?

Confronting the inevitable: A conceptual model of miscarriage for use in clinical practice and research2011In: Death Studies, ISSN 0748-1187, E-ISSN 1091-7683, Vol. 35, no 6, p. 536-558Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In spite of scientific evidence that miscarriage has negative psychological consequences for many individuals and couples, silence and dismissal continue to surround this invisible loss in North American culture and beyond. The grief and sorrow of miscarriage has important implications for clinical practice. It indicates a need for therapeutic interventions delivered in a caring, compassionate, and culturally sensitive manner. This research, based on data from 3 phenomenological investigations conducted with 42 women from diverse geographical locations, sexual orientations, and cultural backgrounds offers a theoretical framework for addressing miscarriage in clinical practice and research.

Buffer optimisation of a packaging line using Volvo GTO's flow simulation methodology2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

With the rapid development of computers and their proven usability in manufacturing environments, simulation-based optimisation has become a recognised tool for proposing near-optimal results related to manufacturing system design and improvement. As a world-leading manufacturer within their field, Volvo GTO in Skövde, Sweden is constantly seeking internal development and has in recent years discovered the possibilities provided by flow simulation. The main aim of this thesis is to provide an optimal buffer size of a new post-assembly and packaging line (Konpack) yet to be constructed. A by-product of the flow simulation optimisation project in form of a flow simulation process evaluation was also requested.

The simulation project started with a pre-study including the development of the frame of reference and an analysis of the literature focused on merging Lean philosophy with simulation-based optimisation. The simulation model was built based on both historical and estimated data. The optimisation results showed different buffer size alternatives depending on the throughput to be achieved, these are discussed, and near-optimal solutions presented for decision-making. Additionally, four experiments were carried out, both contributing to the model’s credibility as well as providing new and valuable insight to the stakeholders. The conclusions drawn from the optimisation and experiments indicate that Konpack will be able to meet the established throughput goals, provided that the suggested near-optimal solutions are considered. The experiments also unanimously point to the fact that Konpack has a built-in overcapacity, utilizable by optimising certain suggested input parameters.

Additionally, an evaluation of the completeness of the standard simulation process employed by Volvo GTO is provided, concluding that no major changes are needed. Nevertheless, there is always room for improvement. Hence, future work regarding the flow simulation process at Volvo GTO is proposed.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

The Search for Beauty: Evolution of Minimal Cognition in an Animat Controlled by a Gene Regulatory Network and Powered by a Metabolic System2012In: From Animals to Animats 12: 12th International Conference on Simulation of Adaptive Behavior, SAB 2012, Odense, Denmark, August 27-30, 2012 / [ed] Tom Ziemke, Christian Balkenius, John Hallam, Berlin, Heidelberg: Springer Berlin/Heidelberg, 2012, p. 198-208Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

We have created a model of a hybrid system in which a gene regulatory network (GRN) controls the search for resources (fuel / food and water) necessary to allow an artificial metabolic system (simulated microbial fuel cell) to produce energy. We explore the behaviour of simple animats in a two-dimensional simulated environment requiring minimal cognition. In our system control evolves in a biologically-realistic manner under tight energy constraints. We use a model of GRN in which there is no limit on the size of the network, and the concentration of regulatory substances (transcriptional factors, TFs) change in a continuous fashion. Externally driven concentrations  of selected TFs provid the sensory information to the animat, while the concentration of selected internally produced TFs is interpreted as the signal for actuators. We use a genetic algorithm to obtain diverse evolved strategies in ecologically grounded animats with motivational autonomy, even though they lack a dedicated motivational circuit. There are three motivations (or drives) in the system: thirst, hunger, and reproduction. The animats need to search for food and water, but also to perform work. Because the value of such work is arbitrary (in the eye of the beholder), but affects the chances of reproduction, we suggest that the term beauty is more appropriate, and we name the task the Search for Beauty. The results obtained provide a step towards realizing a biologically realistic system with respect to: the way the control is exercised, the way it evolves, and the way the metabolism provides energy.

Tuberculosis in Asia and the Pacific: The role of socioeconomic status and health system development2012In: International Journal of Preventive Medicine, ISSN 2008-7802, E-ISSN 2008-8213, Vol. 3, no 1, p. 8-16Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Objective: To identify the relationship between socioeconomic status, health system development and the incidence, prevalence and mortality of tuberculosis in Asia and the Pacific. Methods: Incidence, prevalence and mortality rates of tuberculosis and 20 variables of  socioeconomic, health system and biological behavioral issues were included in the study involving all 46 countries of  the Asian Development Bank region (2007 data). Both univariate and multivariate linear regressions were used. Results: The worst three tuberculosis affected countries were Cambodia, India and Indonesia, while the least affected was Australia. Tuberculosis incidence, prevalence and mortality rate were higher in countries with lower human development index, corruption perception index, gross domestic product (GDP) per capita and countries with more people under minimum food supplements. Among the health system variables, total health expenditure per capita, governmental health expenditure per capita, hospital beds, and access to improved water and sanitation were strongly associated with tuberculosis. Conclusions: Socioeconomic determinants and health system development have significant effect on the control of tuberculosis in Asia and the Pacific region. The study has some policy implications by means of  lowering the corruption and improving the sanitation.

