    Abstract [en]

    When information systems (IS) are developed and implemented, in any context, a number of success factors determine whether or not the effort will succeed. Attention to success factors helps to avoid some costly mistakes, and speeds up the way change is managed. This paper is focused on how to manage critical success factors (CSF) in organisations involved in standards-based Business-to-Business (B2B), with a focus on organisational CSFs. An existing CSF framework in IS planning is applied theoretically to a B2B setting. Activities in a B2B standards implementation model are compared and matched against the framework. Results show that the framework is suitable for planning B2B implementations, essentially for strategic planning. Based on these results we have developed concrete guidelines to be used in the planning phase by strategic planners. Future work will consist of empirical validation, further detailing the guidelines in order to develop a practically useful ”tool” for managing CSF in a B2B standards implementation.

    Abstract [en]

    Society is based on knowledge and the availability thereof. Access to knowledge empowers people, and organizations must reuse knowledge to be competitive. The right knowledge to the right person at the right time is important for success, and IT plays an important role in order to achieve this goal, for example in the form of Electronic Knowlege Repositories (EKR). The success of an EKR depends on what is stored therein, and the ability to capture the right knowledge is hence a key aspect. This, however, is a complex issue. The goal of this paper is to identify and describe different types of knowledge loss, seven of which have been identified and characterized. As an example, one knowledge loss shows that not all knowledge can be stored, and critical knowledge elements may therefore be lost when attempting to store it. Some knowledge loss may be desirable, since an organization should not want to store everything. The results contribute to capturing the right knowledge, and hence to successful EKR. The results thus contribute to elevating the competitive power of an organization.

    Abstract [en]

    This paper presents a systematic literature review performed to investigate if there is a prevailing definition of reference implementation in the standards community, and how reference implementations are referenced to be used within the standards community. The literature review targets all electronically available core journals and conferences in the field, and the results are classified according to a framework introduced in the paper. We found that there is one definition that focuses on conformance testing, but the results from the literature review show more uses of reference implementations such as when developing standards, when implementing them, and when developing products.

    Abstract [en]

    Patient Empowerment (PE) allows patients to be more active in managing their own health and quality of life. The aim of this paper is to analyze how trust affects PE, in the context of healthcare information systems. An interview study was conducted concerning patients’ online access to electronic healthcare records. Results show that PE requires that patients trust the information that healthcare professionals and their electronic health record systems provide. Without trust, patients cannot control their own participation in relation to the healthcare professionals. This may result in a diminished ability to participate in the healthcare processes regarding their own care. Practical implications include acquired knowledge about and awareness of how trust influences PE, with particular emphasis on healthcare professionals. A trust model is presented that illustrates the trustor-trustee dimensions of PE. This model has both theoretical and practical implications in its illustration of how trust and PE connect.

    The papers published in these proceedings were presented at the 10th Doctoral Consortium of the Conference on Advanced Information Systems Engineering, taking place in Velden, Klagenfurt, Austria on June 16-17, 2003. Starting in 1994, the Doctoral Consortium has been held annually during the CAiSE conference, in Utrecht (Netherlands, 1994), Jyväskylä (Finland, 1995), Heraklion (Greece, 1996), Barcelona (Spain, 1997), Pisa (Italy, 1998), Heidelberg (Germany, 1999), Stockholm (Sweden, 2000), Interlaken (Switzerland, 2001), and Toronto (Canada, 2002).

    The Doctoral Consortia on Advanced Information Systems Engineering are intended to bring PhD students together within the information systems engineering field, and give them an opportunity to present and discuss their research in a constructive and international atmosphere. They are accompanied by prominent professors in the information systems engineering field that provide feedback on the research work presented by the PhD students.

    Submissions to the Doctoral Consortia are extended abstracts of ongoing PhD research. For the 10th Doctoral Consortium of CAiSE*03, 10 submissions were accepted and presented at the workshop. The papers demonstrate a variety of research topics and approaches, covering research in: business process modelling and integration, events in active systems, semantic interoperability, Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), mobile agents, e-commerce consumers, data management, data quality, and knowledge-based methods for Asbru protocols. During the workshop, each paper was introduced by a 20 minute presentation followed by a 25 minute discussion of the topic, research approach and research limitations. Furthermore, during the consortium, the professors gave talks on general questions related to PhD research, and participated in a panel debate on what constitutes a good PhD thesis.

