Preventing fatal effects of overworking: Product design solution2018Independent thesis Basic level (university diploma), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

“Overworking to death” is a phenomenon that has been noticeable in developing countries. The cause of death is mainly through ischemic strokes. While the victims’ occupations differed, they all shared a common characteristic, being positioned in a sedentary work, ranging from IT workers to doctors. This project’s aim was to develop a product that prevented or decreased the strokes that derived from sedentary overwork. This was mainly tackled by preventing one of the three causes of developing blood props, slowed blood flow. In order to gather rich data of the phenomenon, a qualitative study was conducted in China, during two months. By doing an extensive structured sampling, information rich data could be gathered during a short period of time. Data were derived from observations, questionnaires and an interview, which then was interpreted to customer needs and the final product specification. The final product became a trouser with an in built dynamic compression mechanic, that can compress the veins mostly during sitting activities, in order to prevent blood stasis. The compression mechanic works like the Chinese finger trap; compressing the calves while sitting and stretching the legs forward. It is made only out of polysaccharides fibres; cotton and corn.

3D karaktärsmodell i SteampunkGenren2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Ponies i Westport: En analys av narrativa aspekter i estetiska moddar2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Scenes from a Marriage (1973) marked a breakthrough for Ingmar Bergman (1918-2007), reaching awide audience both nationally and internationally. Scenes from a Marriage is also Bergman's first television series and today his most performed play in theatre around the world. Productions of Scenes from a Marriage in different media, such as television series, feature films, a book and in the theatre, has made it Bergman's most widespread work. Scenes from a Marriage was also of great importance to many individuals, influencing them to make crucial changes in their lives and relationships. Bergman's story of the marriage of two people, a marriage in crisis, divorce and reconciliation has obviously something to say to many of us who have watched, listened to, or read the story. What then does it tell us, and in what way is the story told? This question is addressed in an analysis of the work's composition, with particular emphasis on narrative techniques, motifs and the underlying theme, based on the Swedish book version. The six scenes in the book all take a dramatic form and present the same basic literary motif in different ways: a relationship based on love between two people in a very difficult situation. This motif, in turn, unfolds within the overall theme of the work: the human search for truth. This transforms the scenes into something more than just a story about a marriage crisis, becoming a story about two people's search for meaning in life. This aspect of the story is perhaps the main reason why Bergman's Scenes from a Marriage has reached out and touched so many people and still does. There is also a critical dimension to the search for truth, questioning the conventions and traditions of marriage and society. This analysis is the first in a series of analyses of Ingmar Bergman's written works.

    Abstract [en]

To knock Death out of the Game. An analysis of Tomas Tranströmer’s poem “Medieval motif ”

The Swedish poet Tomas Tranströmer’s (1931–2015) poem “Medieval Motif ”, from For Living and Dead (1989), takes its visual point of departure in the motif “Man who plays chess with Death about his life”. A motif also found in medieval visual arts (Albertus Pictor, 1440–1509) and in modern film art (Ingmar Bergman, 1918–2007). In both Pictors painting, ”The Game of Chess with Death” (around 1480), and Bergman’s film The Seventh Seal (1957), Death knocks man out of the game by checkmate. In Tranströmer’s poem, however, things turn out somewhat differently. In “Medieval Motif ” there is unique word in Swedish poetry, “frisörsaxklippande” (“barber-scissor-like clipping”), as a determination for a sound. The analysis of the poem tries to answer a number of questions: What is this sound exactly? Why does the sound occur in a poem about a motif from the Middle Ages? What function does the sound have for the poem as an artistic whole? The “Medieval motif ”, which besides the title consists of two Sapphic stanzas, is the subject of an in-depth motif analysis and of a composition analysis. In summary, the analysis shows that the “Medieval motif ” forms an epiphany where the motif of Vanitas contributes to the understanding of the moment of togetherness as time and space cease to exist, and a previously hidden truth is revealed. As a part of that truth, Death is knocked out of the game.