Varumärkesplacering i digitala spel: Inverkan av interaktiv belöning och bestraffning på spelarens inställning till och minnesbilder av varumärken2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 180 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to investigate the attitude to and experience of information and communication technology (ICT) in teachers teaching and what motivates them.

The study is qualitative and its research material is based on interviews. There are eight interviews and they where carried out at one school with a stated IT profile and at another school without a stated IT profile. The two schools are located in different municipalities, but both are secondary schools.

The result shows that there are differences in attitude between the two schools. The school with a stated IT profile seems to have a more open mind of using ICT when teaching, but both schools sees the lack of availability as one of the main hindrance for using it. None of the participating teachers saw themselves as controlled to use ICT in their teaching. Neither did the guiding principles from The National Agency for Education about using ICT affect their teaching.

Lagerstyrning och prognostisering av råmateriallagret2014Independent thesis Basic level (university diploma), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Production to customer order usually requires keeping a supply warehouse. Increased customer demands for short lead-times require that materials must be in stock. This result in increasing stock levels in a company leads to more capital tied up and simultaneously leads to poorer yields. To avoid keeping a large storage warehouse whilst keeping a good service requires an effective inventory control.

The purpose of this project is to find out how the demand looks like in the current situation of the company and to develop an appropriate forecasting method and calculation model against a certain pace for inventory control. The methods mentioned in this work are the ABC analysis, calculation of safety stock and forecasting methods.

The results from this work will answer the objectives of the project aims. A variety of analyzes and experiments shall be used to investigate what type of forecasting method that the company should use. The methods and theories raised in the report also aims to be used by similar companies. The aim of the selected forecasting method is also to lead to a better base, from which better forecast precision is one part in order to improve the inventory management. This has, as far as possible, been put in relation to the working methods used in the company today. Some of the work has been to find out how much demand changes during the lead times, i.e. from the ordering of raw material until the material is in the raw material stock. This has also been used to compare forecasting methods against the present approach.

Because the company wants to expand its production, a calculation model has also been developed. This model indicates the inventory level to a desired pace, i.e. demand level.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

To identify what users value, is the key to business for creating competitive advantages. Despite this, designers in the field of service design using several visualization techniques for support when visualizing different aspects of a service. But none of the visualization techniques support the servicedesigner to identify what the user values. The study is based on a exploratory methodology which triangulates, a questionnaire and interview with a summary of the most important "ingredients" that should be included in visualization technology wich supports servicedesigners to identify potential user value before a service is created.

The results of the study are presented in the form of the visualization technique "Value Profile Journey" that aimes to support servicedesigners and companies to whom want to achieve competitive advantage by identifying potential user value through service design. By answering the question the study can face the problems related to the lack of visual aid that supports the company's need to gather knowledge about the type of service that can create user without having to source that from an existing service. The result of this study is meant to be used by servicedesigners to identify activities in the users life in which companies, through their resources, can create services that support users needs and thereby create more value for the users.

A NEW STUDY OF UNBALANCED PRODUCTION LINE WITH OPTIMIZATION2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This project is a continuous research of a topic well-known in the literature, namely, the performance study of unbalanced unpaced production system. In the literature, there were many studies that investigated the statistical outputs of an unbalanced production line using simulation. This project focuses on researching the outputs like average buffer level and idle time that are rarely studied in previous research by using optimization tools from discrete event simulation software FACTS.The models used in the article (Shaaban & McNamara, 2009) have been used as a guideline during the development of the simulation models for this project. Two simulation models were created, each using different discrete event simulation software, namely FACTS analyzer and Plant simulation. Those simulation models fulfills its role in verification & validation stage, with their statistical outputs compared to each other and with Shaaban and McNamara’s results. After verification & validation comes optimization of those simulation models, by using optimization tools from FACTS.The research area expanded during the optimization phase. Originally Shaaban et.al analyzed unbalanced production line with one fixed value of coefficient of variation. In order to expand the view on the properties of an unbalanced production line, three more coefficient variation were added with total of four in this project. As a result, 12 optimization results were created at the end of this project. Each optimization has 30 000 iterations to ensure its convergence. The first step of analysis is done by locating all Pareto-optimal solutions with optimization tools in FACTS. The raw data of all solutions are later transferred and converted into EXCEL files. Using scatter graph and putting all outputs against each other in EXCEL, it creates visual graph that can be used to analyze and to investigate interesting behavior in an unbalanced production line. The analysis on the optimization results showed several interesting behaviors from production line with different settings. One being that if a production line possess worse coefficient of variation than its competition. By raising the inter-stage buffer level of the production line with inferior coefficient of variation, it can achieve the same level, if not greater outputs than its competitor who possess better coefficient of variation. The other interesting behavior are optimization results with highest outputs in regard of either idle time or average buffer level, with deep analyzation using optimization tools from FACTS. Certain operation time pattern and inter-stage buffer pattern could be observed from those results.

    Abstract [en]

The agriculture is the basic industry of national economy, and as it has the characteristic of feebleness, its development requires the safeguard and support of many kinds of mechanisms. The agricultural insurance has a great significance for avoiding the risk during agricultural production and promoting the rural economy. But at present the demand and supplies of the agricultural insurance are both dispirited, and the status quo of development is not very atisfactory in China. Therefore, develop Chinese agricultural insurance is significant and urgent all the time.