    Our special thanks go to the accompanying professors at the consortium: Jeffrey Parsons (Faculty of Business Administration, Memorial University of Newfoundland, Canada), Richard Welke (J. Mack Robinson College of Business, Georgia State University, USA), Sudha Ram (College of Business and Public Administration, University of Arizona, USA), and Hans Oppelland (Faculty of Economics, Erasmus University of Rotterdam, Netherlands). The Doctoral Consortium would not have been possible without their valuable contributions.

The results describe TSM and illustrate its introduction for seven doctoral projects within a postgraduate school in applied informatics. The experiences from the first two years in use are: enhanced communication, mutual understanding of academic and business values, and opportunity to the doctoral students to build a research identity associated to their own project.

    Industrial doctoral projects are one possible way to promote knowledge transfer between universities and commercial organizations. These projects are anchored and initiated in problems identified by business organizations, further discussed and refined by researchers from related research areas and last approximately four-five years. Although, there are a number of benefits of such interdisciplinary projects, there are also associated challenges. The challenges often relate to differences in cultures, interests and goals of the involved parties. The hypothesis behind our study is that systematic communication on business values and academic requirements within the specific doctoral projects considerably increases the probability of success of the projects by producing academic and industrial values as well as saves time.

     

    This paper presents the Thesis Steering Model (TSM), an instrument developed to support systematic communication and collaboration for the different stakeholders involved in industrial doctoral projects. The development of TSM is based on project management tools used by organizations, and on national requirements for postgraduate education. TSM emphasizes the early stages of a project. The paper includes basic motivations and issues in developing the TSM, as well as its use in the view of academic literature in the subject. The results illustrate the use of TSM for seven doctoral projects within a postgraduate school in applied informatics. The experiences from the first two years in use are that benefits occur in terms of enhanced communication, mutual understanding and building long-term relations between industry and academy and giving more opportunity to the doctoral students to build a research identity associated to their own project. Additionally, we discuss the need and role of structured communication for resource handling and necessary intercultural collaboration activities needed during industrial doctoral projects.

    Abstract [en]

    In recent years, we have seen an ever increasing push for new public e-services. Such e-services must be useful and beneficial for governments but also for citizens. In order to develop e-services that are effective, efficient and satisfactory for the citizens, the citizens have to be kept in focus and be involved in the development process. However, municipalities face pressure to develop a wide range of e-services, but at the same time battle palpable scarce resources. In this paper, a concept that addresses this problem within an ongoing research project is presented. We express this concept as ‘figurative user participation through the use and reuse of empirically grounded personas with help of persona repository including usage guidance that is shared among several municipalities’. The purpose of this paper is to empirically explore municipalities’ perceptions and attitudes towards this concept. The result shows that the municipalities are positive to the concept and consider it having great potentials. However, some challenges and pitfalls have also been brought out that need to be taken into account and addressed.

    Digital exclusion of elderly citizens is a main contributor for poor uptake of public e-service. The situation is alarming since elderly citizens are a major target for many upcoming services provided by governments, such as online health care services. Playing an important role in a sustainable society, governments should always strive towards increased efficiency and effectivity in order for publicly founded resources to be better used. However, sustainable development of public e-services is problematic if the intended receivers of such services are excluded from, or do not want to use them. In order to address this problematic situation we need to know more about elderly citizens’ perceptions of why they are digitally excluded. We add to existing research by providing a large sample of empirical data explaining elderly citizens’ own perceptions about why they are digitally excluded. Furthermore, we present how these perceptions can be categorised and also how they relate in between. Such findings may serve as a basis for how to deal with these problems in order to enhance digital inclusion of elderly citizens, which in the long run may enhance their uptake of public e-service.

    It is evident that user participation is a vital component for successful public e-service development.  However, it is also apparent that there is little guidance in e-government research about how user participation should be implemented in practice. Some high level guidelines can be found regarding user participation design schools but there is very little guidance in existing research regarding how these design schools can be implemented in practice. In this paper we have explored public administrations’ experience of user participation, both in general systems development and in development of public e-services, in order to identify basic requirements that have to be fulfilled when implementing user participation in public e-service development. Thereafter we have applied these requirements on commonly used techniques to implement user participation in the light of three design schools: Participatory Design, User Centered Design, and User Innovation. Our results show that techniques to implement user participation in public e-service development must be adjusted to limited resources in terms of time and money as well as short development projects.