The Magic Lantern of Memories: On Ingmar Bergman’s Story Laterna Magica

Abstract: Laterna magica (1987) is the first book Ingmar Bergman (1918–2007) published whose content was not intended to be developed into film or theater. This autobiographical book has often been used in research as a reference in various contexts concerning Bergman’s life and art. From a research point of view, however, it is difficult to use the memory book as evidence for facts or truths, as there are many examples of it simply being fiction. It is therefore interesting today to read Laterna magica as a work of art in its own right and thus perhaps find a different “truth” than the one about Ingmar Bergman’s life. For his story of himself, Bergman has very consciously chosen a literary form that structures personal memories interspersed with more contemporary events. What memories then does his literary laterna magica show and what do they mean? Why are memories and events structured in a certain way? Is there any unity in the total of more than a hundred memory images in various forms that the book consists of? My reading of Laterna magica takes a point of departure in Adriana Cavarero’s (2000) theory of the “narrative self.” In Laterna magica the narrative self creates an identity through the story that consists of the merged memory images. It then becomes a story where Bergman’s narrative self is looking for answers to the question “who am I?” The reading of the “autobiography”also assumes that it is a literary work. Thus, the story of the magical lantern of memories can be analyzed as a literary composition where staging and truth-seeking are two important concepts.

Experiencing Play with Digital Heritage through Mobile AR Technology2016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The present work is based on the research and design of a mobile AR experiment performed in the context of the emerging interdisciplinary fields of digital heritage and experience design. In an attempt to find a method to support the justification and discovery of elements that can influence the user towards the fulfilment of an objective in a heritage experience, my experimental research reveals that a combination of play moments including elements of embodiment and sensuousness in mobile AR are most suitable to convey a story. Determining suitable gameplay and game mechanics requires an appropriate setting and context for a user’s encounter with digital heritage. My research outlines a design methodology to reveal how the aesthetics of mobile AR technology can be designed to support critical user experiences through play and discovery.

Musik i rollspel: Till vilken grad påverkar musik spelinlevelsen i ett pen and paper RPG?2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Skövde: Högskolan i Skövde. [Handledare: David Mighetto, Docent, fil. dr]

    1.   Introducción

Drama groups: Stigma challenging and well-being of individuals living with HIV/AIDS in Uganda2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 15 credits / 22,5 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this narrative study was to describe the role and potentials of drama groups for enhancing and maintaining well-being for female drama group members living with HIV in Uganda. Six semi-structured interviews were carried out and analyzed through a thematic analysis. The analysis was made within a theoretical framework based upon Sen's notion of the capability approach and social psychological theories of the self. The results showed that the activities carried out by the drama group empowered the women through increasing their access to important capabilities such as inclusion and self-respect. It further indicated that the women needed other forms of support before being able to benefit from these activities. However, some capabilities were still inaccessible to the women due to obstacles as poverty and harmful gender norms.

KARAKTÄRSDESIGN MED SUBTILARE FORMELEMENT: Design av goda och onda manliga och kvinnliga karaktärer2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Force-dynamics in the history of Swedish modals2009In: Studies in Language and Cognition / [ed] Jordan Zlatev, Mats Andrén, Marlene Johansson Falck & Carita Lundmark, Cambridge Scholars Publishing, 2009, p. 487-503Chapter in book (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The development of modal meanings has been an important topic in the literature on semantic change and evidence exists for a diachronic relation between root and non-root (epistemic) meanings. However, there is less certainty regarding the details and potential causes of this development. This chapter contributes to this discussion by considering the development of the Swedish modal 'may', arguing that the concept of force-dynamics can explain the relations among different modal meanings. The assumption is that a general image-schema in terms of forces and barriers underlies and motivates the root as well as the non-root meanings. Morever, I show how the schema may be transferred to and used in different kinds of semantic/conceptual domains.

    Abstract [en]

This thesis investigates the development of root and non-root meanings of modal verbs through an empirical study of the verbs and kunna in Old Swedish. Modality is taken to refer domains in which possibility contrasts with necessity. In Old Swedish, (magha) and kunna 'may' and kunna 'can' have the potential to express most of the meanings relating to possibility and necessity, as well as lexical meanings.

The two verbs are investigated in an Old Swedish corpus consisting of legal and religious texts. Certain default correlations between type of modal and semantic and syntatic enviroments, which have been proposed in the litterature, are investigated.

