School nurses´ views of asking students about domestic violence. (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Through regular health consultations and health appointments the school nurse has a unique opportunity to meet all the students and then be able to ask whether they have been victims of domestic violence. To ask about domestic violence is a difficult question. The school nurse is a person who can make a big difference in student's life. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to illustrate the experiences of school nurses asking students about domestic violence. Method: Five interviews were conducted with school nurses practitioners in schools from pre-school to grade nine. Data was analysed using qualitative meaning analysis. Results: During the course of the assay five themes occur; To create a secure relationship, To be available for the student, A feeling of fear for the subject domestic violence, A feeling of loneliness at work, and To use the health consultations and The UNICEF CRC (Convention of the Rights of the Child) as tools. Conclusion: This study shows that school nurses find it difficult to talk to students about domestic violence. A health consultation creates relationships but does not create windows to talk about domestic violence. The availability of a drop-in school nurse's clinic is important. This result should be able to be used to develop health consultations and questionnaires so that the very own words of the students are used.