    Web Services (WS), a currently popular subject among application developers, IT architects, and researchers, can be defined as a technology for publishing, identifying and calling services in a network of interacting computer nodes. The purpose of this paper is to illustrate the benefits of using patterns as a means of managing knowledge concerning security in the context of Web Services. We draw upon experiences from an industrial project in which a pattern catalogue for Web Services was created. The pattern catalogue consists of 29 patterns, which are generic solutions for service-based development and service-oriented architectures. In particular, Web Services are in focus as the enabling technique.

    In an increasingly digitalised society, participation becomes dependent on digital skills – the ability to understand and use the everyday Internet technologies that surround us. People who have difficulty acquiring these skills risk being digitally excluded. One such group is the elderly; all research studies show that they are disadvantaged. The project focuses on digital inclusion for elderly citizens, addressing goal 10 of the United Nations global sustainability goals: reduced inequality within and among countries. It brings together researchers, industry and government in a collaborative practice (action research) program designed to increase theoretical knowledge of digital inclusion in Sweden, and to provide useful guidelines and tools for improving societal involvement of elderly citizens. The collaborative practice approach incorporates survey and interview techniques to ensure scientific rigor. A feature of the project is the use of a cross-generational teaching and learning approach – young people (digital natives) interacting with elderly - which has not previously been researched. Our initial results show that the benefits for the elderly include reduced isolation, more autonomy and independence, and better health.

    It has been argued that user participation is important when public authorities develop e-services. At the same time there is limited research on the usefulness of existing user participation approaches in public e-service development. In this paper we, therefore, analyze how the three user participation approaches participatory design, user-centered design, and user innovation - meet the strategic e-service goals of the EU and the US. In doing so, we identify three challenges that need to be considered when choosing among these approaches: 1) unclear user target segments can impede the fulfillment of usability and relevance goals, 2) the nature of participation can impede the fulfillment of democracy goals. and 3) lack of adequate skills can impede the fulfillment of efficiency goals.     Många utbildningsprogram inom högre utbildning har samma grundläggande kurser i utbildningen. Studenter tappar ofta studiemotivationen om grundläggande kurser ligger utanför programmets kärna och har svårt att se kunskapen kurserna ger i ett större perspektiv, trots att de är förkunskapskrav inför kommande fördjupningskurser.

    Vår studie har fokuserat på en sådan kurs i databassystem. Kursen läses av utbildningsprogram med inriktningar som webbprogrammering, systemvetenskap, datavetenskap och nätverk och systemadministration och har haft låg genomströmning av studenter under en femårsperiod.

    För att adressera problematiken har vi använt CDIO-modellen (Conceive, Design, Implement och Operate), som ursprungligen kommer från ingenjörsutbildningar. CDIO består av en mängd principer och metoder för att utveckla en utbildningsmiljö som främjar studentens lärande i en kurs. Vårt primära mål har varit att undersöka hur CDIO kan öka genomströmning i tekniktunga datavetenskapliga kurser.

    Statistik från kursutvärderingar, och samtal med studenter som valt att avbryta studierna visar på en gemensam nämnare: kursens material uppfattas som omfattande, komplext och teknikintensivt, vilket leder till att studenternas studiemotivation brister. Motivation kan definieras och diskuteras på olika sätt, och i denna artikel använder vi fem byggstenar i motivation: student, lärare, innehåll, metod/process och miljö.

    Startsituationen var följande: Kursen i databassystem består av fem omfattande grundområden som examineras av två moment, en salstentamen och en inlämningsuppgift. Av ca 150 registrerade studenter slutförde ca 45% kursen med minst godkänt betyg. Av de resterande har ca 40% betyg U, på samtliga examinationsmoment. Detta har pågått under en femårsperiod, trots att ändringar har utförts för att bemöta kursutvärderingar och befintlig problematik. En drastisk förändring var nödvändig och CDIO-modellen beslutade användas för detta ändamål.

    Resultat av att införa CDIO-modellen visar att efter två kursomgångar har genomströmningen ökat till ca 70 % och antal studenter med endast underkänt betyg har minskat till ca 10%. Kurens innehåll är oförändrat, dvs. inga områden har tagits bort eller minimerats. Även lärarresurser är oförändrade, varken mer eller mindre resurser har påverkat resultatet. Genom att införa CDIO i kursen har studenternas motivation ökat. Genom att justera de pedagogiska greppen har studenternas lärandeerfarenhet förbättrats och deras motivation ökat, vilket är i linje med tidigare forskning. Genom att studenterna uppmuntras i kontinuerligt lärande bidrar pedagogiken i CDIO till att ge studenterna djup kunskap. Genom att fokusera på samtliga fem byggstenar i motivation har genomströmningen och studenternas motivation ökat i kursen. Resultatet öppnar även upp för diskussion för hur CDIO kan användas för att öka genomströmning och studiemotivation i andra datavetenskapliga kurser.

