Frågeställningar:

- Vilka skillnader och likheter finns det i ledarskapsstilar hos rektorer respektive gymnasiechefer inom kommunal och fristående skola?

- Hur skiljer sig handlingsutrymmet för rektorer respektive gymnasiechefer mellan kommunal och fristående skola?

Syfte: Syftet med studien är att undersöka om det finns några likheter och skillnader i ledarstilar hos rektorer och gymnasiechefer inom kommunal och fristående skola i Skaraborgsregionen.

Teoretisk referensram: Denna forskningsrapport har utgått från olika teoretiska bidrag kring ledarskap. Demokratiskt ledarskap, Auktoritärt ledarskap, Låt-gå ledarskap och Situationsanpassat ledarskap. Forskningsrapporten har också utgått från teoretiska bidrag kring handlingsutrymme. Dessa begrepp har varit grunden i den teoretiska referensramen för studien. Begreppen är hämtade från tidigare relevant forskning och litteratur inom det valda ämnet.

Metod: En komparativ studie har genomförts där semistrukturerade intervjuer gjordes med sex respondenter, fyra rektorer och två gymnasiechefer inom en kommunal skola och en fristående skola.

Analys: Studiens analys utgår ifrån att redogöra och klargöra sambandet mellan empirin och det teoretiska bidraget. Analysdelen har bidragit till att redogöra för vilken ledarstil vardera respondent innehar samt vilka skillnader som utgör vilket handlingsutrymme respektive skola har.

Resultat: Resultatet indikerar att respondenterna har en demokratisk ledarstil och att ledarstilarna inte skiljer sig oavsett om de arbetar inom kommunal skola eller fristående skola. I situationer ändras respondenternas förhållningsätt, där vi kan se likheter kopplat till både låt-gå och auktoritär ledarstil, vilket författarna kopplar till det situationsanpassade ledarskapet.

Den kommunala gymnasiechefen har enligt studiens resultat ett lägre handlingsutrymme än den fristående skolans gymnasiechef. Detta på grund av politiska aspekter som påverkar dennes roll.

De kommunala rektorerna har ett mindre handlingsutrymme än den fristående skolans rektorer men utan att detta ger större påverkan på rektorerna. Detta eftersom att gymnasiecheferna för båda sektorerna ger stort ansvar till sina rektorer. De kommunala rektorerna påverkas också av att de arbetar inom en politisk organisation.

Research Questions: 

- What are the differences and similarities in leadership styles between principals and high school directors in public and independent schools? 

- How does the room of action differ for principals and high school directors between public and independent schools? 

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate if there are any similarities and differences in leadership styles among principals and high school directors in public and independent schools in the Skaraborg region. 

Theoretical Framework: This research report is based on various theoretical contributions on leadership. Democratic leadership, Authoritarian leadership, Laissez-faire leadership, and Situational leadership. The research report has also drawn from theoretical contributions on the room for action. These concepts have been the foundation of the theoretical framework for the study. The concepts are derived from previous relevant research and literature in the chosen subject. 

Method: A comparative study was conducted where semi-structured interviews were carried out with six respondents, four principals and two high school directors from a public school and an independent school. 

Analysis: The study's analysis aims to clarify the connection between the empirical data and the theoretical contribution. The analysis section has helped to explain the leadership style each respondent possesses and the differences in the scope of action for each school. 

Results: The results indicate that the respondents have a democratic leadership style and that the leadership styles do not differ regardless of whether they work in public or independent schools. In certain situations, the respondents' approaches change, showing similarities related to both laissez-faire and authoritarian leadership styles, which we link to situational leadership. According to the study's results, the public high school director has a room for action than the independent school’s high school director. This is due to political aspects affecting their role. Public school principals have a smaller scope of action compared to independent school principals, but this does not significantly impact the principals. This is because high school directors in both sectors delegate substantial responsibility to their principals. The public school principals are also affected by working within a political organization.
