    Abstract [en]

    Electric cars have appeared as an alternative to the big pollution caused by internal combustion engine cars. However, electric cars as the Renault Fluence Z.E. are not very sold in the market because of their small range of autonomy. To make this car an attractive option, it is necessary to add a range extender that extends its autonomy. This range extender is based in the addition of a small internal combustion engine to be attached only when the electric autonomy cannot fulfill the trip. A range extender is chosen by means of a comparison between different electric engines sold in the market. By means of a classification tree, the different places of the car where to mount it are compared and the most appropriate is chosen. By using Solidworks, a structure to support the engine and attach it to the car is designed. The result is a Range Extender device to mount in the hitch hook of the Renault Fluence Z.E. that provides an autonomy of around 665 km. This supposes a good solution for the owner of the Renault Fluence Z.E. who needs to cover trips of more than 180 km, the electric autonomy of this car.

    Abstract [en]

    Pollution levels in urban areas continue to rise, with transportation being the number one cause. As cities ban fossil fuel cars access to the city center, this project looks at the delivery of packgaes from internet purchases. A three-wheeled, human-powered and electrically assisted vehicle is designed. This vehicle is dsigned to work together with last-mile logistics. A scientific design process was carried out to define the stakeholders, competition and requirements of the project, among others.The results yielded a semi-finished vehicle, comprising of the frame, general design, FEA analysis, delivery system and an optimization process for the frame. Future work includes economical or social study, design of the brakes and gear system or a design of the frame-cabin connection.

    Abstract [en]

    The employment of the finite element (FE) method in conceptual and detail design of a secondary deck platform for trailer bodies is presented. The main objective of the project is to design a versatile, light and cheap secondary deck. To assist the designer with sufficient means for the concept generation and evaluation process, the FE method is used in order to gain fair structural analysis data. Assistance from the computer software stimulates creativity, reduces the time required in the design process, and eventually increases probability to gain customer satisfaction. This approach is precise enough for comparison purposes at this stage of the design process. The structural data gained is compared mainly with weight and access criteria.

    Abstract [en]

    This study had the purpose to further the use of industrial lasers in the manufacturing of hairpin electric motors by optimizing the process of contacting the hairpins. A problem with laser beam welding of copper is the porosity created in the process which can lead to increased resistance of the welded region along with degraded mechanical properties. By experiment this study aimed to find the optimal parameters to reduce the porosity while maintaining all other requirements for the weld. The track of achieving a satisfactory simulation was done to minimize the need of physical experiments which can be argued as a sustainable development aspect. A set of parameters was found that achieved a low volume of pores, a sufficient weld depth and a desirable bead geometry. Some pores still remained, mostly at the endpoint of the laser path which could be caused by the laser shut-off leading to a keyhole collapse enclosing some pores in that region. The simulation showed promising results in welding depth and melt region. Further work on ramping the laser power at the endpoint could be beneficial for eliminating the remaining porosity as well as refining the simulation in terms of porosity.

    Many high-level technical products are associated with changing requirements, drastic design changes, lack of design information, and uncertainties in input variables which makes their design process iterative and simulation-driven. Regression models have been proven to be useful tools during design, altering the resource-intensive finite element simulation models. However, building regression models from computer-aided design (CAD) parameters is associated with challenges such as dealing with too many parameters and their low or coupled impact on studied outputs which ultimately requires a large training dataset. As a solution, extraction of hidden features from CAD is presented on the application of volume simulation of curtain airbags concerning geometric changes in design loops. After creating a prototype that covers all aspects of a real curtain airbag, its CAD parameters have been analyzed to find out the correlation between design parameters and volume as output. Next, using the design of the experiment latin hypercube sampling method, 100 design samples are generated and the corresponding volume for each design sample was assessed. It was shown that selected CAD parameters are not highly correlated with the volume which consequently lowers the accuracy of prediction models. Various geometric entities, such as the medial axis, are used to extract several hidden features (referred to as sleeping parameters). The correlation of the new features and their performance and precision through two regression analyses are studied. The result shows that choosing sleeping parameters as input reduces dimensionality and the need to use advanced regression algorithms, allowing designers to have more accurate predictions (in this case approximately 95%) with a reasonable number of samples. Furthermore, it was concluded that using sleeping parameters in regressionbased tools creates real-time prediction ability in the early development stage of the design process which could contribute to lower development lead time by eliminating design iterations.

    Abstract [en]

    Autonomous vehicles promise to revolutionize society and improve the daily life of many, making them a coveted aim for a vast research community. To enable complex reasoning in autonomous vehicles, researchers are exploring new methods beyond traditional engineering approaches, in particular the idea of drawing inspiration from the only existing being able to drive: the human. The mental processes behind the human ability to drive can inspire new approaches with the potential to bridge the gap between artificial drivers and human drivers. In this review, we categorize and evaluate existing work on autonomous driving influenced by cognitive science, neuroscience, and psychology. We propose a taxonomy of the various sources of inspiration and identify the potential advantages with respect to traditional approaches. Although these human-inspired methods have not yet reached widespread adoption, we believe they are critical to the future of fully autonomous vehicles.

    Abstract [en]

    The report is an overview article, as a result of our investigation at the field of laser welding applied to electromobility cells manufactured in an aluminium housing. This project was proposed by the University of Skövde in collaboration with ASSAR Centre. The key results presented are based on the study of the following parameters: laser type and power, shielding gases, welding modes, patterns and layout. The conclusions of the project define the final selection of each parameter in order to achieve minimum defects and optimal electrical performance by minimizing the contact resistance.

    Abstract [en]

    The influence of the temperature on the cohesive laws for an epoxy adhesive is studied in the glassy region, i.e. below the glass transition temperature. Cohesive laws are derived in both Mode I and Mode II under quasi-static loading conditions in the temperature range C. Three parameters of the cohesive laws are studied in detail: the elastic stiffness, the peak stress and the fracture energy. Methods for determining the elastic stiffness in Mode I and Mode II are derived and evaluated. Simplified bi-linear cohesive laws to be used at any temperature within the studied temperature range are derived for each loading mode. All parameters of the cohesive laws are measured experimentally using only two types of specimens. The adhesive has a nominal layer thickness of 0.3 mm and the crack tip opening displacement is measured over the adhesive thickness. The derived cohesive laws thus represent the entire adhesive layer as having the present layer thickness. It is shown that all parameters, except the Mode I fracture energy, decrease with an increasing temperature in both loading modes. The Mode I fracture energy is shown to be independent of the temperature within the evaluated temperature span. At C the Mode II fracture energy is decreased to about 2/3 of the fracture energy at C. The experimental results are verified by finite element analyses.

    A cohesive zone model is presented for analyzing the fatigue life of an adhesive joint in the range of 104–106 load cycles. The parameters of the model are derived from Mode I double cantilever beam experiments. Fatigue experiments with adhesively joined components from the automotive industry are performed, and the results from the experiments are compared to the results of simulations. The error in the predicted fatigue strength is of the same order as the statistical deviation of the fatigue experiments, indicating that the simulation method produces acceptable predictions of the fatigue strength for applications in e.g. early product development.
