How the Church of Sweden prioritizes its health-oriented work : A qualitative study (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Introduction: International and national organizations wish to incorporate civil society to aid in the work regarding health to a larger extent. The Church of Sweden with over five million members is considered the largest actor within Sweden's civil society that relates to health. There´s little research on the church's effect on Sweden's public health and there is a research gap regarding what guides health-oriented work in the Church of Sweden.

Purpose: The purpose was to explore the perceptions and experiences of priests and deacons working within the Church of Sweden regarding the health-oriented work within their parishes.

Method: Content analysis with a manifest dimension was utilized. Dataset material was transcripts from eight interviews with priests and deacons in parishes belonging to the Church of Sweden in the south and middle of Sweden.

Results: Six categories and 16 sub-categories were identified. Informants' experiences regarding identity, target groups, design, challenges and opportunities within the Church of Sweden with regard to the parish population's health was presented.

Conclusion: The Church of Sweden is a religious organization in a secularized society that faces challenges and opportunities regarding its health-oriented work. There was uncertainty regarding the organizations effect on health in society, however the informants still expresses a connection between activities and health.