    Under det tredje året på en kandidatutbildning gör studenterna det som ska vara ”kronan på verket” för deras utbildning – de skriver examensarbete. Lärare som involveras i examensarbetet, exempelvis handledare, examinator eller kursansvarig, har en stor och viktig uppgift i att hjälpa studenterna att göra den här kronan så bra och med så hög kvalitet som möjligt. Examensarbetet rymmer en unik möjlighet som sällan funnits i särskilt hög grad tidigare i utbildningen, att få träffa sin handledare. I mötet mellan handledare och student finns möjlighet till den goda diskussionen, det djupare samtalet där tankar kan utvecklas och där studenter kan få blomma ut i både kompetens och personlig utveckling. Allt detta anser vi vara en del av varje lärares individuella akademiska ledarskap. En del studenters examensarbeten går smidigt och relativt okomplicerat tillväga. Andra studenter fåren betydligt kurvigare väg med många farthinder att navigera kring. Dessa hinder handlar inte enbart om de rent ämnesmässiga, utan lika ofta om dåligt självförtroende hos studenten, eller om en brist på studiemotivation hos studenten. Det finns exempel på handledare, examinatorer och andra involverade som i detta läge tar händerna från studenten och tycker att problemet inte berör dem, att studenten får klara sig själv. Kanske vederbörande till och med suckar över lata eller svaga studenter. Vi tror dock att det är här, i de lite svårare situationerna som vi lärare måste plocka framdet goda akademiska ledarskapet och vår medmänsklighet och inte ge upp så lätt. Vår studie fokuserar på studentens upplevelse om vilka svårigheter som upplevs underexamensarbetet. Studien har pågått under 5 år (2011-2015). Statistik från kursutvärderingar och intervjuer med studenter identifierar följande problem under resan av examensarbetet:

    • Låg studiemotivation. Stort fokus med examensarbetet är att på egen hand driva en frågeställning som ska uppnå ett förväntat resultat. I många fall stämmer inte resan överens med förväntningarna, vilket lätt leder till att studentens motivation sänks.
    • Handledaren hjälper inte studenten att komma vidare. Examensarbetet är en mödosam process som ofta kräver en stöttande hand. Handledare bär en stor roll och ledarskap i att vägleda studenten. Tyvärr upplever många studenter att mötet med handledaren har motsatt effekt, att de ständigt påvisar problem som måste lösas. Tyvärr sätts lite fokus på vad som redan håller bra kvalité eller vad studenten gjort bra hittills.
    • Mötet med handledaren är inte ett bekvämt möte. Studenter jämför mötet med ”tandläkarskräck”. Istället för ett forum i syfte att driva studenten framåt samt främja eget initiativ och driv, upplevs mötet som ett forum i syfte att uppfylla handledarens krav. Detta upplevs som motsatt effekt i syftet att låta studentens kunskap blomma ut.

    Vår studie har bemött problematiken genom att införa pedagogiska tekniker i syfte att främja studentens lärprocess och lärarens ledarskap att motivera studenten. Istället för att ständigt diskutera problem läggs stor vikt på hur ledarskap kan öka studentens självförtroende att bli mer självgående. Kursutvärderingar och intervjuer med studenter från de senaste två åren visar att problematiken är bemött väl. Dessa erfarenheter vill vi gärna dela med oss av.

    In a traditional Business Intelligence (BI) system, power users serve less experienced casual users. Power users analyze and gather data requested by casual users, and produce the reports and visualizations that casual users base their decisions on. When data volumes and the usage frequency of a traditional BI system increase, power users have problems serving all the requests from casual users. The Self Service Business Intelligence (SSBI) approach can enable users to be more self-reliant and less dependent on power users. Although SSBI promises more benefits compared to a traditional BI system, many organizations fail to implement SSBI. The literature review presented in this paper discusses six SSBI challenges related to "Access and use of data" and four challenges related to "Self-reliant users". Awareness of these ten challenges can help practitioners avoid common pitfalls, when implementing SSBI, as well as guide SSBI researchers in focusing on their future research efforts.

