School nurses’ work against female genital mutilation : A qualitative survey (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Female genital mutilation is a serious threat to women's health, and today approximately 68,000 girls and women who have been subjected to this live in Sweden. An important part of the preventive work against female genital mutilation is education and making the problem visible. 13,000-23,000 girls in Sweden are at risk of being exposed to this act of violence, and the school nurse has an important role in identifying these girls and working against this practice.

Aim: To investigate school nurses' work against female genital mutilation.

Method: Qualitative questionnaire study with 39 received responses.

Findings: The study shows that the school nurses' preventive work consists of three categories that deal with knowledge, relationship-building and cooperation.

Conclusion: The degree of preventive work against female genital mutilation varies, ranging from nothing at all to attention being paid to the issue in health talks with students and custodians, lectures for educators and students and various types of collaboration. The knowledge level of the school nurses varies from no knowledge at all to having participated in several lectures, educational initiatives or sought information themselves. The preventive work can benefit from building good relationships with students and custodians, as well as having knowledge of female genital mutilation themselves.