Although Chinese government has done a lot of innovations and experiments in some places, the agricultural insurance market is still dead-alive in China. This thesis constructs the research from the point of the present situation of the agricultural insurance, studies and compares the data of agricultural insurance modes in Shanghai, Xinjiang and Heilongjiang in the way of using the real diagnosis, thus to propose the new viewpoint on the mode of the agricultural insurance’s present stage which is used to anticipate the future of the agricultural insurance in the end.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose is to gain a deeper understanding concerning the changes tocommunication and how these changes are perceived from customers and retail companies.Furthermore the intention is to see if these experiences affect the relationship between customer and company through Facebook.

This study is based on a combination of quantitative and qualitative approach.Data has been collected with surveys and interviews from two Swedish retail companies and 17 of their customers also participated.

The result is based upon the answers from only two Swedish retailcompanies and their customers. Because of the few components involved the findings cannotbe generalized.

The findings are that both companies and customers agree regarding the importanceof a company Facebookpage. They also believe the significance of a company beingconstantly active as well. Though they disagree about the main purpose with the company Facebookpage since the customers and companies’ expectations differ. Both parties believethat the company Facebookpage has the possibility to improve the relation however it seemsto depend on personal experiences and opinions when applying to reality-cases.

Computer-aided process planning: A critical review of recent developments and future trends2011In: International journal of computer integrated manufacturing (Print), ISSN 0951-192X, E-ISSN 1362-3052, Vol. 24, no 1, p. 1-31Article, review/survey (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

For the past three decades, computer-aided process planning (CAPP) has attracted a large amount of research interest. A huge volume of literature has been published on this subject. Today, CAPP research faces new challenges owing to the dynamic markets and business globalisation. Thus, there is an urgent need to ascertain the current status and identify future trends of CAPP. Covering articles published on the subjects of CAPP in the past 10 years or so, this article aims to provide an up-to-date review of the CAPP research works, a critical analysis of journals that publish CAPP research works, and an understanding of the future direction in the field. First, general information is provided on CAPP. The past reviews are summarised. Discussions about the recent CAPP research are presented in a number of categories, i.e. feature-based technologies, knowledge-based systems, artificial neural networks, genetic algorithms, fuzzy set theory and fuzzy logic, Petri nets, agent-based technology, Internet-based technology, STEP-compliant CAPP and other emerging technologies. Research on some specific aspects of CAPP is also provided. Discussions and analysis of the methods are then presented based on the data gathered from the Elsevier’s Scopus abstract and citation database. The concepts of ‘Subject Strength’ of a journal and ‘technology impact factor’ are introduced and used for discussions based on the publication data. The former is used to gauge the level of focus of a journal on a particular research subject/domain, whereas the latter is used to assess the level of impact of a particular technology, in terms of citation counts. Finally, a discussion on the future development is presented.

Overexpression of MAC30 in the Cytoplasm of Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma Predicts Nodal Metastasis and Poor Differentiation2010In: Chemotherapy, ISSN 0009-3157, E-ISSN 1421-9794, Vol. 56, no 6, p. 424-428Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Background: Expression of the meningioma-associated protein (MAC30) was increased in several types of tumors, including esophageal, gastric and colon tumors, compared to normal tissue. MAC30 expression levels gradually increased from normal colorectal mucosa to primary colorectal cancer and colorectal cancer spreading to the lymph nodes. MAC30 expression was related to survival in patients with colorectal cancer. However, there is no study on MAC30 in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). Methods: Therefore, MAC30 expression in OSCC was investigated and possible associations of MAC30 expression with clinicopathological variables in OSCC have been analyzed. MAC30 expression was immunohistochemically examined in 20 normal oral mucosa and 43 OSCC specimens. Results: Expression levels of MAC30 in the cytoplasm markedly increased from normal oral epithelial cells to primary OSCC. Strong cytoplasmic staining was significantly higher in primary OSCC compared to normal oral mucosa samples (51 vs. 20%, p = 0.019). Furthermore, MAC30 expression levels in primary tumors of patients with lymph node metastasis exceeded levels in those without metastasis (65 vs. 35%, p = 0.048), and MAC30 expression in poorly differentiated tumors was higher than in well-differentiated ones (90 vs. 39%, p = 0.005). Conclusion: Overexpression of MAC30 in the cytoplasm of OSCC may predict nodal metastasis and poor differentiation.