The result shows that frequently expresses participant-internal possibility, 'ability' and deonic possibility, 'permission', whereas kunna is mainly associated with participant-internal and general external possibility. Of particular interest is the use of in conditions, which provides evidence that this construction type may have played a bridging role in the development on non-root modality.

Using the framework of force dynamics, the development of modal meaning is analysed as a metamorphical transfer of one consistent image-schema between different conceptual domains. the schematic components are described in terms of forces and barriers. The proposed transfer from a physical to a social domain and further on to a mental and a conversional domain provides a good account of the diachronic development.

Anglicismos del ámbito de la informática y de Internet en prensa española entre 1990-20042008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [es]

Kroppsbyggnad och kroppsproportioner i actionspel: och dess påverkan på spelaren2010Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Ökat Välbefinnande med Känslomässig Förutsägelse2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Music and Emotion: The Neural Correlates of Music-Induced Positive Affect2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Listening to music is rated as one of the most pleasurable activities in human life and,in fact, listeners report the emotional impact of music to be one of the main motivatorsas to why they listen to music. This thesis focuses on the positive affective statesexperienced when listening to music and their underlying neural substrates. Despite thefact that research on the neural correlates of music-induced positive affect is arelatively recent undertaking our understanding has significantly improved during thelast decades. The aim of the current thesis is to give an overview of the neuralcorrelates of music-induced positive affect in healthy individuals. As such, psychophysiological, neuroimaging and electrophysiological studies are reviewed.Across studies the consistent involvement of brain regions, such as the orbitofrontalcortex, the striatum and the amygdala and left hemisphere frontal regions in response tomusic-induced positive affect has been found. These structures constitute an importantpart of the mesolimbocortical reward circuitry found to be involved in the processing ofa wide range of pleasures. The thesis also discusses conceptual and methodologicallimitations inherent in the studies reviewed. Understanding the nature and underlyingneural basis of music-induced positive affect is important because of the implications itmay have for psychological and physical wellbeing.

Modulära metoder för spelgrafik i Bloodline Champions2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Musikens melodiska dissonanser i dator- och TV-spel: Hur dissonanser i melodin påverkar spelarens uppfattning av spelet2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    A cross-linguistic study of grammatically-dependent question tags Data and theoretical implications2011In: Studies in Language, ISSN 0378-4177, E-ISSN 1569-9978, Vol. 35, no 4, p. 793-851Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article proposes a new categorization of confirmation-seeking question tags, based on how the use of such tags is restricted in relation to the preceding clause, the anchor. The focus is on a category labelled grammatically-dependent question tags (GDQTs). Earlier research has claimed that almost only English has such question tags, but this article presents and compares data on GDQTs from more than ten languages, and suggests a hierarchy for features of grammatical dependence in question tags: polarity < tense < number/person < (semantic) gender (possibly also < verb substitution). The GDQT structures vary in different ways: all GDQT languages have negative GDQTs, but not all have positive GDQTs; verb substitution is not always applied and constant polarity instead of reversed polarity is also found.

Confirmation-demanding tag questions in fiction dialogue2014In: Subjectivity and epistemicity: Corpus, discourse, and literary approaches to stance / [ed] Dylan Glynn & Mette Sjölin, Lund: Lund University , 2014, p. 165-185Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper deals with tag questions to which an answer is demanded by a speaker who is certain about the truth of the proposition but who wants to hear the answer uttered by the addressee. Similar tag questions have previously been described based on data from courtrooms (e.g. Biscetti 2006), where tag questions are typically used by powerful speakers. However, data from the British National Corpus shows that confirmation-demanding tag questions may also be used outside institutional settings and in situations with various power relationships. Most of these examples are from fiction dialogue, where conflicts and confrontations are often depicted. In courtrooms, there is always an audience; however, in fiction dialogue, most confirmation-demanding questions in the data are found in private conversations. Confirmation-demanding tag questions seldom seem to be captured in conversational data, apart from in cases where the speaker wants the answer to be heard by a third party; it is therefore suggested that private confrontations might be underrepresented in conversational data. This paper also discusses functional categorizations of tag questions in general and argues that the unit of analysis should be the whole tag question, i.e. the anchor and the tag taken together, and not just the tag.

