How infertile men consider their psychological well-being has been changed by the diagnosis of infertility (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Introduction: The definition of the concept of infertility is based on the inability of a couple to achieve pregnancy after 12 months of unprotected regular intercourse. A couple's chance of pregnancy is determined by the fertility of both the man and woman. Suffering from involuntary childlessness can become a risk factor for mental illness, most studies show that people who cannot have children due to infertility in many cases experience anxiety and stress.

Purpose: Compile and thematize how infertile men believe that their mental well-being have changed because of the diagnosis.

Method: A structured literature study was conducted of scientific articles that were searched in the databases PubMed and Cinahl. The literature study includes a thematic analysis.

Results: Participants reported that healthcare professionals used colloquial language to be perceived as more humorous. The participants explained these reinforced feelings such as shame, stigma and guilt. An increased age in men affects the sperm count negatively via a slight negative correlation. Women and men perceived that fertility are women's health problems. The degree to which stress symptoms appear depends on the nature of the stress factor, the length of the stress period and individual coping strategies. Two main strategies that the study presents can be identified as problem-focused and emotion-focused coping

Conclusion: Infertility and the treatment forms of the diagnosis have a psychological impact on men. Empowerment and KASAM should be considered to a greater extent so men with infertility problems understand medical terms and manage situations at the individual's own pace.