Knockdown of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-β induces less differentiation and enhances cell-fibronectinadhesion of colon cancer cells2010In: Oncogene, ISSN 0950-9232, E-ISSN 1476-5594, Vol. 29, no 4, p. 516-526Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The role of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-/ (PPAR-/) in the pathogenesis of colon cancer remains highly controversial. This study specifically silenced the PPAR- expression in three colon cancer cell lines with different metastatic potentials. Although PPAR-knockdown resulted in more malignant morphological changes, bigger colony sizes and lower carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) secretion, and enhanced the cell-fibronectin adhesion, cell invasion and migration were unaffected. These effects were stronger in poorly metastatic cell lines compared with highly metastatic ones. Simultaneously, PPAR-knockdown decreased the mRNAs encoding adipocyte differentiation-related protein and liver fatty acid binding protein, and increased the mRNA of ILK, whereas the mRNAs encoding integrin-1 and angiopoietin-like 4 were unchanged. Using immunohistochemistry, we determined that the intensity of PPAR- expression was stronger in rectal cancers with better differentiation than in those with poor differentiation, and was stronger in early-stage tumors than in advanced ones. Together, these findings consistently indicate that PPAR- may facilitate differentiation and inhibit the cell-fibronectin adhesion of colon cancer, having a role as an inhibitor in the carcinogenesis and progression of colorectal cancer. Interestingly PPAR- seems to have a more important role in poorly metastatic cells than in highly metastatic ones.

Biological Function and Prognostic Significance of Peroxisome Proliferator-Activated Receptor delta in Rectal Cancer2011In: Clinical Cancer Research, ISSN 1078-0432, E-ISSN 1557-3265, Vol. 17, no 11, p. 3760-3770Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose: To investigate the expression significance of PPAR beta/delta in relation to radiotherapy (RT), clinicopathologic, and prognostic variables of rectal cancer patients. Experimental Design: We included 141 primary rectal cancer patients who participated in a Swedish clinical trial of preoperative RT. Tissue microarray samples from the excised rectal cancers and the adjacent or distant normal mucosa and lymph node metastases were stained with PPAR delta antibody. Survival probability was computed by the Kaplan-Meier method and Cox regression model. The proliferation of colon cancer cell lines KM12C, KM12SM, and KM12L4a was assayed after PPAR delta knockdown. Results: PPAR delta was increased from adjacent or distant normal mucosa to primary cancers, whereas it decreased from primary cancers to lymph node metastases. After RT, PPAR delta was increased in normal mucosa, whereas it decreased in primary cancers and lymph node metastases. In primary cancers, the high expression of PPAR delta was related to higher frequency of stage I cases, lower lymph node metastasis rate, and low expression of Ki-67 in the unirradiated cases, and related to favorable survival in the cases either with or without RT. The proliferation of the KM12C, KM12SM, or KM12L4a cells was significantly accelerated after PPAR delta knockdown. Conclusions: RT decreases the PPAR delta expression in primary rectal cancers and lymph node metastases. PPAR delta is related to the early development of rectal cancer and inhibits the proliferation of colorectal cancer cells. Increase of PPAR delta predicts favorable survival in the rectal cancer patients either with or without preoperative RT. Clin Cancer Res; 17(11); 3760-70. (C)2011 AACR.

A framework to support the development of Cyber Resiliency with Situational Awareness Capability2015In: 20th ICCRTS Proceedings: C2, Cyber, and Trust, International Command and Control Institute , 2015Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Cybersecurity success is essentially the result of an effective risk management process. However, this process is being challenged by the inherent complexity of systems, developed with vulnerable components and protocols, and the crescent sophistication of attackers, now backed by well-resourced criminal organizations and nations. With this scenario of uncertainties and high volume of events, it is essential the ability of cyber resiliency. Cyber resiliency is the ability of a system, organization, mission, or business process to anticipate, withstand, recover from, and adapt capabilities in the face of adversary conditions, stresses, or attacks on the cyber resources it needs to function. In the present work, it is presented a framework for cyber resiliency where a segmentation strategy and the Intrusion Kill Chain (IKC) attack model, developed by Lockheed-Martin, are central elements. Segmentation allows the construction of a layered defense, where the highest-priority assets are in the inner layers and the attackers are forced to surpass several layers to reach them. The IKC attack model is a model of seven phases that the attackers must perform to achieve their goals. Each segment is supposed to be designed with the best efforts to prevent, detect and contain an IKC. According to the Situational Awareness (SA) model of Endsley, the Level of Perception is achieved through sensors connected to the controls of prevention, detection and containment of IKC in different segments. The Level of Understanding is obtained by identifying the segments impacted by the attackers, and the Level of Projection by the identification of the next segments to be attacked and defense actions required to contain this advance. The use of the framework leads to the development of a structured set of defense mechanisms, and supports the development of SA capability to allow defenders to make correct decisions in order to maintain the mission even under a heavy attack

Hur påverkas unga kvinnor av Influencers på Instagram: En kvalitativ studie om unga kvinnors upplevelser av att följa Influencers på Instagram2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

For young adult’s age 18-25 years, Instagram is a popular social network. With the expansion of social media, a new kind of commercial role- model has been created, the so- called Influencers. Based on the understanding and interpretation of previous research, this study will look into what impact the social network phenomena Instagram-Influencers have on young girls’ self-perception and identity. The purpose of this study is to answer the following questions: How do young women experience the social network Instagram and its Influencers? How is the identity of young women affected by the Influencers on the social media Instagram? In what way do young women experience that their identity is being shaped, in those cases it has an impact? To study this, qualitative interviews are used and conducted with six different active female users, between ages 18-25. The collected data were analyzed with a thematic inductive approach. The result is linked to three main themes; Instagram's importance, being an Influencer, Influencers and their impact on their followers, as well as the subcategory: Identity online and identity offline. In my analyzation, the conclusion is, that there is a clear link between an increased digital interaction and social comparison, and their effect on identity and self-perception. The respondents believe that the Influencers display a misleading view of reality. The followers get the impression that the content is filtered and only highlights flattering topics, and that the purpose with this is to enforce and emphasize the value of the Influencers’ statements. Similarly, the respondents themselves are affected to construct images of happiness, but in reality – offline- the feeling of loneliness and sadness occurs. The end discussion addresses the clear link between increased digital interactions and the sense of social comparison, the need for conformity and role-limiting behavior.