    Self-service business intelligence (SSBI) enables all users, including those with limited technical skills, to perform business intelligence (BI) tasks without the support of BI experts. SSBI reduces pressure on BI experts, gives more freedom to self-reliant users and speeds up decision-making. Recent research has illustrated how organisations experience numerous challenges when trying to obtain SSBI benefits. The AQUIRE framework organises 37 identified SSBI challenges in five categories: Access and use of data, Data Quality, User Independence, creating Reports and Education. SSBI literature does poorly address how these challenges can be tackled. This research study aimed to identify strategies on how to manage those 37 SSBI challenges. The performed case study includes 24 semi-structured interviews with respondents from two organisations which have been heavily involved in SSBI implementation. The results reveal how nine identified SSBI success factors are related to the 37 AQUIRE challenges and how they can be addressed over time.

    Self-service Business Intelligence (SSBI) is an upcoming trend allowing non-technical casual users to use Business Intelligence (BI) in a self-reliant manner without the support of technical power users. Many organizations struggle to utilize the potential of SSBI and experience data-related and user-related SSBI implementations challenges. This study aimed at exploring user-related SSBI challenges by conducting and analyzing a total of 30 qualitative interviews with 5 BI consultants and 10 customer representatives involved in 2 SSBI implementation project teams. Analysis of the interviews revealed ten challenges related to “self-reliant users”, seven challenges related to “creating SSBI reports” and five challenges related to “SSBI education”, which differ considerably from SSBI challenges commonly discussed in literature. Awareness of these 22 challenges can help practitioners to avoid unnecessary obstacles when implementing and using SSBI, and guide SSBI researchers in simplifying the implementation process of SSBI.

The project was built on collaboration between three different universities, Halmstad, Örebro and Skövde and reports on how teachers, as well as the students collaborative learning experiences.

    The article establishes theory-based design principles for constructing tools and methods for developing innovative digital services. The research method is developed from process advice offered for this task, in the context of design science. We define the objectives for the design task (solution objectives), identify and justify suitable kernel theories (service design, open innovation, service-dominant logic), and derive the principle normative elements of the chosen theories. Convergences and contradictions in the normative elements are analysed in relation to the method design task, and the prescriptive elements are synthesised into six core design principles. Implications for both the method design task, and research and practice in general are drawn.

    E-government is not known for its progressive approach to the design of e-services. An action design research approach is taken for the development of a tool for helping e-service designers work in an innovative way. The theoretical grounding is in open service innovation, service-dominant logic and service design, and the research was conducted with the help of local government prac-titioners in Sweden. The resulting tool is an adaptation of the well-known business model canvas – the innovative digital service canvas. Other contributions include an approach to design science incorporating theory-based design principles, and the design principles themselves.

    The rapid pace of digitalisation provides many smarter and more efficient ways of interacting with the world, but may also lead to the exclusion of some groups. Senior citizens are one of these groups at risk. Taking the European Digital Competence Framework for Citizens as a starting point, we investigate digital survival skills for the elderly. Data was collected from digital education workshops for senior citizens organized jointly between Telia, Swedish municipalities, and the researchers. We use content analysis to understand seniors’ perceptions of which competences they need to survive in an increasingly digital environment and provide a version of the Competence Framework targeted at senior citizen inclusion. Lessons for inclusion initiatives are drawn from the results.

    With a global market and a distributed work environment, an organisation can today more freely choose which collaboration partners to hook up with. Making the collaboration a success depends to a great extent on the degree to which the organisations can interoperate. Using standards for enabling interoperability is a common approach to overcome the disperse and varying nature of, for example, applications. This paper elaborates on two facts influencing standards during their development and enhancement, focusing on both what to influence and how. Results show a variety of issues to clarify and take into consideration when determining in what way standards development should be influenced.

    Abstract [en]

    Interoperability between organisations involved in Business-to-Business (B2B) electronic commerce requires a common understanding and a common language. For this purpose, standards are required. B2B standards are in the thesis defined as guidelines for how communication and information sent between companies should be structured and managed.

    Three problem areas exist for B2B standards: the development of standards, the standards specifications, and standards implementation. The research and development focus regarding standards has so far been on either technological aspects or the development of standards and specifications. Less is known about the implementation process. This work addresses this lack of knowledge, and hence its aim is to explore the world of B2B standardisation in order to identify and describe issues and solutions concerning B2B standards implementation.

