I takt med att samhället förändrats har även förutsättningarna för att klara av föräldraskapet förändrats. Idag förväntas föräldrar både arbeta samt på ett tryggt och säkert sätt ta hand om och uppfostra sina barn. När det gäller att ge stöd åt mammor och pappor i föräldraskapet under småbarnsåren spelar därför barnavårdscentrals (BVC) sjuksköterskan som central person en stor roll. Sjuksköterskan är ofta den som känner till familjen bäst, med dess brister och resurser.

Syftet med denna studie var att beskriva just BVC-sjuksköterskors uppfattningar av föräldrars behov av stöd. Studien utfördes med den fenomenografiska forskningsansatsen som metod och fyra BVC-sjuksköterskor intervjuades. Resultatet visade att det sjuksköterskorna uppfattar att alla föräldrar verkar ha gemensamt är ett behov av stöd genom bekräftelse. Föräldrarna har annars väldigt olika stödbehov relaterat till vad de har med sig i bakgrunden samt vilka egna resurser de har. BVC-sjuksköterskorna kan stärka föräldrarna genom att stötta och bekräfta att föräldrarna tänker och handlar rätt när det gäller barnet. En förälder som kommer stärkt ur ett samtal eller möte med BVC-sjuksköterskan har då genomgått en empowermentprocess.

As society has changed, the conditions of coping with parenting, also has changed. Today, parents are expected to work as well as in a safe and secure way care for and raise their children. When it comes to supporting mothers and fathers in their parenting, during early childhood years, the child health care with the child health nurse as a key person, plays a major role. The nurse is often the one who knows the family best, with its shortcomings and resources.

The aim of this studie was to describe especially child health nurses perceptions of parents´need of support. The study was carried out with the phenomenographic research approach as a method and four child health nurses were interviewed. The result showed that what nurses perceive all parents have in common is a need for support through confirmation. Otherwise parents have very different support needs, related to their background and their personal resources. The child health nurses can strenghten the parents by supporting and confirming that the parents are thinking and acting in the right way when it comes to the child. A parent who will emerge stronger from a conversation or meeting with the nurse, has gone through a process of empowerment.