Evaluation of Markov Models in Location Based Social Networks in Terms of Prediction Accuracy2016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Location Based Social Networks has attracted millions of mobile internet users. On their smart phones people can share their locations using social network services.

The main purpose of check-ins is to provide other users’ information about places they visit. Location Based Social Network with thousands of check-ins allows users to learn social behavior through spatial-temporal effect, which provides different services such as place recommendation and traffic prediction. Through this information, we can have an idea about important locations in the city and human mobility. The main purpose of this thesis is to evaluate Markov Models in Location Based Social Networks in terms of prediction accuracy.

Location Based Social Network features and basic information’s will be analyzed before modeling of human mobility. Afterwards with the use of three methods human mobility will be modeled. In all the models the check-ins are analyzed based on prior category. After estimation the user’s possible next check-in category, and according to the user’s check-ins in the following category, it predicts the next possible check-in location. Finally a comparison will be made considering the models prediction accuracy.

Swedish social insurance officers' experience of their working conditions when dealing with applications for disability pension2008In: Work: A journal of Prevention, Assesment and rehabilitation, ISSN 1051-9815, E-ISSN 1875-9270, Vol. 31, no 4, p. 451-459Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to describe how Swedish social insurance officers experienced their working conditions, when dealing with applications for disability pensions (DPs). A qualitative research design was selected to describe their experiences. Open-ended interviews with ten social insurance officers were analyzed with inductive content analysis. This analysis showed that the working conditions were influenced by rules and regulations and the social insurance officers' competence. The social insurance officers' powerful positions and how their discretion was implemented made them feel responsible for performing their work well. They felt that the large number of clients hampered them from being able to offer the clients the activities they were entitled to, and from paying each client sufficient attention. There was a need for time to reflect and to improve management, in order to better develop the way in which DPs were handled. There was a difference in culture between the older social insurance officers, who had experience-based training, and the younger social insurance officers, who had academic qualifications. The results from this study could be used to better develop the organisation of work in the social insurance agency, and in further educational activities.

Swedish social insurance officers' experiences of difficulties in assessing applications for disability pensions: an interview study2007In: BMC Public Health, ISSN 1471-2458, E-ISSN 1471-2458, Vol. 7, p. 128-Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

    Background

In this study the focus is on social insurance officers judging applications for disability pensions. The number of applications for disability pension increased during the late 1990s, which has resulted in an increasing number of disability pensions in Sweden. A more restrictive attitude towards the clients has however evolved, as societal costs have increased and governmental guidelines now focus on reducing costs. As a consequence, the quantitative and qualitative demands on social insurance officers when handling applications for disability pensions may have increased. The aim of this study was therefore to describe the social insurance officers' experiences of assessing applications for disability pensions after the government's introduction of stricter regulations.

    Methods

Qualitative methodology was employed and a total of ten social insurance officers representing different experiences and ages were chosen. Open-ended interviews were performed with the ten social insurance officers. Data was analysed with inductive content analysis.

    Results

Three themes could be identified as problematic in the social insurance officers' descriptions of dealing with the applications in order to reach a decision on whether the issue qualified applicants for a disability pension or not: 1. Clients are heterogeneous. 2. Ineffective and time consuming waiting for medical certificates impede the decision process. 3. Perspectives on the issue of work capacity differed among different stakeholders. The backgrounds of the clients differ considerably, leading to variation in the quality and content of applications. Social insurance officers had to make rapid decisions within a limited time frame, based on limited information, mainly on the basis of medical certificates that were often insufficient to judge work capacity. The role as coordinating actor with other stakeholders in the welfare system was perceived as frustrating, since different stakeholders have different goals and demands. The social insurance officers experience lack of control over the decision process, as regulations and other stakeholders restrict their work.

    Conclusion

A picture emerges of difficulties due to disharmonized systems, stakeholder-bound goals causing some clients to fall between two stools, or leading to unnecessary waiting times, which may limit the clients' ability to take an active part in a constructive process. Increased communication with physicians about how to elaborate the medical certificates might improve the quality of certificates and thereby reduce the clients waiting time.

Fidelity in Simulation-based Serious Games2019In: IEEE Transactions on Learning Technologies, ISSN 1939-1382, E-ISSN 1939-1382Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The extensive use of Simulation-based Serious Games (SSGs) has made a revolution in educational techniques. As a potentially significant feature for SSG design and evaluation, the term fidelity (the similarity between an SSG and its real reference) emerges and attracts increasing attention. The study of fidelity not only benefits the design, development, and analysis of an SSG with the consideration of improving the learning effect but also contributes to the investment reduction of an SSG. However, the term fidelity is used inconsistently in current literature. The introduction of new technologies (e.g. virtual reality) and the blend of multiform SSGs also facilitate the extension of fidelity with new connotations. All lead to confusing concepts and vague measure metrics. Besides, the relationship between fidelity and learning effect is still uncertain. A new vision and a comprehensive conceptual framework of fidelity for more general applications are in need. In this paper, further exploration and discussion of these issues in relation to fidelity of SSGs are presented through a systematic review. A general conceptual framework considering both aspects of the SSG system itself and the learners is developed and applied to analyze fidelity in SSGs. Based on that, a discussion on fidelity related issues of SSG design and development is presented.