    The research aim was addressed by firstly dividing the aim into three objectives, which are to be regarded as actions to take to realise the aim. Both theoretical and empirical material has been gathered. Theoretical material refers to existing scientific publications, while the empirical part covers four stakeholder perspectives: standards users, developers, software organisations and researchers. The approach taken, which is reflected in the thesis objectives and structure, is top-down. This means a life cycle perspective is addressed before the implementation process as such is considered.

    The result of the research is a series of contributions, stemming from all parts of the thesis. The contributions have been used to create a list of guidelines for B2B standards implementation. The 45 guidelines are separated into five sections: concepts review, standards selection and comparison, life cycle influence, stakeholder identification, and implementation process. The guidelines can be used in the planning and preparing for implementation projects, as well as for increasing the level of knowledge about standards and the implementation thereof.

    Abstract [en]

    This thesis proposal starts by providing a short introduction to the research area, which is standardisation of inter-organisational business processes. Three main problem areas are introduced, of which one is selected for further research. The research problem is defined as how an organisation can certify that it has correctly implemented a B2B standard. The underlying assumption is that it is possible for organisations to make mistakes, such as misinterpret standards specifications, while implementing a standard. In order to investigate and attempt to bring clarity to this problem, five research questions are formulated and motivated. The research as a whole is also motivated, from both a theoretical, or academic viewpoint, and from a practical viewpoint. A tentative research approach is outlined, and guidelines for future actions are provided, along with a preliminary timeplan. Attached in an appendix is a tentative thesis outline, in which headings are provided and complemented with meta-text regarding the contents of each chapter.

    Business-to-Business (B2B) is one of the areas getting more and more attention in terms of inter-organisational co-operation. In B2B, numerous transactions and communication flows take place between organisations and disparate systems. A standards-based approach is common in this respect. A B2B standard is defined as guidelines for how communication and information sent between organisations should be structured and managed (Söderström, 2004). Such standards are implemented between several partners as a means to achieve a common language, increased integration between systems, and increased automation. The standards undergo a number of activities and phases during their existence, much like “regular” IT and information systems. The series of activities and phase are often referred to as a life cycle.

    Standards-related literature within business-to-business (B2B) covers many separate areas. Examples are enabling technology, development processes for standards in formal, semi-formal and informal fora, base standards (XML and EDI) extensions and evolvement, intellectual property rights, etc, etc. In computer science literature, the term life cycle is usually used to denote the previously mentioned phases for a product or process, from rdquobirth to deathrdquo. They are useful for understanding various phenomena and how these relate to their respective environments such as to stakeholders. However, the standards life cycles is only rarely discussed in literature. This paper examines seven existing life cycle models for standards and standardisation, and shows where extensions to the current approaches are needed. The result is a general standards life cycle model, which may serve as the basis for discussion and to identify perspectives for both standards research and standards practice to consider.

    Flows of information, services and goods are not confined to an organisation’s internal structure, but today face a more distributed environment both in terms of time and space. Mergers and acquisitions imply that one and the same organisation no longer resides in one geographical location, and neither does it have a uniform IS/IT architecture. Web Services are one rather recent approach to obtaining increased interoperability between existing systems. This paper is focused on what business values organizations can achieve using Web Services, Results show ten such values, but also points to challenges that need to be addressed.

    Abstract [en]

    In the area of standardisation for inter-organisational business processes, terminology confusion is slowly emerging. The meaning of the concept "standard" is not as clear as many people and organisations seem to assume. This paper looks into the various definitions of a standard and four similarly used concepts: specific, recommendation, framework and pattern. When examining the various definitions, four different definitions types were identified: the item itself; the process of creating the item; the document describing how to create the item; and the process of creating this particular document. Furthermore, the standardisation efforts described in this paper for the most cases do not define their business vocabulary, meaning that there is some risk for terminology confusion. The conclusion is that there is a need to perform thorough concepts definitions and conceptual modelling in this area.

    Abstract [en]

    In business co-operation of today, standards are often used to facilitate interactions between companies. In this paper, we discuss and compare seven suggested standardisation efforts in order to answer the question of what role standardisation will play in such co-operations. The comparison shows that standardisation indeed is becoming an important part of business processes, particularly in those that flow across organisational boundaries. Commercial as well as non-profit organisations are furthermore joining hands in developing standardisation efforts to smoothen, speed up and automate the way in which business is done in various trading communities.
