The importance of organized activities during leisure time for high school students SOC, self-reported health and wellness (English)
Abstract [sv]
Abstract [en]
Background: Mental illness in children and adolescents has increased in recent decades. Research shows that high education, good social position, safe economy and good living habits increase the chance for good health. Leisure is also essential. SOC involves to see the whole human and focuses on the factors that promote health and ability to cope with illness.
Aim: The aim of the study was to find out if there´s a difference in SOC, and the perceived health and wellbeing, between high school students participating and not participating in organized leisure activities. The hypothesis was that participation in organized leisure activities strengthens SOC as well as perceived health and wellbeing.
Method: The study was conducted as a quantitative survey. The material was processed in SPSS.
Results: Previous participation in organized leisure activities during high school proved to strengthen the SOC, while current participation didn´t. Students who participated in organized leisure activities rated their health higher than those who didn´t participate. Participation in organized leisure activities didn´t have any effect on their perceived well-being.
Conclusion: It seems to be salutogenetic that school nurses motivate students to participate in organized leisure activities since participation proved to strengthen both SOC and perceived health.
