Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: The school nurse has the opportunity to notice and address children that have been abused. Connecting with these children is a delicate task, good communication is vital in order to help the child to work through the suffering and find a meaning in the experience. A secure environment and a feeling of being safe are important in order to help a traumatized child. The school nurse has a unique possibility to make a significant difference to improve a traumatized child’s life. Aim: The aim of this study was to describe the school nurse experience in communicating with children that have experienced abuse. Method: Six interviews were conducted with school nurses working with children from preschool to 3rd year of high school. The data from these interviews were analyzed with an inductive content analysis. Result: From the analysis, four major categories were found; feeling secure in the work roll, handling difficulties during consultations and providing support during consultations. Conclusion: The study shows that all consultations with abused children are unique; it also shows how easy it is for the nurse to become emotional involved. The consultations should give the child the opportunity to be heard, inspire hope and to make the nurse available when the child needs to talk. The result of this study could be used in order to enhance the understanding of how the school nurses interact with abused children and how they can offer the children support. It could also be used as a foundation for further studies in how the nurse can perform consultations and how to improve interview methods.