Molecular profiling of multidrug-resistant river water isolates: insights into resistance mechanism and potential inhibitors2019In: Environmental science and pollution research international, ISSN 0944-1344, E-ISSN 1614-7499Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Polluted waters are an important reservoir for antibiotic resistance genes and multidrug-resistant bacteria. This report describes the microbial community, antibiotic resistance genes, and the genetic profile of extended spectrum β-lactamase strains isolated from rivers at, Pune, India. ESBL-producing bacteria isolated from diverse river water catchments running through Pune City were characterized for their antibiotic resistance. The microbial community and types of genes which confer antibiotic resistance were identified followed by the isolation of antibiotic-resistant bacteria on selective media and their genome analysis. Four representative isolates were sequenced using next generation sequencing for genomic analysis. They were identified as Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, and two isolates were Enterobacter cloacae. The genes associated with the multidrug efflux pumps, such as tolC, macA, macB, adeL, and rosB, were detected in the isolates. As MacAB-TolC is an ABC type efflux pump responsible for conferring resistance in bacteria to several antibiotics, potential efflux pump inhibitors were identified by molecular docking. The homology model of their MacB protein with that from Escherichia coli K12 demonstrated structural changes in different motifs of MacB. Molecular docking of reported efflux pump inhibitors revealed the highest binding affinity of compound MC207-110 against MacB. It also details the potential efflux pump inhibitors that can serve as possible drug targets in drug development and discovery.

Human Embryonic Stem Cell Derived Hepatocyte-Like Cells as a Tool for In Vitro Hazard Assessment of Chemical Carcinogenicity2011In: Toxicological Sciences, ISSN 1096-6080, E-ISSN 1096-0929, Vol. 124, no 2, p. 278-290Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Hepatocyte-like cells derived from the differentiation of human embryonic stem cells (hES-Hep) have potential to provide a human relevant in vitro test system in which to evaluate the carcinogenic hazard of chemicals. In this study, we have investigated this potential using a panel of 15 chemicals classified as noncarcinogens, genotoxic carcinogens, and nongenotoxic carcinogens and measured whole-genome transcriptome responses with gene expression microarrays. We applied an ANOVA model that identified 592 genes highly discriminative for the panel of chemicals. Supervised classification with these genes achieved a cross-validation accuracy of > 95%. Moreover, the expression of the response genes in hES-Hep was strongly correlated with that in human primary hepatocytes cultured in vitro. In order to infer mechanistic information on the consequences of chemical exposure in hES-Hep, we developed a computational method that measures the responses of biochemical pathways to the panel of treatments and showed that these responses were discriminative for the three toxicity classes and linked to carcinogenesis through p53, mitogen-activated protein kinases, and apoptosis pathway modules. It could further be shown that the discrimination of toxicity classes was improved when analyzing the microarray data at the pathway level. In summary, our results demonstrate, for the first time, the potential of human embryonic stem cell--derived hepatic cells as an in vitro model for hazard assessment of chemical carcinogenesis, although it should be noted that more compounds are needed to test the robustness of the assay.

Sleep Quality, Fatigue, and Health-Related Quality of Life in Patients on Initial Peritoneal Dialysis and Multiple Modalities after Two Years: A Prospective Study2019In: Nephrology Nursing Journal : Journal of The American Nephrology Nurses Association, ISSN 1526-744X, E-ISSN 2163-5390, Vol. 46, no 6, p. 615-649Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to investigate changes in sleep quality, fatigue, mental health, and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) over a two-year period among patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis treatment at home. We further explored the extent to which sleep quality, fatigue, and mental health predicted health-related quality of life outcomes. This prospective study included 55 patients. Sleep parameters changed over two years, independently of treatment. Sleep variables at baseline, to some extent, predicted sleep quality after two years. Daytime sleepiness can be a long-term problem. Findings indicate improvements in nocturnal sleep over a two-year time period, independently of dialysis treatment. In contrast, fatigue remained unchanged over the same time period. Transplantation seems to generally benefit the outcome of HRQoL. Strategies to improve sleep and HRQoL may include systematic risk factor modification and efforts to optimise symptomatic treatment.