Questions in English and Swedish fiction texts: A study based on parallel and comparable corpus data2020In: Languages in Contrast: International Journal for Contrastive Linguistics, ISSN 1387-6759, E-ISSN 1569-9897, Vol. 20, no 2, p. 235-262Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this article is to shed new light on the use and translation of English and Swedish questions in fiction by using a combination of parallel and comparable corpus data extracted from the bidirectional English-Swedish Parallel Corpus. In particular, the study examines questions containing a question mark (QMquestions) categorised into wh-interrogatives, polar interrogatives, alternative questions, tag questions (including those with invariant tags), declarative questions, wh-fragments and non-wh-fragments. The parallel analysis shows that most QMquestion types are more often translated congruently into English than into Swedish. The focus is on types with low mutual correspondence scores: fragments, tag questions and declarative questions. The comparable analyses concern both bilingual contrasts between the original texts and monolingual contrasts between the translation and original subcorpora in both languages. The bilingual analysis aligns with several preliminary findings in the parallel analysis, e.g. the favouring of tag questions and some types of wh-fragments in English. The monolingual analysis reveals both over- and underuse in translations and points to a strong effect of source-language influence.

    Abstract [en]

This chapter gives a brief introduction to what artificial intelligence is. We begin discussing some of the alternative definitions for artificial intelligence and introduce the four major areas of the field. Then, in subsequent sections we present these areas. They are problem solving and search, knowledge representation and knowledge-based systems, machine learning, and distributed artificial intelligence. The chapter follows with a discussion on some ethical dilemma we find in relation to artificial intelligence. A summary closes this chapter.

Att uttrycka karaktär med rörelsekaraktäristika: En studie i att förenkla variation i karaktärsanimering med hjälp av Rudolf Laban2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Videogames have a long, and complex, relationship with “non-Western” countries. Game narratives and ludic symbols are fraught with implicit, or explicit, imperialist history and ideologies. In some games, such as Sid Meier’s Colonization, the connection is fairly obvious. But a game doesn’t have to be about colonization to present a colonialist narrative. Souvik Mukherjee is a game researcher at the front of a growing discussion on this topic. In his work, he analyses games from different perspective (media analysis, philosophy, and sociology) to present a holistic understanding of the way games represent, and constructs, different cultures, people, political systems, ethics, and societal issues. This chapter is an edited transcript of an interview with Souvik, where we talked about everything from his academic work, to how he modded Age of Empires in his childhood.

Contextualizing Game Literacy: A transhistorical approach to understanding Game-Based Learning environments2020In: Proceedings of the 15th International Conference on the Foundations of Digital Games: FDG 2020 / [ed] Georgios N. Yannakakis, Antonios Liapis, Penny Kyburz, Vanessa Volz, Foaad Khosmood, Phil Lopes, New York: Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), 2020, article id 108Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The nature of ‘reading’ different types of texts, across all media, is fundamentally beholden to the concept of ‘literacy’. The concept of literacy is well established in media studies – from books, to film, and visual, performing and interactive arts – and as such it has a wide range of applicability. All forms of media constitute a semiotic milieu in which signifiers and codes mean different things depending on the form’s unique language and the contexts and manner in which individual participants, or “readers”, approach them. In the field of digital games research, literacy is commonly defined as a narrower concept that refers to the ability to identify affordances and interact with game components with a high degree of confidence. This focus on capability is understandable to a degree: the unique aspect of games as a medium is often considered to specifically be its interactability, and thus being able to interact becomes synonymous with being ‘game literate’. In this paper, however, we will both describe how literacy in games would benefit from a more nuanced, transhistorical view of interactability, as well as provide examples from many kinds of media beyond games to demonstrate that interaction literacy is neither novel nor unique to the medium of games. Understanding this rich history would provide a broader foundation of referential literature for game scholars to use when discussing the concept of game literacy and the interactability of media in general.

    Abstract [sv]

Un estudio sobre anglicismos en prensa española2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [es]

Dominans och undergivenhet hos spelkaraktärer: Faktorer som påverkar uppfattningen av dominans kontra undergivenhet hos animerade spelkaraktärer2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]
