Abstract [sv]

Bakgrund: Att skada sig själv ger en kortsiktig lindring och kan vara ett sätt att kommunicera till omgivningen att individen inte mår bra. Självskadebeteende i barndomen ökar risken för missbruk, kriminalitet och suicid som vuxen. Skolsköterskan kan ha en viktig roll i att upptäcka självskadebeteende bland elever och vikten av ökad kunskap belyses.

Syfte: Syftet med studien var att belysa skolsköterskors erfarenheter av att möta elever med självskadebeteende.

Metod: En kvalitativ intervjustudie via e-post genomfördes med sju skolsköterskor. Datamaterialet analyserades utifrån kvalitativ innehållsanalys med induktivt förhållningssätt.

Resultat: Studien resulterade i tre kategorier som var: Att upptäcka självskadebeteende, Agerande vid självskadebeteende samt Kunskap och förebyggande arbete vid självskadebeteende.

Konklusion: Studien visade att hälsobesök och skolsköterskans tillgänglighet är av vikt för att upptäcka elever med självskadebeteende. Beroende på allvarlighetsgrad agerar skolsköterskorna olika vid upptäckt av självskadebeteende och samverkan med vårdnadshavare, externa vårdgivare, lärare och elevhälsoteamet belyses. Samband sågs mellan tidigare erfarenhet och upplevelse av kunskap om självskadebeteende. Svårigheter att arbeta hälsofrämjande med självskadebeteende beskrivs och förslag på förebyggande arbete ges.

Abstract [en]

Background: When one conducts self-injurious acts, it often generates short-term mitigation and can communicate to the surroundings that the individual is unwell. Self-injurious behaviour during childhood increases the risk of substance abuse, criminality, and suicidal ideation in adulthood. School nurses play a vital role in identifying signs of self-injury amongst pupils. A need for increased knowledge is reported.

Aim: The purpose was to illustrate the experiences of school nurses in meeting pupils with self-injurious behaviour.

Method: A qualitative interview study was conducted via e-mail communication with seven school nurses. The data was analysed through a qualitative content analysis with an inductive approach.

Findings: Three categories emerged from the results: Detection of, Action in case of, and Prevention of self-injury.

Conclusion: The study demonstrates that individual health visits and the availability of school nurses are of importance in detecting self-injury amongst youth. Contingent upon the level of urgency, the study highlights that school nurses act differently in the detection of self-harm and the collaboration with the pupil’s caregivers, external health care practitioners, teachers and student health team. Correlations have been found between previous practical experience and perceived knowledge of self-injury. Challenges in health promotion regarding self-injury are described, and alternatives of prevention are provided.