Optimization of PCR Sensitivity for Detection of Bacterial Species in Blood of Patients with Suspected Sepsis2015Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Sepsis is commonly caused by bacteria, fungi or both present in the blood stream during inflammation. In response, inflammatory cascades are released in multiple organ systems which if prolonged causes sepsis and can eventually lead to organ failure and death. The major diagnostic technique of sepsis is blood culturing. However, the technique is time consuming and lacks sensitivity; especially in patients under antimicrobial therapy. Molecular techniques particularly PCR could possibly become implemented in sepsis diagnostics in the future. The aim of the thesis was to compare the effect on PCR sensitivity by different PCR kits, with optimized PCR conditions to find an ideal Real-time PCR applicable for direct detection of rRNA or rDNA in whole blood, using the 16S rDNA gene. The study also surveyed the overall background flora of bacterial species circulating in the blood. During the optimization Haemophillus influenzae and Streptococcus pneumoniae were added to whole blood, rRNA or rDNA was isolated and extracted and subsequently processed by Real-time PCR. Four commercially available PCR kits were compared. Attempts using rRNA did not significantly increase the PCR sensitivity. LightCycler FastStart DNA Master SYBR Green I kit (Roche Diagnostics) used for rDNA, generated low cp-values, the cleanest sequences and the finest separation between amplification curves. Twenty whole blood and pre-cultured patient samples were processed by the optimized PCR. The effect on PCR sensitivity by pre-culturing patient blood samples was studied and no statistical difference was noted. Increased PCR sensitivity is essential for implementation of PCR techniques in sepsis diagnostics.

Evolutionär algoritm för schemaläggning av kontinuerligt skiftarbete: Schemaläggning med ergonomiska riktlinjer2010Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Smartphones combine telephony services with data services in a single device. In 2007, Apple released a new generation of phones run by iOS operating system, called iPhones. Android phones were developed by Google and were released the following year. Smartphones use has increased a lot and they have become one of the most common devices that are being used in most of companies nowadays. The concept BYOD stands for Bring Your Own Device, means that employees may use their own smartphones at work. This makes using the built-in security features in smartphones particularly important, not only to protect employees’ private information but also to protect their corporate information. Early research has shown that threats and attacks have also increased on smartphones. Hackers have focused their attacks on smartphones more than before. And have created mobile-based viruses, malware and spyware that target vulnerable smartphones. Smartphone users nowadays do not have much control of their smartphones security according to previous researches. However, smartphones manufacturers constantly add new built-in security features with each new version of operating system to protect them from various threats. Smartphone manufacturers may use the acquired final data to improve their products’ security and increase the use of mobile built-in security features.

The current study researches students’ interaction and use of the built-in security features available in smartphones run by both Android and iOS operating systems. The study does not divide students into smaller groups; it rather focuses on all students as one group. Although this study was conducted in the University of Skovde in Sweden, its conclusion can be applied to a bigger population regardless of location. Today's students are tomorrow’s employees and managers who will have the responsibility to protect their companies’ proprietary and sensitive information. Therefore, it is critical that they understand and implement all up-to-date procedures to protect their smartphones and their companies.

A quantitative study is conducted through a survey in order to reach as many participants as possible. Lime Survey tool is utilized to create surveys and to gather data. Statistics and diagrams are also used to demonstrate results to readers. A total of 201 participants completed the entire study, 134 participants answered the Android survey and 67 answered the iOS survey.

The current survey results have shown, through a model that converts participants’ answers into a flow chart, that the use of the built-in security features varies among participating students. The use of these built-in security features was low in general. More than half of all participants do not use certain functions at all. The general low use of the built-in security features can be attributed to many reasons. This survey showed that the main reason of that was the lack of participants’ knowledge of these built-in security features. Several solutions exist for this lack of knowledge of participants, but they do not fall within the scope of this study therefore not discussed herein.

Säkerhetsutmaningar med metadatahantering: Utmaningar med insamlingen av personlig metadata via e-handelssystem2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The development and progress of the e-commerce system has dominated electronic trade in recent years. Problems that often arise are how confident is the handling of consumer data, specifically regarding the personal metadata that the user generates when shopping through the net. Many companies and organizations are investing a great deal in expanding their consumer services using market strategy Business-to-Consumer (B2C), but most collecting data have little attention to consistent documents that occur with the management of personal privacy, collection of personal metadata and the legal protection of this type of data. This paper addresses challenges with how personal metadata is handled and how it can be implemented to make the use less problematic. Survey in this paper found that the challenge lies mostly in the coordination between technology and law. IT experts must specify how metadata should be collected, how it should be stored and what should it be used for, while legal experts must qualify if metadata is to be treated as traditional data or whether it will have a specific legal system. Other findings such as the collection, storage and usage of metadata were also featured in this work.

Patient visit forecasting in an emergency department using a deep neural network approach2019In: Kybernetes, ISSN 0368-492X, E-ISSN 1758-7883Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This study aims to investigate factors affecting daily demand in an emergency department (ED) and to provide a forecasting tool in a public hospital for horizons of up to 7 days.In this study, first the important factors to influence the demand in EDs were extracted from literature then the relevant factors to our study are selected. Then a deep neural network is applied for constructing a reliable predictor.Although many statistical approaches have been proposed for tackling this issue, better forecasts are viable through employing the abilities of machine learning algorithms. Results indicate that the proposed approach outperforms statistical alternatives available in the literature such as multiple linear regression (MLR), autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA), support vector regression (SVR), generalized linear models (GLM), generalized estimating equations (GEE), seasonal ARIMA (SARIMA) and combined ARIMA and linear regression (LR) (ARIMA-LR).We applied this study in a single ED to forecast the patient visits. Applying the same method in different EDs may give us a better understanding of the performance of the model. The same approach can be applied in any other demand forecasting after some minor modifications. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to propose the use of long short-term memory (LSTM) for constructing a predictor of the number of patient visits in EDs.

