Influential factors on school absenteeism : a structured literature review (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Introduction: School absenteeism is a complex issue in society, as unequal conditions and opportunities for support can vary. Anxiety, somatic problems and neurodevelopmental disorders are among the most prominent factors in school absenteeism. Theory of change and Sense of Coherence were theoretical models used in this study. Aim: This study aims to compile knowledge about risk factors and preventive factors related to school absenteeism. The main target group were children of compulsory school age. Methods: A structured literature review design was utilised and 25 original scientific articles, published between 2019-2024, of mixed study design were included. The search terms school refusal, school absenteeism, school avoidance, factors, causes and reasons were used in the databases ERIC EBSCO, Scopus and Web of science. Scientific quality was assessed using checklists from CASP and STROBE. Systematic text condensation was used to analyse the data and resulted in three overarching themes: risk factors, preventive factors, and overrepresented groups. Results: Anxiety, somatic difficulties and autism were seen as the most prominent factors associated with school absenteeism. Students with internalised anxiety, somatic difficulties and with autism spectrum disorders were among the main risk groups for school absenteeism. School environment was a significant factor in students' ability to attend school, particularly related to bullying and sensitivity to impressions. Preventive factors which contributed to increased attendance were when students felt trust in their teachers and peers. Conclusion: Risk factors, preventive factors, and overrepresented groups within school absenteeism are important to identify for future efforts aimed at promoting attendance.
