Who has the control? : Gender discrimination´s effect on individual sense of control within gender dominated work fields (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to examine workers' experience of gender discrimination from their employer within the female-dominated healthcare profession, and the male-dominated construction industry. Next, potential connections will be mapped between the perceived gender discrimination of the professional roles and work-related locus of control. In order to execute this study, a web survey was sent to people of relevance in the chosen occupational categories in Sweden. A total of 61 responded and the results show a statistically significant difference between healthcare and construction workers' perceived gender discrimination within the aspects of wage setting and power to influence their workplace. Additionally, significant relationships were found between the same aspects of perceived gender discrimination and locus of control. The conclusion of the study is that its findings indicate a pattern that can only be generalized for certain aspects of perceived gender discrimination and that more studies with a larger sample of participants should be conducted to map the phenomenon further.