Conceptual mobile device with focus on design for recycling2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

One of the largest product categories within all the electronic products is portable computers, also known as notebooks, is slowly replacing stationary computers and is predicted to be the mainstream choice in the near future. But the current state of notebook shows these products are not accommodated for an effective large scale recycling process. As the notebooks are becoming more compact, its inner structures have become more complicated. Permanently fastening methods, multi-material compositions and many other factors contribute to an ineffective, expensive and tedious recycling process.

The goal of the project treated in this report was to investigate the possibilities of a simplified structure adapted for an effective disassembly and recycling process. And to develop a conceptual notebook adapted for the stated purpose.

The project resulted in a conceptual notebook named Sixten with an enhanced and simplified inner structure. All permanently fastening methods was replaced by detachable locking and securing devices. The number of tools required for dismantling was reduced, as the usage of screws. The variation of materials used in the notebook, with electrical components apart, is low. These materials, ABS plastics and aluminum were chosen based on their recyclable and processing possibilities. But also because of the durability and desired mechanical properties the structure required. The limited number of materials used in Sixten makes it environmentally beneficial since every material requires its own specific recycling process, and by reducing the number of materials energy can be saved on using only a few recycling methods.

Sixten fulfills the principals of design for disassembly as a notebook that is easy to disassemble in comparison with notebooks on the market today. The disassembly time has been reduced, from the 45 minutes which may be required to fully disassemble a conventional notebook, down to an estimated disassembly time of 6 minutes, which is the time Sixten requires. It is in this short disassembly time where the economic benefits of Sixten lie.

The impact of R&D intensity on the volatility of stock price: A study of the Swedish Market during year 1997-20052007Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis investigates the theoretical and empirical relationships between a firm’s R&D investment intensity and the systematic risk of its common stock in Sweden. This is done by examining 38 Swedish firms between 1997 and 2005. An overlapping set of 5-year window is chosen to apply to calculate the variables of the samples.

In this thesis, three factors are introduced as a proxy of main constituents of systematic risk: intrinsic business risk, degree of financial leverage and degree of operating leverage. And we use these three constituents to analysis the relationship between R&D investment and systematic risk.

The results from Monte Carlos simulations and correlation analysis of our sample show that, in Sweden, firms with higher R&D intensity do face higher stock price volatility in the stock market. At the same time, we attempt to test the relationship among R&D and systematic risk’s three constituents, but find that R&D intensive firms have more financial leverage which is opposite to our expect, which might due to the shortage of data and limitation of our sample selection, and R&D intensive firms do not have obvious relations directly with intrinsic business risk, degree of financial leverage or degree of operating leverage.

The purpose of this study is to make the parents expectations on the schools liability, of when a child ends up in a situation where he/she gets bullied, visible. The study aims also at lifting the parents' thoughts and expectations of the work around the cooperation between the school and the home in this matter. The definition of bullying which underlies this study is: when some or someone repeatedly gets insulting treatment. Different types of bullying are presented to give a background to what bullying could mean. The study is a qualitative examination where seven parents, to children between the ages of 6-12, have been interviewed. The result shows that parents have high expectations on the schools in the matter of cooperation with the homes. It also showed that the parents expect the schools to mark that bullying is unacceptable. The parents also wish for measures and follow-ups in the event of a bullying situation. The conclusion is that commitment, availability and cooperation are important parts which the parents expect from the schools in the case of a bullying situation.

    Abstract [en]

Research on family business is quite extensive. But there are still many questions that remain unanswered. An important issue relating to family business development is the desire to bring in external expertise in the finance area. It may involve services such as finance manager, controller or accountant. In this work the authors have attempted to answer the question of why the management of family businesses chooses to bring in external expertise in economics. The theory implies that the family business as long reluctant to bring in external expertise for the benefit of their own family members. The conclusions to be drawn after evaluating responses from eight family business CEOs and externally added staff in finance is that they are mostly very much welcoming the appointment of external staff in finance. Most of the view implies that without the addition of external staff, the companies would not develop as successfully as they have done. They see external staff within the finance area as strength for the new knowledge, experience and skills that businesses will benefit from. Many CEO: s advocates that you get in a person who can come up with other solutions to the problems than the conventional ones, but also a less emotional approach to family business affairs, which may be a distinct advantage. New ideas and knowledge will benefit the company. However, the personal dynamics of the external competence are of great importance to companies in the survey, it should fit into the entrepreneurial spirit and be easy to deal with, but still have privacy. Disadvantages as some have pointed out are for example, if the externally appointed expert may terminate their service or manipulate the records.

Given all the laws and regulations that govern todays businesses requires a lot of expertise in economics, especially in the consolidated financial statements, taxation, financial statement and annual reports. This knowledge can in a few cases be met by family members, but in the vast majority of companies, you need to get the skills into the company from outside.

We believe that our study has given us answers to the questions we had put up on the family company's approach to the use of external expertise in economics. Namely, those family businesses that want to develop win a lot of hiring external expertise in economics. Not just economically but also in many other areas.
