Factors that affect adolescents’ mental health : A literature review (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Introduction: Mental ill-health is a globally growing public health problem, around 25 percent of all adolescents’ living with mental ill-health. Mental ill-health in adolescents can have consequences later in life, for example unemployment, exclusion and continued mental illness. To promote mental health, determinants must be identified. The factors that affect adolescents’ mental health change over time, it is therefore important to follow up and analyze these factors. Aim: The aim of the study was to describe some of the factors that affect mental health of adolescents’, aged 13–18. Methods: A literature review was carried out, based on ten scientific articles, gathered from the databases PubMed and PsycINFO. The articles were analyzed using thematic analysis. Results: The analysis resulted in three themes: biological, psychological and social factors. Furthermore, eight sub-themes were generated: lifestyle habits; state of health; behavior; emotional states and personal characteristics; bullying; digital medias; society, and relationships. Conclusion: The study showed that the most frequently recurring factors in the articles were about relationships (social factor), followed by behavior (psychological factor). Through the study, it emerged that more research should be done on gender differences, as well as psychological factors linked to adolescents’ mental health.
