Bakgrund: Stroke är en av de vanligaste orsakerna till morbiditet och långvarig funktionsnedsättning hos äldre i Sverige. Stroke är en komplex sjukdom som medför neurologiska funktionshinder som kan påverka livet för de drabbade.

Syfte: Att belysa äldre patienters erfarenheter av livet efter att de drabbats av en stroke.

Metod: Studien är baserad på en integrerad sammanställning av kvalitativ forskning som innehåller en analys av 12 kvalitativa studier med hjälp av Fribergs femstegsmodell. Studierna söktes fram med hjälp av databaserna CINAHL och PubMed.

Resultat: Framställs i tre teman: En förändring i kropp och kognition, Från självständighet till beroende och anpassning till ett förändrat liv. Varje tema har två tillhörande subteman: Motoriska svårigheter, Kognitiva begränsningar, Känslan av en förlorad identitet och självbild, En komplex väg till acceptans, Övergång från sjukhus till hem och Praktiska utmaningar och upplevelser av rehabilitering.

Konklusion: Äldre patienter som överlever en stroke upplever livet efter som en utmaning. Den nya livssituationen kan innebära en omdefinition av identitet, sociala roller samt begränsningar av den fysiska funktionen.

Background: Stroke is one of the common causes of morbidity and long-term disability among older adults in Sweden. Stroke is a complex disease that leads to neurological impairments, which can significantly impact the lives of those affected.

Aim: To highlight the experience of older patients regarding life after suffering from a stroke.

Method: This study is based on an integrated compilation of qualitative research, analyzing 12 qualitative studies using Friberg’s five-step model. The studies were identified through searches in the CINAHL and PubMed databases.

Findings: The findings are presented in three themes: A change in Body and Cognition, From Independence to Dependence, and an adjustment to a changed life. Each theme includes two subthemes: Motor difficulties, Cognitive Limitations, The feeling of a lost identity and self-image, A complex path to acceptance, The transition from hospital to home, and Practical challenges and experiences of rehabilitation.

Conclusion: Elderly patients who have survived a stroke experience life after stroke as a challenge. The new life situation may require a redefinition of identity, social roles, and physical functions limitations.
