    Abstract [en]

Assessing pain in children is one of nurses’ most difficult tasks and provides the foundation for efficient pain management. Young children lack the verbal skills to describe their experience of pain and they also have problems in differentiating pain from other unpleasant experiences. The aim of this study was to review current research regarding pain assessment in children. A literature search was carried out in the CINAHL and Medline databases, using the search words «pain assessment», «pain measurement», «pain rating scales», «children» and «nursing» and was limited to the years 1997–2002. Twelve articles satisfied the inclusion criteria and were analysed. The results are highlighted in five areas: Assessment of pain in children; Assessment of pain in infants; Tools and scales for assessing pain; Factors influencing the nurse’s assessment of pain; pain assessment as a basis of efficient pain therapy. The results of the study point to problems in pain assessment and the importance of children’s pain being adequately assessed. Accordingly, it is of utmost importance when possible to be able to take into account the individual child’s experience of pain.

    Abstract [en]

Previous research found that spirituality seems difficult to give meaning and to work with in caring. The aim of this interview study was to explore how the nursing staff experienced the spiritual dimension within caring. Data was obtained from ten nursing staff at a Swedish infection department and analyzed with content analyze. The result shows that conditions to discover and to meet spirituality depend on the staff’s ripeness, that self-knowledge affect consciousness about spirituality and in the relationship of care spirituality is visible. The meaning of spirituality is to relate to God and other people, seeking the meaning of life and attitude at fateful occasions. This study shows there is a lot of knowledge released about patients’ spiritual needs only by asking: what do you believe in? The knowledge from this study is usable booth in nursing and in educational settings.

Undocumented refugee children in Swedish healthcare: Nurses' knowledge concerning regulations and their attitudes about the care2012Inngår i: Vård i Norden, ISSN 0107-4083, E-ISSN 1890-4238, Vol. 32, nr 1, s. 75-78Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to investigate nurses’ attitudes about care for undocumented refugee children and also to investigate the knowledge among nurses concerning the regulations for this care. The study is quantitative and based on a questionnaire sent to all nurses working in pediatric healthcare and medical care in a medium-sized county in Sweden. The overall response was 91 questionnaires (55.9%). Most of the respondents felt insecure or lacked knowledge of what regulations are valid when undocumented refugee children seek medical care or healthcare. Almost all nurses had a positive attitude toward caring for these children, but they feel they lack knowledge about the regulations regarding their care. To optimize the care situation for these children the regulations should be reviewed and altered to allow the nurse, legally and securely, to care for them.

    Abstract [en]

Recommendations from national Finnish projects indicate the need for reorganization of future healthcare, raising the question of an advanced role for nurses. The first Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) course in Finland started in January 2005, at the University of Applied Sciences in Vaasa. The course concentrated on two main areas, assessment of acute care needs and care of patients with chronic diseases. Seventeen students completed their education in December 2006. The purpose of this study was to describe the consequences of the APN role from a personal and an organizational perspective. All 17 APNs who completed their education where interviewed. The interviews focused on the role of the APN, possible changes in working patterns, and attitudes towards the role. The interviews were analysed using qualitative content analysis. Results shows a great need for APNs in the clinics, however there are still much role confusion and attitudes are still pending. Some indicate that the content of their work has not changed at all. Others describe both increased responsibility and autonomy. However, everyone described that the education program had influenced them in their work: they describe an increased competence and capability; and altered notions of security and work satisfaction.

    Abstract [en]

The role of the Nurse Practitioner has successfully been developed internationally within different areas of health care. To satisfy the needs of health care of the population in Sweden, an optimal utilization of the available resources is demanded and treatment of health care problems at an appropriate level of care is required to be able to give health care with good availability, high quality and safety. A collaboration started between the Primary Health Care in the county of Skaraborg and the University of Skövde to develop the role of the district nurses in primary health care toward a more specialized function with the competence to independently make decisions and solve health care problems. The plans of this new role in the health care system gained approval at the National Board of Health and Welfare and other public authorities. St Martin´s College, Great Britain and University of Rhode Island, USA have also been partners of collaboration. The result of the work became a curriculum of a new education in Sweden – Advanced Nursing Practice in Primary Health Care.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to elucidate the meaning and dimensions of the concepts uncertain, control, secure and risk. The results from the concept determination were discussed in relation to the phenomenon of women’s health and illness experiences following a myocardial infarction (MI). A method of concept determination was used. The findings disclose the complexity of the women’s existential uncertainty that was experienced by women following an MI. This uncertainty is an important matter in relation to the women’s health processes and to their well-being. In these processes the concepts control, secure and risk play a central role. Western culture of today seems to be characterized by a search for greater safety. Lifestyle disorders, such as an MI, seems to make people more aware of specific risk factors that may be avoided. Women who have suffered an MI want to be as safe as possible in order to not fall ill again, but live well. The women’s ambition to achieve greater safety may lead them to feel even greater uncertainty. It is a challenging act for healthcare professionals to balance their support, to give information and to care for patients with acute coronary syndromes.

Kvinnors upplevelser av tidig graviditet, efter att ha upplevt ett eller flera missfall tidigare i livet2012Inngår i: Vård i Norden, ISSN 0107-4083, E-ISSN 1890-4238, Vol. 32, nr 1, s. 4-8Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose: To describe women’s experiences of early pregnancy after their experience of earlier miscarriage(s).

Method: This study used a qualitative method with a phenomenological perspective. Midwives working in Maternity Healthcare Center were intermediaries in the data collection. The analysis material consisted of six open interviews with women in early stages of pregnancy that have experienced miscarriage in the past. The data analysis created an essence of the women´s experiences.

Results: All of the interviewees are happy to be pregnant. For some of the women the happiness is mixed with worry about experiencing another miscarriage. They are reluctant to experience the grief and loss that had accompanied their previous miscarriages. Those women are able to explain their misgivings to friends and family experience less worry and reluctance. A positive outlook for their pregnancy and to see miscarriage as something natural makes it easier to live with the outcomes.

Conclusion: Women who have had a previous experience of miscarriage have mixed feelings of happiness and worry in early stages of pregnancy. Those women that choose to think positively accept miscarriage as part of nature’s way and feel an inner peace. All of the women realize the importance of finding peace in their pregnancy.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of the study was to describe student’s accounts of school nursing and nursing activities. A purposive sample of nine informants was used, spanning students from two different schools aged between 17 and 19 years. Four  categories with sub categories emerged. (i) The students express emotions of being fond of the school nurse, but expect more caring attitudes from her (ii) The school nurse is seen as a good resource; however, the students’ confidence is partial. (iii) Reasons for consulting are mostly physical problems, despite psychological caring needs and (iv) SNHC activities are seen as useful, although too basic. These data expose a caring dilemma between the student’s needs and the professional/institutional achievements.
